Pink Floyd Albums Ranked From Worst to Best

They started as psychedelic experimenters and evolved into prog and art rock masters. They perfected the album-as-art-piece before in fighting drove them apart. Still they soldiered on without Roger Waters and continued to sell out massive stadiums around the globe. They are one of the biggest selling artists of all time, and simply monumental to this history and evolution of both rock and roll and the LP format.
Today, Jason, Kramzer, and Joe attempt to rank all 15 of the band's studio albums. No easy task, considering the many different eras of the band.

I kind of agree. It has a masterpiece in SOYCD, but the rest of the tracks are stock Floyd. "Wish You Were Here" is a nice ballad-y song but not much to it. Welcome to the Machine is a drone-based song with cool keys, but that's about it. Have A Cigar is funky, but it is a rip off of Time and not as good to me as Childhood's End. Very average album.

There is in fact a very obscure 16th Pink Floyd album. There is a version of the Zabriskie Point sound track album that only features the Pink Floyd tracks. It features a brilliant studio version of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' called 'Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up.'

It should also be stressed that despite being released nine months prior to The Dark Side of the Moon, it was actually written and recorded *after* about 80% of Dark Side...had been written...and even performed! They didn't get around to recording Dark Side...until June 1972, only a few weeks before Obscured By Clouds was released, but as for the writing, Obcured...is more like a follow-up than a predecessor. But with only half the ambition.

I know there’s not really much going on and it was kinda just them running out of ideas but I think that makes it funnier and more bizarre to me. I get why it’s so low on most lists (“Worst album I’ve ever heard” feels like a bit much though.) but it’s always so entertaining to me and I really could not tell you why, I just enjoy it. To be fair I count the live version as part of it and the live careful with that axe and Saucerful of secrets are two of my favorite of their songs ever. The Gilmour stuff is lower because I just don’t like their sound at that point, it’s not bad but it’s really not for me.

Joe got it right; Wish You Were Here is, indeed, their best album and one of the very few perfect albums in the history of recorded music. The theme, the sound, the compositions, the structure, the execution: FLAWLESS. It actually took me a while to warm up to The Dark Side Of The Moon. I first heard The Great Gig In The Sky on the radio and then purchased the record - and it disappointed me. I couldn't stand Money at all for one thing LOL But I have come around to it over the years and really like it now. WYWH, on the other hand, was pure love at first listen. What is truly amazing is that I turn fifty years old this year and I had NEVER heard any of the songs on either record prior to 2003 which is when I bought both of them...! The only two Floyd songs I knew up until then were Another Brick In The Wall and Learning To Fly because those tracks were played on music video channels when I was a teen in the 80s. Here in Finland they must not have played Pink Floyd much at all 🙃

Can never get behind this. I don't like all of Roger Water's politics but Animals is their most concise and perfectly crafted one. The only reason dark side is 2 is because there are few minutes on the album where the instrumentals are a bit lackluster and unimpressive. I am biased with a strong distaste for welcome to the machine. but it's really not that impressive.

The live part on Ummagumma is really good in my opinion, some of the renditions of tracks like A Saucerful of Secrets and Set the Controls for the heart of the sun are, in my opinion, superior and more concrete than the ones on Saucerful (while they admittedly aren't as atmospheric.) Also, Careful with that Axe Eugene is a dope song, love that scream by Roger! It may just be me, but I would rank the album way above any of the post-The Wall era.

@@planetbarrett6055 Agree. Barrett was the poetic heart and soul. Roger Waters stepped up admirably to the plate and eventually founded his own unique vision. But once you get to David Gilmour helming the band, it is OVER. There's nothing there. No soul, nothing to say. It's just empty sounds masquerading as their former greatness with no guiding vision. My list would be something like: 1. Piper 2. Wish You Were Here 3. Dark Side 4. Animals 5. The Wall Then there's a bunch of middling-to-good-to-very-good albums. Then there are the three Gilmour albums, which I don't even remotely consider to be Pink Floyd albums. And I'd agree with David Babb that Madcap Laughs/Barrett would be in the top 5 for sure, probably knocking off the Wall, which is amazing, but a little tight and streamlined for Pink Floyd.

    5. The Wall This was the first PF record I fully listened to, and I was instantly in love. I have quite a bit of nostalgia from it. My favorite thing about it is probably how personal to Roger Waters it is, it seems very biographical. The raw emotions make this a super engaging listen, however it drags pretty hard in the middle making it feel less cohesive, however Hey You is still one of my favorite songs of all time. 4. Meddle Meddle has very good individual songs. I feel One of These Days is one of the best guitar sounds in the whole Pink Floyd line up. But Echoes overshadows the rest of the album hard. It is SOOO GOOOD. It is definitely my favorite individual Pink Floyd song. 3. Wish You Were Here This record is awesome, really close to being my second(it was really hard to decide). I love the melancholy and emotional feel to it all. It feels so directed at one person and emotional(because it is). Shine on You Crazy Diamond has my favorite guitar work in all of Pink Floyd, it is really good. 2. Dark Side Of The Moon Immediately after listening to the wall I needed more, and this record is universally appraised, so I naturally gravitated to its sheer omnipresence. Needless to say... I was blown away. Hearing the lyrics of Time for the first time legitimately made me want to cry. It feels so powerful, like there is a statement that they want you to know. Dark Side is truly a spectacle, and a magnificent work of art(sprinkled in with some good ol' existential dread of course). 1. Animals Animals is musically the best out of every Pink Floyd album in my opinion. The keyboard work, mixed with the bass lines, and the epic soloing make it musically a masterpiece for me. I also think Animals has better lyrics than all other albums(except maybe Dark Side for different reasons.) It feels like a look inside Roger's mind, a dark and intimidating view on humanity, book ended between two glimpses of hope. It's a deep dive into a geniuses, admittedly disturbed, psychi, and I love it.

I had a huge Pink Floyd phase was I was 18-19 and at that time I put More in my top tier of their albums, which was a pretty hot take. I was trying to edgy or different, I guess. Now my top picks are more conventional with either Animals or Wish You Were Here at the top and Dark Side of the Moon/ The Wall trailing not far behind. I think I had the same face as Joe and Kramzer did when Jason revealed where he ranked Wish You Were Here haha. Ouch. Wish You Were Here at number eight? Jason, I love going out on a ledge, but you've completely stepped off the ledge. There's not a bad song on this album, and Have a Cigar is one of my low-key favorite songs by Floyd. I love the cynicism and sarcasm that pervades the song. It's snark taken to an art form. We're just knocked out! We heard about the sellout! The band has to make an album. You owe it to the people. We're so happy we can hardly count.

Well that was highly enjoyable. As a lifelong Floyd fan you pretty much nailed it. I think where i differ from a lot of Floyd fans is that i would actually rank The Wall a lot lower , I'd put Atom Heart Mother above it. I definatly think it's a great and seminal album but there a lot of filler tracks to me. on there. My favs would probably be Wish You Were Here, Meddle and Animals. So Pink Floyd…one of my favorite Bands of all time, definitely my favorite 70s Band. The only album I didn’t know going into this was ‘The Final Cut’. I don’t hate anything, every album is at least acceptable. Not so good Albums (2 Stars): 15. A Saucerful of Secrets (A strange album this is. ‘Set the Controls…’ is a cool song as well as the first track ‘Let there be more Light’, but apart from that, not that strong compared to the debut. They were trying to find the Pink Floyd they would become in the future. The result is a rather noncohesive album. It’s not really bad, but not convincing.) 14. The Final Cut (Kind of a Roger Waters solo album. It’s a bit like a b-collection of The Wall. All in all it gets a bit boring. Not my favorite.) 13. More (I’m not particularly fond of this album. It is not bad by any means, but nothing really grabs me, maybe except for ‘The Nile Song’. Probably their most aggressive sounding track. A bit better than ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’, but still not there yet.) 12. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (David Gilmour takes over on this one. Like ‘The Final Cut’, it is not very convincing, but in ‘Sorrow’ and ‘Learning to Fly’ it has two good songs in it.) Good Albums (3 Stars): 11. Atom Heart Mother (The title song is not of my liking. The other four tracks are great though. ‘Fat Old Sun’ contains one of Gilmour’s best solos and Summer ’68 is a great piece of songwriting. That breakfast song is also pretty funny. Always makes me remember that what the British people call marmalade is pretty disgusting food haha.) 10. Obscured by Clouds (I don’t think this is their greatest work, but there is some solid stuff on here. ‘Free Four’ and ‘The Gold it’s in the…’ are great.) 9. Ummagumma (So I’m not ranking the live tracks because you guys didn’t also. I can see why Wright’s stuff is hated, but the rest is actually quite good. Waters’ tracks are the highlight of this album. I really like that song with the long name, pretty funny. Gilmour’s stuff is good as well, and Mason’s trilogy is alright, to my mind. Not really getting the hate for this one.) 8. The Endless River (It’s a collection of leftovers from ‘Division Bell’. I see why people dislike it, it’s basically b-material, but it is b-material from a great album. So all in all not that bad. Was it necessary? Not really. Did I like it? Yes.) Really Good Albums (4 Stars): 7. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Some great psychedelic stuff on their debut. Some songs I would even describe as cute. The first four song are all really great. Overall not one song I dislike on this one.) 6. The Wall (Don’t hate me if I say that this one is overrated. The concept is cool and Side A is pretty much perfect. But Side B is dragging a bit, unfortunately; ‘Comfortably Numb’ excluded, of course.) 5. The Division Bell (Underappreciated album this one. Lots of great songs on here, but the last two are two of their best songs. ‘High Hopes’ is undeniable, ‘Poles Apart’ is also a pretty strong track. I really like this album. It does not get enough love.) Amazing Albums (5 Stars): 4. Animals (Great concept for the album. The music itself is also wonderful. ‘Sheep’ is really underrated. ‘Pigs on the Wing P. 1& 2’ are both short but sweet. ‘Pigs’ is also pretty great. Pink Floyd gunning out disstracks before it was cool. ‘Dogs’ feels quite short although it’s 17min long. Always a good sign. Super album.) 3. Meddle (Underrated by many, this is one of their masterpieces. Every song is great. ‘A Pillow of Winds’ is so beautiful and ‘Echoes’ so epic. Always love listening to it. My dog always howls when that strange guitar solo in the middle of ‘Echoes’ comes on, pretty funny. Amazing album.) 2. The Dark Side of the Moon (It’s a classic. So much is already said about this album by so many, that I don’t need to write about it anymore. From start to finish amazing. The only thing I want to say is that ‘Any Colour You Like’ is underappreciated. That synth solo is heavenly.) 1. Wish you were Here (It is very close between this and Dark Side, both albums are among the best of all time. ‘Shine on you crazy diamond’ is the worst song on the album…and it is absolutely brilliant. The other three tracks are phenomenal, 'Have a Cigar' probably contains the most important lyrics in music history. Hard to put it into words. Five thick and bright shining stars for this one.)

I'll give a Top 5 5. The Wall 4. Obscured By Clouds 3. Animals 2. Wish You Were Here 1. Dark Side Nothing too original about this list. I just think early PF is more of a curiosity, a musical direction that had perhaps a limited window of opportunity. That's certainly not to say that there aren't gems throughout their entire catalog. Later Floyd had its moments as well, though few and far between. On a different note, I have a question/request. I was wondering if you all could do an "origin story "episode as far as how you all met, early musical influences, the decision to create this channel, etc. I think it would be interesting for your viewers as your channel grows. Keep up the great work and cheers!

What many commenters, especially those who weren't alive/old enough to know/remember about Pink Floyd, is/was, that their growing emergence (eg., "Ummagumma" to "Dark Side of the Moon") ... paralleled the rapidly emerging improvement of home stereos. It was in the late 60s that many of us were starting to take our home equipment more seriously, growing out of our parent's "Sears Roebuck" furniture stereos, or mono portables....to more expensive receivers, speakers, etc. And I believe cassette tape media was just emerging. Their more experimental music opportunistically reflected the technological media.

Very enjoyable ranking, cool to see all the different opinions, a couple points and notes I have. 1. I agree with Kram that Momentary lapse of reason is better than Division bell. Somehow the sound and the songs are just better on Momentary. I also much prefer the cover art. 2. Wish you were here is not just one of PF’s best but also one of the best albums of all time. Putting The Division Bell or The Final Cut above Wish You Were Here is just absolutely wild. Songs like Welcome to the machine, Have a cigar, and the title track are simply some of the best songs of all time and full of meaning. Shine on speaks for itself. It is a phenomenal album. Maybe it’s not better than Dark Side but it’s one I go back to more frequently. 3. Meddle is so enjoyable for me, it feels experimental and expansive but also just extremely pleasant to listen to, I like every track, even the lesser ones, it somehow all hangs together, even if not as cohesive as the next few albums. There’s a sound to it that is mysterious and strangely beautiful. 4. There’s been a huge backlash against The Wall in recent years where many say it’s overrated and lackluster which I think is complete nonsense, to me it’s a front to back masterpiece and clearly one of their best albums. I suppose you either like the rock opera concept or not, but the album paired with the movie is simply an incredible auditory and visual experience, full of emotion and depth. 5. Obscured by clouds is very overlooked and I like the whole thing, even the instrumental parts because I think they’re good at that stuff. 6. Animals is one of most incredible and harrowing albums I’ve ever heard and features probably the most interesting and creative guitar parts from Gilmour, though I think I agree with Kram that The Wall has better guitar parts, just undeniably catchy and ear grabbing playing. 7. I like the early psychedelic stuff but it’s not something I go back to a lot. I do prefer Saucerful to Piper, to me it’s where they start to get the classic Floyd sound, even if not fully there you can hear it peeking through a bit on a good amount of the songs. 8. The big four are the big four for a reason and I think it’s right to have those at the top, in any order. I think the massive success of Dark Side hurt them in a way, they had to face the pressure of moving forward from that, like they were in the shadow of that album’s reputation and status. It was even David Gilmour who said that by Animals they had reached what they had set out to do and achieved the success they were after, there wasn’t anything else to look forward to in regards to that. So The Wall is the culmination of their progression, the excess and creative and commercial peak. I wish they had done more together as a band after that but I think we were still fortunate to get the albums that we did beyond that, due to all that had occurred.

Excellent video and a very difficult task indeed. 1) Animals (1977). I heard this on release as a 13 year old and it's been my favorite PF album since. Wish You Were Here has vied for that position now and again but the darkness and ugliness around this record has always fascinated me. Sheep was my favorite Pink floyd song for years.I had this on cassette at first and the way is was sequenced was awful. After Dogs on side 1 Pigs would start and fade out part way through and fade in on side 2. Horrendous. When I bought it on vinyl a few years later it was awhile before I stopped waiting for the fade out. Pigs has really grown in my opinion over the years. For me there are no dull moments. 2)Wish You Were Here (1975). The title track wasn't as overplayed in Australia as other places it seems. I still love it and the album entire. There is nothing else quite like the structures of both Animals and WYWH on and album. Joe's observations on these albums were great regarding said structure. This was a birthday gift on cassette and my first PF album. Still ove it as much today as I always did. 3)The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). A masterpiece and Barrett's veneration is fully justified in my opinion. His guitar playing alone deserves special mention. It's very primative and unschooled but he broke new ground with the use of noise and effects. Astonomy Domine is a stunning opener. "It was great when Syd joined [in late 1964]. Before him we'd play the R&B classics, because that's what all groups were supposed to do then... With Syd the direction changed, it became more improvised around the guitar and keyboards." (MOJO, May 1994) "He would do things on the guitar that no one had ever dreamed of doing, which influenced me. So that made me do things on the keyboards that I wouldn't, that people hadn't done before. Technically, no, not so brilliant, but for me all the technique is not important: it's the originality, and he was one of the originals." (Which One's Pink? - The Pink Floyd Story documentary, 2007) We would never have had classic PF without Syd's early influence.Gilmour is fantastic but once he found his sound it was just variations on the same thing solo wise. I do love it though. Wright is brilliant on Piper. Syd's songwriting was a huge influence on Robyn Hitchcock. 4) The Dark Side of the Moon (1973). Probably deserves to be higher but this is the one I've heard too much. A groundbreaking masterpiece nonetheless. 5) Meddle (1971). It took me awhile to appreciate this one but Echoes is very special. I do prefer the Live in Pompeii versions of Echoes and One of these Days. The other songs are quite forgettable. 6) Obscured by Clouds (1972) I've grown to appreciate this much more over the years and it may rise higher over time. If it wasn't for Echoes, Meddle would rank lower than this album. Gilmour really finds his classic sound on this album. Free Four is great! 7) The Final Cut (1983). Always liked this more than The Wall. 8) The Wall (1979). Brilliantly executed album but so up and down with many terrible songs. I don't enjoy spending time with the awful main character - I have zero sympathy for the man baby. I hate side 2 and 4, especially The Trial and so on that is just awful and gimmicky. A shame as there are some great moments and details, however as a whole it's impossible for me to sit through. A few classic songs only keep me from ranking it lower. A real letdown to me at the time even from a young age following Animals and the two that preceded it. For the first time on a PF album the concept became more important than the actual songs and we ended up with a bloated over produced mess. Yuck! 9) Atom Heart Mother (1970). A sentimental favorite which doesn't hold up so well these days. This was the very first vinyl LP I bought with my own money. I used to love it but it now sounds laboured. Wright's Summer 68 and Fat Old Sun are ok. I hate If. It took poor old Roger awhile to get some great songs under his belt. A late bloomer perhaps. 10) More (1969). I like this one a lot more than most.I really like Cirrus Minor and Cymbaline which contradicts my statement about Roger above. I do think Wright should get a lot more credit for his early input and a large part of why I still go back to early floyd is Wright's input not Roger's or David's. 11) A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). Kinda boring and aimless after Piper. I do love Jugband Blues. There is a strange melancholy in that song. Wright carries this album musically but See Saw is plain awful. Remember a Day is another highlight. The live Ummagumma and Pompeii versions beat these studio versions.Never Listen to this one. 12/13) A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) The Division Bell (1994). Interchangeable but in later years I've probably begun to like D/Bell more Momentary. I don't care about either of these much nowadays. I hate Dogs of War which would be my least favorite PF song at least at a time when Gilmour should have known better. Far too much Gilmour sentimentality on these. Not Pink floyd really. Having said that I saw them in 1988 and it was fantastic. At the time I liked Momentary Lapse but I don't much now. 15) The Endless River (2014) Boring. Bought it and sold it very quickly. I remember almost nothing about it. Pleasant enough but I did feel cheated. Ummagumma (1969). Yep pretty awful, only the live record saves it from the bin. If it was just the live record it would be an improvement. Set list from Adelaide 88 show: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) Signs of Life Learning to Fly Yet Another Movie Round and Around A New Machine (Part 1) Terminal Frost A New Machine (Part 2) Sorrow The Dogs of War On the Turning Away One of These Days Time On the Run Wish You Were Here Welcome to the Machine Us and Them Money Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 Comfortably Numb Encore: One Slip Run Like Hell

I'd like to know what Phil Manzanera's contribution to the track One Slip on A Momentary Lapse Of Reason was. He gets a credit for the song, and it's interesting (for me, anyways)to note David Gilmour was also playing with Bryan Ferry in the 80's, too. I guess Roxy Music and Pink Floyd could both be classed as "art-rock" bands, so there is a connection. Really great watching Ferry and Gilmour playing onstage together at Live Aid. As for their best album, definitely Animals (1977). Difficult to warm to, lots of anger, but rewards and then some to persistent listeners.

Hey you (pun intended), as with most videos I really enjoyed this one. But I‘d like to suggest that with each new entry you‘d write down (on screen) your previous albums so the viewers can read where this or that record was placed. It’s hard to keep track with three top10 (or whatever number) lists. Especially if the viewer doesn’t watch all the way through the video. That would make it so much more enjoyable because I sometimes need to rewatch some passages if I missed or forgot who rated which album high or low… I‘m not a native speaker, I hope you got what I was trying to say 🙈🥴😅

Being (a lot) older than you guys, I kind of grew up with the band from an earlier age, and I think that affects one's take on the albums. Without going into too much detail, my ratings were matched closest by Kramzer. The odd thing with me, although the topic was touched on by one of the other guys, is the difference between rating albums and actually listening to them. To be honest, I rarely listen to The Wall, Dark Side, or Animals anymore, despite, for many years, The Wall being my favourite album of all time. Out of the big 4, WYWH is the only one that I still listen to quite regularly. Animals has never been one of my favourites, and I find the other two, these days, just too overblown - and I listened to them too many times as a teenager. The Pink Floyd album I listen to the most still is Atom Heart Mother, I think the title track is brilliant, and what no-one here mentioned is the role which Water's friend, the crazy Scotsman Ron Geesin played in writing and orchestrating the piece. He wrote the beautiful cello melody that appears quite early on the track, as well as the parts for brass. He was rather "undermentioned" on the sleeve, but does get a songwriting credit for the track. I find this album incredibly musical and easy to listen to. While I agree that Dark Side is legendary, to my mind it's not perfect. I think On the Run is a blip, and I've never really taken to Money, either, with its odd time signature and generally goofy feel. The rest of the album is pretty perfect though.

I’m with you all on the early stuff, everyone loves the middle stuff, and the later stuff ( minus endless river) have steadily risen to my top ranking and are underrated to me. My go-to for Floyd. The remixed recent version of MLOR may interest you if you are put off by the glossy production of the original. I like both. Also Pulse may be the single most epic recording I’ve ever heard and seen.

@@willstooksbury1477 Can take them or leave them. I don’t mind them but I very rarely feel in the mood to listen to them. Had them on CD years ago. Ended up swapping a big chunk of my Floyd collection for other albums. Loved Floyd in my teens and early 20’s but as I got older my music taste widened and PF dropped way down my list apart from a few albums in the 1970’s.

Agreed. Final cut is beyond dreary, essentially a Roger solo album. Momentaty is generic, terrible lyrics. Division bell is ok. High hopes is a great song. Most of the stuff before meddle is nonsense

My favourite Pink Floyd albums are as follows... 1. Piper at the Gates of Dawn 2. The Madcap Laughs 3. The Early Singles 4. Barrett 😊 I like some of the stuff on the 'Saucerful of Secrets' and 'More' LPs but after that, Barrett's backing group just sound dull.

colemann76 Meh. I don’t rate it lower than The Endless River and Ummagumma by much, as “Learning To Fly”, “On The Turning Away” and “One Slip” are good and probably better than anything on TER, but there are a bunch of songs I really don’t like at all (“The Dogs Of War”, “Yet Another Movie”, “Sorrow”, and both parts of “A New Machine”). So that and the dated production is why it’s at the bottom for me.

15: Endless River - (shameless cash grab - avoid) 14: Ummagumma - (SIDE A: uninspired live tracks SIDE B : unlistenable noodling - avoid) 13: Atom Heart Mother (a couple of decent tracks but far from essential) 12: A Momentary Lapse of Reason (very dated 80s dad rock) 11: Obscured by Clouds (i never seem to remember anything about this) 10: The Division Bell (has its moments but suffers from no Waters input) 9: A Saucerful of Secrets (set the controls and a few other ok things) 8: The Final Cut (sounds like outtakes from the Wall, some of it really hits) 7: More (does a lot More for me than most, very under rated imo) 6: The Wall (floyds white album, a bit bloated but theres a lot of good to great stuff on here) 5: Wish You Were Here (thought it would rank higher, shine on and the title track save it from mediocrity) 4: Meddle (their first top tier record post syd barrett) 3: Piper At the Gates of Dawn (i love the syd era) 2: Animals (took a few listens to fully appreciate and a bit of a downer but its genius concept masterfully pulled off) 1: Dark Side of the Moon - (genuine contender for greatest album of all time)
