With today's modern technology I feel as if 3 ft gauge railroads could manage. I constantly fantasize about trains in the Rockies being revived to haul goods from the big cities to smaller towns up in the mountains, an ideal route to start would be Denver-Idaho Springs. Instead of ore, the train could carry produce, mail, and building supplies to stores in the area, taking the job from trucks and sparing the narrow mountain roads tons of wear. Possibly with the use of EMUs, a tourist or even commuter train would also work. Obviously, the sad truth is that rebuilding the line would cost a ton with today's regulations, narrow gauge trains are way slower than driving, and trucking is much cheaper and more accessible. One can only imagine, though.

Thanks for asking. Glad you like the effect. Here's how I do it: 1. Search something like "Steam green screen" and find one you like. 2. Download that video. I purchased a program called Wondershare Uniconverter. It's been worth it because of the download option. 3. In your editing program (I use Final Cut Pro) put the downloaded green screen smoke video on top (above) of your image in a video project timeline. 4. Find an effect in your video editing program called something like "Green Screen Keyer." 5. Drag (apply) that onto (as in 'into') the green screen smoke video clip. That will remove the green and leave just the smoke. 6. After that I play around with shrinking or stretching the smoke to fit how I want. Sometimes I even layer it with the same clip to make the steam bigger and so forth. Lastly, add some audio from a steam engine and voila! I hope that makes sense.

Different than when I was young and living in Pitkin off and on from '57 until about '93 . Much more brush and little Quakies along the grade now . Was a lot of debris still in Woodstock and more telegraph poles . My brother and I tried to get a switch out of the trees at Woodstock but it was too heavy .We used to climb down into the West portal and the tunnel was in pretty good shape until the cave-in because all the timbers were Redwood and didn't rot . The water in it was cold ! Was always a popular drive because the incline was so gradual . Back then the road had not been beat to death by a million four wheelers and was an easy trip in a sedan . Was rare to see anyone else on the trip up and back . Had several buckets of spikes i would try to sell to the tourists for a nickel apiece .
@searchingforthecsnarrowgau88533 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing those memories! I wonder what happened to the switch stand and debris at Woodstock. I've never explored the townsite directly besides just looking from the roadbed. It doesn't look like anything is left. I envy your opportunities to have gotten in the tunnel! Interesting note about the brush along the grade. I wish the view were less obstructed. Do you still have any of those spikes left?
@JMlovesDDM3 ай бұрын
Over the years "scroungers" made off with most everything left in the whole area , even out of my front yard ! Most all of the wood from the structures just rots away over the years . Afraid I don't have any spikes any more , left behind when I moved. You might still find some , especially around Quartz as they stockpiled supplies there .Sit quietly at night with no people around near the tunnel and you might hear a ghostly whistle !

@searchingforthecsnarrowgau88533 ай бұрын
These tracks were relaid after the railroad was long gone (I don't recall at the moment who did it). Thankfully, the part of the railroad grade that had been converted for auto use bypassed this particular section. That way it was possible to lay some track.

Sometimes I even layer it with the same clip to make the steam bigger and so forth. Lastly, add some audio from a steam engine and voila! I hope that makes sense.
@@searchingforthecsnarrowgau8853 Super helpful, thank you! I’ve got something working just now!
@@PistonRodProductions very cool! I'd love to see it!
Love this channel to bits. Thank you so much for your hard work bringing this famous railroad alive.
You're welcome. It's a joy to do it.
Another video should be up in early May
If there’s any locomotive I’d make a new build of it’d be a Mason Bogie based off those of the DSP&P.
That would be an awesome sight! I love all the ornate features on them in the builder's photos.
Ah, memories! 😊
Cute! 😊
Over the years "scroungers" made off with most everything left in the whole area , even out of my front yard ! Most all of the wood from the structures just rots away over the years . Afraid I don't have any spikes any more , left behind when I moved. You might still find some , especially around Quartz as they stockpiled supplies there .Sit quietly at night with no people around near the tunnel and you might hear a ghostly whistle !
SLAY PADRE😃😃
Always, mi hija!
I like that you’ve invested the time and effort to match things up perfectly, it makes your videos so enjoyable… Just yesterday I discovered where the subject of an old postcard that I’ve seen for sale on an off for over a year is located. Google street view is an amazing resource. A group of men standing on a steep hillside apparently looking at something across a ravine, but where was it. Now I know exactly, and I purchased the postcard for my collection. The Devils Rocking Chair still exists a hundred years later, I’ll have to visit it in person.
Thanks! Lining up old photos with today is one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes I try to recreate the position on purpose when I take a photo and sometimes, like the one in the video here, happen by accident.
Does anybody on earth know what happened to the Central city railroad/mining museum? They haven’t updated anything on their website since 2022, and I can’t find anything on their social media sites I have found. I assume the operation petered out, but it’s strange to me they haven’t updated their website to say as such.
I'm going on memory here, but I thought I read that they went before the city to propose their idea and they did not receive the support or go-ahead. That's the last I heard. I hope that's not just hearsay. I too have not been able to find anything official anywhere else online.
@@searchingforthecsnarrowgau8853 Sounds about right. Here say or not, that’s more information then I have found. Still strange to me that they haven’t said anything about it, but sometimes there are only so many answers.
It is good that some portions of track were left to identify the old roadbed of the route
These tracks were relaid after the railroad was long gone (I don't recall at the moment who did it). Thankfully, the part of the railroad grade that had been converted for auto use bypassed this particular section. That way it was possible to lay some track.
More very interesting information on the C&S rolling stock, that lived on , on the RGS. This Refrigerator car really NEEDS to be restored ("double sided graphics") and used as part of the operating rolling stock at the CRM.
Someone told me recently that a budget was approved to at least give it a new roof.
I would've paid big bucks if I was at that auction😤, I know someone who would've loved it :D
The refrigerator car would fit in our backyard, but it would be tough to play ping-pong there, though :)

Oops, I mean badminton!
Where did you get the train sounds they are amazing!
It's audio from an old 1980's Cumbres & Toltec Scenic or Durango & Silverton (can't recall which) cab ride video.
if Forest Service doesnt let it burn the pine beetles will get the forest. California used to have vast healthy forests like so many great things California used to be known for. Now the liberals have ruined just about everything. Either from neglect or burdensome taxes
If they were to run the C & S trains today, I think theyveould have a much bbetter chance of not having wrecks and going over the sides ofvthe cliffs as they did in the 1890's and early 1900's.
I think you're right. So many trees were gone because they were chopped down for railroad and mine usage to my knowledge. The trees could have helped in stopping some of the snow slides and also kept equipment from sliding so far possibly.
Looks like a pretty good graveled roadbed that the trains use to run on. Pretty scenery too!
Fake! No tracks!
We were there this past October (2023), very rough road getting to Sherrod Loop, road was closed just above this point due to a road washout and rockslide just above the Palisades. We were able to walk to that point, but late in the afternoon kept us from getting to the West Portal. Beautiful country for sure!
