Following the C&S Ry. from Midway Tank to rock wall (Part 3)

Part 3 of this series follows the DSP&P/C&S route from the ruins of Midway water tank to a large rock wall constructed to support the railroad's right-of-way on the mountainside. The approximate site of Valley Spur as well as rock cribbing on the uphill side constructed by the South Park Line are also pointed out. Quotes from historian and author of Historic Alpine Tunnel Dow Helmers when visiting in the 1960's, 53 years after abandonment, as well as quotes from Charles C. Squire, who recounts a trip in 1897, and a Denver newsman who rode the train in 1882 are interspersed.

Too many trees blocking the view these days! Thanks for video. Mark

True! Those pesky trees make a lot of then-and-now photos hard to pull off. The Georgetown Loop area is another one where the amount of trees in the present is dramatically different from the bare hills of C&S operation days.

I truly appreciate your kind comments. One of my favorite parts of making these is sharing it with so many others who enjoy them. Since I live so far away from Colorado and can't join in things like Como work days, this gives me a little chance to contribute to the memory of the C&S.

More great footage with the old pictures was a nice affect. Looking forward to visiting this area this summer and camping in the area to do some exploring.

Different than when I was young and living in Pitkin off and on from '57 until about '93 . Much more brush and little Quakies along the grade now . Was a lot of debris still in Woodstock and more telegraph poles . My brother and I tried to get a switch out of the trees at Woodstock but it was too heavy .We used to climb down into the West portal and the tunnel was in pretty good shape until the cave-in because all the timbers were Redwood and didn't rot . The water in it was cold ! Was always a popular drive because the incline was so gradual . Back then the road had not been beat to death by a million four wheelers and was an easy trip in a sedan . Was rare to see anyone else on the trip up and back . Had several buckets of spikes i would try to sell to the tourists for a nickel apiece .

Thanks for sharing those memories! I wonder what happened to the switch stand and debris at Woodstock. I've never explored the townsite directly besides just looking from the roadbed. It doesn't look like anything is left. I envy your opportunities to have gotten in the tunnel! Interesting note about the brush along the grade. I wish the view were less obstructed. Do you still have any of those spikes left?

Over the years "scroungers" made off with most everything left in the whole area , even out of my front yard ! Most all of the wood from the structures just rots away over the years . Afraid I don't have any spikes any more , left behind when I moved. You might still find some , especially around Quartz as they stockpiled supplies there .Sit quietly at night with no people around near the tunnel and you might hear a ghostly whistle !
