Following the C&S Ry. from Alpine to Glen Cliff

This video rides on the former Denver South Park & Pacific, Denver Leadville & Gunnison, Colorado & Southern narrow gauge right-of-way eastbound from the townsite of Alpine (later renamed Fisher) to the townsite of Glen Cliff (originally named Cascade). A siding is pointed out along the way. This route originally (westbound) connected with the famed Alpine Tunnel. When service through the tunnel was discontinued in 1910 the railroad ran a stub line from Buena Vista through to Hancock and Romley until 1924.

With today's modern technology I feel as if 3 ft gauge railroads could manage. I constantly fantasize about trains in the Rockies being revived to haul goods from the big cities to smaller towns up in the mountains, an ideal route to start would be Denver-Idaho Springs. Instead of ore, the train could carry produce, mail, and building supplies to stores in the area, taking the job from trucks and sparing the narrow mountain roads tons of wear. Possibly with the use of EMUs, a tourist or even commuter train would also work. Obviously, the sad truth is that rebuilding the line would cost a ton with today's regulations, narrow gauge trains are way slower than driving, and trucking is much cheaper and more accessible. One can only imagine, though.

I would really like to know what condition the road to the tunnel is in! I would like to get up there this summer (2024). Thanks

It's easy to get to the site of Hancock. From there it's a 3-mile hike to the east portal. One the western approach, it's a lot bumpier, but you can get to Sherrop Loop and then you have to part and walk about the same distance (3 miles) to the station complex and the west portal. They are working to reopen it for auto traffic, but it looks like that might happen next year.
