Following the C&S Ry from Woodstock to Sherrod (Part 7) - The Road to Alpine Tunnel

Part 7 of this series follows the DSP&P/C&S route from the destroyed and abandoned townsite of Woodstock to the reverse curve named Sherrod Loop or Curve. Once the railroad curved back it began its final climb, clinging to the mountainside past the imposing Palisades, up toward the famous Alpine Tunnel.

We were there this past October (2023), very rough road getting to Sherrod Loop, road was closed just above this point due to a road washout and rockslide just above the Palisades. We were able to walk to that point, but late in the afternoon kept us from getting to the West Portal. Beautiful country for sure!

Boy, the pine bark beetles have sure decimated much of the standing timber!

It's audio from an old 1980's Cumbres & Toltec Scenic or Durango & Silverton (can't recall which) cab ride video.

I always thought sherrod loop was on private land. Guess I was wrong.

I think you are right, but it is only partially on private land. I don't know the exact area, but the relaid track is part of the Forest Service. Somewhere beyond this is where it must be private. If I had to guess it is where the roadbed is hard to identify (you can kind of tell in my Google Earth portion). When we visited I made a quick walk beyond the relaid track and there was a washout at one point. I wonder if the portion beyond that was the private property?

Apparently, you can buy the Town of Sherrod! Here is the link: www.homes.com/property/7800-forest-service-road-839-pitkin-co/f73drsy16rt3b/

I think you are correct too. I have studied that area and hiked around that entire grade for 30 years now and the loop was always kind of a bermuda triangle... of course the entire grade on the st. Elmo side up to the tunnel is on private land. Sure glad that guy allowed for hikers to use the grade. So greatful for that.@searchingforthecsnarrowgau8853
