Now and Then: Reopening Alpine Tunnel

By 1890, railway management had given up on keeping the under-10-year-old Alpine Tunnel line open. Years later new management, under the newly organized Denver, Leadville & Gunnison Railway, decided to give it another go. A special June 1895 train was chartered to run over the line through the tunnel in order to honor this reopening of the fabled line. This video takes a photo of that train and compares it to the same spot today.

I like that you’ve invested the time and effort to match things up perfectly, it makes your videos so enjoyable… Just yesterday I discovered where the subject of an old postcard that I’ve seen for sale on an off for over a year is located. Google street view is an amazing resource. A group of men standing on a steep hillside apparently looking at something across a ravine, but where was it. Now I know exactly, and I purchased the postcard for my collection. The Devils Rocking Chair still exists a hundred years later, I’ll have to visit it in person.

Thanks! Lining up old photos with today is one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes I try to recreate the position on purpose when I take a photo and sometimes, like the one in the video here, happen by accident.

You GET the Alpine Tunnel! First time I went up there (from Pitkin, '82), as I went at slow but steady pace through the cuts and over the fills (trestles) in my rented Ford Escort, the impression of being on the railroad came strongly to me. Your videos showing then and now, and the family "steaming" up to East Portal, and now this -- a dreamlike quality that shows you really get it! That I should get to correspond w/ someone who "gets it" who is also a talented video producer is just incredible. Thanks for that lovely video!

That is actually a really high compliment-thanks! I have loved all-things-Alpine-Tunnel since stumbling on the book Historic Alpine Tunnel in junior high. Our first visit was in 1990 when my dad drove a Ford Taurus rental car up to Woodstock and we walked the rest to the west portal. I'm so glad you like the videos!

Nice video of matching new & old. I would have liked it more if the captions had remained a few more seconds.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the tip on the captions. I do struggle with how long to leave them on. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future.

After you have done your 'final' edit, try replaying for yourself or better yet someone else and try reading and comprehending the caption. If you can't do both it hasn't been left up long enough.
