Small Wonders: The Alpine Tunnel

Join Colorado Railroad Museum Curator of Collections, Stephanie Gilmore to explore "Small Wonders" from the Museum's collection as part of the new “Still Working On The Railroad” initiative. Each segment will focus on different items from the Colorado Railroad Museum’s collection.
Perhaps the most significant artifacts we have from the Alpine Tunnel are 2 original signs that used to adorn the station, which once guarded the highest non-cog section of railroad in the world. The highest cog railroad is of course the Manitou and Pike’s Peak located near Colorado Springs. However, the highest adhesion railroad in the United States was the Denver, South Park & Pacific, which included the Alpine Tunnel.

Drove a Front wheel drive "Datsun"- small car, my wife and our oldest son- who's now almost 45 to the tunnel station in the early 1980's - long before the Palisades collapse.

My family and I visited the tunnel in the early 1990's, the Palisades was blocked by a rockslide then, but as we were on dirt bikes and atv's, we were able to traverse it without too much difficulty.

Very cool video. I viewed both sides on a CT hike and wondered if an engine and the crew are still in there. Thank you.

Argentine Central goes up over 13,000, granted it was gone by 1918.
