Galadriel becomes the villain - Rings of Power - Desolation of Galadriel in 7 episodes

In an attempt to change the lore and to subvert the expectations of the audiences, Amazon delivered a mediocre, unengaging character. By episode 7, Galadriel has not only bored us to death but also revealed slightly murderous tendencies.

It's really interesting how Galadriel just forgot about Celeborn, her husband of several centuries, the father of her still-unmentioned daughter. In episode 7 she wrote off Celeborn as dead or "lost" even though we know he's alive and will somehow take her back and eventually sail to Valinor with her. But instead of showing any interest in his fate (or her daughter's), she's off on some maniacal ice-climbing adventure to hunt orcs to the one place on the continent that seems to have none. And even though her devoted husband is off screen and probably being tortured somewhere, she's making doe eyes with Sauron and calling him "King". Yup, that's exactly how heroes behave.

Ya this is where the writers and producers betray their Hollywood cultural values. A woman with a husband has less agency in their eyes. A man can only serve to diminish her. It's really a very warped view of human love, and makes you kinda sad for them. The Galadriel they created is a horrific genocidal sociopath whom they see as inspirational and strong. It is ... strange. It's also why these people can't make good art with long lasting appeal, because one cannot help to infuse their own art with their own beliefs and ideologies, which is why Tolkien's books still speak to us.

It's not just the writing of her character. It's the actress's delivery. The nasty hissing between closed teeth, the hollow eyed stares, the non-radient scowling and the poor body language. Just piled on top of the horrible divergences from Tolkein's VERY COMPELLING source material.

@@backwardscompatible9238 I have not watched the video, but I do not believe Galadriel is a villain or evil, she is just wants to get revenge for the death of a loved one. She understands that she is wrong tho and tries throughout the series to soften up a little. But its not so easy to change as a person. She became that way throughout hundreds of years. She wants to protect middle earth from evil as well. But I agree her character could have been written waaay better and at least with more emotion.

Amazing writing

Of course. Mary Sue Galadriel suffered more than anyone who ever lived in the entire history of the universe. Mary Sues always have to engage in that kind trauma- trumping. They have to be better than anyone at everything, and that includes suffering. I almost laughed when to Elrond that he "had not known evil" since in canon, he was orphaned at the age of 7 when his home was attacked by Galadriel's cousins. He witnessed his servants and family friends being killed in front of him, and then his mother, driven almost mad by despair and the Silmaril jumped off a cliff. Yes, the gods turned her into a swan so she could go off with his dad to Valinor: but he was never allowed to return. He never saw his parents again. His grandparents and uncles were also murdered by the same guys who attacked his home. Like, 'xcuse me? Most of his family were murdered by Galadriel's kinfolk at an age when he was much younger than she had been when she left Valinor. And just to top it all, he was then raised by the people had attacked his home and whose brothers killed his family. But sure- he has not "seen what she has seen!" She lost her brother. and that is SO much worse!

ROP Galadriel is an outright psychopath. She actually displays many of the characteristics of pyschopaths, including a total lack of conscience and empathy, being manipulative, and prone to calculated acts of violence. What's more, she seems to delight in violence. She actually seems to enjoy killing. Violence is a compulsion for her. In Episode 5, when Haldbrand asked her why she kept fighting she said "because I cannot stop". She's literally *addicted* to violence and killing in the same way as people are addicted to drugs or gambling. She can't give it up. She has to sate her bloodlust as people must feed the addiction.

Even if you can get past the fact that this is generic fantasy masking as Tolkien's work, or the terrible lead actress, or the generic look and bad CGI - Galadriel is incredibly powerful. She's an insanely powerfull sorceress. Evil flees before her when she approaches. She couldn't poke evil with a sword if she wanted to, it would have fled by the time she gets there. It's ridiculous. Why would the makers of this series make her more aggressive, but at the same time basically powerless? Just imagine how Galadriel would deal with that shark thing that ate the raft. She could make it eat its own tail if she put her mind to it. Literally, her mind. That's all she needs.

Some payed shills are mentioning PJ's films as examples of lore breaking to justify this attrocity. Yes, it has some ''artistic liberties'' in all 6 movies but... It also has a very talented team of scriptwritters, a burning desire to all of the ''behind the scenes'' people to deliver their best to bring Middle Earth to life, and above all, a cast of well known /respected/talented actors who put their souls in their roles and they really delivered. And most critical? They didnt violate the lore and they stay true to Tolkiens spirit. That was the recipe for the undying success these films will forever have. RoP on the other hand is a product of a megacompany, and its owner the beyond rich bold smeagol called bezos. No soul, no interest, not even one recognisable actor (i cant even think of one that could play in PJ's movies), tons of toxic attitude and above all. No interest about anything Tolkien wrote, only a huge desire to promote the diversity and political correct ideas. Its not strange that everybody hates this shit called RoP. This is exactly how they imagine a strong woman: bratty, arrogant and malicious narcissist. Because that´s what they are. One of the key aspects of narcissistic personality is the narcs don´t have empathy and self-reflection, so no matter how terrible their behavior is it´s never bad in their eyes and it´s everyone else´s fault when they mess up something. Genocidal maniac Guyladriel or sociopathic Harfoots who leave behind the weak and make fun of it are typical self-inserts of the narcissistic writers. Galadriel is practically unhinged as a result. Elrond is manipulated at every turn whenever his father is mentioned yet is able to help Durin with that touching story. Interesting to see how the First Age events affected these characters. Elves are sniping, petty, manipulative and ambitious; They're using Valinor as a dumping ground for political dissidents; all glorious! They're a far cry from the defeated people in the movie trilogy.

We invite all to discover our "Exsurge Tolkien" and have a counter perspective to ROP and discover how it is full of heresy and hubris. The heresy of hubris is the most damning, for it is the single vice that binds all the persons developing The Rings of Power to the supremacy of a will that is Anti-Tolkien, ironically leading the very destruction of the beloved treasure the "Theyocracy" of the machine claims to cherish. The showrunner's design for ROP aligns with the mortal sin that fundamentally changes the craft of Professor Tolkien's Canon and the spectacular secondary world, as Melkor enslaved, corrupted, and broke the firstborn children of Iluvatar, the elves.

And here is the thing, the really insane thought that you have to try and wrap your head around. I think it's fair to say that our myths and stories, our heroes and their examples, are a big part of how a society develops, the norms that it keeps, and the ideals that it holds sacred. Now, for all means and purposes, these writers did their best to have her, in their minds, going above and beyond everyone and everything, she was to be the paragon of virtue and all the admirable traits that define a hero. That being said, she was written with the mindset that her actions, all this crazy shit, all the very questionable actions and moments, the non existing compassion for anything other than what she wants, has to be seen as all highly virtuous acts. That's a really eye opening moment when you think that a current generation, or at least a percentage it, and the one that controls basically what amounts to subliminal programming to a degree, can find her actions to be honorable in the least. Basically, in short, with each day that goes by now and all the issues and insanity... think we're just basically and royally fucked at this point. We're basically in the death throws of a dying system and as much as people talk shit about it, it was literally the best thing anyone has had in the history of the world up to this point, and was very far ahead of the rest in means of quality of life for the very large majority. What's next, despite the pinkos preaching different, I don't see being better but rather infinitely worse. The death of Rome led to the Dark Ages in Europe... just imagine that with modern tech...

On the positive note perhaps the backlash that this show is getting is a sign of hope and not all is lost. But it is very true that the fact that the story was written in the belief that Galadriel Is, as you you said, her actions are virtuous - and this is a very concerning signs of the direction that the culture is going in.

You know, I feel you, and I don't disagree, but the future hasn't been written yet. We write it with our actions. And despair is the best way to bring about the future you are despairing over. I think Denethor's character is Tolkien exploring this idea.

Great show, but simply it is not Tolkien story. In my opinion Galadriel and Sauron are great characters, their interactions are heart of this show so far, I do like it. But I must emphathize am not looking for Tolkien books in this show at all. I simply look for interesting engaging story. This story has many minor flaws(to many subplots for example), but main characters and their interactions are just great.

Something I think is important to recognize - coming from someone who sees a lot of flaws in this show but still finds it enjoyable over all - is that Galadriel is _not_ the hero. No one is. Tolkien's work can essentially be divided into two big thematic sections: _Lord of the Rings_ is the story of how *weakness triumphs;* everything before that, from the _Silmarillion_ to _The Hobbit,_ is about how *greatness fails.* I was worried at first that this show, coming from Amazon in the twenty-first century, wouldn't understand that, but that conversation in Episode 6 (along with a few other things that happened that episode) actually reassured me that the filmmakers had some idea of the themes they were dealing with and that Galadriel's character was going somewhere. It was reassuring to see her villainous tendencies acknowledged, setting her up for the long-term character growth that climaxes in her rejection of the power to do exactly what she's talking about here when Frodo offers her the One Ring. Over all, the show has some inconsistencies and is definitely working on a TV show production schedule, but I don't mind hanging out in these storytellers' version of Middle-Earth for a while as all these various threads work their way through.

ROP "Galadriel" is completely different to Tolkien's Galadriel. The former is petulant, uncaring, vengeful and evil - everything that Tolkien's Galadriel rejected, long before the Second Age. By this time she was at least 4,000 years old, married with a 1,000 year old daughter, and considered one of the wisest beings in Middle Earth. The whole point of Frodo offering her the Ring is that it is evil and will corrupt even the best of characters if they use it - the same reason Gandalf and Elrond rejected it. "Over all, the show has some inconsistencies" Yes in the same way that the sea is not above the clouds...

It's not the story of how weakness triumphs, it's the story that the strength of a people is in the goodness of their hearts, the small acts of kindness, the willingness to have faith in the face of the darkness and pain in life. Rather than the triumph of weakness I would call it the strength of faith.

A character has to be properly motivated. The audience knows that small women are not typically as strong as the men around them, so why is she so strong? Show us. Why is she so angry? Her brother died... along with thousands of other people. Why does this affect Galadriel so much more than other elves? Show us. Is she a good leader? We're showed the opposite, and that her soldiers are incompetent without her. None of this endears the character to the audience. I contend that if the writers could properly and competently explain why she is who she is, people would not hate her so much. I sometimes will also say "I hate this generation so much" but I would be referencing the terrible writing and disrespect and disregard for Tolkien's lore and intentions. But then, I'm not of this generation 🤷‍♂️

  • @LilPinkPoodle7

Interesting... I liked her... She's a warrior...on a mission. If she was a man and not so pretty people wouldn't even bat an eye at her actions and manner of speaking. I think her mannerisms will change and that's what long series like to do now. They start off a character with one disposition and gradually change them into another. That makes things interesting. Just like making us all believe he was a human and he ends up being the dark lord LOL. Daenerys was a good heir to the throne and once she gets there she Burns it all up. It would not be surprising to me that she softens her ways after being so duped by him. Then It will humble and soften her. Again, it's a contrast to see such a pretty girl so full of revenge and murderous anger. The contrast between her looks and personality is what throws people off. I think the finale will have changed her personality. Especially seeing as she had to melt down her brother's dagger. The knife is the icon for her revenge. It's a visual telltale of her transformation to come.

Well, that's very obviously the writers' intentions. I don't think they pulled it off. For one, they failed to explain her motivations. She's vengeful. Why? Her brother died. In a war. Where thousands of elves and men died. Everyone she knows has lost almost everyone they know in this great war. I can't believe that this character would react in this way, this uniquely from everyone else, because they haven't explained it. When she talks the Numenorean queen into invading the Southlands, I don't believe it. The queen has only reason to feel annoyed at her. She has been rude and entitled, so why would the queen warm to her, agree to assemble an army to save a land they know nothing about? The writers are just failing to convince the audience of the stakes, and that the characters know the stakes.
