The show has better characters than the PJ LotR adaptations. The show only ruins one existing character, Galadriel, while the PJ movies ruin many characters. The PJ movies degrade Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Treebeard, Gimli and Legolas, and they butcher Aragorn, Denethor and Faramir.

The scene where Elf Karen casually advocates for genocide could have been used to show that in her quest for revenge, she was no better than Sauron, and from this revelation she could have a change of heart. Holy shit. I just realized something. The writers are LITERALLY comicbook villains. What do I mean? Because in the scene where Gal- sorry, Strong Woman threatens Papa Orc (?), we all realize she's fucking nuts and evil to the bone, yeah? But you know what I bet the writers though? "Oh wow, we're gonna show just how strong and powerful Strong Woman is!" They literally, by default, associate power with cruelty. And they don't know or care that they're in the wrong. It's actually really ironic.

@RollandB unfortunately, the wide accessibility of the internet, as well as it's arguably primary use of stress relief (for most people) leaves online lingo feeling virtually the same, until some new big thing shakes stuff up and adds a new word or two. I agree that use of language is uninspired, but nobody comes to a KZread comment section looking for particularly well written or verbose literature. It's not that people on the internet can't or won't write their opinions more imaginatively; you're looking for nice writing in a place where nobody intends to write it. If I have particularly profound thoughts or, God forbid, an original argument, I certainly won't leave it in a KZread comment section; not if I care about it. I post it on a blog, or make a video if I want it on this platform, or I privately discuss with like-minded individuals.

And boy oh boy, just imagine how the real Galadriel would react to THAT -- she despised her uncle more than any other Elf, to the point where he was the sole creature of their kind she refused to show mercy or kindness to. And here we have a case of a caricature of her being reduced to a caricature of him. Her armour even displays star-like designs, which were in canon indicative of Feanor's sigil/house. The more I witness of these writers the more convinced I am they can't be serious. They HAVE to be parodying the content of the books. It just boggles the mind that any person with half a brain who has bothered to read Tolkien would take any of these ideas seriously, and wish to genuinely implement them in their show as proof of the faithfulness and competence of the adaptation.

Holy shit I had no idea they made Galadriel this vile. I remember the Discworld novel "Men at Arms". In that book the point at the end is that villains and bad people love to torture, gloat and monologue before killing someone. On the other hand, a good man who has to kill a villain will quickly get it over with. Put the bad guy out of his misery, don't give them the chance to turn the table, do it efficiently so you can get back to doing good elsewhere. Why would they make Galadriel say this. Do they think she needs to be an antihero to be relatable? If so they have gone way too far on the sliding scale. This guy is a victim of Sauron. What if Sauron had taken her brother Finrod and mind-f***ed him into becoming like Adar?

Completely agree! So much of this episode made no sense at all… Also, Galadriel’s threat to Adar was almost a parody of what Morgoth did to Húrin - imprison him, doom his family, be forced to watch them live and die horribly, and then finally be allowed to die himself with the knowledge that his line has ended. Cruelty to the max… and she is supposed to be the good guy? Obviously Gil-Galad knew what he was doing by banishing her and her followers to the Undying Lands - he must have known that after 200 years searching for Sauron, if she didn’t find him soon, she’d straight up become him. Wait… hahaha… wouldn’t that be hilarious? Sneering “Galadriel” has been Sauron all along… the real Galadriel is strung up in a hidden stronghold somewhere watching all this nonsense through a Palantir or some other magic. That would almost redeem them for her terrible characterization.

@The Attempt has nothing to do with the culture war and everything to do with bad writing. The amount of information provided throughout a work is one of the most important aspects of writing. Providing too much exposition and your audience will get overwhelmed. Providing too little will leave them lost and confused. This show has always been an example of too little. The other issue is how much the supposed "good" has been just fluff that is used more as a cheap plot device than as a true way to build the world in a meaningful way. Look at each of those little phrases that sound neat until you actually translate them or look at what the author established. They don't do anything other than let the writers force the plot into the direction they want, which is bad writing. If your current idea doesn't work for the established world then you do something else. You don't change the world to fit your needs. So no, none of it has a single thing to do with a culture war and everything to do with good writing as well as a fundamental knowledge and respect for an established work by a previous author. You build off them not change what they spent a literal lifetime developing.

It is demonstratively terrible and unworthy of any sympathy as it was clearly written by people who did not care one iota about the original author's work, his intent, his world painstakingly crafted, or the legions of fans that supported his work for decades. It actively insults a viewers intelligence and dares you not to laugh at it's incompetence. The price tag for this fiasco only makes it more of a crime that no one has been fired for the end result now airing in the public sphere.

You forgot the most important part: why would you make a key to a lock that opens a dam if the specific purpose is flood and jumpstart a volcano, rather than 1) just activating the volcano but more importantly 2) while still needing trenches dug to do it? What if someone had just activated the lock? What would've happened then? The valley just overflowed? Why would there be a dark magic key necessary for this? What if the secret of the key was lost to time? Did they always plan to dig a trench? Was Adar there and given the specific instruction to dig a trench in a 1000 year from now so the volcano could be activated? Why wasn't it dug when the key was made if that's what the point of the key is, just in case Adar wasn't around to follow those instructions to the letter? The entire part of the trenches having to be dug is completely contradictory in regards to the key being created for this purpose at all. It's insane how stupid this is.

If they wanted history to rhyme they could have made the key something you drop into the volcano after a particularly heinous act is committed by it. The end of the one ring, was the destruction of hate and malice of Sauron by self sacrifice and love of kin and home. The Morgoth Key could have been used in a opposite way. to kill somthing innocent take its blood and use the hatred of that moment to be the dark magic that awakens the slumbering giant. Almost like the world itself is revotled by such an act. It would make more sense then an on and off switch to a lake.
