The best part is that the watchtower elves were captured off screen. They didn't think them getting captured would be worth showing in the episode. No grasp of storytelling potential.

I can already see it. It should have been done at night. It would have been shot like a Halloween film. It would have started with two elf’s on the tower passed the midnight hours, both complaining about the cold and lack of sleep. Suddenly the wind blows, sounds from the dark are heard. Sounds like screams and hate. Flash to other elf’s walking the camp now noticing some elf’s are not on their post. Doors opens with claws and dagger at hand. Our hero elf lays a sleep cloaked with Star light and then we see the darkness approach. Evil and demonic, cloaked in shadow and blight. Now the blade points at the elf’s neck, the demon prepares for the killing blow. And just when death comes, the elf’s awakes and draws dagger. See the scene from the return of the king when Aragorn awakes, now only with an actually close in battle between elves and orks at night. The ork screams and battle sounds are heard now. The attack begins. After a brave battle you then see our elf fall into a whole in the ground. And then you get the scene from the trailer. End scene.

The point of these shows is rather the individual characters as such & not their color, the source material is pardon the pun colored by its zeitgeist, so the current zeitgeist is much about representation, so practically you can cast any character, that would be otherwise white or whatever else into whatever, because the show is about a story between good & evil & not humanbeings´ racial composition, get your heads out of your ars, however the show is above average as a whole & A BLONDE WHITE WOMAN IS THE DAMN HERO OF THE SHOW, you should be livid!

This might be stupid but I’m so heart broken about what they did to Hobbits. I can not overstate the importance of Hobbits to LoTR. The way they love family and family history, how every member of the community is so highly *invested* in one another, their generosity, their loyalty, their unlikely courage. Hobbits are simultaneously the unremarkable Everyman and the greatest heroes in the world. The fact that the most awesome feats and dreadful dangers are told through the eyes of these humble home and food loving men is what makes LoTR so remarkable. I will argue that the best moment in LoTR is when Sam refuses to leave his friend behind and literally carries him on his back… and says he finds the burden light. To me this is what it’s all about. Why would they subvert/deconstruct the most important element??? Make it so ugly and twisted? I hate it so much. Literally making the Hobbits all *about* callously discarding their friend’s lives. (TLDR: How dare they say that Samwise “I can carry you.” Gamgee descended from these monsters.)

The Harfoots are not hobbits. There was an obscure reference somewhere by Tolkien that they existed (along with many other types of halflings) and Amazon just took it as a sign to make a whole new race that is apparently amazing at astronomy but they can't build carts for shit or have discovered agriculture. From the very start I chose to simply accept the fact that all things related to Harfoots is an invention of TV writers. "If TV writers knew how to write, they would be authors and not TV writers"

It's a symptom of the disease that has captured modern writers: they can't lift up their own characters without tearing other characters around them down. In this case, they can only make Nori seem kind and helping if they contrast her to the other Hobbits, who are portrayed as assholes. It's a shame, because that's a real character assassination, as your comment shows

There's an old middle grade fantasy book called "Dealing With Dragons" by Patricia C. Wrede, about a princess who doesn't want to be a princess and runs away to be a dragon's cook. But during the story, she ends up using the skills she was told a princess shouldn't learn, but also the ones she was forced to learn. This is Hobbit genocide in terms of storytelling. They took a group that was defined by love, tradition and community and completely made them into angry refugees you would see in a war or zombie movie. The Hobbits were key to the storytelling because they act like a benchmark for good and innocence for all the other characters in this world. You need such characters to guide the audience in things like morality in this universe.

  • @MajorSmurf

Ah yes this episode established many things. No 1: The elves watching the southlands must be blind as bats to not to see the several mile long trench the orcs were digging. No 2 : Elven warriors must be about as good as toddlers at fighting as every single elf we've seen has been captured by orcs. Finrod and his men were captured and killed. Galadriel warriors got their ass beat by a single troll. How exactly did they win the war again in this show? No 3 : Hobbits are psychopaths. We'll stay together but you even get a slight injury we'll leave you behind to die and laugh at your death. Btw if they also abandon others due to just being slow moving than they've abandoned a lot of pregnant woman :L . The writers seriously didn't think for a single moment. Of course if they did they would scrap everything and start again. No 4 : Galadriel is bloodthirsty. Like holy hell you would think a several thousand year old elf would at least be a little polite and understand basic diplomacy without going straight to the kill option.

It makes it seem that the elves didn't actually PATROL the Southlands, they just stood in their few towers, looking at whatever was in view, maybe fucking the locals. They also don't know jack shit about what's going on with Numenor. The elves seem very unobservant here. Wouldn't the Southlands also be where Galadriel spends all of her time? Where else would the orcs have gone if not into the mountains in the southeast, or beyond them, past the reach of the elves? The frozen-ass north with no meat, or into the ocean, or far south into the SUNNY DESERTS that I believe exist in Hurad?

It's obvious they want Galadriel to be the protagonist of this show. So why then they insist on making her so stupid? Seriously, not one decision she has made in these 3 episodes made any sense, she is alive thanks to nothing but plot armor. And the worst part is that she is incredibly arrogant despite this, like she is above everyone and always knows better. Are they trying to make us actively hate her? Is it a good idea to make your main character totally unlikable? Isn't there a class about this in Writing 101?

Just so everyone is aware, that wasn't a throwaway joke. Harvey was directly involved with the making of Peter Jackson's LotR movies (Miramax originally bought the rights before balking at the proposed budget before New Line Cinema stepped in) and had a contract to siphon off profit from The Hobbit movies even though he didn't do jack shit for them. Peter Jackson quickly learned to despise the man as he would originally greenlight something then turn around and get nasty screaming for changes. One time he threatened to fire Peter Jackson and have him replaced with Quentin Tarantino if Jackson wouldn't reduce everything into a single 2 hour movie. Weinstein also wanted to kill off most of the Hobbits and other "great" ideas. Tired of Harvey's bullshit, Jackson deliberately modeled that orc after the bastard as a petty jab.

He figures out the bullies have a badge. He uses his item (money) on an item (booze) uses booze to distract bullies to take the badge, then places it in his inventory. Meaning he was not only planning this when Morgoth was winning the war, he left a map of where to find his backup plan for his enemies to recover with thousands of years to figure it out.... For, uh, reasons. For this to be part of any plan, he'd have to know Galadriel was a moron who'd throw herself off a boat in the middle of the ocean and find some way to be in the perfect place for her to swim to.... Well, Amazon has to have jacked up the timeline, as we’ve got “stacy’s mom” vibes between Elrond and Galadriel, when she’s supposed to be married already, and we’ve got Èyowen/Aragorn vibes between her and halbrand. And we’ve got wimpy-Joan-of-Arc vibes from her in nearly every scene… she is thousands of years old, has spent many generations learning lore, fighting Sauron, saving middle-earth, building kingdoms, and so on, she shouldn’t be so ignorant of the world she lives in!!! Like, Amazon is gonna complain that we are “sexist” because we think their Galadriel is dumb, but Tolkien’s Galadriel is truly a bad-A!!! Did anyone in the creation of the show watch Cate Blanchett’s performance? She is a flippen Goddess, and her depiction of Galadriel is a goddess! Seemingly ageless as the elves were supposed to be, where she both seems young and old! How did Amazon miss that? Their Galadriel is wimpier than Rosie cotton, and she’s supposed to be very experienced, powerful and wise!!!

They messed with the wrong fandom. For me and many people I know Tolkiens books aren't just books, they're a part of who we are cause it's mostly the first entry to (high) fantasy. When I discovered Tolkien I was already all into Harry Potter, I loved it. But the love and comfort I feel when reading or watching LotR is special. This story really has my heart. So I literally felt heartbroken seeing the characters and world I love so much being destroyed for the sake of diversity, "modern" storytelling and a narcissistic identity crisis of the authors and "experts". But everytime I see how much people defend Tolkien I'm so proud and happy. Every single error is shown multiple times under every picture, video or text that talks positive about the show. Yea it's so insulting and wrong headed to approach Tolkien with the idea of 'fixing' and modernizing it. And the idea that various POCs need to see people that look like themselves to enjoy a show is contradicted by a centuries of people enjoying various stories from around the world. It's so shallow, and of course it's a standard that is only applied one direction - these activists aren't concerned with retelling stories from other cultures and 'modernizing' and diversifying them.

I think the reason why people feel such a deep connection to LOR is that Tolkien took great pains to ground it in realism as well as magic. As you read the book you travel with the fellowship. They eat apples, carrots, potatoes and the Shires are so resonant of the English countryside. There is familiarity as well as fantasy. And even the fantasy feels familiar as it taken from the mythology of a real people - the Anglo-Saxons and Nordic cultures.

Since they are going for the end of the Second Age with the Numenor stuff, Galadriel should be more like 5,000 years old at this point. I mean, she was a respected Noldorin lady in Valinor before the sun was created. She learned at the feet of Melian the Maia, Queen of Doriath. She rebuffed her Uncle Feanor (the greatest of all the Eldar) when he tried to get creepy and go all Daemon Targaryen on her. She's been married for millennia at this point and has an adult daughter. But yes, what we really needed was a scene where she gets the giddy little girl feels when she rides a horse. Because apparently in this version of Middle Earth, horse riding is an unexpected luxury rather than, you know, the way almost everyone travels over land.

All that needed to be done was to creatively weave things together. Instead, they change things here and there creating massive plot holes. ALL they have the rights to are the appendices, which is why they couldn’t give us a story based on any of those other titles. So they are trying to tell a story Tolkien never wrote, using merely the information and names contained in a handful of pages of his addendum notes while also trying to “fix” Tolkiens lore to better reflect the modern world and their own beliefs and agendas. Is it any wonder the damn thing is an abominable mess?

I’m reading through theAppendices now, having ignored it when I read the trilogy, and there is more than enough stuff in there to draw from, as well as enough blank spaces to create new characters/storylines.

If only for the sake of self-interest, since you might be the one who needs help tomorrow, it’d be a lot more sensible than a Pirate’s Code “He who falls behind is left behind” mentality. After all this is supposed to be a functional society, not a loosely connected band of marauders. The friend would have been adopted into another family, likely either one that was close to her own or whichever one was most able to handle an extra person. As for Nori’s injured father, he’d likely have volunteers to pull his cart while he recovered in it. Heck given the importance this group would’ve placed on pulling a cart, it’s possible the young unmarried men would actually *compete* for the opportunity to show off for perspective partners how good they were at providing for their future families.

It's actually the same as the SW sequels. Effectively just remake the original while destroying all forms of world building, lore and consistency. While also shitting on the Original Author/Director that is highly beloved by their fanbase.

I highly recommend watching these episodes with subtitles on. I know that they ruin the cinematic experience, but let's be honest, there is no cinematic experience here. I have the subtitles on because I'm watching the episodes when the rest of my house is asleep and I have the volume down low. The subtitles give you little bits of information that you would otherwise miss. For examples, it states that "Queen B" is actually a Queen Regent (regent meaning a stand-in queen while the real queen/king are absent). I'd have to watch the episode again, but I don't believe they ever state that. That is actually important to the story because then the audience can understand her royal position. The only time you get any hint of this towards the end when she says roughly "Father, the elf has come", but it's not clear if she is actually speaking to him or if she is just speaking to herself out loud (speaking to her "dead" father). I like @justsomeguy's analogy to bread crumbs, but I disagree a little. I think Amazon is placing tons of bread crumbs down for us, but they are spaced out, randomly arranged, lead to dead ends, and too frequent for an average audience member to understand what they are hearing. I'm sure all the episodes for the season are already shot and ready to go, but Amazon should just take an L on this one and move on.

How is it that, in four episodes, we have seen acres of dialogue in Old Valerian from House of the Dragon, but just a few lines of Elvish in Rings of Power? Just that alone (to me) shows how entirely disinterested Amazon really are about respecting Prof Tolkien’s works. and what meant so much to him.

Love your work. You said the barefoot ceremony is not a list of people they left behind, but people who died. I thought the same too until you close caption it and keep on listening. Wolf .. landslide … bees … he was sculpting … it is people they left behind!

It really bold of Amazon to make the first black Hobbit leader evil and having him setting up his own people to die in terrible accidents.

I remember being disappointed at the cinema when I went to see Harry Potter and the Half-blood prince. The two big reasons I went to see the movie (spoilers)...was to see the final interaction between Snape and Dumbledore, and Snape answering to Harry's taunt with "DON'T... CALL ME A COWARD!" We didn't get the second one, I felt that it was a lost opportunity that we will never have now, with Alan Rickman gone. Even though the scene was pretty good, I felt a bit empty and frustrated. Of course there is the fact that Harry went completely out of character during the scene in Dumbledore's office, he would have fought back 100% (in the books, Dumbledore casted a Petrificus Totalus spell on Harry). But now I kind of understand the level of frustration, disappointment and anger that hardcore LOTR fans must be feeling with this travesty, it must be orders of magnitude greater than what I felt. Characters murdered by script, timeline destroyed, entire mythical cultures humanized with really bad trails, and overall a big F*CK YOU to the lore and legacy of Tolkien. Sad times.

It's infuriating how many memories of Tom Riddle's backstory were cut for Teen romance...
