Rings of Power Episode 8 - Season 1 was boring and predictable. Galadriel unlikable.

#ringsofpower Season 1 ended up as a mediocre, boring, and predictable catastrophe. Galadriel is unlikable, harfoots appear evil, and Sauron seems to be the most cohesive character. There is so much wrong with the show, and yet it is the basics that suffered the most - dialogue, character development, and engagement with the audience.

    What went wrong? They destroyed the lore. Bad writers. Bad show runners. Bad Directors. Agendas. Politics. The better question is what went right, and the answer is nothing.

    They made Galadriel the villain and made you feel sorry for Sauron. She is the cause of the rise of Sauron for Christs sake. So the dark lord is like he is in the third age because he's a simp that was scorned by Galadriel. There aren't enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe how bad this show is.

    Halbrand was the best character, besides Adar, but I didn't like that he was Sauron. Sauron ought to just remain the Sauron we know from canon. King Halbrand was so interesting and could have become the eventual Witch King of Angmar. Total wasted opportunity.

    Too sad about Bronwyn and the Southland story. The concept of the good guys (the elves) essentially being an oppressive occupying force is an actual interesting idea. The speech in the first episode from Theo's friend (the blond guy) about how the villagers are prosecuted for things that happened a thousand years ago was the only thing that really piqued my interest. This difference in experience between the immortal elves and short-lived humans would have been interesting to explore and would also tie well in thematically with the (brewing) fall of Numenor. But alas, the show went for a CGI-fest with Arondir going all Marwell superhero and possibly the least convincing battle scene I have seen in quite a while.

    Indeed, there was so much to explore there and it all went downhill so fast. Now they are attempting to save this show by convincing the audience that season 2 will be better… doubtful. But at least the silver lining is how disappointing in this series has brought people together :)

    First I would agree by saying that Sauron is a more appealing protagonist than Galadriel. That is a serious problem and terrible writing. I would disagree about the Numenor CGI looking good. It is fine from a color scheme but the scale is off. The Numenoreans are a great seafaring warrior class people. The ports are not grand or large enough for a fleet of paper boats. But I agree overall with your assessment.

    why did sauron just admit who he was? she only knew he wasnt the king guy. he had the elves' trust and had infiltrated their royal family etc. he just admits to being sauron in an enemy city filled with soldiers, surrounded by enemies. its total crap. that alone is nonsense and would have destroyed the season even if it had been brilliant.

    What does work, and what was always missing in the Tolkien sagas, was Sauron's motivations. Now it is made clear, in episode 8, that he has learned that Morgoth's strategies were misguided. Sauron only wants to rule Middle Earth as a tyrant king, with the dark races as vassals and the orcs as slaves. He has no greater ambitions that than, which separates him out from Morgoth. Sauron is no mere lieutenant now; he is a master strategist.

    @@jeffagain7516 This was a debate I had in my writer's group long ago. The consensus was that Sauron's pure evil was the weakest-written of Tolkien's characters. I much prefer this Halbrand/Sauron, although it isn't clear to me why Galadriel didn't see through his disguise earlier.

    @@zincChameleon it's simplistic, yes. But this is a classic good vs evil story written by a catholic, and the nuance missing in sauron is found in other areas, like the valiant heroes efforts being all in vain without the goodness and faith of the little folk, the farmers, the everyday people with their everyday acts of kindness and friendship... this is a beautiful theme. Not all evil has to be relatable and nuanced...

  • @AcidAdventurer

    @AcidAdventurer

    @@doomsdaybooty1072 exactly! The vagueness and even, as you say, simplicity of Sauron is precisely why it works and is thoroughly necessary. Sauron is nothing more than the embodiment of pure evil. The nuance and complexity comes in how people deal with that evil, in how they resist or submit to it, and not from the evil embodied itself. The moment you give Sauron (or even orcs) some moral complexity or greyness, you've completely destroyed Tolkien's work. It might be a good story in its own right, but not in relation to the world they're supposed to be adapting. Giving Sauron such a story is ridiculous and seems to completely miss the entire broadstrokes of the trilogy.

    Indeed. I think I read somewhere that first, they paid 250 mln for the rights, and that the production budget was 465 mln which is like 58 mln per episode ( vs 20 mln per episode in House of Dragon. Basically, Rings of Power is failing because they could not prioritize in their budget ( or because they thought that the show is good as it is? which seems less likely). Overall, they took five years and loads of money to make a mediocre show and forgot to focus on script writing, direction and the actors as you said.

    If female representation was one of the main agenda, I wonder why the showrunners didn't show any female orcs.. I mean they had females in the lead position for almost all the races in Middle Earth(Elves, Numenoreans, Dwarves, Harfoots(whatever that's supposed to mean), and Men(as in humans who weren't elves, dwarves or numenoreans)).. Wonder why they didn't want to also show female orcs?? Was it because orcs are already despicable, to begin with.. Wait a minute.. So, was that the purpose, of all the strong female characters? To "gender-swap" the strong/likeable male characters, while retaining the ones that were already despicable to begin with? Why else would they miss out showing female orcs??

    Nobody asked for gore porn fantasies, merely a watchable show in the LOTR fantasy world.... but even that was too much to ask. So you get a Tumblr fan flick where the plot of the story is shipping the producer self-insert protagonist (talk about narcissism) with the 'misunderstood' villain and to get it into a bit of a Tolkien jacket they sound Shakespearian. 'The sea is always right', 'boats float because they look up to the shiny sky'.... oh something is definitely floating alright, it's not a boat, merely a turd. Ever wondered why the writers didn't get a script to a movie after 10 years of trying really hard? Well wonder no more.
