Min-maxing is not inherently a problem, but when it ruins the experience for others, that is another issue entirely. Combine that with serious metagaming, main character syndrome, and spotlight hogging, you have an RPG horror story for the ages.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

@@jpjfrey5673 a google search informed me Xanathar's guide has a rule which does affect armor and resting heavy and medium suffer less hit point recovery and no decrees in any levels of exhaustion if the character has any more searching revealed the quote from the book itself "Sleeping in Armor Sleeping in light armor has no adverse effect on the wearer, but sleeping in medium or heavy armor makes it difficult to recover fully during a long rest. When you finish a long rest during which you slept in medium or heavy armor, you regain only one quarter of your spent Hit Dice (minimum of one die). If you have any levels of exhaustion, the rest doesn’t reduce your exhaustion level." according to my search this should be on page 77, alas I cannot check how valid this info is as I do not own the book. and I guess since the book is not the core rule book, you could always ignore as it is an expansion to the game. I am not adverse or knowledgeable in these "darker dungeons rules" but looking around makes it seem like they are homebrew rules and not offically made by wizards of the coast. I could be wrong. So if the guy did sleep in armor he would not have exhaustion but he would heal less and need to spend more healing to get his full hp back every long rest.

That fall damage ruling was dumb af. Everything about that whole scene screamed bad dming in my book. Enemy is wearing heavy armor on a ship- what fool goes on a boat wearing heavy armor unless they have water breathing in some form? Enemy falls off ship, life boat magically appears under them (unless it was already there, but doubt it) - good job dm taking away any rewarding experience from having a creative solution, all to save a basic mob. High dex bard PC takes fall damage for purposely jumping down to the life boat when heavy armor wearing enemy falling on their back takes none?! - not just an inconsistent ruling, but a plainly terrible one with completely backwards logic that only serves to punish the player and benefit the enemy. The epitome of stupidity, and I would have told the dm just that. Then lastly, not letting the player rescind their action after finding out that you're going to rule fall damage in the most ass backwards way just to punish the player likely for outsmarting the encounter - love how taking away player agency is the cherry on top of this shit salad. DM vs Player style is a bad way of running the game unless it's what everyone signed up for, in which case the rulings still need to be fair and consistent.

Sometimes this can just happen. In my time DM'ing Ive made simmilar calls. Especially if theres a lot going on I could easily give damage to somthing that didnt earlier. These are of course accidental but in the intrest of keeping things moving forward id still keep whatever happend stand. If you tell me you jumped off then you did the second you said it. If he didnt take damage and you did there better be a reason. Thats the key to keeping the story moving In this case yes your on the boat and yes you took damage but id try to correct somthing like the enemy broke his leg and he had somthing nice on him. Yes i made a bad call and it took you out of the emersion but here take some gold and come back into the story. If it happens a lot then thats when you need to halt things and adress it. Ive had to retcon entire encounters because of failed mechanics. But one slip up with a boat really isnt that bad.

I’m thinking I’ll alter it so that he was the combat butler type instead, much like Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler (using the character as an example, not playing him.) • @MrSasukeSusanoo

    @MrSasukeSusanoo

    3 жыл бұрын

well you could've attacked so in game your characters knew what wasn't effective and sort out what was effective, and just use it, I don't know if you had fire magic or other means to make fire, but if you had, you could've done just that. I know that as a player you don't want to make things difficult for you, but if you don't do that sooner, then later, your characters won't know nothing of how to effectively combat, and will be utterly useless, and you'll have to force some metagaming to actually be able to fight, because you know how, but you didn't let the character learn it through the campaign because of your player knowledge, and that makes a weak character who will make roleplaying very difficult for you. So, just play fair as if it's your first time in D&D, just as your character without your player knowledge would, and all is fine. If someone gets triggered by you doing that, then they're not really good players, because they can't win without metagaming, and the game is about Role-play, not metagame, no matter how skilled of a player you are, your new character isn't, and you have to play just like that, you can make a strong build and justify it with your background or your intentions for your character's plot developement, but the rest and the most important thing depends on the roleplay, because with that, your character gains knowledge, experience, and you'll be able to use more of your player knowledge, to your advantage, without it being metagaming, because the character knows that too, making it legal

My current DM had to nip the whole looking up monster stats in the bud with our new game. We have a new player that kept asking "this monster should have x hit points right?" Or "why aren't they using multi attack when they have that skill?" My DM just came back with "They're a baby so they're not as smart or strong as the full adult monster". Then after the game she taught him about how DMs will modify monsters to fit the current level of the party so as to not just kill the party every time the DM wants to use a strong monster. I much prefer that to the game I was in with a different DM who would use the strongest attack on the weakest character every turn. I think adjusting levels or what attacks are used shows that the DM is more engaged with the players.

Every supposed "Powerful Build" will always have a counter somewhere. Munchkin, for example, would be utterly screwed fighting any dragon higher than a wyrmling. Blindsight negates the perks of his darkness, or the dragon could just fly out of reach and shower the area with their breath weapon.

I’ve done something similar to OP, in that I left after things built up. Though the problems all stemmed from my DM (and during a one shot I ran, from him and from another player). Difference is I never talked with my dm about leaving and what to do with my character, as the character I was playing at the moment was basically an npc the dm told me to Re-Class and play, rather than the idea I brought to him when I was retiring my first character (something that was only happening because I was constantly at odds with the party and the dm as the only Good aligned npcs, and more so, as the cleric.

So on the topic of Metagaming, I have played two campaigns before, using the same character where I was a passive PC, more or less there to help along new players. I play a werewolf monster hunter, sort of like a witcher. This allows the DM to have a way to give the players a hand in game without direct intervention on his part. In the case of my monster hunter I am always a few levels higher and mostly avoid combat (at my request, though the DM can ask me to intervene if he thinks the party is risking tpk). I avoid blatantly telling players things, while answering when directly asked (in character) about certain things. In one case during a session, the players couldn't figure out what the mysterious monster was, and after a few IRL hours of trying, finally asked my character, to which I told them they were dealing with some type of hydra (I forget exactly what it was) and on another occasion, when asked, gave them details about how to defeat a dracolitch. Imho, that is one of the few acceptable uses of metagaming

This is why I don't have fun with the folks I play Pathfinder with. Both players min max whatever character they play while I stick with standard set up. Nothing sucks the fun out of a game when the melee fighter (myself) receives max damage/get killed in almost every battle while the magic users (the other two players) always roll great numbers, delivering max damage even at level 1. (doesn't help they roll off of discord, so you never see if they're actually rolling the numbers they say they are - but the DM never questions it). Next time they want me to play, I'm going to insist that min maxing is thrown out the window and all rolls must be done on Discord to avoid cheating (because there is no way these other two players were rolling that good that often).

Good point, but based on the way OP described it, the loot was hands off after you paid in. I imagine the DM just asked each player individually how much gold they wanted to contribute. Then afterward, the DM would just tell them that the gold pile was used to pay for whatever they needed. OP only checked the amount when they were lower on funds. That’s when he realized no one else contributed.

For the "finding out about enemy monsters" since me an my players (we rotate who the dm is and the dm always has a pc of same level as the rest of us to have a 3 man party super small group ik) what we do before the dm says "roll for imitative" is we say "roll to see what you know about this thing" normally ether a flat INT roll or a nature / religion / arcana roll dm's call on wich. THEN depending on what each of the characters get he says what person X knows about this thing. then gives us a few in game seconds to "cliff notes" that info. never stats like str/dex/con ect ect hp or ac just resistances, vulnerabilities, usual languages (if it knows any) and abilities. that is the most we ever get even if we have a +10 in the called for roll and get a nat 20 for a 30 total. even if us as playeres have encountered that creature a dozen and a half times we have the "i as a player know X Y and Z about this nasty but what does my character know about it? lets find out"

But tbh my group is pretty good with this stuff and at most ask to roll knowledge checks to see if they know the necessary information. But I still surprise them sometimes. Last session they thought they were facing a regular giant snake (even though I described how diseased it looked), and were super shocker when the snake went into a rage-like status after falling below half hp, including becoming immune to charm and fear and gaining extra reactions for retaliatory attacks. That was fun.

"The DM isn't bad overall, even though he outright shat on OP during the whole boat debacle and yadda yadda." I'm in complete disagreement with you on this one Crispy. Anyone stupid enough to go "Yeah, you take fall damage but my npc enemy doesn't, lawl!" needs to be banned from DMing, that isn't just stupid it's ACTIVELY wrong. You are essentially punishing your player for making a good move by, FIRST OF ALL, giving the fucking enemy PLOT ARMOR and preventing them plunging to their death in the ocean by a MAGICAL lifeboat that I can almost guarantee was never mentioned before, and then dumping on them a SECOND time by refusing to acknowledge gravity for your enemy but nailing the player for it? Nah, I would have told them "That's not how gravity works, and if you argue with me on this you will not like how this discussion ends for you." "OH! And the other players only made a mistake by actively ignoring the suggestion of having a group money cache that everyone can use for necessities like traveling expenses." That isn't making a mistake, you are again failing to recognize people being actively malicious in their intent and actions. These people blatantly shafted OP by not donating a single copper to the party necessities fund, that's the kind of thing people got murdered for in those kinds of settings and you can bet that I would enjoy seeing to it that they died for it. "Oh, you were just a little too close and I couldn't help the placement of that Shatter, sucks hard man but you'll be alright just roll up a new character. What? Healing Word? What kind of Bard do you take me for? I'm a Hibachi Chef baby! Besides, I took Cure Wounds because it heals better. Yeah, I know it's touch, but I'm already a melee style Bard so why not?"

I have a legitimate question that I’m not sure if it would be considered meta-gaming and if it is would it be considered OK? An artificer item that is the equivalent of the DBZ Scouter The only thing it would really be able to do is figure out the HP of the current monster. (this would basically be a way for anybody using the item to know how much more it will take to kill whatever monster they’re fighting.) I’m trying to figure out if this would be an OK kind of item or if it would be too much it wouldn’t say anything else about the monster just how much health they have left.

Reading stat blocks might be frowned upon by most groups, it might even be against the "spirit" of the game, but it is NOT cheating. The knowledge absolutely is out there and publicly available, and especially for experienced DM even if they aren't looking up stat blocks, they may simply remember the stats from having run those monsters themselves. That kind of meta knowledge can be an entirely valid way to play. It's arguably not even that "meta", if one considers that heroic adventures who spend their time going around fighting monsters would have good reason to be well informed about the kinds of threats that exist in the world. HOWEVER... ...continuing to spout off numbers when the rest of the group has asked you to stop is just straight up rude.

I see how power gaming of the minority of the group can ruin the game because it makes it hard for the DM to balance the encounters (challenging the power gamers will ruin the fun for everybody else and normal encounters, for the majority of the group, will be cheesed by the power gamers making combat trivial and boring) In my opinion, however, this is something that should be discussed in session 0. If some players want to minmax because they want to try out an overpowered build they've come up with, while being able to support it with proper background and good rp, it is unfair to ruin their fun just cause the build is too op. Maybe the DM can crank up the difficulty and help all party members (with the help of the minmaxers as well) to come up with strong characters that also fit with their RP ideas or they can nerf some OP combos by adding rerstrictions or penalties on them when used. For example the darkness+devil's sight combo could give one level of exhaustion whenever used or make the character blind until they finish a long rest after, making it useable but not abusable. But that should be discussed beforehand, otherwise the player may accuse the DM for arbitrarily nerfing their character because the hate them or they are a bad DM that can't handle their awesome build smth. And if that's something that has to happen mid campaign they should discuss it with the player, before making any adjustments. And if some things the DM does not want to allow, like sorlock getting infinite spellslots, they should tell the players from the begining. Managing expectations is probably the most important thing in this kind of games.
