DM Plays Favorites and then Has a Meltdown when Criticised - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Playing favorites, whether it be for creepy love or a desire for more RP, is never a good idea. Here are two DMs that embody that principle.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

I don't get why crappy DMs get all prideful and smug when they make a DMPC super overpowered. It's like they think they've accomplished something "look I wrote a 50 on every stat in the sheet, I'm so skilled!"

You should sometimes have NPCs that over shadow the party, especially when the party is low level. Those NPCs should not be traveling with the party, however. My group are currently lev 3, about to hit 4 at our next sessions. They met the kingdom's high priest of Helm...Lev 20 life cleric. He VASTLY over shadows them in terms of power....but that's ok, because they have only talked to him 3 times for 10-20 minutes each time, so he isn't there long enough to steal the spotlight In Forgotten Realms, you character might meet Elminster, or the Blackstaff...they will be vastly over shadowed, but neither of those characters would trow on their pack and follow the PCs out the door to adventure.

I know why DMs make overpowered DMPCs - it can be super scary to have a NPC fail. If you make them tough, or put in some plot armor to keep them from dying/getting found out too fast, that's one thing. If you make them about PC or Below level, that can help get your "What if this character was played" out of your system - if they are temporary party members, or filling a role that the party lacks, or the party has decided that they like an NPC so much that they want to bring them along, that's fine. If you make them OP, no one else at the table thinks they are cool or special or fun.

First story reminds me of a game of Star Wars I was part off. We had a new player for the game, he decided that he would play the bodyguard of my own character, I was playing a force sensitive noble woman. The quest involved some big gala party or something, and that player just followed me around and refused to do anything every time the DM tried to get him more involved. Then he started complaining he was being ignored… So made me wonder if this guy is as innocent as he pretend to be. Maybe he is. But had bad experience like that…

I had a DM try to hit on me when I was already dating someone else who was my transportation to the game. My character was one that had come out of a campaign with serious emotional baggage, and DM tried to set her up with his DMPC, which had the effect of making her emotional baggage that much worse, while saddling her with a whole lot of responsibilities she wasn't ready for. During down time, other players and I would joke about how much DM was misjudging the situation and how desperate he was... My character went on to "resign" her official (in game) position and flee the entire toxic situation. I really liked that character, but not the downright s#17 she went through. She came out alright in the end.

First Story: One thing I'm picking up on that seems to be going over OP's head. The DM was a player in OP's previous group, which makes the OP being frozen out into two red flags instead of one. The DM friend is clearly taking his angst from OP's game out on him with DM's own game. He is inviting a friend to play, just to freeze him out. This is clearly retaliatory to something the OP doesn't remember or something the OP is simply leaving out. OP could be leaving those details out because actually went over OP's head and his DM friend never brought it up out of game. He merely retaliated in game. It's also possible he brought his DM over simply to get more of DM's group into his own group and worked to freeze the DM out as soon as the players he really wanted had either moved over to his group or confirmed that they wouldn't. Or to lay it all out in simpler terms, Had this been a friend he had never gamed with before, I would be most inclined to take OP at his word, but because this was someone he had already gamed with for years, this situation could only make sense in the context of an out of game problem that went unaddressed, and perhaps unnoticed by OP. OP was too dense to notice, and his friend was too passive aggressive to bring it up directly. Second Story: LOL! The DM did everything in his power to guarantee the girl ends up in the arms of brave meat head at the end of it. He basically took a heroic archetype played a player with a similar description and personality, and made him into the Underdog of the Story, right in front of his crush. Of course OP is the real MVP keeping his new friend's HP topped off, buffing the tank, just doing the teamwork s good team player does. Of course this is no surprise given that this is OP's telling of events. He was also basically being the perfect wingman for his new friend at that point. So was the DM, by engineering the situation that made the Fighter able to shine. I mean this was a person who had faced real adversity playing a character designed to face adversity, with the support of a decent party. DM never stood s chance to get the girl, but maybe he'll have the self awareness to realize he unintentionally played wingman, and be happy for that rather than just being as bitter and spiteful as he was at the time.

First story sounds a lot like the poster is self-biased. If they were actually playing with "friends", there is no reason they would just ignore the poster UNLESS the poster is actually meek and doesn't actually know how to speak up. It's a common thing when people don't understand how quiet they are and assume people can hear them when they genuinely cannot. I don't believe the GM "blew up" just because the poster communicated his feelings in a calm and concise way. This smacks of trying to make everyone else appear like the jerk when it's really the poster himself. This is provable by the way the poster never actually communicated with the other players when they seemed to "also" be "ignoring" him. Just the GM. This is also proven by how the poster pretends to be diplomatic at the very end by saying "I might have needed to be more engaged somehow" but that's not what he just got through saying. He said he "tried to assert [himself] in game," so was all that a lie? Probably. It's common to lie on the internet, and it's painfully obvious this "horror story" is just the poster trying to get others to validate him. A GMPC with 30 strength is pretty bullshit though.

1st story has me suspicious. I would like to hear the other side of the story. Could be DM ignored them, could also be they were the quitest player and expected every one else to give them time to shine instead of engaging with the story as it came up. Hard to say but at the very least the DM and party did not really sound malicious.
