Insane D&D Edgelord Hates Roleplay and Ruins Fun (Part 1) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

This might be the worst edgelord to ever grace the tavern. Get ready ladies and gentlemen, this is going to be a doozy.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

    Hey, you should probably be aware that G*psy is a racial slur! OP probably meant Roma (if ethnicity), or Traveller (if talking about a traveller group other than Roma descent). This isn't very widely known in the U.S., so not faulting you for not knowing it, but you might wanna consider editing the word out if it comes up again as you would casual use of any other racial slurs.

    When I first read this story, I nicknamed Larry’s character “Darth Syphilis”. This was for a couple reasons: 1. He has the personality of a venereal disease. 2. He acts like a Sith Lord, trying to sway others to the Dark Side of D&D. 3. His character description reeks of Sith Lord, with black on black and even a mask, and being overly eager to kill something. 4. I like Robot Chicken.

    I can say I would never want to play with Larry, he sounds worse than anyone I've ever encountered. Also I have to disagree with your take on the no killing part, the way they are doing it sounds like they are still helping with combat, and 5e's rules for nonviolent goes something like "a player can choose to deal nonlethal dmg with a melee attack, if a target takes nonlethal dmg and hits 0 hp then they are unconscious and stable" That's it, it doesn't make the fight any harder, it doesn't take away exp, nor interfere with the others play style, it's purely for roleplay and is super easy to do. There could be rp reasons not to, but nothing mechanically that I can see, and as an adventure league game it really should be set up to allow rp to happen so less reason to punish it, making the complaints about 'getting less kills' pointless

  • @Redtail45044

    @Redtail45044

    3 жыл бұрын

    Because there are RPG-games that happen to have it as the easiest method, and I'm not talking ones like D&D. (Pretty sure there's a couple like VoM-Vampires of the Masquerade-that are easier that way too.) Also, look at a lot of RPG video games that want you to kill everything that moves, or further that by allowing you to kill NPCs, like the Morrowind Series. Sure, the games are fun but they allow for some horrible influences when it comes to D&D. ...That, and some people just want to kill everything that moves as a way to release stress, and don't care what the others want to do.

  • @aurora5481

    If you walk into a game with the expectation that it's like an RPG but more free, the way D&D, especially experience-wise, is built will read like encouragement to do so. The way you 'win' is by killing a lot of things and stealing their stuff. All you need is your first group to reward that behaviour, actively or by putting up with it, and that mindset will be set for life.

    To be fair, the game gives players experience points for killing creatures and nothing else. I know there is now milestone experience built into 5e, but any dnd game before that had no such thing. If the game were set up to reward players mechanically for role play we would probably see a lot less of the murder hobo kind of behavior.

  • @aurora5481

    @aurora5481

    @@IsaacDeJong Technically, you get experience for overcoming encounters. It doesn't require you to kill them. A DM who understands that should give you experience for cleverly bypassing a troll encounter or allowing yourself to be arrested and solving the legal scuffle in court with good charisma rolls just as much as they'd give for fighting it out. That said... milestone all the way. The one good session I've ever gotten from XP came from a misunderstanding of the rules. (A cleric levelling up mid-combat, saving the party with a 3rd level spell after having already spent all of his other spell slots, narrated _beautifully_ as him pushing a step closer towards his god and finding himself not burning for it, now stronger and able to find that gift within himself. Needless to say, we were all pretty fucking bummed when we realised it wasn't gonna happen again.)

Well, she wasn't strictly opposed to violence or even outright killing enemies in the heat of battle, she just had very limited offensive abilities. She did know how to wield a long spear, and although her attack bonus was nearly non-existent, she would still flank and use the aid action to assist her more combat capable allies in between rounds when her highly specialized spell casting wasn't needed.

    True, although in these situations the DM should also bear some responsibility for allowing the action. A pet should be considered an extension of the character, attacking it is the same as attacking them and a DM should absolutely be within their authority to disallow non-consensual PVP. Admittedly, this isn't something I was always great at myself back when I DM'd, but I'd like to think I've learned from those mistakes.

    Nothing is wrong with min-maxing, some people want to have a strong character and sometimes the party even needs that hard carry. The problem comes when people don't make good characters to come along with that. Yea you're a God at combat but what about the roleplay of that character. At my table, if someone is a God at combat and I recognize this, instead of punishing that player or posting about them I pull them aside and say "hey, you did it, you won this game, you beat it. I don't think you will have fun at this table unless you roleplay" sometimes they stay and become a great role player, sometimes they leave the table. But ultimately the problem is dealt with.

    Personally, if I were the GM here, while I would have taken a dim view of the problem player's fairly overt bigotry ("all g****s are thieves" is pretty blatant; I wouldn't fault someone for simply saying the word, at least not unless there was an open Romani in the room), I would also have flatly denied the OP's choice to name her character "Mii", simply because it would be too confusing to hear players constantly saying things like "give the item to me" and not knowing whether they meant themself or the half-elven monk. It's bugging the crap out of me (or possibly out of Mii) to keep hearing this confusion during Crispy's reading.

    Oh, I heard this story before... Seems like OP just sent it out to few channels reading rpgHorrorStories.

    Fun fact. Most Romani people don't mind the word "Gypsy" if used appropriately. I've met a few and they are proud of the word because they are toughened by their history.

    I think it also differs from place to place. In America, there isn't really much of a hatred against the Roma, so "Gypsy" could be more okay. Europe, however, had a really bad problem with anti-Roma racism, so there "Gypsy" absolutely is a slur

    This is why I'll play a lawful evil character next. That way, I can ask to kill a problem player's character so we don't have to deal with his shit.

    Some of the story reads as a "that happened" kind of recollection. Tbh at alot of it makes the op sounds a bit like a "that player" trying to be the MC all the time. Larry totally sucks period. The OP just sounds almost equally insufferable as a "look at me all my characters are so unique and cool and I totally RP the best and win everything with my RP skills" Will probably get hate for this comment but yeah lmao. Not calling OP a problem player at all, just was listening to this with someone who is really new to DnD and they even brought up like "OP kinda sounds like a spotlight hog right?" Larry is totally the problem player period, just also not sure if its just how the story is written or what but OP also rubbed me the wrong way.

    OP is cringe af. Role-playing the whole "charcoal drawing in the bag" gave me secondhand embarrassment

    I'm sort of on the line regarding this story, it seems to be making the rounds. On one hand it's fine if you want to take it at face value and go for the "That Guy gets what he deserves and bullied OP gets the chance to shine and show him up" narrative. On the other hand I feel like the DM could have given the problem player a few ways to still participate in the big event of the campaign.
