I mean, seriously, he sounds like my antagonist OCs I tend to draw (No, I don't have a Deviantart, shoo!), some of them just being too eager to be huge bastards. I don't even think Mike had any ounces of sympathy towards OP, since he seems completely ready to cripple him, get him insulted, and have him face a humiliating execution. The fact that OP's friends didn't even move a finger at this is just beyond me. It HAS to be a made up story, otherwise that would mean that OP's friends are just Mike's other personas or something. I mean, is he even talking about the same friends anyways?

I'd bet this is the case more often than people think. Sometimes I try to coax the shy players out of their shells with light interactions regarding things occurring in game. Whenever there's a nibble at an interaction, I'll focus on the things that grab their excitement and get them talking in character. (It's a little trick my mom uses to help shy kids to come out of their shell.)

Based on his reactions and comments to the roleplaying I surmise this Mike character didn't like the RP for the following reasons; 1. They only really like the combat aspect of the game, which is fair since D&D is 80% focused on combat. But anything that doesn't let them test broken combat builds is really boring for this player and they hate sitting through it. 2. This Mike character seems to be very selfish and loves being in the spotlight. This is most obvious in how his DMPCs are OP and take the limelight. But it's also apparent in the following items: his dismissive/hostile attitude towards others, the fact he owns the server, the fact he caused the group to form in the first place and how railroaded his encounter solutions were. 3. The roleplay probably made him feel uncomfortable. He did make the comment on how the OP was being "melodramatic" with their naming. From OP's perspective it's harmless fun. From Mike's perspective it's pure cringe. Sitting through poorly voice acted scenes from amateur actors was probably as grating as watching cringy anime/cartoons for him. Now with that being said, I don't ever think it's appropriate to be a big baby about it, but it's worth trying to see things from the other perspective.

Normal people don't cheerfully sing about how they're bullying someone, try to force people into a role that doesn't challenge their sense of importance, and take sheer delight in it. Also, I think you're making an interesting assumption that the players' RP is "poorly voice acted scenes" and cringe.

Mike is a schoolyard bully that never grew up. I can't guarantee I wouldn't have told him about himself. This is malicious targeting of a player because he didn't play the way he wanted. I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to accept "That's just the way he is" as a valid rationale for how someone acts. It's an excuse that can be used to hand wave literally anything and it only serves to stop a conversation about someone's toxic behaviour. People should be confronted and held accountable for acting self-important and childish. They shouldn't be coddled with the idea that there are no social repercussions for treating other people in a way you would never tolerate yourself. Otherwise, the person in question will always remain a man-child.

I'm seriously glad my first dive into ttrpg's was a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game of a friend who helped me learn to play the role of my character rather than just roll dice. Edit: the whole thing with the "Roll" and "Role" was something said friend used to help get new players in the group to understand that the game wasn't about just rolling dice. His exact words were, "It's role playing, not roll playing." All the while making gestures to highlight the difference.

I’ve been in this spot before where the DM was hulk-smash levels of green monster jealous because I’d produced a detailed character for their supposedly RP-centered game. (Was the oldest and most experienced of the group) DM went out of their way to target and bully my cleric in what turned out to be a TON of combat amid sparse RP for 5 sessions. Then even pulled the bit where I got separated from the group by “closing door trap” aka Indiana Jones movies. And then jumped by five monsters that were the WORST matchup for a robe wearing heal specialist. I went the opposite way from video’s OP, though. Cleric just knelt down and prayed to his deity… and died. Whole group was like, “why didn’t you fight?” And I just shook everyone’s hands and went off without a word. Game ended that session with full party wipe because the DM ganked their healer for being an involved player.

Seed More as the late, great Gorilla Monsoon used to say on WWF television “Turn about is fair play.” I think OP should have volunteered to DM a series of adventures and give “Mike” a taste of his own medicine. Start handing out bonus XP for role playing. “Oh, what’s wrong Mike? Are you falling behind because you refuse to role play with everyone else? That’s too bad. Sad day for you.” Have every combat encounter be a little tougher for him than everyone else. Everyone else’s opponents are wearing leather armour, but Mike’s “just happen” to be wearing full plate. Everyone else faces only three opponents, but Mike is completely surrounded by six. And oh look! Whenever you roll a critical hit, it “just happens” to be one of Mike’s opponents that made the roll. Oh! And did I mention that I’m using the Critical Effects Table from the 2nd Edition AD&D book Combat & Tactics? Some of those effects are permanently crippling, and even lethal. Give Mike plenty of powerful enemies that he has no chance of ever defeating (at least not without somehow surviving to 20th level and gaining a shitload of magic items), Have monsters single him out constantly (like maybe an entire grove of Redneck Trees have taken a really strong liking to Mike for some reason, and are very intent on hearing him squeal like a pig). There are just so many ways Mike can be shown just how it feels to be on the receiving end of being bullied. Trust me Mike. You do NOT want me as your enemy.

I can see sticking around for a long time, out of sheer curiosity, to see just how bad a person can get, but ONLY if I can maintain detachment from the character, and view the whole thing as a sort of sociology experiment. If I could "watch" while "participating," and taking notes to make sure I get all the details just right, I could stick around for quite a while. But, if I was not detached and only sticking around for curiosity, I would have broken for another game, or no game at all, WAAAAY sooner. "Bully the warlock!" should never be sung by the DM who is cackling while he tortures and tries to kill your character, and as soon as he TRIED to claim innocence, OP should have sung "Bully the warlock!" right back at him, and ask him how that could POSSIBLY be an accident. Also, the "roll the dice to see if he kills himself right here and now over all this garbage" was good, and it worked. For a hot minute. And then, Mike and all his friends were in denial again. At that last game, where the final straw happened, I wouldn't have played the session to allow him to save face. I personally think that OP should have got a copy or two of the Bauldur's Gate module and then talked in private with just other DM and show him that Mike is lying and being this way on purpose - even if there was a risk that the group could fall apart. Mike's actions needed to be addressed sooner. I digress, this is something that would be obvious in hindsight, so I don't fault OP for how he handled it. Of course, I was young and edgy at the time, playing solitary characters (Rogue thieves, UA Wizards, and Orc Bards), and had no idea how to do backstory stuff; but I was fresh out of theater class and could improv very well. I agree this guy acts very similar to one of the DMs I played under, definitely a man-child. Hope y'all have a good day.

Two of the player loved heavy combat and the rest plus me like heavy RP. While on one hand I can respect him for trying to anylze the OP's wording to figure out their true feelings on the problem being discussed, but on the other hand I find that he seems to reaching for things that arent even there with some of his criticism. And in my opinion the story felt like a group of players in unknown waters on how to properly confront a problem they are not equiped for, but Den says they're being awful for having a problem with the couples baby, and makes a low hanging furit joke a Chris-chan in the process. I very much dislike this binary people have created between roleplay and combat. A few years of Pathfinder, a game practically designed around munchkins, has shown me that both can be mixed competently. My most powerful character to date was simply nicknamed Frank. Primarily because he was a Trox and his real name was just me making the most obnoxious sound I could think of then saying "But you can call me Frank" and then never saying his actual name again. A joke I admit was only as funny as it was while within my close friend group, I wouldn't recommend doing that in any group you don't know well. Since I was bringing him in at level 12 to replace my last character I took the liberty of describing how exactly he came to be an escaped slave that found his way to the surface world after escaping his Duergar slave masters, and how that lonesome bugman came to be a Hell Knight of the Order Godclaw. That backstory was chunky by the time I was done. The Order Godclaw is, as most Hell Knight orders are, exceedingly law focused. But I took that to another level... kinda. The Order Godclaw specifically take their tennets, practices, and a lot of their rules from the five major lawful deities of Golarion. Specifically those of Man and Dwarf. The secondary alignment and beliefs of the Gods are meaningless to the order as they hail the God's and Goddess's lawful edicts above all but their direct orders from Cheliax. A portion of Frank's backstory included the natural lust for knowledge that gripped him in his newfound freedom, and how that lust lead him to books of law, and how those books of law tied into him becoming an actual Lawyer as a part time profession. He had Profession: Barrister and demanded his name and title be accompanied by "Esquire" since he didn't escape enslavement at the ripe age of 7 and then become a barrister and Hell Knight before the age of 12 just to have adventurers forget his place in society. He was not the only Hell Knight in the party. Indeed the party were scouted by the senior ranking officer as powerful prospects for the Order Godclaw. When my character died our excuse for Frank showing up was a message scroll and the senior officer asking for 'tanky reinforcements', and tank Frank was/is. Imagine with me a 15ft tall insectoid monstrous humanoid with two large arms and four abdominal arms. Yes Trox are technically arachnids. This tall ass bug man is wearing full plate armor, is wielding a tower shield in his abdominal arms, and is dual wielding morningstars, the holy weapon of Asmodeus whom Frank venerated more than most Gods. On top of all this he is wearing enchanted pauldrons and enchanted boots. His boots grant him haste, his pauldrons will increase his size category by one step functionally at will. This 15ft tall insectoid battle tank can be 30ft tall at will and fast while doing it. When our quest inevitably dragged the party into troop combat Frank dominated in a way even I hadn't anticipated while making him. I had given him the feat "Dreadful Carnage". The wording of this feat is loose and only states you get a free intimidate check for every enemy you drop to zero hit points or less in a single round of combat. This is important because I did the math (using Pathfinder's RAW square-cubed law) and the GM decided Frank's weight while Huge sized was significant enough to crush the low level warriors used to bolster armies, and do so instantly. Frank would charge through enemy lines, his AC high enough to ignore their weapons, his feet heavy enough and his movement distance far enough to crush nearly a hundred soldiers every move action, and then end his turn with nearly a hundred intimidate checks all at once. God-fucking-zilla. He wasn't even the strongest member of the party, and that wasn't even his final form. Yet despite how absolutely fucking broken this character was in combat. Despite an AC well into the thirties with a strength score to match. I found time to roleplay a LOT. I roleplayed so much with Frank that I, with help from the Rogue, just about derailed entire sessions. The Rogue wanted a bank account in a Chelish bank. But he knew Cheliax too well to trust they wouldn't fuck him on a deal. So he came to Frank and officially hired him as his own personal lawyer. Accompanying the Rogue Frank would get contracts signed stipulating the Rogue would get all benefits and no downsides from the bank, but I ripped him off the smallest bit by stipulating Frank would get 10% of all of the Rogue's earnings. This was hidden as a restatement of the previous payment stipulation. The Rogue couldn't afford Frank's services upfront and so they worked out a deal. 10% of the inheritance the Rogue left for his family in the bank account would pay for Frank's continued services as the Rogue's barrister.

First off, HOLY WALL OF TEXT BATMAN!!! Which is also a warning for what's coming ahead. Secondly, it takes some astounding talent to find the right balance of combat and role playing that keeps everyone excited to continue. My friend who kind of got stuck as a perma Storyteller, World of Darkness version of the DM, worked hard to find that balance with every story he did. One such story, he only ran with two players, myself and on other, after character creation, he sat down and talked to each of us and asked us what our character's goals were. I was running a rare Lupus Bone Gnawer, Werewolf: The Apocalypse was the game and Bone Gnawers were one of two tribes that had their Lupus almost literally extinct, which I told him that my character just wanted to be in a position of respect and be respected. With our goals and how crazy simple I made my character, he had a very hard time finding that balance. He later described my character's interactions with NPC's as spokes on the wheel of a bicycle. Any NPC my Lupus didn't like he avoided and any he did he continued to interact with. This somehow caused me to not take a liking to a BBEG that was supposed to befriend us.

Part 2/2 Continued from my previous comment ... The shop keeper was a throw-away NPC, without much relevance to the plot or the PCs. But there was a very powerful, reoccurring NPC who was an ancient Silver Dragon, the last of her kind, who usually appeared as a beautiful elven female when she met with the party. She was one of the most powerful and oldest character in the world, one of the only people, besides the gods, who’d lived through the apocalypse. And the GM had defiantly established her as a good guy. She’d sheltered and saved a whole town of survivors, and she fought an epic fight against a bag guy, where the party basically was relegated to cheerleading and minion mopping, while Silver Dragon and the a a big scary bad guy duked it out epically in the skies above (yes, NPCs taking the spotlight was another issue I had with GM’s style, but it’s not the focus of this story). Silver Dragon had sacrificed herself to save the town and then GM had set it up where we could permanently sacrifice points from our character stats to bring her back… We did it, because we were playing heroes and the scenario was set up for it to be the obviously heroic thing to do. All this to say, she was an NPC we’d had to invested a lot in and that GM obviously thought was really cool and awesome. Now, as a she was a survivor of the apocalypse, Syme had been anxious to know what Silver Dragon could tell him about what had caused it and the lost cultures and histories that had existed before the apocalypse. As usual, she was cagy and had nothing too useful to say. But she did tell us she had a book of saved histories and spells. Syme asked if he could see it, but she said it was too precious to be trusted to adventures, and that it was in Draconic, a sacred language of her people. She did say, however, that if we finished a certain long term goal of the plot, she would allow Syme to read the book. I was cool with that. It was at least something to engage my personal character goals with, even if it was locked behind a bunch of other plot stuff. I had Syme learn Draconic during traveling downtime on the ship - there was a lot of that in this story, - specifically so he could read that book, once Silver Dragon finally let him see it. Fast forward many months and many levels and we finally achieve the plot points that Silver Dragon had said were necessary. The party goes back to Silver Dragon’s town and most of the party goes to the tavern to celebrate with the locals. Syme, however, immediately goes to see Silver Dragon, excited to finally get access to this book of lost histories he’s been seeking for most of the game. Syme’s there alone, and Silver Dragon comes down in her elven form, carrying the book. However, before giving Syme the book, she says there’s more she needs from him. … You guessed it. She wanted Syme to father her child for her. Now, I wasn’t so caught off guard this time. I was surprised and very annoyed that GM was actually going there again, especially with an NPC he very explicitly had presented as a good guy, but he’d done it before, so I wasn’t nearly as flustered. I had Syme ask if she was serious, and if this really was the only way she’d give Syme the book. GM stuck to it, having Silver Dragon confirm she would only give him the book, if Syme slept with her and conceived a child for her. In response, Syme said there was nothing in the world for which he’d give up his first born child, and that he had no interest in sleeping with her. He then added that he was disappointed in her for taking back her promise that she’d made months ago to give him the book, simply because he refused to sleep with her and then give her their child. He then left to go back to the tavern with his friends. The rest of the group let me role-play out Syme’s response, but barely. As soon as the scene cut happened, Mother-of-the-Group jumped out of her chair, yelling at GM. - Man was she pissed. - The GM back peddled again and Syme did get access to the book without needing to sleep with Silver Dragon, but, by this point of game, I was pretty checked out as far as the NPCs and plot were concerned. I stuck with the game to the end, but only for the PC relationships and role-play, and also because, as I mentioned at the beginning of the story, these were friendships and relationships I had to protect, and telling the GM I thought his NPCs and plot were bad would have burned bridges. He’d demonstrated a number of times that he didn’t take criticism well, especially from me. At and earlier point in the game, he’d refused to run for like three weeks, because a number of players had said a riddle he’d included in one of the puzzles was dumb and sexist. And he had told me directly that he didn’t want me to give him feedback on the game, because he didn’t trust me to give criticism sensitively enough. - I guess he was at least self-aware about how badly he took criticism. He basically would only listen to my husband, who worked in customer service and was a master at delicately dealing with difficult social interactions. My husband was also the oldest member of the group, which I think contributed to the fact that GM was willing to take advise from him, but no one else. So, I appreciated what I could about the game and just endured the rest of it. Frankly, I think a lot of us were glad when that game finally ended. After that, I still played in games with GM where he was a player, but avoided getting into anything where he was the game master. Final thoughts Honestly, I’m not super sensitive, nor easily triggered, and if GM had introduced this as VILLAINOUS behavior, I probably would have been okay with it. Men dealing with female predators is something that often gets ignored or waved off as not real or serious, and if it had been treated seriously and presented in a mature and responsible manner, I think it could have been a worthy story beat for the party to deal with. But GM obviously didn’t get why it was BAD, since he had a character he considered super-cool and heroic be the predator, which was what made it disturbing to me and the rest of our table. Also, why would he think Syme would just bargain away his children? Sexual predator vibes aside, it really bothered me that GM seemed the think men should have no interest or investment in their children, once the act of conception was over and done with. Maybe, I don’t have the best perspective on all this, but I was actually more upset that the NPCs wanted to deny Syme any right to be a parent afterward, than that they were withholding favors to get sex. Some people make a living exchanging sex for other things, and if its consenting, healthy and fair, that’s their business. People can use their bodies how the wish, as long as no one gets hurt. But trading away children, - even if they are unborn- grossed me out.

Yeah, when someone else is a total prick, then it's fine, because that's just how they are, but when I try to bite back that's "Wrong". People - Never let yourself be told by others you're in the wrong. You have to grow wisdom to see that you were in the wrong and admit to it. Otherwise, people will try to manipulate you into feeling guilty for not lying under their feet while they're walking.

I disagree on one thing. Not everyone has the privilege to just "find another group". Sometimes you have one group in your area, two if you are lucky. And honestly I think being immovable on style is childish. Especially if the players are friends. And I always try to make friends with anyone I play with. If a player says "'hey, I've been loving the RP but could you add a few more combats too? I'd love to try out X abilities " or, "hey the combats are super fun and it really makes the game feel like there isn't alot of time to solve current issue at hand, but I would like a little more time to RP between characters". Saying "sorry just find another group" is pretty selfish and immature. Especially as a GM. Your job is to make sure everyone at the table is having fun not just you and another person. If that means changing just a little bit. Sorry. You should. You can find fun in both styles. Sorry, it just irks me when I hear people say "well in that case leave".

There is something wrong with how Mike plays. Is there anything wrong with being combat oriented as a player inherently? No. Is there something wrong with coming to another DM's table, with that playstyle, and having the gall to tell them to "get on with it already" when it comes to how they run their own game? Yes. Is there something wrong with having that playstyle as a DM when it results in forcing a player into an inescapable situation so you can bolster your own itty bitty, fragile, wounded ego? Yes. Am I incredibly mad at the Mike story? Abso-fucking-lutely Robbing player agency to make himself feel better about his DMPCs damage output? Trying to exert his will over another DM while playing AT HIS damn *virtual) table? It's got my blood pressure up big time

There's a bit of nuance you seem to miss on that last story. Mike was, until now (time of the story) THE DM for that group. This would strongly indicate none of them were really "roleplaying" very much as he ran combat intensive campaigns. The other DM also started pretty combat heavy but slowly shifted more towards RP. Mike's DM style wasn't so much "DM vs player" as it was "DM vs OP." The reason was because Mike was smart enough to see what was happening. He didn't necessarily target OP because he didn't like him, it may not have been personal at all, though it probably was. Mike's problem was HIS D&D group that he's played with for years would grow more and more unsatisfied with his DM and play style as the leaned more towards RP. Basically, from Mike's point of view, OP was corrupting HIS players. As a side note, that would also explain OP's claim of average characters being seen as such wonderful RP by the group. It came across more like a poor attempt at humble bragging, but to a group of players that didn't really RP much, even just ok roleplaying would seem really good.

because people often aren't very good at it. it's one thing to watch professional voice actors RP in CR, who spend A LOT of time thinking about character nuance, backstory, interactions etc and planning things out for truly interesting narratives or story arcs. it's another to have a random neckbeard try to channel his inner "uwu anime girl" and shriek in falsetto every time he says something, complete with voice cracks like a pimply-faced teenager. it also gets kinda old when most "RPers" are only able to "act out" caricatures of the typical tropes - the "innocent" 10-year old prodigy spellslinger with a tragic past the edgy brooding rogue with a tragic past the "i want to fuck anything with a pulse" bard with a tragic past the holy warrior with a heart of gold and a tragic past the cocky elf from high society with a tragic past the idiot "hurhurdurdur" barbarian mouth-drooler with a tragic past and strangely enough, they're often all just played the same, just with different silly accents or voices. it's an absolute cringe-fest.

Part 1/2 I don't know if you accept stories given in comment sections, but I'm not on Redit and after bingeing a bunch of your videos and really enjoying them, I wanted to submit a RPG-Horror story for you to consider reading later. This happened years ago and I'm no longer part of the group and relationships involved here, though most of the players are still my friends. The NPCs keep trying to make my character be their baby-daddy This is my first time submitting anything like this and I’d like to preference this by saying that, for the most part, I had good experiences with D&D and this group, though I never really got along with GM’s style as either a Game Master or a player. Outside of the game, he was a pretty good guy, but we just never had very similar perspectives on things, especially when it came to characters. Nonetheless, everyone at the table was close friends. We were a group of siblings, spouses, roommates and besties, so, ultimately, in this case, relationships were more important than having the best possible game. There was me, my husband, his sister, (who was the protective "Mother-of-the-Group", both in and out of character,) her wife, two of our best friends, and GM was both a good friend and also roommates with my husband and I. We were a large group, pretty equally mixed men and women and all around the same ages of mid-20s to early-30s. GM was male and running a home-brew setting, with a lot of custom religion, history and races. I’m female, but my character was a male Aasimar noble, named Syme, who I really enjoyed playing, despite/because of his Aasimar vanity and mercantile noble’s ambition. The rest of the characters don’t really become too relevant in this story, but they were all very good and interesting characters, and ultimately the RP with the other PCs was what got me through this long levels 1-20 home-brewed campaign. Our party was a group of divinely selected champions gathered from across an archipelago of racially segregated islands to explore the supposed ruins of a central continent, where, several hundred years ago, an apocalypse had nearly destroyed the world and killed most of the gods. The reason and history of this apocalypse were unknown, lost, - along with all previous history and culture, - in the post apocalypse chaos. The various islands had only recently discovered one another, after the few surviving gods each took their favorite race and hid them away on an island right after the apocalypse. Now, three hundred years later, there was a problem. Because there weren’t enough gods to properly balance and manage the magical forces of the world, the fabric of the universe was about to dissolve - or something to that effect. In the face of this, the gods had finally decided to do something and put together a party of champions to go back to the old continent and find a bunch of scattered NPC survivors still living there and fetch artifacts for them in order to empower them to become new gods. Syme was a cleric of light, but he viewed it very much as a Light =Truth and he was mostly after knowledge. His family had been pioneers on his island in ship building, invention and discovery and his parents had been lost years ago, when a previous expedition had tried to return to the lost continent, but never returned. In short, Syme saw this exploration as part of his family legacy and very much wanted to learn the truth of the lost histories, cultures, magic and religions. He carried around several volumes of journals everywhere, carefully recording everything and often asking questions of the gods, or anyone else who seemed to know anything about the mysteries of the setting. He was a plucky, investigative reporter, ready to do whatever it took to uncover the secrets of the gods and save civilization. Unfortunately, GM didn’t really give me much to do in this regard. The gods were constantly cagey, telling us nothing, or else they’d just explain everything and not leave much to be figured out by the players. I found it a little annoying, but it wasn’t a big deal. I understand that running good mysteries is hard, and when it became clear that GM just wasn’t interested in running mystery, I tried not to take too much time with it. I still played Syme as constantly making notes, keeping records and asking questions, but was willing to hand-wave playing it out at the table and just say, “Syme will spend half the day interviewing locals and investigating town records,” whenever there was some downtime. The other PCs were pretty supportive, often helping Syme with his collecting of first hand accounts, local oral traditions and old writings. But it become more of a character personality aspect, and a fun side thing that we’d fit in when it wouldn’t interfere with the main plot. All that to say, it was well known that gathering lost knowledge was a powerful personal motive and goal for Syme So, I was the party cleric and, while we also had a druid and a paladin with some healing abilities, Syme was the only character with access to the resurrection spells, like Revivify and Raise Dead ect. (technically the paladin could get them eventually, but, as a half caster, he was a good few levels behind my cleric in getting these spells.) We were chosen champions of the gods and had been told we needed to succeed in our quest to keep the world from ending, so the party was pretty anxious to have these spells as an insurance against possible character death. We level up, and I get access to Raise Dead and everyone wants to make sure I can cast it if necessary. The problem is that Raise Dead has an expensive casting component, - a diamond worth 500 gold. My character was a noble, with a good reputation, so I asked if I could possibly use credit to borrow money. GM said no. Logically, there wasn’t much reason why it shouldn’t have worked, as such things as loans, investment and finance had been talked about in the background before, so it was consistent with the setting. But I also understand that it’s not really fair in a group of players if one PC gets unequal access to resources over the others, just because they picked the noble background. But it wasn’t a problem, because the rest of the party agreed to pool resources and we were able to collectively put together 500 gold for Syme to buy the diamond. The war-forged paladin and I went to the shop, run by a pretty female elf shop keeper, that the GM made sure to describe in detail. We were recognized as the famous chosen Champions of the Gods, which wasn’t too uncommon, as we were basically the first adventures to adventure in the world since the apocalypse, and the gods had made a big deal about giving us our quest. There was a diamond in the shop that would work perfectly for the spell component, so Syme tells the shopkeeper he’d like to buy it. The shop keeper demurely says she can’t sell it. We explained that we’re on an important divine mission and we have the gold and could really use that diamond to help us save the world. She then says “Yes, I understand how important you are. I can give it to you, but not for money.” And then she asked if she could talk to Syme in the back room. The paladin waited grumpily out front and I went to talk to the elf, figuring she would probably have some side quest or something that we would need to do to get the diamond. Maybe her shop was under threat from local strong men or something, which was why she didn’t want to talk about it in the open. Nope. She told Syme she would only give him the diamond if he helped her conceive a child. She wanted to be a mother and having a child of an aasimar and one of the famous Champions of the Gods was ..like, extra special or something. Honestly, I was so caught off guard, I don’t really recall what exactly her whole story was, but it boiled down to the fact that she wanted Syme to be her baby-daddy in exchange for the diamond. I probably should have just shut things down right away, but it had come out of nowhere and so suddenly, I just had Syme stammer and say he’d… "consider it" and then get the heck out of there. By now the whole table was watching and wondering what the heck GM was evening thinking with this. In character, Syme when back to the tavern with the Paladin and told him what the shopkeeper wanted, explaining that he was conflicted, because the party really needed the diamond, but fathering a child out of wedlock and then just leaving without ever being able to be a part of his child’s life was against his morals, especially as he was the head of an important noble family and fathering potential heirs could have sweeping political affects on his whole family and the politics of his island. - I purposely down-played the sexual predator vides GM’s shop keeper was putting out, as I just didn’t want to engage on that level. The Paladin’s player and the rest of the table, however, weren’t going to let GM get away with it. The paladin was outraged in-character and denounced it as a terrible and disgusting thing to do. He was in character, but the looks he gave GM were not subtle and GM got the message loud and clear. GM quickly made up something about the guards arresting the shopkeeper and the party got the diamond for free. At the end of the session, Mother-of-the-Group stood up and pretty firmly told the GM that this was not acceptable. She even call me a couple days later to make sure I was okay, and see if I needed to talk about it away from GM and the rest of the group. I was fine, but thanked her for her concern and thanked both her and the Paladin player for standing up so quickly for me, since, honestly, I’d just been so caught off guard I hadn’t known how to respond. GM apologized and agreed he’s been out of line and we figured it was all over. Lesson learned. Right? I wish.

Ok Crispy (can I call you Crispy?) this is PURELY my own interpretation and opinion, no shade to any of the people who apparently have the imaginations of gods and can just... do this, but... *Eff Theatre of the Mind I hate theatre of the mind* Not only can it result in a twenty minute explanation of whatever setting the dm is coming up every twelve minutes, with OR a basic 'there's a room' with absolutely no thought to what's in it (both annoying and inconvenient in their own ways) I NEED AN ACTUAL SETTING. If you don't wanna design an entire dungeon? FINE, I get we're busy folks irl, but just... give me SOMETHING. Just a picture of the room drawn in crayon will do, even if it's not gridded or you don't expect us to USE the grid! Give me a type of room, a few props. Are we in a library? A ballroom? Is there a giant chandelier for the rogue to use overhead? Ok we're in a sewer, is it dark or not? Is it old looking? Modern? Are there branching tunnels? Waist high crap or ankle deep? Do we have to step over corpses floating in the water? What do you mean I CAN JUST SUGGEST WHAT I WANT TO BE THERE? That's YOUR job! I'm already trying to remember which spells I have set AND how many points I add to the random sh*t in my inventory and the name of the goblin bard we're trying to rescue from the underdark that is APPARANTLY accessible through the sewer that you couldn't be bothered to work out any kind of route of puzzle to navigate! Like I probably COULD suggest something if I had ANYTHING to work with! We need SOME KIND of consistent space to work with. I can only imagine how frustrating and off-putting it must be to people with aphantasia like... how? How are people supposed to do this?

You are playing hexblade, so what you cant be healed. Turn your weapon to a ranged weapon add a bit of darkness/devil sight, and attack with advantage every turn. If the dm wants to bully you further, well than call his bullshit out. Honestly Hexblade might be one of the best classes to fuck with a dm like this. He either has to take your counter attack or sink lower and homebrew shit to counter you. Either way you would have won.

I fucking hate "Theater of the mind". It's always a bullshit excuse to not prepare for the game, esp for combat, which always winds up being a wishy washy cluster fuck. D&D is built on the bones of war gaming, you have to have a battle map, period end of story. The game is not designed to not have maps. It's like not having a character sheet, your just hoping people are going to play honestly and actually remember where everything is. It always becomes a mess when you forgo structure.
