To be fair, the Sorcerer was their IRL friend, it does make at least some sense. Maybe not the best in terms of being fair, but they didn't know one person and knew another, and they still nipped the problem in the bud, just in a way that wasn't quite right.

At that point I would just hand the sorcerer my character sheet and say "Here, *you* can play my character since you obviously think you can play them better than I can," and promptly leave.

You know what I like about these RPG horror stories? They're normal. They're believable. There's no physical violence or other forms of assault, just a creepy guy, bad judgment calls, entitled players, and spineless DMs!

I can't believe we've gotten to the point where the joke about bards has become more iconic in peoples' heads than the actual prototypical bard.

Bards have so much potential and are one of the most open ended classes to build a character around. I currently play a peacock Kenku with the Mask Of Many Faces invocation who's a member of a travelling theatre troupe. They're the ultimate understudy.

I'm currently playing bard and the horny bard stereotype pisses me off when people think that's all bard is, my bard is an asexual, slightly sarcastic, ex circus performer who got his negotiation skills from dealing with groups wanting "protection money" from the troupe before he couldn't take being the victim anymore and decided to seize their own future by adventuring, my party considers him the closest we have to a leader, which doesn't give any actual power over the group, its more the guy who they look to when negotiations happen.

For the bard story. NEVER TELL A PLAYER HOW TO PLAY THEIR CHARACTER!!!! Granted there is a difference between making suggestions if you see them struggling. or offering ideas if you get a feel for what they like to do. But I love the idea of non sex crazed bards.

Sorcerer: “Come on bard use your charisma to seduce the guard.” Bard: “And what about you? Charisma should be your best stat too, if you want the guard seduced so bad, do it yourself.”

The issue is that the other players are Carters GF and work friend and the Cleric was introduced through Carter. Unless they are very understanding about things they are likely to leave when Carter does. Especially considering that Carter is the type who would throw a fit and be a pain to anyone who stays in a game he was kicked out of. Yes, it would be better if they could all just cut someone that toxic out of thier lives, but people don't always make the healthiest decisions

Rogue Healer just sounds like a ninja nurse/doctor. XD Or Medical Ninja from Naruto. Stealthily heal injured people then have them wonder when you did it!

Actually had a similar character in one game who was an enforcer for the fairy godfather before taking refuge in a church and becoming a cleric. He would use stealth and evasion to avoid the enemies attention while supporting the party with healing and buffs from the shadows. And if we ever asked why he could jimmy lock so easily or knew so many people on the wrong side of the law he would just wink and say, “old Seamus wasn’t always a man of the cloth”

I do play a medical ninja in a 5e Naruto homebrew, and this is pretty accurate.

Ugh, I HATE it when people force the horny bard stereotype, especially on those who absolute do NOT want to play that stereotype. I'm planning to play bard who NEVER seduces and instead is shy yet friendly, even planning to make her asexual to ensure that no one tries to force her into the horny bard role. So far, the groups I'm in have been respectful of me and my character choices, so my hopes are high that I won't be forced into the horny bard stereotype with these groups.

I've done one before where the bard was so obsessed with just playing his music, he was hopelessly oblivious to anything else. If it wasn't music, he wasn't really interested. It was quite fun to do; he was very sweet and it soon became very obvious seduction was not going to be his thing. 😆

I thought the way the story-teller talks about their friend LoverboyXXX is nice. I know the "unreasonably handsome face" was probably just a joke about that kind of fan fiction-esque writing style but I'm sure their friend would appreciate it if he ever found it.

That sorcerer isn't just a toxic player, they're a complete narcissist. So is Carter. Guaranteed they're doing similar things their 'friends' all the time and they keep enabling her by agreeing because they think it's just easier to keep her happy. If one of your 'friends' keeps playing the victim, complaining or pouting when they don't get their way, laying on guilt, blaming others for things that go wrong, get rid of them. Quick.

The bard shouldn't have been kicked, but the sorcerer if you ask me. How are you gonna get mad at me for how I play my character? Note that this does exclude being a destructive player, but over not wanting to seduce? Bard player is better off without them. My only worry is that the DM will realize they made the wrong decision but it will be too late

That's how I read it. She's such a massive pain in the ass that appeasing her is just the easier course of action.

To me that last one isn't even about micromanaging. It's about manipulation. They straight up lied to get people to do what they wanted just because that's what they wanted. This is one of those "showing their true colours" moments and should not be dismissed.

When we first started our first campaign, both my friend and I were Rogues. I went Thief while he went Arcane Trickster. After (purposely) fucking up a heist in our first town (don't get me wrong - I wasn't innocent in this going wrong lmao, but he 100% started it) he ended up dying in jail while I was able to escape (I didn't just abandon him, he actively wanted a new character). His next character? A fighter (Eldritch Knight) who SPECIFICALLY HATED THIEVES. Now, this all sounds p bad, I'm sure - and I thought so at the time - but it actually worked out pretty well. He's managed to help make my character less of an asshole, while my character has helped broaden his horizons and open his mind to all sorts of types of people! It made for some interesting roleplay, even if it seemed like it was gonna be a horror story at first lmao.

I also wanna mention - I don't really blame him for any of this, lmao. It was the first time playing DnD for both of us, and while he was doing this I was also a bit of a murderhobo. We were both... not GREAT but we've improved quite a lot!

I always shoot down nonsense like "they're wearing armour around their nipples and a chainmail thong and nothing else" (because yes, I've had two different people, both male, come to one of my games with female characters and that description) and I just tell them no, they're wearing armour or they're wearing clothes, they can't get 18AC from a metal string bikini. But some day I kinda just wanna be like "yeah okay, you show up wearing this with your whole body on show" *first encounter* "you get stabbed, a roll of 9 hits due to your -1dexterity, and you take 1d8piercing, 4d6 poison damage, and die, now come back and make a real character" or just have them arrested on the spot for public indecency when they're all meeting up in a tavern xD.

Unless the platekini is enchanted in some way. After all, if mere bracers can increase your AC... then so can skimpy armor. Tasteless, yes. Possible, still yes. "Female" shaped full breastplates, though, are just as foolish as platekinis. The shaped cups deflect and guide the blade to weak spots where the strike could actually do damage.

The GM who kicked the victim from his group probably got a nice rude awakening or two after when the Sorcerer went on to harass other players even without the OP there. I wonder how soon it happened…

My bullshit meter pegged when Carter said the one person absent from the conversation was planning on quitting. By the time we got through to the end of that, the needle on the meter had pretty much bent from being pushed so hard.

That mild intro story really got under my skin. That person had to know they were making the OP obsolete. I would have re-rolled.

So, Sorcerer straight-up sexually harassed Bard, and BARD’S the one who gets kicked? Yeah, that party is bad news.

Regarding the Bard it is 100% that the Bard should not have been kicked and it was definitely wrong on the DM for doing so. But that being said if the choice was between causing tension between IRL friends or removing the random stranger on the internet we talked to for a few hours in a game I can understand why the DM decided to just kick the Bard instead of trying to make it work. If you had to choose between your IRL friend or strangers over the internet I would not fault you for sticking with those you actually care for (now of course this begs the question as to why the DM even cares for the Sorcerer but perhaps outside of D&D Sorcerer is a pretty nice person).

Every character is the primary character in their own story. DnD is joint storytelling, with narrative being passed around between players and DM. Everyone has a part to play, and no one (DM included) should hog the spotlight. The game isn't the story of one person, but the group as a whole. I've left groups where someone didn't agree with that.

I like playing bards and have played them in two campaigns (one ongoing). I never played the horny bard, mine were always the diplomats and talker in the group. No one ever had a problem with that. I find it strange, that another player wants to dictate, how you play your character tbh.

My group is doing Curse of Strahd and we have a vampire in the party. It’s quite interesting because he doesn’t remember anything about his past working for Strahd. This creates a very interesting dynamic for the party especially if you consider that we are all connected to Strahd in some way.

I just had a thought: Now, I've never played D&D, but aren't sorcerers charisma-based? Why didn't SHE try seducing the guard? Y'know, since she wants people to stick to stereotypes and is a girl. I'm a woman; I can say it!

I know these horror stories exist but I'd definitely recommend giving D&D a go if you get the chance, I was sceptical when I first started but it's been a blast. Anyways, you're right (about sorcerers being charisma-based) And yea, your retort is right too, Bard could have said if they were so intent on seducing the guard then why don't they take the glory? After all Bards are better at stealth/sneaking and the rest of the things the sorcerer mentioned, in this case it actually makes more sense for the Sorcerer to do the seduction/run distraction!

@@DoomsdayR3sistance Nah. Early TL;DR: I just like listening to the horror stories. The thought of playing tabletop bores me to tears. Even listening in on other people's sessions is frustrating AF. I grew up doing freeform chatroom and forum RP: Wacky, no set rules, no DM/GM, no levels, and NO DICE. The environment was set by the room name, and there was no real canon: Whatever was happening then was all that was important, and it likely would get handwaved the next day by virtue of none of the players mentioning it or even knowing it happened in the first place. Your "story" was essentially contained only to you, but I LOVED it. TTRPGs got introduced to me afterwards, and nearly everything about it was/is a turn-off. I know it's for the sake of balance, but it's too restrictive in what you can be/do, and too much of it is left to chance. And I know it's so the DM can plan, but having to schedule anything is a pain. The thought of playing the same story once a week for years sounds like watching paint dry, but times infinity. I know 1-shots exist, but when I want to play, I want to play NOW. ...And not waste time having to twist my character to fit, or be something I don't care for in the first place. If I have to be restricted by numbers and setting, I'd rather just play a video game. The only reason I don't still do freeform RP is because after a long day of very people-focused work, my introverted self needs to recharge by shutting out all humans and chilling with some Rune Factory. XD That and it reminds me that I have stories I probably should get around to finishing.

On the last story, the DMs need to understand that Carter thrives on using 1-on-1 interactions to manipulate people. Probably dies it on all aspects of life. Shut down the messaging and make sure all communications are group wide, which means face to face given cleric's non use of social media.

The person that said 3 is too little for a party that's bs as a forever DM who runs all sorts at the game shop 5 days a week from 10 am till 9pm and has been doing so for a while I run 1 player campaigns ,3 player ,5 player all the time

Guys like Carter need to be kept in check at all times, or just cut out immediately from the friend group. Manipulative behavior like this ruins games AND lives.

Played a halfing bard once. I wrote in to her backstory that her grandfather was a famous military drummer who brought them bardic buffs to the battlefield by chanting the deeds of nearby soldiers. She wanted to emulate her grandad with a sorta Spanish guitar alla Rodrigo e Gabriela. That's all. I don't get the horndog reputation behind bards

About the bard story. What the DM did is called "blaming the victim" doubled with blatant favoritism (taking the will of your "friend" against someone who didn't deserve punishment). The guy was probably not even aware that he was enabling a toxic attitude, seeing how they seemed to honestly believe they were doing good for the whole party. Lack of self-awareness and genuine good intent: a combination i have hated ever since i was able to think for myself. The moron believes they are doing good while ostracizing someone.

Sorcerer: Bard, just go seduce the guard. Bard: Nah, you do it. [then just repeat]

About the last story: kick Carter. If other players leave because they are part of a package along with him, they leave as well. Carter staying is not an option.

Our party has 4 players, lol I think they started with 3, went to 4, back to 3 and then I joined getting us back to 4, with one previous player occasionally jumping in via teleport to help

I got very curious about that last story and followed the link. Found out it's the last part of an 8 part saga. Not sure if you covered the previous parts since I'm new to your channel.

A bard was my first D&D character. I'll always have a soft spot for her. The campaign ended with everyone but my bard dying in an encounter. But as much as I enjoyed her, I doubt I'll play that bard again. How the campaign ended isn't what bothered me. It's because the DM and other players (including my husband) said that my bard talked too much. I actually played a bard one more time in a one-shot with the same people, and they said the same thing. So, I'm done with bards. I have a concept I'd like to try for one. But I'm a bit sensitive and would rather not have my feelings hurt. My husband said he finds me too chatty in general when I play D&D. I doubt he remembers this because he joined a campaign I was (and am) playing in that needed more players. He's even played when I took a couple turns DMing one shots. But I remember.

Gotta say, having run 3 weekly groups, in a homebrewed world, while also being a player in others, that last guy is...very wrong about it being unmanageable to do 2.

Ive said it before and ill keep saying it. I definitely think the usual "problem stereotype characters," like the horny bard, lawful stupid paladin, etc, are FAR less common of a problem to encounter than the people EXPECTING those stereotypes. Whether they're demanding players to "do the thing," or complaining about a player doing the thing before the player even had a chance to do anything.

Opening Story: Yeah, that would be annoying. I’d ask what the other player had in mind? First story: large breasted, dark skinned, topless, promiscuous and 16. Fetish anyone? And this was in a public part of the school, where anyone could be made uncomfortable by those descriptive and the inevitable actions of that PC? How did they not have any social awareness? If the DM wasn’t going to ask what was going on, as this was in a public space, maybe have some more rules than usual. Second Story: Because you do not want to play a stereotype does not mean you should get kicked. Third Story: Wow, it’s a player railroading not the DM.

I... never played my bard as a sex crazed character. She wanted to write an epic adventure no other bard or minstrel had heard and so she set out on her merry way. She *did* end up being a bard who cast spells as though she were a wild mage, however. Has a pink rabbit pet that used to be a bandit. The only survivor of his band after they ambushed us...

That first story makes little sense to me. The healer feat allows a character to be able to use a healers kit on a character once per rest, being a rogue means you can bonus action disengage to get to someone without being downed. This is a very limited heal that having multiple of might easily become necessary in a low/restricted magic setting. Not being unique doesn't mean a character isn't still beneficial to the party or "good".

Seems like a communication issue, like if the other rogue was really thinking of supporting the party instead of intentionally stealing a character concept. There could be homebrew mechanics that make the rogue healer build more viable or they weren't going to be at a point where that build would be useless.

Kick Carter. Trying to work things out with someone like that is throwing good money after bad. Not even a good friend outside of dnd. If he's okay with this behavior god only knows what else he thinks will be acceptable behavior OP vampire

To story three laughs in two player DnD (just DM and player)

If anyone thinks a Bard is boring or should only be played a certain way, then that's a huge red flag. Bars are arguably the most versatile class in the entire game. They have subclass options that let them fight. They can be backup healers in a pinch. Expertise lets you build out your skills to however you have envisioned. On top of all that, they can learn any spell in the entire game.

The 4 Alignments of problem players Lawful stupid. Chaotic stupid Awful neutral. Stupid greedy.

Bard- Is essentially a factotum Internet- LOL BARD HOR-KNEE Bard- Becomes a meme and loses everything that made it reasonable

"According to most sources" ... Not really. There are vampires that get stronger by drinking the blood of other (stronger/older) vampires. There are vampires who are bound to their Sire's will till they drink their Sire's blood. Vampire mythology is vast.

@Naukumaija Mau-mau surely there are vampires with a conscience, willing to give their own blood to protect the living - and who's easier to hunt than someone who's volunteering to be caught? One common element in vampire stories is vampires who feed on animals so they don't have to harm humans - but always animals, never each other

Given that not many is mentioning the first story/post, I wanted to ask what would be the best solution for that situation. The higher leveled player rolled a new character that makes the original poster feel useless due to filling the same niche as them and also being higher level. Is there a good solution to this?

@Naukumaija Mau-mau that's a way to let them know how you feel, but I was asking about the solution. I don't think you can ask the high level player to roll a new character if they already started playing it, or can you?

I'll give you a perfect way to fix the Carter situation: sit down the people who he brought into the game, but who are having fun and don't want to do any of the stuff he's suggesting, and tell them that, youa re kicking Carter out. If they want to leave, that's fine, you hope they'll stay but you know what a bully he can be and do't want them to get in the middle of it. Then bring in the out of town friends to replace anyone who leaves, and kick Carter the FUCK OUT

Two Healers in a party is a problem? Two Rogues, working together, is not a benefit?

My first character was a rogue, in a party of 6 with 2 other rogues. Working together, the three of us managed to get 3 sneak attack bonuses on a sleeping giant lizard and took out a huge chunk of its health before the fight. Rogues working together is most definitely a benefit.

I think the issue is making practically the same rogue but better when OP was trying to not get overshadowed.

my characters are varied in race and class but i usually rely on my athletic halberd wielding half orc blood hunter going berserk

I don't like the overly flirty bard type either. While I'm not ace, I prefer to make my characters either ace, or just not interested in anything sexual whatsoever.

Sorcerers are charisma casters too. Why can't the sorcerer use their own persuasion to seduce the guard? -_-

So my question is why didn’t the Sorcerer try to seduce the guard if they wanted them seduced so badly? Also the legend of LoverboyXXX lives on, all of the stories featuring them are great!

I'm gonna guess the Sorcerer would whine about asking a girl to seduce is sexist and worse than asking a Bard to seduce. I too fondly remember LoverboyXXX's legend. Those are perhaps my favorite tabletop horror stories.

I'm not saying the Bard is lying, but we have only heard her side of the story. Seems a little strange to get kicked only because you are "useless" in one instance. Again, not saying she is lying, but need to have more facts before making a judgement.

Sounded like the DM kicked the Bard because it was the only way to shut Sorcerer up.

I don't see how the dm could have kicked his irl friend from the game over the new player he barely knows. That was just unfortunate

Could have pointed out the sorcerer was wrong and stupid, regardless of her previous friendship. Maybe even especially because they're friends that the truth should be told instead of letting a friend be a jerk.

I don't think the DM handled that Bard situation very well.

I'd be surprised if anyone besides that sorcerer thought it was handled well. Some guess DM was choosing an established friend over a stranger, but that doesn't automatically make it right.

If you want MY opinion, Carter is TOXIC AF and they need to find another place to play so they can throw him out of the group! Trying to ruin a campaign so you can basically force your own ideas on your "friends"? Not a good look.

The only time i played bard was i Skald subclass, which basically was viking warrior historian. I couldn't seduce a prostitute with a whole bag of gold in my hand. so I was very far from the seduce trope bard. That was fun as hell.

My philosophy surrounding character creation is making fun characters instead of deep, compelling ones. Because the silly birdman monk that can only speak via mimicry is compelling in his own right.

The story about the sorceress I kinda have to disagree with the assessment about the DM’s actions. Everything you said regarding the sorceress being toxic, yeah, that’s correct. I agree that she instigated the problem but, OP pointed out the DM and Sorceress (and assuming the rest of the party) are IrL friends. So all in all this is t choosing between keeping one of two friends or one of two strangers; they’ve gotta choose between a friend and a stranger. We don’t know is outside the game sorceress might be a decent friend and either way imagine the amount of drama they’d have to deal with if they chose bard to stay instead. I can understand the moral and emotional reaction to hearing the story would be “THATS messed up! OP doesn’t deserve to be kicked out” and you’re 100% right, but realistically most people would put keeping the friend group dynamic over siding with a stranger who’s in the right.

@@ArcCaravan wasn’t necessarily saying the DM was right. But even after a year of having wrote this while I still believe the DM had to make a choice between a group friend and a new person/stranger. I would also hope that there was enough friendship and integrity there for OP to set his friend straight and let them know what they did to OP wasn’t cool.

I have never understood why people think Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters are fun. I like my characters to have flaws. Makes them more human in my opinion😊

Honestly though, OP from the first story is rather dickish as well. Sure, the behavior of 'that guy' was weird and creepy, and deserves all the mockery it gets. But there's really no need to drag his physical appearance and speech impediment into this. Would it have been fine if a handsome guy without stutter had done this?
