I think I saw that thread myself the other day or so - it was actually for Starfinder (hence the spaceboots thing). I have to wonder if the GM thought that you couldn’t get an environmental seal and traction for hooves which is just weird. Especially as the crafting system in the game has things that are basically programmable matter and the setting canonically has things like 3D printers. EDIT: Just found the thread again and I was half-right on what it was for - the game was using Starfinder’s setting, but Pathfinder 1e’s ruleset. So the bit about programmable matter may be off (though they are an actual setting element so the GM might’ve ported them over) but still. Second Edit: The thread’s OP has edited it to add that they’ve sent the GM a letter saying they’re leaving that game. Probably for the best if the GM’s being a dick like this. Starfinder’s a setting where some of the playable races don’t even have *legs* let alone feet but they have fully-functional spacesuits, why can’t tieflings? They’re more random that in DnD (more the result of planar influence or the like than a true-breeding species like 5e presents them) but I’d be shocked if they were the only species in the Pact Worlds to have cloven hooves.
@MrCrunchytime

Thing is, GM's making such a fuss about it, but all they have to say is "You find boots that fit". That's it. I swear, there are too many GMs that sweat non-problems.
Oh wow, hi I'm the OP from the Battle Royale story. Just wanted to say hey, and add that he at no point asked if we were okay with this or even had time to do something like this as it was not in the agreed on time. I would likely not have had time to do it even if I wanted to.
Bet the anti hoof guy just wanted to make the character more appealing in his head. 'not wanting to design (describe) her boots' seems way too weird of an excuse.

Respect is a two-way street. Earn loyalty, "captain".
If you're a paid DM, you'd better damn well make sure your group can get along and everyone's having fun, even moreso than normal. If you have a player as rough and frustrating as "Kirk," better off to just refund them what they paid and give them the boot.
@SapphWolf

That's what I was thinking the DM should do after the first session.
I've met Kirk. Perhaps not this Kirk, but they come in all shapes and sizes. This is the kind of person who is absolutely convinced that they can do everything themselves and will continue to do so after they've landed themselves in the hospital, having broken every damn bone in their body trying to pull some foolish stunt.
Intro story- We have minotaurs as a playable hero class in our world and any magical boots found have a chance to be specifically for the race of the hero that found them. Story 1- An interesting idea, IF it had been presented at a Session 0. Otherwise, just let everyone know there are more players than you can handle and ask who wants to leave. Story 2- Was confused as to what a Gygaxian was until I heard more of the story. Dude, the fact that you are a long time player of D&D doesn't mean you're a GOOD long time player of D&D... Story 3- This was not Chaotic Stupid, this was an a-hole thinking they were playing Skyrim. Dude should have been booted after Red Flag #2...
@SapphWolf

That was my same thought with the last story. "Oh goodie, another player who wants to treat D&D like Skyrim."
If you pay to be in a campaign, and they try to shift you to another game, demand your money back immediately. *Period.* It's not what you paid for, it's not what you signed up for, and it's not what was promised. That's not only wrong, it's basically illegal in terms of offering a service and then replacing it with a second, sub-par service not worth the initial payment.
The Starfinder ship rules makes it a point to say the captain isn't an autocratic leader and is there to ensure the crew works the best it can towards a common goal. I think that language would help much with the issues in game 2 to set expectations.

The GM in the Kirk story likely was a friend of the GM or something. I get the feeling the GM was specifically running this game for Kirk, and OP was just there for Kirk to play with.
Friend 2 in the battle Royale horror story here! Was excited to be in another campaign, was not OK with the DM in question going back on his original 8 to drop 3 people, even less of a fan of the way he'd handled eliminating people. As one of the five survivors of random kicks, I protested the method and promptly got the boot myself. Had a second invite to his server, which I immaturely used to return, give him the finger and remove myself on my own terms. I'd made quick friends with the writer of the story, and had dm'ed them before this had all gone down, luckily for me. Addendum to the story: the dm in question didnt make it to his first session before he'd lost all but one player and posted a separate looking for group. Addendum 2: the DM in question had been posting one shots nearly daily, and has since gone back to posting one shots. I like to think people got the clue, and while I don't approve, word must've gotten around, because his posts always get bombed with the servers negative emotes and he hasn't posted a new lfg in about two weeks
I don't blame Kirk's player half as much as the GM. When a GM has no control over a campaign this kind of shit is going to happen. Kirk is a bad player but DM is pure shit tier, which is doubly blameable as he's being paid for this!
“She’s wearing unique brown leather boots, which at first glance are complex and incredibly intuitive, as they provide support and protection to the hoof while still taking advantage of the natural advantages of said hoof. It’s unclear if they’re a design that she herself created or was commissioned by some talented blacksmith, but they’re effectively wonderful either way.”
"8 players. A bit high, but nothing a good DM couldn't handle." I....hardly disagree. If you KNOW all the players and all the players are disciplined and nice enough for this.....maybe? But that is just too freaking high under normal circumstances. (ie: randos off the internet...)

Agree. A group of experienced players who know each other, and are already good with the group dynamics, can pull it off. The chances of success with strangers is pretty low. Back in the paper/pencil days, we pulled off a few 8-10 player campaigns - and even with veterans/known players, for big numbers we usually would run with 2 DM's (Main handling plot/rp/scenes, and a #2 taking care of mechanics/rolls/tactical duty)
"They look like boots that were ment for hooves instead of feet" oh man That was soooooo hard!!
This is exactly why I am no longer shy about just kicking players out.
Wow, I played a Lizardfolk, in one of the few games I get to play and not DM, in the north and spent like a week enthusiastically trying to design practical snow boots for taloned feet....I thought all DMs where like that.... O.o
If anyone is curious about the minor horror story I mentioned from the campaign I was in before the Battle Royale campaign happened. Basically a player was cheating by editing his stats and got kicked as a result. I left the campaign due to a mix of factors, but one was an excess of character death, including my Cleric, just was having a hard time enjoying it after that.
Intro: Hooved tiefling art is pretty common, so the DM is just lazy. People already designed them, so just do a quick search. I'm guessing he's the type of DM to act like he made everything from scratch (he didn't just steal someone else's work and called it his own) and will remind the players every time they want to do something that he doesn't like. Battle Royale to Join D&D: The battle royale might have been a mistake, but kicking people out without giving any reason heavily implies that he was just a garbage DM. D&D isn't even a PvP game, so I don't see the logic outside of only accepting DPS classes in the end. I am part of a server that does PvP one-shots every week, but they make that clear in their post for it. Main Character "Captian" RUINS Game: I think Kirk and the DM are real-life friends. That would explain things too much. And the DM does deserve scorn. Not only where they quiet and enabled Kirk, they also wanted to let him back in after Kirk's meltdown and tantrum. As for Kirk, well, he lived up to the actor that played Captian Kirk in the show. Yeah, the player really needed to learn that playing as a team is a big part of D&D, even in Gygaxian games. Speaking of, him throwing out that he played Gygaxian games should have been a red flag, especially considering that Gygax made Tomb of Horror, a module that promoted the DM vs Players mentality. Old-school players shouldn't throw that out to show dominance, they should mention it to show their age and tell their stories of glory and cringe in the group's free time. Chatotic Stupid Strikes Again: I think it being a one-shot in a in-person group was the only reason the DM and group didn't kick them out. Pre-campaign one-shots are a great idea, especially with cases like this. Glad the DM didn't allow them to return after this, and I hope everyone learned their lesson. And I'm guessing Wiz saw it as "LOL RANDOM!!!!!" and didn't even care about the rest of the group.
I also use the no flying races because I've seen so many power gamers abuse it's ability and ruin so much fun at the table. If I have a player I can trust, I would allow it but it's really hard to justify
A good tip to all paid DMs around the world, if McDonald's can refuse service to a problematic client and ask them to leave for the sake of the other costumers, you can do it too, just because someone is paying for your services it doesn't mean you're their slaves
Re: boots for hoofed tieflings. I recall a 3rd party supplement for pathfinder added a basically half-satyr race that mentions them wearing a modified form of cavalry boots (or other high heeled boots) to hide their hooves
Oh my Luna, these stories. I wouldn't not have tried to "tough out" any of these kinds of situations myself.
My guess was, that Kirk was a friend of the DM (so, favoritism). Either that, or the DM doesn't have the skill/experience to warrant charging money. Any competent DM is going to put a stop to such an obvious "main character" player ruining the fun for the rest of the table. (and damn sure better do it, if said players are also funding you)
@podtrooper3219

And in the story, I was fully expecting the pilot and engineer to agree letting the 'captain' go off alone, to explore the underwater base as he demanded - followed by them disengaging the ship and taking off. That's what I would have done... Bye Felicia!
As a fan of Star Trek the fact that the problem player was titled Kirk hurt. That person has no idea what a Captain's role is on a ship.
First Story: I honestly wonder if the DM actually originally planned it out like that from the start. Make a campaign for 5 people, advertise it for more in case they didn't get too many bites, then cut the numbers down based on a trial by combat. Logically it makes sense, but it's still a terrible idea to actually pull off. Second Story: I don't understand what the other player wanted from OP when the GM was describing the scene to them. I get that he was being obnoxious, but if a GM is in the middle of describing a scene to me, and someone is yelling at me mid-description to tell them what's going on, I don't see how that could work. Gotta wait for the GM to, you know, finish doing their job describing the scene before interacting with each other. This guy just sucks overall. Some people just think they're great because they've "played since First Edition" so they know everything about every TTRPG. I didn't start until 3.5 and I think I'm a pretty alright player; I wouldn't say I'm better or worse than anyone, because it's not a competition. This guy just had a weird power fantasy that it sounds like he would've rather done in a one-on-one game, but he dragged a bunch of players into it and made everyone miserable.
Damn, Kirk in the second story makes Zapp Brannigan look like Jean-Luc Picard.
Opening story: that's a foot thing for sure!
DM didn't necessarily have to just tell Wizzy to leave the house to get the character out of the game. As soon as Wizzy started burning shit, DM could've said "are you sure?" and then when Wizzy proceeds, have the flames rapidly engulf the house, something falls in front of the exit, blocking it, and a burning beam falls from the ceiling and crushes the kid. DM could tell Wizzy that the opportunity to make a new character will be between that session and the next, but the player is done for the night and can stay and watch quietly or leave. After the session, DM has the opportunity to tell Wizzy not to come back, or explain the problems with the character's (and player's) behavior and create a better character for the story together, giving Wizzy a second chance if DM is into that sort of thing.
I would've totally malicious complianced kirk. Ie stayed on the ship with Johnny and then marooned kirk.

Honestly, a battle royale to determine who’s in the party sounds like a lot of fun. Should let people know about it going in though, and characters should start at levels 3-5 for more interesting build ideas.
@MogofWar
Жыл бұрын
No! It's a stupid idea on its face because it reduces every player character to their individual lethality which is jusr one dimension of many in the overall meta. People who built their characters as social, utility, or support are automatically eliminated unless they find some way to make social, utility, support, and lethality all lean on a single stat. (Like with my Sorcerer Mage Tank build... Definitely more powerful in Pathfinder than in 5E, due to the favored class mechanic and a few key spells that I'm not sure were ported to 5E) It also unfairly favors people who have all the books or have pulled some broken homebrew off the D&D Wiki. Then it also creates conflicts between the Lethality hounds and... well the normal players who aren't maladjusted psychopaths, when luck of the dice, or an oddly versatile build puts a Roleplay centered character actually winning the fight. Murder hobos do not like sharing a party with a role-play centered build that is also more lethal than theirs. My mage-tank build was a meme in 3.5(Still doable with good rolls) but in Pathfinder every other minmaxer was staring daggers at me when I unveiled that thing... Then they were cool with it when they actually saw how it went in combat, and I walked them through every step I took to have a Human Sorcerer start with 14 hit points at level 1. People who are purely combat focused as players get annoyed when a social character is able to tank on the front lines and also maintain high damage outputs. (And I kinda get it, it's easy to hog the spotlight. And if you don't take the spotlight you might also trigger these same folks because you're not playing optimally at that point.) And why am I even bringing this up? It's because the spectre creates toxicity if you don't properly hammer out the party dynamic. Starting with a Battle Royale and booting the lovers frontloads the worst case scenario, and starts the campaign on a downward trajectory from there. And the logic that it "can't get any worse" NEVER works out that way, and even if it did, you're setting a pretty bad baseline.
"Don't worry guys, I'll get that guy who keeps insulting you and trying to prevent you from playing the game you're paying for, to play again." Normal People: "What? No. Let him go, why would we want him back?"
ok, with my experience of Draenei race from Warcraft, they don't wear a boot, they just strapping a leather around their lower leg and call it a day
For the Kirk story, if I was DMing I would have had something go wrong with the Ship due to the Captain 'micro managing his crew. For example, whilst telepathically controlling the ship (rather than letting OP do it) something happens that requires a captains desicion but because Kirk is flying the ship he can't interact with the crew member - out come part of the ship explodes or inocents die, Kirk then finds he cant be both pilot and captain without things starting to go wrong. We could go further if Kirk kept doing this sort of thing by having a crew member report their captain for dereliction of duty and end up looding their rank. If you work with the 'actions have concequences' this kind of behaviour can still be fun to work around. 😉
@360entertainment2

I’d be with you on that but the player seems really arrogant and would probably “blame the crew” if anything happened. If I were one of the players I would’ve stunned the captain, placed him In the brig, and then notified Starfleet that the Captain had “gone rogue”!
Captain ain't really supposed to fly the ship. It's his purview to direct his crew, and they follow the orders, with his higher command offering suggestions based on what is going on. The rest of the players should have spaced him. YEET OUT THAT AIRLOCK.
Opening: heaven help the player that wants to do centsurs, minotours, or satyrs
The DM doesn't even have to come up with a description. He can simply say, "She has cloven hooves and is wearing boots." DMs don't have to describe the PC appearances. The PC can describe that. He can say, "The boots fit her hooves perfectly, as if designed for them," and the players will know what's up. He's literally threatening to KILL a PC, because he doesn't like their feet, and doesn't want to describe their footwear? So, just don't bother to describe the footwear or let the PC describe the footwear. Honestly, though, I'd leave that game. That DM is not worth playing with, if they're going to threaten your character over something some trivial. You'll be walking on eggshells the whole time.
I find it odd that Kirk was allowed to keep acting up like this, I’m also surprised the “crew” didn’t go all “Vietnam” on his butt and “Friendly Fired” them!
any time I ever hear anyone ever describe themselves as having played D&D from 1st edition and yet are still terrible plays/DMs you know they're full of crap. They just want people to think they're old school and therefore good. Most actual veteran players I know are super chill and just want to geek out and kill monsters.

As a tiefling with hooves I just go with spats.
Boots for paws or hooves? Easy - high heels have been a thing for a thousand years. In fact, raised heels in shoes have been the norm for since the 1970's.

CAPTAIN!! Izzy is trying to set the ship on fire again! He said klingons would taste bettre barbecued.
In regards to Wizzy - once he starts burning the shop would it really be so unreasonable for the DM to stop the session and lay down some ground rules? The player obviously is out to burk down more than the shop - as in the game. I should think a frank conversation is in order about what Wizzy wants out of the game vs the other players and what everyone will put up with.

To be fair: The Kirk WAS playing like a true William Shatner...
I hear so many horror stories from paid games nowadays. So glad I've avoided that trap.
Yes captain. dear lord that STOS story was pain lol.
OMG -_- My tiefling warlock has cow's hooves and a cow's tail. She wears floor-length dresses the hide them because she's insecure about them (tieflings are VERY rare in our setting). Her dex is abysmal, so the DM and I joke that between the hooves and the dresses, she's not exactly graceful. It's funny, it's a cool quirk for my character, and it's never interfered with gameplay.
Captain Been watching for awhile actually got me back into playing back in November Still not DMING after quitting around 2010ish
Every time I've heard someone call themselves a guygaxian is a quick way to get the boot.
How to solve that opening non-issue: "Your spaceboots are still spaceboots, but look slightly different to match your cloven hooves." Done. Perfect. No effort. If you really wanted to do something special, just like make them similar to how horseshoes for goats look but with more pizzazz and special abilities (I want to own a goat so I've looked into it and they do exist and also already look like boots). Or just like ask a furry, they probably would know how boots for goat feet would work. Like Google is amazing and takes 5 seconds.
Wow. "Kirk" clearly doesn't understand metagaming.
Yeah, no, I would've demanded a refund at the first instance of Kirk's shenanigans. Getting money involved in TTRPGs (outside of supplies) just always struck me as a horrible idea, anyway.
So, the battle Royal thing actually sounds kinda dope, but it’s definitely something that should be advertised as being part of the campaign and not sprung up randomly. Like “so I’m looking to make a group of 5 BUT if more than 5 people show up for this we’ll have a day 0-and a half Battle Royal to determine which brave adventurer get to partake in the quest.” This way it becomes apart of the game and maybe even spark a secondary game for the people that didn’t make the first batch.

Hi, OP of that story here, and I actually pretty much agree with you here. Though if he had said that I probably wouldn't have signed up.
Oh perfect, just finished streaming and needed something to listen to while chilling. Ty
You know.... after hearing this a few times on that opening story... 10 buck says that DM just fetishized boots and was too lazy to even imagine what hoof boots look like/didn't like the idea of them and preferred normal booted feet....
Never let a player play the captain. The captain should be an NPC who asks the player characters for advise so that they make the decisions together. Giving one PC authority over the others is just begging for trouble.
Playing a captain is entirely wrong for someone who wants to be taking actions. Generally the captain is supposed to be the brains and the other station the limbs. The brain tells the feet to move it doesn't get out and move the body on its own. The captain orders the pilot to pilot, they don't take over piloting themself.
The last story there... he is not just being a murderhobo, he's a Penguin Club banning speedrunner!
Wha-.... but, other races already have hooves. Surely a hooved tiefling would just use boots made for a satyr.
Captain, oh captain!
Captain!
For the first story... honestly, if the GM thinks it's hard to come up with a good description for boots (among every description he has to do), just let the player do that for him instead!! lol. It's his character anyway...
Captain Story 1 - This was hilariously stupid. Know your player limit. Main Story - Once again a bad example of a paid DM. He would sooner force TWO of his PAYING CUSTOMERS sit out to appease one asshole. That is bad business. I would have demanded my money back since this was a bad service I did not want. Story 3 - OP was smart to run a one shot first and it is apparent this brat is not gonna get another recommendation.
Gee Whiz! In MMORPG games we call that playstyle ”griefer”. Someone whos game fun seem to focus on ruining the game for others and little else. As for the boots. Imagine going into a used clothes shop and reaching down into a bin and picking up a random pair of boots. And as if through magic they actually fit and are comfortable to walk and climb and fight in! What are the odds? And yet, in pretty much every fantasy game I’ve ever heard of, that is how magic boots work. You can even give the same boots to the petite female half-elf druid, the barrell shaped dwarf cleric or the hulking orc barbarian and they will just fit. And we pretty much take this in stride, because otherwise magic boots would become almost completely pointless and annoying. But this one GM says he can’t imagine up some boots for cloven feet. Gimme a break.
How do ppl like that weirdo in the last story not have any sense of shame or self awareness on the fact that everyone around them thinks theyre being fucking weird as hell

WOW, Kirk was an A**. I would have been demanding a refund from the jackwagon GM. He was favoring Kirk even if by negligence. He failed to rein in the main character syndrome suffer.
For the last story: could be intentional malice, could be inconsiderately putting their fun ahead of others. Although to be honest, not sure which is worse.

An npc wizard tries to sell you a magically interconnected abacus that's a part of a vast magical network of abacuses where each has a set position of beads that cannot be occupied by any other and the unique position represent real monetary value. After dumping the party coffers into the investment, the party takes the magic abacuses to the banking union where they are mocked to shame by the teller putting the beads of his and all the other workers in the same places. Party now finds them in the same place as the wizard and scamming others to sell them off in an attempt to recoup their losses. It's later discovered the abacus network is maintained by soul powered magic engines located deep in the mountains that are slow sucking the energy and life from nature in the area.

That's fucking brilliant, I love it.
NUMBER FIVE... IS ALIVE!!!!
Never pay up front
Hot take but it feels weird charging players to DM
So wait wait wait. Are you people telling me that for real you pay actual money to play rpgs? That is hands down the saddest thing I’ve heard in years and this is in the years of covid. I mean I love role playing and a truly good GM is a treasure but there are too many people of quality happy to give it away for free. Anyone demanding money is just a con, don’t do that!
4:16 "The solution is not to have a battle royale fortnite style to see who best fits your group" *Gets a fortnite add right after that* I'm getting some mixed messages here.

Hello Captain

I don't really get the DM in the 3rd story - on the one hand, he says "I don't do PVP", on the other hand, he does nothing to shut that idiot murder hobo down from maliciously sabotaging the adventure for everyone by having his character act like a completely crazy psychopath. If you don't allow PVP as a DM, then you also need to intervene against destructive actions that would inevitably lead to PVP if the other players were allowed to have their characters react like they reasonably would react.

Would hooved tiefling wear horseshoe?

My first thought too. Hooves generally do away with the need for footwear. But OP mentioned space boots, which could mean they would need some for a hostile environment (vacuum/cold) to avoid injury.
Interparty conflict loses A LOT of its charm when the characters involved have such a huge power imbalance. I actually know someone that plays like that. As a person they're fine enough to hang around but give them any percieved authority or power over other characters and it brings out this domineering, condescending 'we do it my way' mindset that just isn't fun or really even MEANT to be interacted with in any meaningful way, just obeyed.
