Whiny Man-Child Tries to FLIRT with the DM's WIFE (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

I thought this was going to be a day for mundane horror stories, but then, a got to the last one. That was certainly.... something?
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Don't even ask if the rest of the party follows him. Just say, "OK. Your character is not part of this game. Bye." And then, if he VOLUNTEERS to create another character, ask him, "Will your new characters ACTUALLY work with the party? Because if he won't, then he won't be part of this game, either. Your choice. Work with the party, or go away. There is no third option at my table. I will NOT run a separate adventure for you."

Okay, as a Gambit fanboy (i'm from New Orleans, he has an unfair advantage) I am ticked off that HC would claim make a Gambit clone that wouldn't be motivated to help someone screaming for help. Seriously he may be a womanizer and a thief, but he is also a HERO, he wants to help people. If you're playing a selfish douche who wouldn't help someone screaming for help, you're not playing your Gambit clone correctly. Does being so ticked off about non-canon make me as bad as HC? I'm gonna use the excuse that him telling others to stick to canon and him telling others how to play their characters means HIS character should stick to canon and I can tell him he's doing it wrong.

Naw, I also play Gambit in all sorts of game formats whenever I get the chance, have done so since I was a wee little babby, and I was ranting at my computer screen when that part of the story came up. He's an IDIOT. Sure, Gambit may be a smooth-talking sex addict, but he won't ignore LITERALLY SAVING LIVES just to flirt with a teammate! He's a scoundrel with a heart of gold, he WANTS to help people, he tries to act like he's all jaded and doesn't care, but he really really does. It's part of why he's such a great character! Too often, people just mistake Gambit as a character they can project their hornball tendencies on, and use him to get their jollies at the expense of other people in games because of his flirtatious personality, and it's reducing him down to such a one-dimensional shadow of what his character really is that it's just insulting.

  • @atyrannosaurusrex

    @atyrannosaurusrex

That is something a lot of people seem to not understand about Gambit. They see Gambit is likeable, but don't understand how. Gambit has a heart of gold. He wants to help people and is a hero, sure. What sets him apart from other heroes is his unique personality. He pretends to not take things seriously, but absolutely does. His humor is a deflection because that's how he copes with stress and trauma. Gambit is actually funny, witty, and charming. If you aren't any of those, it is incredibly hard to roleplay that. You need to have a certain confidence in order to pull that off. The problem is that a lot of Gambit clones just *expect* people to find their characters as charming as loveable as they find Gambit. They want to force the women they pursue to find them charming, which in essence is antithetical to everything that Gambit is. Gambit may be a 90s womanizer, but he isn't a rapist and he cares about more than just getting laid. Gambit is a hero who breaks the rules, not a rulebreaker that is also a hero. Whenever I play a womanizer, I leave room for the fact that the character may utterly fail at it. Then I incorporate that into the character. I actually had one character who chased after women, but was secretly a virgin and when he finally got what he wanted, froze. It was hysterical and the table almost died of laughter at the big reveal.

Betcha Lee made his character a Murder-Wraith. A Murder-Wraith is a chemically-augmented Super-Soldier who've been turned undead. They're invulnerable to everything except Magic and Silver. This is something that's NOT supposed to be available to players. On second though, he might have made his character secretly a Vampire. Who is also mostly invulnerable, but most of their vulnerabilities are easily obtained once you know them. (they can tank missile blasts to no effect, for example, but you can kill them with a water gun)

Third Story: Considering that Helpful was trying to suggest "one-on-one RPing" to the wife before they even had characters rolled up, his whole argument of "It's just my character!" kind of falls completely flat. Intro: Adding RNG to character's memories. That sounds like a nightmare. Possible Cheating. Definite Dick.: Refusing to show your character sheet to the DM or help them understand how your character is doing so well isn't excusable. And the other two players just laughing at the disrespect is just disgusting. I can't blame the DM for just walking away after an experience like that. Kicked for Solving a Puzzle: Players have a right to talk to the DM about rulings. This DM seem to have a "my way or the high way" mentality and kicked the OP for that. And yeah, the OP just made two random guesses. Not even saying they are those, but just guesses. If that is accurate, than the DM's reaction isn't excusable. Trying to Seduce the DM's Wife: Something tells me this guy is always kicked out within a month whenever he joins a group. Overbearing, being controlling, raging whenever someone changes the lore for their game (I mean, I think the Forgotten Realms is pretty cool, but I would never rage at someone for making small changes in their campaign), and trying to hook up with someone's wife. That's a That Guy if I ever saw one.

Or just a normal name, like Fred, or Benny or Azim. Keep it short and simple, for ease of use, but it gets confusing and boring listening to people being referred to by class, only. It's even worse when you say, "In the first campaign, there were Rogue, Cleric, Fighter, and Mage. Rogue was the problem player. In campaign 2, Rogue was playing a Barbarian, Cleric played a Mage, Fighter played a Rogue, and Mage played a Cleric. Rogue (The first Rogue, not Fighter, who was playing a Rogue this time) was still being a problem player. When we got to campaign 3, and Rogue decided to play a Warlock, Cleric played a Rogue, Fighter played a Cleric and Mage played a Ranger, Rogue (The first Rogue, not the Cleric, who was playing a Rogue) did the most awfullest thing, because "It's what my character would do," and that's when I punched him in the face. PLEASE! Using class is OK for short stories, but if you have multiple adventures, PLEASE USE NAMES! Just make them simple. We all know about Karens and Kevins.

Rolling to remember mundane things like a person's name you met seems like something my rp character would need. he was always vague and mind not entirely there due to reasons, very forgetful, so I could see it as a mechanic for him that after having been apart from a place or NPC for an extended period of time, when they get back roll to see if he remembers or is confused and doesn't really depending on how big an impression they made on him last he saw them or how frequently.

  • @AuntLoopy123

I can see that as a character trait, or if the PC was cursed or had lowered stats, or something. But just regular play, for all characters? NO. It's too much fuss, and doesn't make sense. Sure, *I*, as a person, may not remember something that happened 30 minutes ago, but then again *I*, as a person, have forgotten my own name, multiple times that I actually remember forgetting, and more that I don't remember, but people tell me about. So, sure, if I were playing myself as a PC, I'd tell my DM to make me randomly roll for brain farts. But a normal intelligence or higher character, who is not under a curse or something? NO. That makes no sense, and it just adds frustration to the game. It's like making your characters roll every turn, to make sure they didn't trip this turn. Can you imaging walking through town on a shopping trip, having to roll for Athletics, every 35 feet?

Intro story, I feel your pain. I made a new character for a campaign that I was in. I originally had played a mole for the BBEG, because I was only going to play a few sessions, but I really liked it, so I wanted to join full on. To do this, I said maybe my character can meet the party in the town they're in. I can be passing through on business, and because he had been having a hard time getting the table on track, I suggested maybe I be on my way to my village, which could be near where the party would have to go next, which he liked as an idea. I meet up with the party, role paly a bit, help them with their problem in town, and then we get prompted to have to go to the village next to mine. I say, DM, since I was from the neighboring village, I should know how long it takes to get home from here, along my pre established regular trade route. He says "roll a history check to see if you know how long it takes to get back." I argue this, but ultimately have to make the roll. Intelligence is my dump stat, the only stat I have a negative modifier in. I roll, and get a 3 total. He says "you're just so focused on getting home, you don't know how long it will take." I should have quit the group then, it wouldn't get better over the next 3 years.

Which could be anything as vital as "Remembering the wording of the job we were given." to "Hey, what's the name of that random crab we named." This wasn't helped by our DM hating us naming characters and not doing Precisely what he wanted. He literally asked us why we weren't more respectful to a god, *after* we got mugged by an adult white dragon. This DM loved his lore, except in the case of an Adult White Dragon being smart enough to know when its being flattered, and then mug people, even if White Dragons are supposed to be more savage.

For context, I am working on a good/neutral aligned campaign, and he's playing the type of Chaotic Neutral that veers into evil a little bit, and has told me his character needs material reward to complete "goody two-shoes" quests. As a first time DM, I'm not really sure what to do before it gets to the "roll a character that *will* do these quests" point

That score gives you the modifier you use to see if you can remember something. If they are trying to remember something that happened in the last week they have advantage. After that it becomes an increasingly difficult DC depending on how long ago the information they are trying to recall happened

If I were the one taking all the notes, maybe. But I have enough on my plate, so I assigned one of the players to take the notes for everything that happened in the session. Mind you, I ALSO take notes, but I'm so busy DOING stuff, that I might miss something. I'm SURE I have missed a few things. Heck, one time, I couldn't remember if the spores were green, or pink, so they wound up being "Grink." We laughed about it and moved on. Anyway, with all the memory problems we have in my family in real life, there's no way we're going to impose that on our PCs, in a casual way. ONLY if there's a curse or really low Int/Wis stats. Of course, if your PC has a curse or really low Int/Wis stats, then I may say, "YOU may remember, but let's see if you character does," and make it part of the role-playing that way. But ONLY if there's a really good in-game reason for them not to remember stuff. Why? 1 ) I'm too busy doing other stuff to fuss with that, and 2) MOST PEOPLE can remember MOST STUFF, and if your character has average Int/Wis (10) or higher, then they can remember most stuff. That's what average stats mean: That you are average. I love Puffin Forest, but he had a character with really high stats, except for Int, which as 12, so he played him as an idiot, who frequently did stupid stuff, and couldn't read. But he had a +1 modifier to Int. rolls? NOPE! His DM finally corrected him on that, and told him, "You know, you're character's not really stupid, right?"

I just told my mother, who has memory problems, "You may forget anything and everything, but your character has a high intelligence, and she'll remember anything she heard or read or witnessed. So just ask." If I ever make my PCs roll to remember something, it will be because of an in-game reason, such as a curse that lowered their stats, or something. Why? Because if there is no in-game reason to make it hard, then making it hard is just adding frustration, and extra work for me, and I don't have time or energy for that. I simplify rules (like, if you can read the scroll, and it's on your class's spell list, then you can cast it, no problem. Yes, you can easily cast spells above your level, by using a scroll. But you can't use scrolls that aren't part of your class list), because the rules as written can sometimes be a bit more complex than I can deal with. I have my own memory problems. D&D 5E is already "light," compared to previous editions, and I lighten it, even more, because I'm more interested in the role-playing, story-telling, and social aspects. And that's OK, because you're ALLOWED to make house-rules to simplify things, just as you're allowed to make house-rules to complicate things. So long as everyone is on the same page, and my group also agrees that those scroll rules are too much for US.

And in a surprise twist, he'd actually be a legit badass with that katana. I gave up on that concept, though, because he'd absolutely have to simp for our two female players. I wasn't sure how they'd take that, and I didn't want to risk making either of them uncomfortable. One girl was new, so I didn't know her very well, and the other is a lesbian. Maybe I can play something like that some other time, when we all know each other better.

Your character can respond badly, and I won't take it personally." And then, when you're ready to play the role, for real, and you're about to do something tacky, just say, "Real me is apologizing for what my character is about to do." And best of all, if you can incorporate some CHARACTER GROWTH into the campaign. Like, at some point, maybe after the female PCs have wiped the floor with him, after one too many M'Lady's, he can LEARN something, and being treating them with respect, and maybe even branching out to treating OTHER women with respect, and then, maybe, even getting a real, respectful, EQUAL, romantic relationship with a woman.

Like when my players say "DM, we all know we met a guy, who ____________, but we can't find it in our notes." I'll have them roll history but honestly the DC is super low. Just because 1.) my players really like to roll, and it's a chance to. and 2.) It's for things that are much more obscure. In those scenarios it allows for similar to real life, "Oh what was his name?". Also if they really should know it, I don't make them roll. For things like "What's the name of the city we are traveling to again?"

@@mrroboshadow Ginny Di has a great video about when to make skill checks. Don't roll for it, for example, if failure will not have REAL consequences in-game that the DM WILL enforce. For example, you just failed the roll to remember the name fo the person you just met. He's standing just 15 feet away from you. In real life, if you brain fart on someone's name, you can just say, "Hey, sorry, but I brain-farted, and forgot you name." Heck, it happens to people who are friends, even family. Ask any parent about forgetting their own child's name. So, in-game, at most, the consequence should be that you have to ask someone, including the person whose name you are forgetting, what their name is. They MIGHT be offended, but most people understand brain farts, and would not take offense, so the odds of REAL CONSEQUENCES that MATTER are so small as to make it absurd to roll. Like, you'd have to roll a 1 on a d100 to actually offend someone with that. So, what's the point in rolling for it, then?

I have to admit, I actually really liked Dr Funkenstein’s writing style. Also there is one interesting little nugget with the Adventure Path they were playing through that HC’s Gambit rip-off would’ve probably made a hundred times worse. Those familiar with part 1 of that AP, Burnt Offerings, probably know the bit I’m talking about but for those needing a little jog to the memory - do you remember a certain NPC in Sandpoint, the daughter of the local general store owner, named Shayliss Vinder? See, Shayliss serves a dual purpose - whether the party learn it or not, her family is involved in the inciting incident of Part 2, but more immediately she’s showing a side of the hero worship the party is usually getting after helping defend the town against the goblins at the very beginning. She approaches the PCs and asks just one of them (insisting it’ll only take one of them) to help deal with the rats in the basement of her father’s shop. If a PC takes her up on the offer they find two things down there that are not rats - a small cot and Shayliss’ dress hitting the floor. Needless to say, this “encounter” involves a lot of rewriting or even full on omission to fit the group. Since Shayliss’ dad shows up partway through (whether anything’s actually happened or not) I get the feeling the original author was hoping groups would play the scene for comedy. So it’s probably for the best that HC didn’t last long enough in the group to reach that encounter (assuming the GM hadn’t preemptively yeeted it out the window for the exact thoughts I had when making this comment).

I'm kinda at the point where if I posted a LFG I'd be like "how many rpghorrorstories have you either read or heard?" as an official "interview" question. Anybody forming a new play group with strangers needs to learn these flags. And I guarantee that each of these problem players completely avoid any information about them. Also, if it's your first game ever, you probably shouldn't start with a PbP. Just my opinion there. Finally, more people need to be told directly and immediately that how they designed their character doesn't limit what they can do. Firstly, they designed their character, so they're still 100% responsible for that character's choices. Secondly, they could have their character make other choices with a bit of imagination - figuring out why your character might do something different from the most obvious choice for them can be justified, you can come up with a reason even though it might involve some thinking on the part. Thirdly, they could have their character start to make other choices as starting a growth arc, which could make for an awesome and interesting story about them. "It's what my character would do" should NEVER be an excuse for table decisions that harm the group's story.

So, horror story of my own: for context there's a guy in the outer orbit of my social circle who has this obsession with soldiers, but in a warrior culture sort of way, a romanticized idea of what PTSD is, offending someone I know who does have PTSD, and an obsession with having a love interest that somehow makes everything better. Most times we can move around these features of his game play, or they aren't large enough to get in the way, like a post apocalypse game we had and he didn't pursue a love interest plot, but did try and drive the Hello Kitty Justice Truck into the sunset on the last session, one of two trucks this town had; we did not allow that... The horror story itself: we were playing an Aberrant game, and the other player characters don't exactly matter for this other than That Guy's character, Soldier Smith (I forget what his rank was and don't have the energy to go look, but yes the guy's name was Smith). I don't remember what Smith's powers were, though the player tried to not have any, I think he eventually took super sight to be better sniper. Our characters get introduced to each other, we interact with some NPCs, and there's Mary Kate a childhood friend of Smith's who's freshly single (her fiance had died recently). And much time is spent with Smith trying to have her as his love interest, despite the discomfort of the story teller, who puts out several soft No signals through the character, but Smith persists, and persists, and persists... much the the discomfort of *everyone* at the table. Eventually the player decides after a particularly stressful mission that had him find out another childhood friend of Smith's isn't dead, Smith has a mental break and combat flashback that lasts for days, crying out for Mary Kate. At which point I was beyond done and instead of making light commentary on it I straight up told the guy that this was unacceptable, it was making everyone at the table uncomfortable, that it defies reality five ways to Tuesday and that he needed to cut it the fvck out. His character was removed from play to get some private mental health care, and for reasons relating to another problem character as well the game ended up falling apart shortly after.

The encounter ends with the PC in question having to sneak or run away from her enraged father.
