Insufferable SIMP Doesn’t Last Long In His D&D Game (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Hope you guys like the new story transitions. A few of my friends in the Destiny community ran into some insane copyright issues and since the old transition uses an SFX from a video game, I decided to switch it up. This one fits the tavern aesthetic a little better and I think I'll keep it around.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

"Who needs magic when knife will do just fine?" You say that, but at one point as a level 18 Wizard I stabbed a dude in his kidney because he was also a mage and the DM liked using counter spell. Sometimes as a powerful caster, you need to know when to cast, and when to shank a bitch.

My favourite moment from my latest campaign was when my 17th level necromancer started catfighting against the 18th level necromancer villain in the middle of the main square, with our corpse-minions cheerleading. We both had the bad habit of counter spell each other and a ton of repressed anger. It was chatartic. We called it a truce after a while. The part was impressed. Not in a good way, but it certainly was an impression.

The video got posted on our server, Firbolg Barbarian here just to add to the Sir Simpalot Story. Early on we found a heavy dwarven Armor that our great Sir needed to get fixed since he didnt fit in it. First he asked the only dwarf NPC in our Village to fix it who before this revealed his backstory that he moved in with us because he never wanted to work with metal again. At first I thought its him RPing a ignorant noble but its only getting better from here. It turns out he simply didnt listen to anything any other players did and before asking for the trophy he asked me THE HUTNER BARBARIAN who has been spending all his time establishing he is only good at tracking and killing stuff to fix the Armor. There was a Firbolg Smith in our Village (dont remember if it was a NPC or other PC at this point the last two years have taken a toll) and after asking again who I was he just heared firbolg and assumed i must have been the smith. When we corrected him he was genuinly annoyed at which point it became clear he wasnt just playing the asshole. Anyway nice to see the Story on youtube keep up with them vids^^.

DM here. No he mistook me for his girlfriend. Well not literally but the way he reacted was probably less gracious than someone after a terrible breakup. The story didn't mention that but after i kicked the guy out he went on a complete fit and started spamming me on discord. ''I have GIVEN you MY time and PASSION but you kicked me out like it was NOTHING'', stuff like that. He tried to start drama on the server I had recruited him from, trying to present the story as me being a dick to him for no reason. Eventually I stopped arguing with him (trying to explain what he did wrong) and just blocked him. EDIT: I now realize you meant the intro but ill leave this here anyway.

You do *not* kill a player’s character if they are unable to be at the game in person, or virtual. Doing so not only feels cheap as hell, but also shows a massive amount of disrespect to the player themselves, as you clearly don’t have enough respect to let *them* have a hand in their characters fate

I don't understand why those PCs were present in the first place. Why not say "Oh, the charactes of those not available today run outside the tower when combat started, taking all your luggage with them to safety - they're waiting at the base of the tower for you." Oh right, because the DM enjoys killing characters. The way I handle it is that, if someone isn't present, their character is somewhere safe and sound. Yes it's a narrative asspull, but I prefer having to conjure an explanation out of thin air rather than having characters in danger whose owner's have no agency over their safety at that moment.

There's a guy in my circle of friends who only played joke characters. He doesn't play at all now because with two kids and a job he doesn't have the time anymore, but when he did it was nothing but gag characters. -He would insult nobles, making wild accusations that would have gotten the whole party incarcerated or worse had we not made some impressive diplomacy rolls and had a forgiving DM. -He would fool around during combat, picking the abilities that would make a nuisance of himself over anything actually useful. -Sometimes he wouldn't do anything at all! Just stood there and flexed or something equally asinine. -Scene was too grim for his liking? He would be doing something stupid in the background. I've always kept it to myself because the rest of the group just tolerates it, mainly because the friend that brought us all together is incredibly against anyone "going in" on anyone else in the group. She doesn't like criticism, finding it "harsh" and "toxic", and will constantly justify this one guy's irritating behavior.

I mentioned this on another of Crispy's videos, but I played with a person who made a gag character in the CoC group I was part of last year. This dude's character was basically Arnie's character from Commando, but with the aesthetic of the 1920s and the personality of a basic lawful stupid paladin. He always shot first and asked questions never, and he always spouted off a one-liner before doing so. The Keeper thought it was hilarious and didn't make him stop even after it landed us in a fight that would have been a TPK had that particular Keeper not been so averse to player deaths.

Same thing I thought. Very low for a wizard, sure, but not at all "behave like a child" level. More like "renowned neurosurgeon starts having memory issues" type story, and that could be really cool if played by a good player. Imagine being of average intelligence when you just a few years earlier could see the patterns of the universe and recall every book you ever read... In fact, it could be a cool backstory for a character to have had some sort of dementia or magic equivalent and cured it with whatever ritual or something. So the character is trying to remember everything they learned once, represented by leveling up...

DM of story 1, a few added notes to the story. The reason why I recruited from a big public server for a ''reliable'' campaign is that I simply have the mindset in the online games we play that its better to start with 1-2 people over what I'm comfortable with. Usually scheduling issues will result in some people dropping out within a few sessions and then there would be a healthy party for the rest of the game. So I just wanted a few more people. I was fully ok with them not paying attention or dropping out, but it's always nice to take a chance and find someone new that's an excellent addition to the DnD server you are on. Most of my core players (me included) had come from that public server as an older DM had introduced us to DnD. Then in turn some of us started running games and the server grew, which has kept the server alive for many years. I guess I had been dodging bullets because I hadn't had a real problem player before. As for the romance, I'm generally ok with it as long as it doesn't get sexual (fade to black in that case). I might have been partially unfair with Sir Simp-a-lot because by the time everyone started rejecting him left and right, he had made me uncomfortable with the way he talked to women and his constant interrupting and main character syndrome. So I didn't want to encourage him by giving him what he wants. I let him roll in some situations, but I had the DC really high because his ''flirting'' was just terrible and creepy. Meanwhile the Firbolg was a good guy who was just playing his character, went only 1 for NPC and was very slow and considerate in the way he did things. Maybe a single scene per session, with talking to the NPC like an actual human (or well firbolg) being. I should have probably kicked him out way earlier but I was hoping he could learn as he looked like a new player. Also I wasn't sure what the other players would have thought, maybe it was just me that couldn't stand him? My friend didn't mention that I had nicely asked him to not interrupt or told him that ''you can't command other players what to do it's a cooperative game'' multiple times during the session. So my outburst didn't come from nothing. In the scene with the knights he was about to TPK the party, was being sexist to my friend's character and had interrupted him in the call. So I lost my temper and kicked him out. Then I awkwardly realized everyone hated playing with him but did not want to speak out. I breathed a sigh of relief and decided that my decision was final. In hindsight, fellow DMs just ask your players how they feel about a certain problem player behind the scenes so you don't have to put up with them if no one likes them. Oh yeah I also saved OP as he was DMing another campaign in the same world I played in and Sir Simp-a-lot had learned about it wanted to join. And OP couldn't find a way to say no. The character he was making for that game was somehow even *worse* than the one in my campaign. He was a noble. He had used his retainer feature to give himself a ''hot servant girl who had to obey his every decision''. With even more main character syndrome and a completely Mary Sue pompous character. Thankfully I kicked him out just before the session he would have joined and OP happily followed suit. The session of his campaign opened up with us finding the corpse of his character iirc and we had to fight off some monsters to save the servant girl. We escorted her to a ship to take her back to her homeland. OP dodged a bullet there.

I can't tell which is worse, not using sorcery points at all, or using them infinitely. Our old sorcerer did that, dude just claimed he uses his sorcery points for everything, yet never ticked them off, plus he'd use them for stuff he couldn't do, constantly, like using quickened spell to cast two fireballs, or two twin-spelling a disintegrate, both on the same target, or using his sorcery points to restore spell slots of any level at all, dude must've cast disintegrate 4 times in one combat before. I was way too trusting as a player, I'd never played a sorcerer before so I just assumed "yep I guess he can do that", when I finally made my own sorcerer, I realized all the rule breaking with his sorcerer... yet the dude still had the nerve to tell me I'm playing my sorcerer wrong at level 1, I suck at being a sorcerer because I should be using my metamagic and spending my sorcery points, I repeat... at level 1 >_>

Speaking from my own experience, some of us simply lack impulse control for one reason or another. In my case I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was throwing tantrums in public well into my late teens (the hormonal shifts of puberty weren't helping matters). I knew what I was doing was wrong, knew that I was hurting people who didn't deserve it, but I couldn't stop myself until the rage adrenaline wore off. Gradually I learned to contain my temper until I was out of the way of doing potential harm, but flare-ups still happen and I end up destroying my own property. And before you ask, yes, I was briefly medicated with mood stabilizers. Apparently they zombified me to the point of near uselessness, and exacerbated my insomnia to the point where I was just watching the window for sunrise. They didn't do a fucking thing to stabilize my mood, though.

The first story reminds me of this one character we had in our party. Wise Waldorf, . He was a bearded man in a huge flowing robe and a giant wizard hat. In his hands was a a staff of smooth ivory. He spoke in riddles, and with an air of wisdom to everything he says. Natrually, the enemies, which our dm had be very tactical, would most often try to rush Wise Waldorf. Wise Waldorf was a rouge His backstory is that he belongs to a prominent wizarding family, some of the most presigious in the land. But he could never cast a spell successfully, with it always malfunctioning. So he set out traveling, like his famed ancestor did. Yet because the only spell he could cast was actually just his staff having a cantrip bound to it, and him looking like an easy mark, he got used to defending himself with a knife, until he focused that into being his combat style. His "magic" is all slight of hand and stuff like that. As a result, our enemies would try their best to often get in melee range, only to find that's where you don't want to be. Wise Waldorf was a blast to play alongside. He was great in a fight, and eventually, whenever we knew the enemy would be using tactics, we would actually plan around this whole "kill the wizard first" strategy, making it look like we're doing our best to protect him, while also allowing the biggest threats to slip through to meet his knife. He also was great to RP with, this famed wizard being a sham, and having some heartfelt moments of working through imposture syndrome, something the actual player struggled with. Lead to some of the most wholesome conversations between characters. He was so great, that the next campain was entirely based around his gimmic: We look like one class, but are actually not.

For the final story, I think that if an attack does x2 or more than your max hp, it's an instant kill and you can't roll for death saves, so the op didn't do anything wrong since he was following the rules, while the cleric didn't meta game and the friendly fire would have happened either way since the problem player didn't say anything, so if it wasn't cleric, it would have surely been someone else from the party or possibly the guide even, and all the problem player had to do was say what he was doing to the rest of the party and tell them that he was this specific zombie and to not attack him.

I have to imagine that many of them tried the pen and paper only after playing a video game RPG or reading something like the Drizzt novels. I love both of those things but video game RPGs (even the ones based on D&D) tend to make the player's custom character the literal main character of the game as that's just how single-player focused video games work. The Drizzt novels are wonderful by and large but the character has inspired so many Mary Sue PCs (specifically "Drow with a heart of gold" archetypes) that many experienced players and DMs have come to despise the very mention of Drizzt and/or Salvatore.

Oh lord I'm coming off of my own rpg horror story right now. My partner (just friend at the time of starting) is a dm and wanted to run the Wild Beyond The Witchlight module after it came out. Thankfully, we had enough mutual friends to pull together a relatively large dnd group for it. The first few sessions went okay-- we all loved our characters (which I will be using to refer to everyone in this story): A ranger (me), a bard, a druid, a rogue, and a wizard-- who later turned out to be our problem player. It was wizard's first time playing DnD, so we didn't really expect anything out of the ordinary when we first started playing with them. Their character ended up blending more into the background at first, but they didn't seem to mind, and that's just how ttrpgs tend to end up, so we didn't do anything to change it. Then cleric got added to the party. Cleric is druid's partner, and a long time dnd player and dm. Although, the more important part of that is: wizard HATED cleric. None of us know why to this day, but, as I was their closest friend out of the party, I quickly became a listening ear for all of their gripes with them, both in and out of dnd. They didn't like how cleric talked, they didn't think they meshed well with the campaign, hell-- they didn't even like how confident they were... just, in general. Due to circumstances out of cleric and druid's control, they ended up being super late to a session one night, and so wizard used this as an excuse to give our dm an ultimatum-- basically: either start warning cleric about "bad behavior", or they'd leave the game. Thankfully, DM didn't do this, as they knew that the request was asinine, and so before wizard could leave or anything could come to the surface, the campaign was put on hold for three weeks because of cleric taking a hiatus for mental health reasons and rogue's school picking up. Over that time, wizard got even more nitpicky with their criticisms of cleric while talking to me, to the point where I didn't want to join calls anymore when I saw cleric and druid were on them (something I'm still working on). It came to a head when they told me about a secret romance plot line them and bard were planning, completely without checking with bard to see if it was okay first. I ended up cracking and spilling everything to bard, rogue, druid, and dm a week later after wizard said something very insensitive about bard's DID in an unrelated call. After a long talk with the party the next day, we decided it was best to kick wizard from the group, as they'd done too much, and we couldn't trust things to stay civil with them and cleric in the same space. They apologized profusely to me, bard, and DM over the next week or so, but when faced with the question of what they wanted to do with their character since they weren't allowed back into the group, they backpeadaled and said it was unfair that they weren't given a chance before they were kicked, since they were "trying to change", despite neither I, bard, or DM ever seeing any evidence of a change. Thankfully, the group seems to be coming back together okay. I hope sessions can pick back up again without much of a problem. Tldr a rare case of good player bad friend, rather than the other way around.

Having slightly crazed old characters can be extremely fun, when they don't interfere with the story or other people. This wasn't in DnD but other roleplay, but I had a character years ago who was an old witch doctor. He was fairly powerful, but had experienced so many traumatic events, as well as having his god of death whispering in his head, that he had gone cooky as all hell. He had spent most of his life away from his own people in a jungle, and had next to no skill in the common language. He joined a band of people after he had pretended to be the voice of a fish god underneath a dock the others were fishing at, to have them sacrifice their fish to him. It was plenty of fun, and he eventually had younger folks from the band help him communicate with others. He also tamed an ostrich. Thanks for coming to my nostalgia talk. Rip old idiot man, I still miss him.

I can understand being afraid of expending resources, up until I played The Witcher 3 I had this big problem with refusing to use items because what if I need them more later? So I can definitely understand not wanting to use spell slots or sorcery points and overrelying on cantrips and mundane weapons because you don't wanna risk consuming a resource you might need later. This is a habit that The Witcher 3 actually breaks extremely well, since you basically have infinitely recharging items but can only use them a limited number of times in between rests, you have a lot of freedom to make full use of every item that can give you a leg up, and the game will beat your ass into the dirt if you don't. And coming back to D&D and other RPGs after that, I found I was way more willing to use limited items to prepare for a fight ahead of time

Problem player in the intro story reminds me of someone I played with for about 6-8 sessions before the campaign dissolved because of scheduling issues. System was Pathfinder 1st edition and she was ostensibly playing an Investigator, which is a hybrid class that uses features from the Rogue and Alchemist classes. Except she did not care about using any of her class features. I actually asked her at one point what extracts (alchemist spells) she knew and she said she never bothered picking any out because it sounded too complicated, then brushed off my offer to help her pick some out. Instead she relied almost exclusively on two obviously evil magic items we'd picked up early in the campaign. In combat she only did simple melee attacks with a magic scalpel that had a random chance of skinning the target alive the closer they were to death. Out of combat she relied on a scrying bowl that needed to be filled with blood to work to tell her where to go next in the plot instead of doing any investigative work or god forbid roleplaying. (The blood came from either her most recent victim or she would cajole her boyfriend's PC into making a contribution.) At the time, her murderhobo tendencies didn't bother me as much as her blatant disinterest in learning how to play her character class, but in retrospect it was a bad situation overall.

Intro: Yeah, never play with someone who can fire you or has a similar power of control over you. It very rarely turns out well. Simp Almost KILLS the Party: It's concerning how many of these people seem to refuse to understand that no means no. Also, it's unfortunate that most of these stories involving romances involves the problem player. Yeeeah... You're Just Dead: Maybe OP should do a one-shot for the DM's sister, since her brother doesn't sound like he'll be a good introduction to it. And he's the DM. His claim it was "out of his control" is laughable at best. I hope he's a much better friend off the table than on it. Just Another Spotlight Hog: I wish less problem players had the spotlight hog flaw. It's better suited for the character instead. On that note, I've had an idea for how to play a spotlight hog without being one yourself: If it's in person, have the player and DM raise a slip of colored paper or something to indicate that the spotlight hog can barge in if the player of the character wanted to. Over Discord, I'd say the play PMs the DM that they're ready to be interrupted, and the DM does the same to the spotlight player. Either way, player/DM consent should be key. "That Guy" Rages Police Show Up: Yeah, if someone starts attacking you or destroy property that isn't theirs over a character death that is partly their own fault, it's reasonable to kick them from your friend-group as well as the table. There are lines that shouldn't be crossed that that easily or quickly.

The latter of which would still be visibly casting a Spell, so everyone would still see that you are casting a Spell when you're waving your Wand, Staff, or a more special case, Arcane Grimore around and it starts glowing with Magical Energy from the Weave. You're right that only the Subtle Spell metamagic will work to prevent obvious signs of spell casting. You may have mistaken the use of a spell focus a bit though. The verbal and somatic components, like the DM in the story attributed to the casting, can't be prevented with a spell focus, even if the focus was to glow and be obvious in doing so. I could have sworn I read the opener on a critrole comment section for campaign one. Might just be a coincidence though.

I’m interested to ask; since a lot of the thumbnail art you use originates from the game Smite, do you happen to play the game?

Nope, I’m just a fan of Devin Platts and his art and I don’t know anything about Smite. If you like the art, check out his portfolio in the description!

It irritates the hell out of me, why the hell in this universe everybody thinks that 11=dumb. Read the book. To be that much dumb you need to have like 6 int. 11 is above the average. The thing is all this wizards with their 16 to 20 intelligence stat are 1\million geniuses and by comparison average dude with 11 will look dumb.
