DM Attacked by D&D Edgelord's... MOM?! (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

The last story was lost to the void and I had to re-record. So yeah... that was fun. Podcast this weekend? Maybe. Hopefully.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Karen Mom says in one breath, "maybe we're not the good friends you thought we were," and then in the next breath, "you'll be hurting people who care very deeply about you." Which is it? They can't both be true.

If the DM is wise, the squire might *also* be a member of a noble house (only the lowest Knights normally had a commoner squire) and then you have an entire noble family making trouble for the Knight, possibly along with others, including his own.

Inspired by the first story (not the intro): The Squire huddles in the darkness inside the tent, whimpering and shivering in terror in anticipation of Master's return. He could feel the bruises and scars, both old and new, all over his body; reminders of Master's cruel and vitriolic temper. He remembers how Master berated and insulted him even as he was beating him, calling him weak, pathetic, a useless wretch not worth anything. He dreaded Master's return from the most recent dungeon, recalling all too well Master's sadistic promise to use any fancy new weapon he finds on him. The Squire thought of running away many, many times, but how could he? His family were serfs in debt bondage to Master, that was how he was forcibly recruited into being his squire after all. If he ran away, he'd leave his family at the tender mercies of Master's violent, sadistic whims. He could only weather the storm of Master's brutishness so his family wouldn't. Suddenly, he hears a sound like an armored figure walking up to the tent. He feels as though his heart stops in fear. Before he could react, the tent flaps fly open. He throws his hands up in a weak attempt to ward off any blows. "P-please d-don't hurt me, M-Master!" he whimpers. "I-I-I-" "Ssshhh, it's alright, take it easy," comes the surprisingly soothing voice above him, one he recognizes not as the sneering, hateful tone of Master, but one of the others. It's the Paladin, standing over him. "It's alright, nobody's coming to hurt you. Not anymore." The Squire warily looks up and down at the Paladin. The older man looks as though he picked a fight with a band of orcs then got set on fire. He's wounded and bleeding from several places, his holy armor having taken quite a beating. "Wh-what happened, s-sir?" Squire blurts in surprise before he could stop himself. "Your 'Master' and I had a... disagreement," Paladin responds, eyes narrowing with a contempt and loathing for Master that Squire recognized all too well. "Let's just say I got him to sit down and rethink his treatment of you." Squire dares a peak past the Paladin, and sees Master being dragged back to camp by a braying mule, the other members of the party having a good chuckle at the lord's misfortune as they tag along. Apparently, Paladin had given just as well as he'd taken, with Master's face a swollen mess of bruises, swollen eyes, smashed nose and bloodied lips. Squire feels a mix of catharsis and pity looking at Master's face, "Starting today, you're no longer forced to be his squire," the Paladin adds, matter of factly. "You're free now." "Free...?" the Squire says, feeling a bit of happiness at long last as he feels a weight off his heart. Then he remembers something, his face contorting in fear as icy terror grips his heart. "B-but my family! They-" "Will be well taken care of," Paladin cuts in reassuringly. "I've already sent a message to my temple, and will pull strings to see their debt is bought out. It will mean they'll be working for my temple instead, but I think we can both agree that's the better option." "And what will I do...?" the Squire asks. "Well, you could either go home and help your family," Paladin replies. "Or..." He reaches to the crouched Squire with a hand. Not one stretched out in malice, to hurt or forcefully grab, but one extended in friendship and goodwill, one the Squire couldn't mistake even after years of abuse. "...you can become _my_ squire," Paladin continues. "What do you think? Work conditions aren't going to be great, pay's probably not going to be that good, hours are lousy, but we can both agree work conditions will be better." "Master barely paid me anything," Squire bitterly mutters. "He said repaying my family's debt was enough..." "Then we can add 'better pay' to those conditions," Paladin replies warmly. "You get a share of the treasure, but some of that will go towards repaying your family's debt. How does that sound?" The Squire felt himself smile his first genuine smile in what felt like a long, long time as he grabbed the hand and shook it. "I'd be honored to," he replies. "Sir." "Good man," Paladin replies, pulling the boy to his feet. "Now be a good fellow and help me to my tent; your previous 'Master' left a line of reasoning in my left leg that feels like an angry red dragon took a bite out of it..." And that's how a poor sharecropper's son and much-abused knight's squire took his first steps to be a Paladin of Righteousness, Champion of the poor and downtrod, and protector of the weak and defenseless...

I'm a Paladin Main myself and I feel for the Paladin player trying his best to avoid a situation like this to avoid being "Lawful Stupid"....but in no way would have been Lawful Stupid in the earlier incidents. Seeing how I would have defended the Squire earlier then he did mostly because I can understand Paladin player trying to avoid it, I do myself. But "That Guy's" are asking for it, they can enjoy calling me a cop and whining for as long as it takes my Paladin to pretty much curb stomp theirs!

Every horror story I hear cements my belief that you should confront problem people as soon as possible and cut them out of a group without hesitation if they refuse to own up to their toxic behaviour. Trying to hold on to unrepentant toxic people in the hopes that they'll change always seems to end up costing more in the long run. It's like hoping that an infected toe will get better if you ignore it, only to end up losing the whole leg. Left unchecked these people can destroy an entire friend group, and will not hesitate to do so if it means not having to admit they're wrong.

Story 1- The Paladin acting like a traditional paladin was the real story here- here, here i say! Story 2- The only thing missing from this hodgepodge of tropes was The Neckbeard Story 3- If you can't be bothered to keep track of your own game world and events, why are you trying to be a DM? Just say you lost track of things or use an NPC to ask the players what the plot point was again. Story 4- While all of my characters are straight or neutral nearly half of them are of the opposite sex- and what sex they engage in is no one else's business, in and out of character.

As long as your players are HAPPY, and YOU are enjoying the surprises, it doesn't matter if they MAKE UP THEIR OWN QUESTS ALONG THE WAY! Like, "HEY! This NPC the DM just made up on the spot, because we wanted a blacksmith, made an off-the-cuff comment about how steel is hard to come by these days. LET'S GO ON A QUEST TO FIND THE BLACKSMITH SOME HIGH QUALITY STEEL! RIGHT NOW!!!" This, btw, is something my group would TOTALLY do. I have learned that from experience. OMG, they throw me for SUCH loops. But! I get SUCH a kick out of it, because surprise fun is something that I'm here for, as well. It's like you say: Everyone needs to know, FROM THE START, what sort of a game it is. If the DM wants pure combat, just run a gladiator "pit," where the "overlords" take their gladiators from setting to setting, so the they can see the gladiators fight under different conditions and against different foes. It could be fun, for people who just want combat, and just want to say, "Look! I have a character built who can do these power moves in combat! WHEEE!" Utility characters need not apply, unless the utility players can, routinely, pull a utility out of their butts that can save the day IN COMBAT. But whether you're running a pure combat game, or not, IT IS THE DM'S JOB TO REMEMBER HIS PLOT HOOKS! You can forget little things, but NOT PLOT HOOKS! So, yeah, the DM is completely at fault here. And then, to bash his players to other DMs? SHAMEFUL!

I hate when players just decide they're starting their level 1 characters with absurdly good gear or whatever, either without telling them, or they're the DM's bestie and get special treatment. The cleric in a campaign quite some time ago decided she was gonna start with +3 armour, the DM explicitly told her that wasn't okay, and that it wouldn't be balanced, and she said fine, and showed up to the game with the armour anyway like "it's in my backstory, so you can't take it away". There was also the guy who decided to bring a homebrew legendarily powerful longsword which was red and black and housed the soul of an elder vampire he killed (level 1...) and it trapped the souls of anyone he killed with it, which made the sword stronger and glow brighter as the vampire tortured them for all eternity... edgelord.

The one time I wanted to do something vaguely similar, in 3.5, I planned on taking the Ancestral Relic feat. I had a specific weapon in mind for it, a Large-sized falchion (the character was a goliath). Rather than beg the GM to let me randomly get my hands on a Large masterwork falchion, I instead backstoried it that he had a broken falchion that held great sentimental value for him. He carried the shards around in a chest. It would be useless as a weapon until I reached level 3 and could reforge it (as that was considered the appropriate level to have a masterwork weapon, and so it was the minimum level to take Ancestral Relic); all it would do until then was take up a fairly significant amount of weight in my carrying capacity. The GM liked my concept, and let me roll with it.

Playing characters that aren't "you" is a really fun way to branch into new RP aspects of the game, and as long as you do it from a place of respect and genuineness it's all in fun so long as people aren't uncomfortable and you're not playing stereotypes. I've got a character up my sleeve for my next game I'm excited about for these reasons, my partner is Ace(I'm not but I respect her and her boundaries) but still loves romance and couple things, so I had this build in mind and while designing the background and personality, the idea of the character being Ace kind of organically worked into it. I showed my partner and told the background and she adores the idea. I'm excited to play it and feel like it will help me see even more into her viewpoint, which isn't that why we play characters that aren't "us". To get a new perspective from a place of respect.

Karen Mom RUINS D&D: Yeah, that mom messed up her kid by babying him. Also, got to love how manipulative she was near the end. I don't think she even realized how she was among those "not very good friends" when she said that bit. Bet she blamed everyone but herself for DMing being difficult. The powergamer was also a piece of work. Not for powergaming, but how as well as everything else. "You Are iDIOTs for... Playing My Game?!": I don't know if the GM was saying that to absolve himself of responsibility, or because he just didn't care enough to write it down. Either way, it wasn't just a communication issue, he was also just not caring about the players. It's like if the DM from the All Furries story didn't even care enough to add his own DMNPC. Homophobic "That Guy" Rage Quits: Yeah, this guy is a bad person. Something weird to consider is that homophobic people might fly under people's radar if they don't act this way. Not related to this story but it popped into my mind while thinking about this story. And if you say that all homophobic people are like this, just remember that most of these stories are from people who don't hide it or do a bad job at hiding it. There is even a Critcrab one where the guy was (base on what we're told from OP's secondhand knowledge) like that on Facebook but not at the table at all, so the DM and other players bully him out of the campaign (with the excuse that he was violent and would have beat them up if they talked to him, which makes no sense considering that being made uncomfortable should also make him violent). Sorry for the rant, that story just angers me.

I want to see the "lawful good" fighter (not paladin) be arrested for breaking the law and performing evil against an NPC. "What?! I never did that! I treat every NPC we meet with honor and dignity!" "Dude. Your squire is an NPC. You abuse him at every turn, and you DEFINITELY break the law with your treatment of him." "But that doesn't count. He's MY SQUIRE! That makes him my SLAVE! I can treat him however I WANT!" "Nope. Not a slave. Slavery is illegal. But you just claimed him as your slave, which makes you a slaver, which is both illegal and evil, which makes you Chaotic Evil. Sooooo... That's a thing." And then see how being Chaotic Evil works in this game world. Although, out-of-game shenanigans should not be punished in-game. They should be dealt with out-of-game. If he's a perfectly fine person out of game, then treat him well out of game. If he is only horrible in-game, then he gets IN-GAME consequences, including arrest, imprisonment and execution. Sometimes, good people play bad characters. It can be very cathartic. HOWEVER, either you play in a game without consequences ("Come on, guys! Let's have an evil murder-hobo run! It will be FUN!), or you play a game with consequences, and the PCs, good, evil, or neutral, have to face ALL the consequences. A good person playing an evil character facing consequences can be a blast. It can be cathartic, too. "Hehehe... I'm going to create a copy of my pointy-haired boss, but as if he was a dwarves fighter. With a pointy-horned helmet. Hehehehee... Let's see him get his comeuppance!" Actually, that sounds like a REALLY fun thing to do. Only, PLEASE, if you're going that route (I'm going to be SOOOOO STUPID, as well as malicious!) tell the other players first, so that they can either play as your also-evil party, or else play as the put-upon good guys who are STUCK with you for plot reasons, and have to spend all their time and energy cleaning up your messes. I mean, DM Dilbert could be a BLAST, but ONLY if everyone knows what they're getting into and AGREES to it AT THE START. Also, if anyone wants to do that game, I volunteer for Secretary With a Crossbow, the Rogue who knows how to get stuff done, but only for the people she actually LIKES. Alice, with the Fist of Death, should definitely play a Monk.

I mean D&D Dilbert. And I am now going to approach my group to see if someone wants to DM that for a one or two shot game. Or maybe a long-term "campaign," where we can do one-shots now and then, when we're in the mood for mass hysteria. Maybe just quarterly sessions. Actually quarterly sounds good. It's very "business world" to deal with the dreaded QUARTERLY REPORTS. And of course, End of Year reports, right when you're trying to wrap up for Christmas. The quests are "I need you to get those numbers for the quarterly report!" And then, you have to do favors for the various department heads, before they will release their data to you. That's actually the only "quest" you need. Every time. The individual favors necessary will change, but the quest is the same, every time. Hehehe. Even if they say no, I can have so much fun, in my own head, imagining it all. Dogbert, of course, will be the DM. Not, "The DM will play the role of the NPC Dogbert." Nope. DOGBERT WILL BE THE DM. Complete with crown and scepter. OMG! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME ARRANGE THIS GAME!!!

First Story: Ehhhhhhh, if the player is bullying an NPC, I don't really think that's too huge of a deal. However, when it comes to physically abusing the squire, that should have consequences, such as causing the squire to second-guess his employment, and considering that the squire wasn't a character with actual stats, a way to resolve this would've been for the fighter, when abusing the squire, to accidentally kill him. Maybe going a little hard on him during training and beating him unconscious, but he doesn't fully recover or fails his death saves. Teach the fighter directly that being a piece of shit to their underling can have actual consequences. Or just have the kid run off in the night with the fighter's equipment. Either way.

@@epsilon-eleven I mean, yeah, but if it's the only character he's treating that way and he's treating everyone else respectfully, I could see it being chalked up as sort of a character vice, like this is the one person the fighter looks down on in the world and thus treats him like absolute garbage. I'm not saying it's right, but it'd be worse if he was treating other characters that way. If the player needs an in-game punching bag to feel good about himself, at least it's one he made up for himself instead of the DM's or other players' characters. It almost seems like the guy knew he was toxic, and decided to try to mitigate it by making up a character to act that way towards. Again, it's not right or cool to act that way; I'm just saying it's not as bad as it could have been, and if that's what someone needs to have in order to get something out of D&D, maybe they shouldn't play.

Intro Story: There are dark humors, there are light humors, however here's one for y'all: "How I know anybody can be non-binary? They can go from zero-to-ten *really* quick with a very bad joke!" First Story: I have a severe dislike for adults bullying children. It is less so with kids on kids (still severe) because nobody spelled it out to the bullies that what they are doing is wrong. I would have gutted the fighter in his sleep for bullying his squire. If I have a squire and some dumbarse adult is bullying them, ya bet yer arse that I would gladly switch from oath of redemption to oath of conquest very quickly as both mama bear and papa bear come to play as one paladin. Second Story: _to "see if this wouldn't be too violent for the little guy." I guess Power Rangers and He-Man are part of the ban list? Apparently the _little guy_ did not catch the memo that no violence is a rule while the mom did not enforce it on her son; _CLASSIC "rules for you and not for us!" trope._ E-gad-zooks! If there's going to be an overflow, stand yer ground because full-is-full! Can't fill the pot with more water without it spilling over the electric stove! Furthermore; they did not sign up for the event, they do not get to play. Events are organized so we would have paper trails incase of problems like theft and lawsuits. Funny how the the mom and wizard made their own social dirt nap. Third Story: Well. Talk about not reading the room; I was thinking that perhaps a mix up in expectations, but then the combat slough was the red flag. If we look at different shows like the ones I mentioned before in the second story, the combat happened in one to three sequences. I've been in a slough where each combat would take up to an hour, which led to dungeons taking 1-2 sessions per floor. While I understand that a lot of the game's mechanics are more for combat simulations, if you had cake too regularly, you're gonna get sick of it to the point that ya rather have Styrofoam cups to get the sweetness out of yer mouth than to see another fondant icing-covered pastry good. Fourth Story: Riiight. (plays a tune) It is not unusual to be loved by anyone! It is not unusual to have such a great time! What is unusual is him cr-ey-ey-ey, "he should've died!" (stops the tune) OP's not weird, the problem player is a self-projecting weirdo with values too old to work here. Yeah...seriously? Murdering a fictional character because he did not like a character? Then again, I'm guilty of still having thoughts about doing that when I know betrayal is right around the corner. Thankfully, I chose to pick up gamemastering so I can justify kicking out problem players for being uncivil savages that hates those outside their own tribes and try to strongarm players into a dictatorial slavery (aka bullies and abusers).
