Man-Baby Bullies His FIANCE for... Roleplaying in D&D?! (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

I've got a big trip coming up and I'm hard at work making some videos in advance! It's going to be a busy few weeks, but that's the gig. Also, it's a neat excuse to catch up on Critical Role's Calamity. Win win.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

The edgelord in the first story was incredibly frustrating because if you actually want to be untraceable having a series of fake IDs would work a lot better than not having an ID in a world where everybody has one a large part of being untraceable is blending in

@@bloodleafz That's certainly a way of looking at it, but you disregard the part where the GM DIDN'T say the guards could not be bribed, just that he'd need a lot of gold, nor did he tell the player in question he couldn't do any of the things he wanted. Fact is, Mr. Broody McEdgelord made the situation more complicated and frustrating than it needed to be simply because he didn't want to play by the GM's rules that he agreed to.

The DM certainly made it difficult and risky but not impossible. And I feel like that makes sense. The IDs are important, that's how the world is built, so it makes sense that a larger city would have more security to make sure, no one without an ID can get in. Therefore it raises the difficulty if you are trying to avoid showing it.

For the DM stressed about ruling, I understand some of them (specially the kid behavior checking if he forgot his previous ruling), but the one asking what would happen if the object disappeared after consumption or if he could spawn oil, I think that's a pretty normal thing to ask and expect a ruling for because it can change your fight strategy and it's good to fight with creativity and not only go around punching things. It seems like he's 1) just not fit for DMing or 2) focusing too much on balance or the consequences of his rulings instead of just saying "no you can't" or "yup, seems right" based on if it seems possible enough. There will always be moments where you forget you gave a player an item and they use it in a ridiculous way that changes everything, but that's fun too sometimes.

Edgelord in the first story, he has the typical problem that makes the edgelord a red flag, that is they just want their badass power fantasy Ultimate Ninja Assassin. They care not for the underground intrigue and various nuances that go into functioning as an Assassin or Ninja (you know, a lot of the stuff that actually makes them interesting) and just want to skip to the part where they are stabbing and slicing their way through scores of enemies in a "crimson tempest of death!" Otherwise they are just "that skilled" that as long as they wear the blue pajamas they are hidden, even in broad daylight. All they want is the fantasy of being that badass without any of the work to make them convincingly skilled or dangerous.

2nd Story: Honestly, most of the questions the players asked seemed tame and understandable, and while I understand being stressed, it seems like all player clarification questions are just being lumped together. There are rules for using skill+abilities outside standard parings literally as part of the basic rules. I think the most common example I've come across is Strength in place of Charisma when making intimidation checks. Just say use wisdom for intimidation and move on . That said I think this is more a mismatch of expectation between Player-DM, and, imo, more importantly DM-System. DnD 5e is designed in such a way that DM rulings are cornerstone of it. It is heavily edge cases in practice and a lot more fuzzy then high crunch systems where all rules questions have specific and referenceable direct answers. In reality jumping off a roof onto someone, the ground, a pile of rugs, and into water have different outcomes. 5e specifically gives basic rules for falling than relies on the DM to figure out how those rules apply to each situation if at all. My suggestion would be switching to a different system, Maybe a much more rules heavy or rules light system would be in order for that DM. As 5e is literally built for the opposite of what they want.

At least half of what he described were perfectly reasonable inquiries, and I was honestly rather irritated that half of this guy's grievances with their party seemed to stem from just... not wanting to actually be a DM. DMs have to make interpretations on rulings sometimes. That's just the fact of the matter. And this guy talked like it's the end of the world for him to bother to think critically during an *improv game.* I honestly think this person needs to just... not be a DM?

My favorite thing about DMing is being able to make these calls on the fly and compromising with players. If your ruling has consequences later on, you as a DM have the power to change it later on. I agree that the best solution for this DM is switching to a stricter, less open-ended system. From the examples given, it's hard to put a lot of blame upon the players.

When making my Tempest Cleric, I asked if I could take thunderclap as a cantrip for backstory reasons instead of sacred flame and my DM approved. I asked later if I could switch out control water and insect plague from the subclass spells for storm sphere and control winds which are similar enough but fit the subclass more thematically. He dreamed of the day he'd have enough weaponsmithing skill to repair the sword, and then it would become a powerful weapon that would basically "level up" with him. He called the sword Grandmother, in her honor. And it would end up actually containing the spirit of his grandmother once I'd made it sentient. But at level 1, his prized possession was this mechanically worthless thing that just took up a solid chunk of weight in his carrying capacity. I figured that was a small price to pay for the guarantee that I'd have just the weapon I wanted when I took the feat (and could take my Fighter bonus feats with that in mind). And I liked my character concept, too; it's a shame that campaign petered out after a couple of sessions.

Story #2: Honestly, I see both sides of this, and we kinda had this with one of our DMs: as a DM, I'm very much into rule of cool, homebrew and coming up with non-standard ways of doing things, but he wasn't. He preferred the rigidness of rules, it made his job easer. Can't blame him for it. He tried running Pathfinder 2e and instantly fell in love - we enjoy it a lot too! It's a great system, and is a lot more rigid and in-depth with the rules! Perfect for a DM that likes a strong rule base! Story #3: Ok, real talk, I don't think this is THAT bad. Hear me out - yeah, ok, daughter of Orcus is fuckin' edgy. And I really like OP's suggestion of needing the items to be re-enchanted, or performing some sort of ritual to restore them to their former glory. Could even look at Critical Role's vestiges for similar rules - each ritual unlocks more power in each item. And a player having clear ideas for what they'd want for their character feels like it'd be helpful to the DM! I understand the DM's trepidation in saying "What if he tries to "accidentally" use the item?" but, like, you're the DM. You can say no, lmao. As far as "RPG horror stories" go, this one was pretty tame.

7:46 As someone who is currently playing a Creation Bard, I do admit there is a lot of "ask your DM" stuff about the subclass. That being said, I try to be courteous and discuss these sort of questions out of game so that my DM isn't blindsided by an odd question. It's one of those subclasses that benefits from the player and the DM having a good rapport. I'm getting the vibe that OP in this story is the only DM in the group and he's experiencing a bad case of burnout, partially because his DMing style clashes with the player’s styles. Hell, avoiding burnout was one of the reasons why my old group always rotated our games and took turns DMing.

As a DM and especially as a player, I *try* and make sure 'gray area' rule interpretation calls are done ahead of time if at all possible. I.E. the Echo Knight's echo. About 50% can be intercepted before they become a 'table call', the ones that are 'table calls' I make it clear it is the 'rule' for this session for further inspection later on if warranted/needed. No one is perfect, nor do I expect anyone to be so, so lets not kill the game by stopping it over minor stuff.

Intro: I mean, it's OP's character. The DM could revive him, but OP needs to agree to it for things not to be awkward. The Most Confusing Edgelord: I'm guessing Edge wanted to remain "anonymous" and "free from societal restraints." Problem is that he already agreed to the ID system of this campaign. Why he didn't just not join I have no idea. I think there's a mentality of "riding it out" to "fix" campaigns or such nonsense. DM is Feeling the Stress: As Crispy said, a conversation is needed. OP may need to learn how to improvise, the players are trying to be rules lawyers (the ones in Puffin's video on Rule Lawyers). And for the 3.5 stuff, I can try to explain. The buckler in 3.5 can indeed be used with a two-handed weapon (and two-wielding), but only gives a +1 ac and a -1 attack, something the players likely "forgot." It's not in 5e anyway, and the DM sounds like he's using RAW for the most part. The turn order I'm less certain of, since while you can delay your turn (move after someone else), that tends to be with party members and not a reaction. OP at Level 1: Sounds less "min-max" and more "OP buffs/stats." Yeah, starting with magic items that strong, and three no less (there's a reason a straight-up damage buff to spells is usually restrictive) is way too much. It's one thing to be on a quest to restore the magic of an item, it's another just for them to be easily unlocked. Him being that edgy doesn't help matters. The "That Guy" Fiance: Wow, he sound unpleasant to play with. People need to not play with those they can't kick. Don't play with loved ones if you can't prevent and/or stop favoring them either.

I've been thinking about magical loot actually. I've been toiling with/for my DM over a set of Ultimate Magic Items for the party. I confess, some of it was because "I wanted cool thing" but it was also "Hey, why not let the whole party get cool thing?" We're playing Curse of Strahd which has a few specific powerful items and I figured "What the hey" and designed a set of homebrew magic items. Then I got annoyed with their design and redesigned them so that they were more balanced. Then I realized I accidentally increased the power level of the end game party and submitted a request one magic item get upgraded to another similar but more powerful item down the line. None of my design issues are core to this story, but its been an interesting ride. The DM and I are on the same wavelength that A: These are intended to be *end game* items, which means no one gets their unique artifact until we approach the end of the campaign. and B: The items are intended to be locked behind certain quests, exploration, or the completion of personal storylines. At least mine is, I love treasure but the powerful stuff has no value if it wasn't earned, yknow? I found that this is also how I DM really, I might give out a few average magic items but the output is generally medium-low because I want to give out "good" magic items, not tons of magic items.

Cold open: awkward. Let a PC go out one a bitch if that's what the player wants! 1. Funny thing, creating a false identity with a paper trail is one of the assassin subclass's features. It's absolutely pointless because it takes a significant downtime investment and doesn't accomplish anything that expertise in deception, performance, and disguise kits wouldn't, but it's there. I guess the edgelord wanted to make it even more redundant than it already is? 2. I negotiate with my GM about rules for the sake of flavor all the time (between sessions, not during), and I think this player sounds obnoxious. 3. Interesting premise, and I kind of like the idea of starting with high- ends magic items you can't use until you reach a certain level, but... yeah, be careful not to cut yourself on all that edge. 4. The character might have been a paladin but the player was a barbarian.

If a player of mine wanted to start with ONE singular magical item that their character doesn't know how works and couldn't use until they discover its secrets, I would most likely allow it under the explicit condition that such a discovery will ONLY occur in a situation where they could have otherwise received that item as loot. No amount of independent research or accidental fiddling around by their character will unlock the powers of the item until I say it is time. Functionally speaking, the item wouldn't even really be magic until the power awakens. If a player wanted THREE such items though, I would tell them bluntly to pick one to start with and I'll consider allowing them to acquire the others later in some narratively appropriate manner. Maybe even allow them to have previously owned the extra items, but they got stolen by bandits prior to the campaign, allowing me to work the recovery into a dramatic encounter.

Definitely have them start with just one, if that many. One thing that came to mind about "couldn't use until they discover it's secrets" would be to give them the magic item under the condition that only you as the DM knew what the secret to using it was. And then make them up yourself without the player knowing so they can't "accidently" figure it out. Research could be handled as part of the loot for a quest. The quest giver knows something, a part of the secret not all of it, and will tell the player if the player helps the party fulfill the quest in full. That could keep the player a little more interested in actually participating instead of going off on their own.

Story 2 reminded me of a player I had. Definitely another case of mild annoyance, but still, not fun. He was brand new to the game and any time I stated the rules of the game that restrict him on something, such as offhand attacks only adding 1 attack as a bonus action on your turn rather than 2x the amount you already have (he was a fighter who dual-wielded scimitars. Cool fun concept, I love fighters and dual-wielding is real fuckin cool) and he argues by insinuating, because he read the fighter section of the PHB, that i was not only wrong, but he knew more about the game's rules than me. Now, I haven't memorized 100% of the rules, but I've DM'ed for 5 years and really studied them as best I can. I know how offhand attacks work. Now, new players learning the rules is great, and it's no problem if they think they know a thing and are wrong, that's 100% okay, what ISN'T okay is reading a couple pages of a class in PHB and then getting all arrogant, saying you know the whole entire game better than the experienced DM.

As someone who played during the 1st and 2e AD&D era, I understand the Lawful Good part. But back then, Paladins were supposed to be chivalrous knights, based on an idealized version of the medieval monastic orders. So they disdained all worldly possessions besides the equipment they needed, having to tithe and eventually donate *everything* to their temple. They also protected the weak and the innocent, and always went first into combat, willing to sacrifice themselves for the protection of the party. As well, good means being merciful and not wanting to take life or cause pain unnecessarily, although destroying evil was fine. If this guy wanted to play an old school paladin, he should act like one. OOC the way he treated his fiancee, fellow players, and the game was inexcusable, but that has been pointed out by others.

The idea that every single person from any of the extremely disparate backstories, cultures, places, etc. would have a standardized, universal piece of paper that tells anyone from anywhere who they are is pretty dumb. The dude either needs to play a far more rule heavy system (aka not DnD) or to take a few improv classes and work on his mental state a bit. A lot of questions were rather easy to think of, 3 or 4 seconds at maximum for 90% of them, and the few that weren't could easily be solved on the side after a minute of chatting or so. There were one or two, I'll admit, that were just horrible, but otherwise OP just needs to git gud lol. Level 1 God: oh please god no. Minmaxxers arent the worst, nor are people that want magic items early on, hell I find them kinda fun when challenging my DMing on a bigger scale, or when I'm in a party with them and a cool DM. After 10 years of DMing, I've found the ID thing only really works in a sci-fi setting in authoritarian regimes, in a fantasy setting it can be done but you will run into problems a lot, such as "how does this guard 100miles away from where I got my ID know if my ID is real?" Case and point the DM was willing to give the player a fake one to use so clearly there are people who can make fake ones that pass the grade and fool guards. I think the DM missed the point that the player wanted to buck the ID system in the world to try and be unique, additionally in the real world we already have to do this to some extent in every country world wide "Papers please" is a real thing even in the US to an extent, it comes off gimmicky in a fantasy setting, hell I was asked if something similar existed in one of my 5e campaigns and laughed it off with a "Hell no!", it's pointless in a fantasy world especially with forgery kits being a thing. There is no way to ensure they are real to make it seem possible unless every ID is enchanted uniquely to that person and every authority figure has a magically enchanted item to detect the ID's enchantment, and at that point the bigger question is how the fantasy economy can possibly support this system, it could work but in my mind only if the fight between good and evil already happened and good lost, the evil overlords have this system in place to control the population and magic users are forced to create these enchanted ID's or the bureaucratic apparatus is so vast it's the equivalent of a 21st century government bureau. We play fantasy games to escape reality not pretend we are in a medieval version of our Statist world. In closing while no one can tell a DM how to run their worlds, the world should at least make sense and be internally logically consistent. No bad ideas, not a bad DM, not a bad player, just a bad combo of DM world style and Player character style choices.

My game might be a little unbalanced because when my Players ask me if they can do something out of the standard rules (like taking a spell from another spell list because it would fit) I usually allow it. It works at my table because I play with close friends that are chill and we talk to each other when something feels unfair. Additionally, my games are designed to be less strict about the rules as long as it results in fun roleplay and encounters. My player once asked if they could use thaumaturgy to inspire two people instead of one as a bard (effectively only spending one bardic inspiration), and I thought it was a really cool and creative idea! I don't allow everything of course and if there is something powerful they want (adopting a Zombie dog) they will have to accept some consequences (the dog can turn against them when it takes damage, and in rare cases even turn other people into Zombies that the party will have to fight). Yes, the zombie dog is a thing in my current campaign XD

I also have to add, that I do understand the Stressed DM's feelings at least a little bit xD I created a homebrew world that is flying and even before Session 1, the players were talking about what would happen if you shove someone over the edge. I should have expected this, to be fair, and it was quite a fun conversation XD Also, Players will always try to take advantage of your rulings or try to find a way to gain an advantage that might not exactly be by the book or in-character but if you have great players, it stays at that: trying and seeing what the DM rules. In most of those instances, my players joke about it rather than making it an earnest question anyway.

12:20 - I agree that it's a part of the DM's role to make edge case rulings, but I think that's not at all the same as what the OP described in his story. There's a difference between a player occasionally asking about the specifics of a contextual aspect of something they are doing just so they have a better understanding, and then there's players constantly looking for win button loopholes and transferred gotcha moments (but if I can do x with y, like you said before, surely that means I can reverse the polarity and endless gold flies out of my ass, right?), In effect they are intentionally compromising the story flow and suspension of belief to tediously pick crumbs of the floor in the hope that eventually they'll be able to make a cake out of them, if they find enough. Imagine the Kung Fu training fight scene of The Matrix (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mJymsMmResLFnps.html), but instead of Neo being stunning into silence at Morpheus's reiteration of a basic principle of the Matrix with the coolly delivered line, "... you think that's air you're breathing?", Neo instead responds with, okay, so if I'm not actually breathing air because this is all virtual, but I feel like I am breathing air, can I fake breath more virtual air and make myself grow, like puff up in size? Some fish do that, right, so I should be able to do it too? And could I burp it out again and make like a little tornado to knock my enemies off their feet for a bit so I smack them with Kung Fu while they are down? What happens if I breath fake air and ... At that point Morpheus would interrupt Neo to excuse himself for a 'bathroom break', log out of the training Matrix walk over and yank Neo's interface jack out and tell the crew to dump his body out the door so they can keep looking for 'The One'. The problem with edge case rulings is that they have to be asked and answered in good faith, as the part of the social compact of playing the game, as in; we are all here to have fun and share an adventure in a mutually imagined world. What this OP is describing is players acting in bad faith (though it's possible that some, or all of them, might not actually realise they are behaving contra wise to the spirit of role playing). If you drill down far enough things are always going to get pretty hazy, because it's fantasy, that's kind of the point. Dragons don't exist and magic isn't real and it's unreasonable to expect a GM to somehow manage a perfect connection between the infinite variables of the real world and the even more infinite variables of imagined worlds. What the players are doing in this story is the opposite of rule lawyering, which is also not good as it creates the same problem at both ends of the scale, which is that it is players interrupting the flow of play for an imagined advantage. They are effectively forcing the DM to be a constant rule lawyer, except for rules that don't exist, with they hope that they can force a mistake that they can 'legitimately' exploit for their advantage.

15:36 maybe is my personal opinion but giving loot like candies can make it feel worthles. Like if your players find new items every time than what's the point of keeping it. I think that magical items should be very rare but also very suefull

My solution for edgy characters not wanting to share a name is to call them FluffKid McQuishbottom or similar until they provide a better alternative

Isn't Orcus' thing, aside from being a lazy bum, a general dislike of life? I just don't see him as being the offspring type, since that would mean adding to something that he is not that big a fan of.

To be fair, Intimidation not having the option to scale with STR is stupid. You are this 7 feet tall Goliath Berserker and you can't make a peasant scared, because you have 6 Charistma is beyond silly.

That is actually an option in the 5e rulebook, mixing stats and skills to fit the story. Unfortunately most players, DMs, and maybe even creators forget that.

I think the DM in the DM feeling the Stress story sounds like a boring railroader honestly compleat lack of self awareness. And just saying in story 3 the dude specifically said the items can’t activate by accident.

The stressed DM sounded less like a railroader and more like a rules lawyer.

Second dude just sounds like he hates the position of being a DM. Ruling/deciding how spells interact or what a spells limits are when the book description is vague. Like that's the whole game unless you're trying to run straight rules as written and railroad the party through a prewritten campaign. I understand how begging or whining about the game breaking requests they are definitely trying to cheese the dm and after being talked to if continued I'd straight up ignore them. But yeah sounds like text book lazy dm.
