Insane Player LOSES IT Over Magic and... Women in D&D(?) (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Hey guys! I hope you all had a great New Year. I ended 2021 with sea shanties, pong, and Lord of the Rings. Basically, it was perfect. But bliss must fade and work must return. I hope you guys enjoy the fruits of my renewed labor.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

The Warlock in the first story didn't even give any real criticism here. All he did was be a neckbeard about how the merchants were women, childishly insulted the DM's hair of all things, and was a general dick about it! I hope OP can move on and have a better time without this guy. It sounded like the rest of the party was super awesome and was engaged in the story.

The trick was not to play as 'Chaotic Stupid'. it was *amazing* how often my character got the party to do what she wanted (pretty blatantly evil stuff) by making subtle suggestions and playing off the other character's personalities so it seemed like the course of action my character wanted was all their idea all along.

When people think up overpowered builds, they can't take it when the flaw in their build is exposed. Yes an Aarakocra that is slept or knocked prone while flying is going to take a heavy hit when they meet the ground. I've played an Aarakocra moon druid before, and was with an understanding with the DM that I'd limit the abuse of flying; since flying wasn't a big part of that build to begin with wildshape being their main thing and wildshape being prohibited from taking a form that can fly until level 8, at which point any druid can use wildshape to fly.

The thing that kills me about the second story is that the paladin's innate distrust of the OP makes no sense, at all, and he did nothing to explain his distrust in the slightest. to play devil's advocate. There are paladin oaths that have nothing to do with trusting the group in their tennants. Conquest and vengence don't swear to any such things. the former believes wholly in might makes right and can swear to champion archdevils. and the latter specifically swears "by any means necessary. " in order to defeat the greater evil. it's really only the Watchers Oath the specifically mentions Loyalty. a lot of oaths caution the paladin to not let themselves betray their oaths because of the actions of those they currently ally with and suggest severing ties should their party decide to stray too far from their own beliefs.

I've been playing D&D a long, LONG time (started in 1988 with Basic D&D, Classic Red Box Set) and I have seen this a LOT. Many people just don't know how to play evil characters with subtlety. They want to go right for the "I want to kill all of my fellow PCs" style of evil, which is very self destructive. I realize that the player was planning on playing the long game and EVENTUALLY turning on the party once his character had amassed enough power to become the BBEG, which is a clever idea. Unfortunately he couldn't resist playing the character without behaving suspiciously to anyone who might be watching, which is what really screwed him up. He needs to learn that the best villains are the ones who can hide in plain sight. Look at all of the serial killers who had managed to evade capture for years at a time. They act totally normal in their day to day lives, often with wives, children, friends, and families. Ted Bundy seamed so normal that his friends, family, and neighbors held a "Free Ted" rally the first time he was arrested on suspicion of the recent murders and disappearances. On the other hand, Ed Gein was "The Town Weirdo" long before he ever killed anyone. So after two women went missing, his house was one of the first places the police checked. So in D&D terms, you should try to be Ted Bundy and not Ed Gein.

I had my own horror story of a player derailing a campaign because they secretly intended to "become the villain," and while I don't think the idea itself is impossible, you gotta walk a really fine line with it; and more importantly, communicate with your DM and players. I'm sure these players think it'd be a fun and clever surprise, but all you're really doing is messing with the work your DM is putting in and agitating the rest of your party.

As a newer dm, I’m usually open to concepts that can be evil or dark. I do tell them they have to work with the party though, not against it. If they can’t think of a reason to do so, then change concept and I can help them out, as can other players who might tell you what their characters are. Course, even this can be a little rough. The game I run has a Rogue Kenku who was CN until he was Perma-Cursed to be LE. He can be a tad abrasive but the party does let him jnow (ooc) if he should tone it down, and he does! However, when we started, I had a player who was a Paladin. LN or CN, can’t recall, who was my dm for Pathfinder. He quit because he couldn’t find a way to make his broody character lighten up, even when I and the party gave him ample opportunities to do so. When I mentioned the curse, he snapped and said “I knew that damn bird was Evil”, and I clarified that it waa the curse that made him evil (a thing that haooened AFTER the paladin left). Yeah, I have since left his game as a player do to how he handled being a player under me, not just there, but in a Starfinder ine shot I ran to let everyone (myself included) learn the system a bit, bringing iut extra rules that I wasn’t implementing since it was for higher level play, and constantly stealing attention so I couldn’t answer other players who had questions. Not to mention how he has run things in his own game that ultimately have me frustrated and thinking- No pathfinder is better than annoying/uncomfortable pathfinder.

Intro: I wonder how he thought it was going to end. All I can say is don't post NSFW in SFW channels, especially if it's illingal or immoral. It's not that hard. Session "sUCKs" Because of... Women and Magic: Oh, this story. As Critcrab said, kicking this guy out was a great decision. He's a form of instigator, one that's quite abusive. Reminds me of the last video where the guy switched between nice and cruel way too easily. I think his plan was to whittle down the DM's self-esteem to be able to walk all-over him, as we've head in other horror stories where a player takes control away from the DM for their own power trip. Raging at Simple Death: I guess that he went with a build he thought was OP to avoid his "perfect" character from dying. Wonder if he wanted the DM to use the monsters to their fullest to feel powerful, or just half-heart agreed with the other three in the hope that the DM doesn't "target" him and his character. But I WANTED to Kill Everyone: I wonder if it was a Malison Yuan-ti (humanoid with snake heads) or an Abomination (scales all over and a tail instead of legs). Neither of them have player stats, by the way. Either way, this guy seemed to not understand how D&D works, and gives good evil characters a bad name. If you make an evil character, always make them work with the group, from wanting to be in a group for self-preservation, seeing them as a way to reach their end-goal, or uses them to hide in between their crimes. You don't even need to be evil 24/7. You can like the party and not try to get them killed. Even killers have someone/something they love. Leaving the Party to Due: Reminds me of the story with the bard trying to kill the new player because "they have enough players already." I wonder in the motive was similar as well. Funny enough, I also played a skeptical paladin, though this was a one-shot and at worst, she let the other two party members use the translation worms that allowed them to understand goblin so she wouldn't have to. Can't say I'm hopeful this story will have a happy ending.

First story: Yeah, sounds like that warlock was just there to be antagonistic and act like an asshole. DM should have him run a game to see what he would do with fantasy elements in a fantasy world. Third story: Never fun to have an antagonistic PC in the party who's working towards being a BBEG, even though that would be more of the DM's call than anything. The DM has a story in mind with a villain or antagonistic force planned out, more than likely; he's not going to make a campaign about stopping Tiamat from destroying the world or whatever, and then suddenly change it to make it actually be about Billy's made-up cult god at the end. Very much a main character syndrome sufferer, but in the form of an antagonist, which isn't something you see very often. His idea of being the true villain of the story was supposed to supercede even the DM's eventual endgame. Good call on having him get kicked.

I’ve had this idea for an evil character but it would a lot of willing participation and collaboration to do: so essentially the idea is that you are a warlock (but it can be amended for any class). But the main idea is that someone else in the party is a Paladin or anyone with some type of authority over law and order and their order who has captured you (the evil character) has determined that they need your help for the task at hand and have struck a deal that will delay or cancel you execution if you succeed, though really the task is meant as a s*oxide mission anyways. Your character has an enchantment on them that can be triggered by the Paladin if you get out of line and turn on the party. This enchantment is basically a Hold Person spell that you can’t make a roll against, it just automatically succeeds when triggered. If the DM or players want to spice it up it could be an Insta-kill. My idea that my evil character in this situation would eventually warm up to the party and genuinely have a change of heart and view them all as not just Comrades in arms, but friends. I would want to have them sacrifice themself to save the party if possible or at least be willing to. That’s my idea, it’s not super unique, but if anyone wants to use it I would be happy you take it and make it your own. I don’t really get to play TTRPGs because I’m too much of an kid coward to look for groups but I do still like coming up with character ideas

My evil character is just self-centered. In a Greek Mythology campaign setting, I'm playing a Neutral Evil Siren. The character is a bard, because siren. Self-centered and sees no inherent issue with killing people, vengeful, and vain, not necessarily intent on it either. BUT, the party is all good. With the lawful good member pulling her into the party. She is fascinated by the good characters and sees it as a role to act. As well, the characters all have an epic quest or motive. My character wants to become a God, interested in the fame, legacy, and immortality. So she is interested in acting the role of a hero and working with the good guys to achieve that. I think I eventually want her to become neutral aligned. The good characters just teach her that her way of thinking is wrong, but never fully good cause Greek Mythology. But I've been talking it through with the other players so they know.

I respect that everyone involved seemed to be on the road to resolving things peacefully at the end of that last story, and I hope they did/do continue on that path, but holy shit, that paladin -- if the DM doesn't have Thor revoke his powers for that stunt, then they've both failed roleplay.

Considering that the DM managed to convince both players to stay in the last story, I personally also would have considered a rollback in his place. In that entire dungeon sequence it is pretty clear that OOC behavior bled into the IC behavior and vice versa, so I can't help but wonder if dealing with the unfortunate consequences that resulted from it could create further arguments or animosity. Retconning from the place when things went to hell, on the other hand, would just remove the elephant in the room.

One time my character dying actually made it easier for the party to escape the dungeon we were in, cleric just scooped up her body into a bag of holding while the player declared she no longer counted as a being for the dimension door spell, but was now inventory weight. After a few shenanigans to get the needed materials he brought her back to life easy peasy.

If I was the DM of that Paladin story, I would have him them with this: "As you exit from the Dimension Door, the sky darkens as you and the Fighter feel something fly so close by your heads that any closer would've caved a face in, followed by a deafening thunderclap. Dread sets in as you turn around and see a large crater, with Mjolnir itself embedded in the center. A chill runs up your character's spine as they realize this is Thor's idea of warning shot." Because really, Thor doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who suffers Oathbreakers gladly. Stray from your oath once? He might give you an indirect, if dramatic, warning. Go full Oathbreaker after that? Congrats, you're about to experience what the Giants deal with on a daily basis.

Honestly, thanks for covering the Yuan Ti horror story. I've been meaning to gauge how far is too far for a character. I wanted to go full neutral evil on a warlock who wants to cause the apocalypse but scrapped the idea because I don't want to curbstomp my friends' fun. That and I don't really like to play betrayal arcs. So after a bit of revamps, I made them to be a chaotic neutral warlock. He assumes their patron craves the apocalypse of his dystopian dimension. (In reality, patron doesnt care and is more obsessed with watching however the world turns.) So while in another alternate dimension with the party and other NPCs, he's just going to vibe while studying more about causing his world's apocalypse -- he'd mean no harm to the party and may actually change his goals once he either finds out about his patron or values his friends too much. So yeah, I just want to say that I think you can still have arguably evil goals but make your character flexible to the social setting and the party.

I have seen evil characters work in parties, though my group has been playing together for over a decade so we're all familiar with each other's boundaries when it comes to PVP and betrayal. The evil character never directly targeted other party members to show his petty anger with them, but instead attacked things they had deep connections to, like when the cleric pissed him off the evil character told the cleric he was an ass and quietly went to his room to then go kill a high priest of the cleric's religion and paint some blasphemy around the body.

The DM in the last story should strip the Paladin of his powers or warn him that He is on thin ice for that one. I don't think a god who have him these Powers for sacrificing himself for his friends would accept someone as their champion who leaves his friends and inncoent people back to die while he just teleports to safety. If they resolve it or not the Paladin should at the very least get a warning that this is about to happen. Maybe a thunderous voice of his god appearing in his head, saying something along the lines of "I do not chose cowards and traitors to be my champions. Betray your charge another time and Bring shame to me and I will abandon you, as you abandoned your friends"

Playing an evil character is a fine balancing act. It is certainly not something I would promote a new player going with. You've got to manage party expectations, world expectations, and know how and when you can bend rules to your own advantage. I play evil characters sometimes - though I normally play lawful neutral - and when I do, my characters are usually somewhere in the realm of a sociopath who tends to get very attached to the party. They have favourite people (i.e the party members) and are willing to go to any lengths to protect them to the detriment of all others who get in their way.

I ran a lawful evil character in a good party once. A witch that had become a lawyer by sacrificing her now late husband. She was in an anti-magic, extremely controlling state where the monarch was enacting witch burnings all over and kangaroo courts to get those she just didn't like killed. The party came in to try to oust the monarch and my character agreed because "If this keeps on going it'll be my head that's next to roll." Ultimately I think the trick is having a common goal, and really sticking to LE if you're going to play Evil in a Good party. She would obey the word of her agreements (if not always the spirit) and she'd use magically enforced contracts that placed a Geas on the other party to fulfill their half of the contract once she fulfilled her half. Super fun character but didn't get to play her long.

I was playing a one shot online with me being a male fighter, a female rogue and the dm. Investigating some necromancer"s tower. We ended up on the top of the icy tower fighting whatever the boss was (don't recall) and his minions. Rogue went down and was doing the death save thing. I ran to where she was at near the edge to try to get a healing potion in her and was hit with a gust of wind from a spell. Icy roof, no Osha standards regarding railings around the edge, I rolled a natural 1 on my save and fell the 50 feet. I didn't survive the fall. So tpk. The dm felt bad about it, and both rogue and I (we were all strangers on a pick up game) both unanimously said F feeling bad about it. You ran a great, smart game. It was a short story that didn't have a happy ending for the characters. But NOW you have two new minions to the boss' army that you've got a history with. He perked up and said he could add our failed clearing of the tower to the legend for whoever plays next.

I'm a first-time DM with some first-time players, and we are super-casual players. I told them early on, that they 1) know how to get resurrected (well, Raise Dead, within 10 days of death), and 2) I even gave them a few diamonds for the purpose (which they promptly used to raise some dead civilians. Gotta love these people!). They now know that death is a possibility, and I have even told them that for story reasons, I NEED at least one of them to die sometime, and 2) I will make sure that they can be raised. They're already prepared and know to save every diamond they find. They're ready for it, and death won't be a big deal in this game. Now, in the game we play with my brother as the DM, we are NOT prepared for character death. But, I said, out loud for all to hear, when my PC was in danger, "If I die, I'm planning on X for my next character." My niece looked at me and questioned how I could be so calm about character death. I just shrugged, and said, "It's just a game, after all. And it's not like it would be game over, either. Just make up a new character, and off we go!" I'm SO glad our group (same group for both games - family) is so casual about it. We enjoy it, but it's at least half just for the social get-together, and we "waste" a LOT of game time, just chatting and laughing and joking with each other, and that's OK. FOR US. But also, I never worry about these kinds of things happening, because none of us will take it that seriously. You have to find a group that fits your and your own personality. Want to have a serious game? Find a serious group. Want a casual game? Find a casual group. Chat up your DM BEFORE you start. I think it's funny how a lot of these stories start with the player putting in an application for approval by the DM, but the DM doesn't seem to introduce themselves to the players, at all. A lot of trouble could be avoided, if the DM did so, and then the players could say, "Eh, you might think I'm a good fit for you, but I know myself better than what shows up on that application, and based on your introduction, I think I wouldn't be the best fit for you, so I'm going to not waste anyone's time and pull out, now." I think Session 0 is something you can bring up and do at any point during the campaign, as often as needed, to keep things running smoothly, and fix little bumps along the way. But I also think think that, if you are not already a firmly established group, such a family/friends, who have been interacting together for a long time, either in this game or similar games, or just in general, that a Session 0 is NECESSARY BEFORE the game starts. If you are just meeting people for the first time, NEVER SKIP SESSION 0! Don't just focus on, "The game will be in X setting, and you need to set up your characters to fit X." You need to say, "We'll be a serious/casual/in-between game, and I expect X, Y, and Z. Here are the rules of play AT THIS TABLE. Here is what we find acceptable, not acceptable. If anyone has a problem, here is the process for dealing with the problem, to minimize humiliation and escalation." I'm not saying it's the DM's fault for the players having a melt-down, because his PC died. I'm just saying, in general, that if EVERYONE were up-front about their own personalities, needs, and play-styles, we'd have a lot fewer stories. So, maybe I should be glad they don't, because I do enjoy these stories! Keep 'em comin'!

Final story: Yeah, the DM's an idiot for not looking closer at the "Paladin's" Oath. I don't know any Oath that could be stretched well enough to literally abandon people who have done no wrong to you or anyone you've seen since meeting them to their own death. OP has literally nothing to feel bad about, they failed an important skill check and that happens to literally all of us from time to time, but that in no way lays any culpability on them for the ensuing train wreck. The "Paladin" and his player clearly have some ulterior motive as to why they obviously hate the characters Talon and Fludi, what that motive is? Who knows. Let's do a deeper dive shall we? Thor is Chaotic Good, and his domains are generally Tempest and War. So what could his Oath be? Conquest? Nah, reading the general opener of that tells me Thor would never be into Conquest. It does mention war, yes, but also "well-ordered might". Chaotic Good, order is the antithesis of chaos, so no. If it was Devotion I would've instantly turned him into an Oath-Breaker and booted him from his previously chosen Oath for that behavior. Same with Glory, it promotes camaraderie between people, what the "Paladin" did was definitely not that. Redemption? No. Just no. Can't be Ancients either, mercy, kindness and forgiveness is one of their tenets so that's a non-starter. It's not Crown either, tenets of Law, Loyalty, Courage and Responsibility? I didn't exactly see that in his behavior. Same deal with Watchers. The tenets of Vengeance are a little more ambiguous, but I still don't see how you could turn his behavior into something that would suit them either really. So there you have it, I've examined every official 5e Paladin Oath and I don't see one he could have that would allow him to act that way other than Oath-Breaker. Could it be a homebrew Oath? Sure, but it didn't sound that way from what OP was saying, and even if it was it doesn't much matter. I may not know what Oath the "Paladin" had, but I do have a general idea of Thor's temperament and ideology. Thor wouldn't allow something like that from someone who is literally one of his representatives. Oath-Breaker at best, at worst? Struck dead by Thor himself.

Raging at Simple Death - In a game where resurrections are common as shit. Hmmm. A couple of players in the Cyberpunk game I was running engaged in PVP - A: "You and me. Mano e mano. Right Now!" B: (Eagerly) "Fuckin' Oath!" - I guess that constitutes mutual consent. 😄 (The two characters had long-standing in-game rivalry and mutual dislike.) Challenger wins initiative, attack is a *single* aimed punch to the forehead and, despite negative DM for Called Target, challenger beats defender's Dodge score and hits. Challenger then explains that as the Orbital Crystal cyberarm makes contact with the forehead, the impact triggers a single spike that extends out from between the knuckles, punches a hole through the forehead and brain then quickly retracts into the cyberhand, leaving nothing but a neat hole in the character's head. Rolls damage per spike's specifications. Instant death. In a setting with no hope of resurrection/revival from such a wound. Response from the player of the character that was basically sucker-punched to death: "COOL!! Fuckin' AWESOME!" Utterly rapt that his character "went out in such a cool way". He had deliberately played his character to be generally annoying and actively participated in the in-game "feud" between the characters. IRL, the two *players* got on really well. Y' plays the game, y' takes ya chances. And you don't bitch when the consequences of your character's actions results in the character's death.

I dont know if I agree with the DM claiming it's their story. It's the group's story. A lot of the RPG horror stories I here on KZread can boil down to the DM thinking their telling their story, not facilitating the group's story. Nonconsenting railroading, main characters DMPCs, and sometimes resentment fuels DM vs PC play can be rooted in this mindset.

If it's story two, I think it's more of their story to share on the web as opposed to their story on the table?

I think they meant "that's my rpg horror story" rather than "this is the story of the dnd campaign" since they mentioned browsing the sub in the beginning. But yeah I definitely misunderstood that at first as well XD

Honestly the Yuan-Ti story is probably mostly on the DM, trying to dissuade the player by fucking over the character rather than just being genuine about the scope of the story and just saying "this is not the kind of game I want to run, you can be an evil character but I already have a BBEG"

The 2 rules I never break and never want broken in my party is "never split the party" and "no pvp". Sure, you can grab a PC if you want but no actual combat/ Hp damage. Just not worth it. Pvp also creates resentment between players, intentional or not and that's never fun.

Both of these senerios could make some good RP/plot happen depending on how well it’s handled. Splitting the party could have the characters uncover secrets that would otherwise be left untouched. And as long as everyone knows that the PVP isn’t personal, PVP could lead to character growth and tension. PVP could also create angst and emotional moments if the PVP is forced by narrative (for example a brainwashed pc vs another pc)

Evil players in good parties can work, but yeah, you gotta think about why they won't kill each other. For example, in our game, we have such a character, and our solution was simple. He's greedy and will do anything for money. Including good things. The other, good players literally just pay him off to not do evil things. Sure this could potentially be abused, but none of the good characters care about money enough to care that the evil one gets more money. It's a fun arrangement and makes for interesting escapades. (They're all chaotic too, so that makes things easier lol.)

In regards to the last story, I don't think OP was at fault at all. Would it have been a good idea to cast detect magic on the door or something to try to figure out if it had magical traps? Sure, but it was an honest mistake that really I'm not sure if I'd count as a mistake. It's something the enemies had placed and the player tried their best to approach. As for the emotions running high from OP, it makes 100% sense in game from what happened and I think the olive branch was probably the most OOC and blame I can put on OP. That to me seems more metagamy to try to smooth things over when it isn't their responsibility to do so. This should have been the GM looking to the Paladin and asking if he's sure he wants to do this as having seen OP and Talon's bravery, he'd likely recognize that Thor would see them as valiant warriors and worthy of fighting alongside. I truly think OP did nothing wrong here.
