D&D Egomaniac RAGES When She's Not the Main Character (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

I might make a worldbuilding video this Sunday. Maybe a video on Arcane? Or maybe I'll take that day off. I honestly don't know.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

    Intro story: Sounds like that person was just looking for any excuse to drop OP as a friend. First story: Yeah, that guy sounds lame as hell. Nonchalantly mentioning that you have a kill-list of coworkers to your psychiatrist? That's not a thing people do unless they, as OP described this guy, build their entire persona around being edgy. It's to have the story of "I'm so crazy, I once got fired because my job found out I was going to kill ten people there, and them firing me was the only thing that stopped me from doing it." No one would be impressed by that, and I hope this person is at least in their 20's, cuz if they're doing this shit in their 30's or 40's just to get clout, that's a sad sad life they lead. Second story: Brad sounds awful. Like, I get that some people think that TTRPGs are just "fight things for gold"; that was the basis of old-school D&D, after all. But to be rude to the rest of the group in that way is so uncalled for. And yeah, for someone who's so heavily into combat and hates roleplaying and non-combat situations in TTRPGs, CoC is a super-weird choice for him to want to run; even in Pulp Cthulu, where the player characters are beefier and combat is more like you'd expect coming from D&D, it's still really hard to do combat well in that system. That campaign sounded more like he wanted to write a story, but wanted his friends to make up the characters for it. But it sounds like he learned from his mistakes by the end, which is good. Third story: Sounds like preferential treatment for DM's fiance. Makes sense, since he's a first-time DM and wants to make her happy. However, here's a question the DM should've posed at the start of the campaign to his fiance: "If your character is already world-renowned and super-powerful and rich and famous, what further goal could she accomplish from going on this adventure?" If she can't answer that, then maybe she should play another character, perhaps someone within the monster hunter league's ranks who looks up to the character the wife made and wants to be like her one day. Player characters need goals and aspirations; if your character is already a level 20 badass who owns a guild and a castle and has hundreds of thousands of gold and kills dragons just by looking at them, then nothing that they do will be a challenge. What's the point of playing a character who isn't challenged by anything? Especially if you're playing with a group of new players and low-level characters, and especially if you're low-level yourself; having those kinds of accolades at a low level are nonsense. If you're anywhere from level 1 to 5, you've been adventuring for maybe a few months; you haven't garnered an army and millions of gold at that point (unless you did something to gain all five levels at once). Gotta keep that in mind when making a character for D&D.

    My guess for the intro story is either that the person was trying to manipulate OP into begging them to stay and retconning the character's death, and got mad when they called their bluff, or that they were actually dealing with mental illness and lashed out for no reason as a result. Either way, OP didn't do anything wrong.

    I've played in multiple games with my husband as DM. A few times he's not given my character things that would really help her because he doesn't want the other players to think he's favoring me. The one time my character got a really fancy item, it cost 500% the normal cost and she had to wait three weeks for it. I made a point of telling two of the PCs how much it cost and "I hope it's worth it."

I have an entire map already made out, that has multiple places to go and side quests, along with the main quest line and the BBEG. I just want to get the enemies for each area figured out so it covers everything and hopefully I will have all the basics down. Wish me luck with the improv!! :)

    "Main character syndrome" is definitely something any DM has to be careful about. Even when it's not just blatant favouritism or simping, it can be easy to put more focus on specific players for more mundane reasons. Some players have backstories that fit your campaign more easily, others just take to roleplaying better and are more comfortable being the "face" of the party. But you have to make sure nobody's feeling left out, and that all your players are getting a fair amount of time in the spotlight (if they want it). Communicate with your players, put in that extra effort. And don't tolerate toxic players or egomaniacs in your game, lest you grace the youtube halls of Crispy's Tavern.

  • @AnastasiaTalen
    @AnastasiaTalen2 жыл бұрын

    For the intro story, it sounds to me like the player was struggling with their mental health (hence being so affected by the NPC death) and was hoping that if they told the OP about it, the OP would retcon the NPC death. When the OP accepted what they said at face value and said "Sure, take care of yourself" the player heard that as the OP not caring about their feelings and not caring about whether the player played or not. Obviously, that's not true, but I can see why a player struggling with their mental health at that time could experience the information that way. None of that is OP's fault, and it does sound like the player needs to go take some time/seek appropriate support and resources to help them with that.

    Isekai'd refers to being transported to another world, most times a magical one. It's popular in anime and manga as well as light novels. There's a light novel based on D&D known as Magic User: Reborn in Another World as a Max Level Wizard. The novel itself makes references to older editions of D&D like Basic, Master and Expert. The word Magic User is the previous class name for Wizards. I'm currently reading it and it's a blast. There's an text to speech audio book of it on KZread if you're interested.

    Whenever I see a backstory that's like "World famous hero, slayer of dragons and gods, ruler of kingdoms" I instantly wanna just kick the person, but I work with them to fix that nonsense, funnily enough this seems to happen MORE in campaigns starting at low levels like 1 or 2, less in high levelled beginning campaigns. You'd think only kids and people who've never played D&D before would make stories like this, but I've met quite a few adults who do this, often spouting "Since it's in my backstory, it would make sense for me to start this level 1 game with Zariel's sword and Vecna's hand, any good DM would allow it because they'd easily be able to re-balance combat".

    I actually sometime plan to do a character who's backstory sounds like something of a higher level character but give a good reason why they are now level 1 or 2. Some ideas were a Dwarven Fighter who was a war hero decades ago coming out of retirement,(either out of boredom or to make enough money to rebuild the destroyed tavern he used to run, but make it better than before; hadn't decided) so his skills are rusty and his body is a bit out of shape, Or maybe a powerful Monk who got killed by a mad artificer who proceeded to try to use his spirit to a power essentially a Warforged body so that the Monk would be forced to serve him, but failed to control him. Now the Monk is out in the world on a journey of rediscovery as he tries to relearn his old abilities in a new = body.

I have a hunch that Chrissy and Bobby were having difficulties outside the game and what we see is the fallout of that spilling into the game. Since the D&D community is so huge now, it's actually quite easy to find games, there's literally no excuse to stay in bad games anymore. I know people often feel conflict-averse but honestly just dealing with problems head on and taking care of them is so much more freeing than suffering through a campaign that's not fun anymore. My friends have since made up over the incident….but as of that post it’s hard to say if op and their friend are going through the same experience. Also i LOVE describing scenes and what happens in detail tbh and i run my games as an open world kind of thing where i present potential plot hooks for my players to choose from ofcourse there are consequences for everything like, if they dont take one plot hook another random group of adventurers in my world does or like if they kill an innocent person they will have to deal with the consequences of the guards, etc.

    Background: The main characters in this story are Knight, Hawaiian shirt and me. Why Knight and Hawaiian shirt? I call Knight a knight because that's exactly that what he would have been liked to be in real life. You could say, he was a soul that suffered from being born too late. I call Hawaiian shirt that way, because that was the first thing that came to my mind thinking of a name for the story. He wore these shirts most the time we spent together. There is nothing wrong with that, it's just noticeable. We were classmates and by that time we had been playing D&D 3.0 for a year and had just finished our first campaign. And thought about how it should go on now. Story: This was my second campaign and it ended as fast as it started apart from the long preparation time I put into this character. And I'm not talking about the usual flipping through the books for the ultimate combination of talents, weapons and interpretable rules that make you a POW in powergamer. No, Knight told us after our last campaign, which was a trip around a whole world, the next campaign would be from level 12 to maximum level in a single city (we should write level 12 characters for it). A story with a large portion of role-play content, lots of intrigues, mysteries and fractions that we could win over or become bitter enemies. I loved the idea. RPG has always been much more important to me than fights and until today it is important to me in my games as a game master that most of the fights can also be solved by talking, traps or other things. Depending on the players want that. But I digress. Knight had promised us this role-playing game juggernaut and I was as happy like a child on Christmas morning. I wanted to be part of this story. So I asked Knight what our role would be at the beginning of the campaign. Were we travelers arriving in the city? Were we born in the city? What were the requirements? He answered with one particular sentence which I like to say to my players until today “Write whatever you like, just make sure that you (1) talk to me about it, so that I can incorporate your background story into the world and (2) you work in a group." I designed a former mercenary (half rouge, half fighter). After years of sweat and the loss of many comrades, he finally had enough money to buy a tavern in his hometown. He asked some of his brothers and sisters in arms if they joined him. I pitched the idea to Knight and he was thrilled. I told him I would split my money which I got for a level 12 character. The one half for my equipment, the other half for the tavern, its inventory and the people who will be running it for me. Knight agreed to my idea. The connections which I would get through my tavern, would be more useful than the rest amount of gold in equipment in this sort of campaign he said. I made plans, wrote NPCs (my friends who had fought togehter with me and now turned away from life because of battle fatigue or serious injuries). I created shift schedules and names for all the characteres. I found out about the different types of mead and thought about how I could trade with the traders' guild to replenish my supplies. Heck, I even gave my fighter-rouge ranks in “Perfom piano” so that I could play in my tavern in the evening while my sword was hanging over that piano and I sing about past battles and my guests roared along. Please note that I had told Knight about every step and I had his enthusiastic approval of everything. He was very happy that I had so much fun becoming part of his city and his story. After I had painstakingly created the tavern and equipped myself very well with the other half of the money, I was looking forward to the first session. Hawaiian shirt played a ... a ... well ... I think it was a cleric? I can't remember anymore, it's more than 15 years ago. Please forgive me. However, his character didn't come from this town. He just arrived before the campaign started. So all of his money was spent to his equipment. So, why do I put an emphasis on that? Well, the experienced reader will already know what I'm going to say: To make a long story short: demons. Within an hour after the begining, twenty portals opened from hell in the city. No, we didn't act like fools and we haven't touched an ancient artifact. Hawaiian shirt and I just sat in my tavern, getting to know each other, because he wanted to rent a room to stay the night. Role playing. Because the campaign should be more role-playing. Ten minutes later my tavern was destroyed without anything I could have done, my comrades in arms had died trying to defend themselves against a vrock and three other vrocks danced on the ruins of my tavern. They created an explosion that destroyed the last remnants of my home, my work and my life. Knight noticed that I was anything but happy and ended the session early. I sat quietly for a few seconds before I asked him in a low voice if there was anything I should / could have done to save the city (oh yes, the whole city was destroyed, not just the tavern). Knight sighed and said no. He'd thought about the city adventure and he and Hawaiian Shirt decided that another backpacking adventure would be more fun. And since they had a two-thirds majority, it was decided without my knowledge. I asked if I could count on encounters soon who could replace the other half of my money so that I would not be ridiculously underequired. He said no. I got up and said I was going home. He asked if I liked to continue the campaign. I said no. PS: 3 years ago I tried to lead a city adventure from 1 to 20 in DnD 3.5 myself. It went well up to level 12. Then our paladin caused a genocide and everything went downhill from there. I guess I'm cursed for level 12 city adventures

    I wouldn't call the problems in the last story new DM problems so much that dude cared more about his chicky than having a good time with his friends during the weekly game sessions. It's fine to want to do things together, but there's no need to do everything together. Instead of creating an experience where chicky and friends can hang out together he just provided a situation where he allowed her to poison the well. Then enabled her to do so further. So his friends are now fully against her as a person. Lesson here goes beyond just new players. If your boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever isn't super stoked about playing a real character, don't invite them to play with your friends. Ever.

    In the intro story, it seems like the player was looking for the DM to stop the game until they were ready/willing to play again. If that's the case then that's not fair to everyone else. If there's enough people to play and they wanna play, they should still be able to play. especially if a player is electing out of playing. take all the time you need to get yourself right but you can't expect life to pause without you. Edit: 2nd story It never fails. Curse of strahd is truly a cursed module. and honestly, It's not a very good starter module and it's not the best ravenloft campaign. Death house does barely anything to introduce you to Barovia and is filled with lopsided encounters (considering it recommends the party start at level 1 and is filled with ghouls, a banshee that can 1shot overkill a fair amount of lv 1 characters and can potentially TPK the party before they even get to do anything. and a shambling mound) the book literally builds strahd as a DMPC boss that constantly screws with the party knowing they're too weak and do not have the Mcguffin to kill him. and has tons of dead end leads that exist simply to kill PCs off or penalize them with curses It attracts all the dumb edgelords or the trolls who have played it enough to know what it truly is and seek to ruin the experience for others and.. ugh. this post is getting too long. I just wanted to point out how many horror stories involved CoS and how I loathe the module more and more a little every day.

    The third story is an excellent mixture of newbie GM issues plus blatant favoritism. It's pretty clear that the GM didn't really "get" what running a game was about and didn't understand that DMing requires more than constantly throwing players at groups of increasingly difficult enemies. He also didn't understand that *everyone* at the table needs to be happy with the game, not just the one person you need to go home with at the end of the night. Add these two things together, and you have a guy who is clearly in way over his head who probably didn't even realize there was a problem until everything exploded.
