Thanks again to Mo Mo for helping out with the video! I've been jamming to Smoke and Oakum, so it's time to get back to shanting.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

OP of the LARP post is a liar. He changed his story multiple times. Always to cover his own ass. He also posted to both r/LARP and r/RPGHorrorStories, and deleted the former post when people started digging and realized something didn't add up. In the original story, Steph was led to a secluded parking garage, and even though she wanted to leave, she couldn't because Tony is too physically imposing. She kept saying that she wanted to go home. He also talked a ton about how people liked her because she was really good at fixing props and sewing costumes. After people started roasting him for it, he immediately backpedaled and tried to change his story to claim it was online-online. Even made a sockpuppet account claiming to be Steph. The general consensus was that he realized he may well have been involved in a literal felony, or he's actually Tony.

In my experience, all of the reformed nice guys I read about on reddit had something click at some point and all started the road to introspection and recovery by themselves though some sought therapy. One touching story involved a needy nice guy who got dumped because of his neediness and toxicity, and it took that to have him realize he was misbehaving and hurting himself and others in the process.

I'm the Gnome in the last story, and I can guarantee that shit was absolutely bonkers. Also, to give a little more information about the reason he wasn't immediately kicked from the group after that: He essentially was. At least one of the other party members wasn't comfortable coming forward with their concerns, and asked me if I could speak on their behalf to the GM. As was already stated, we all believed that this dude was actually the GM's friend, but after that incident we actually became vocal in wanting to kick him. In the ensuing conversation, the DM told me that she was just about ready to kick him right then and there, but thought that we were largely ok with it since the only time we came to her with any sort of problem was when my player's sister was snatched up by him, and we signed off pretty much as we normally do (we were all kind of shaken, but the DM *was not* ok with that and ended it right there, about an hour or so earlier than we normally do). We did the redo, and that situation pretty much happened the very next session, so it was a very quick decision to kick him after that, but the DM wanted to give us the option of being the ones to decide to kick him, since we're all pretty good friends with each other (not the kitsune/demon guy) and she highly valued our input on situations like this.

As a LARPer I feel the need to point out: being in your role can feel incredibly real and “dying” in character sometimes is as hard as loosing a friend. That’s why in our group, you literally can not die if you don’t decide to. Get knocked out or close to dying - sure. But no one would ever force you to throw away the hundreds of euros and hundreds (or even thousands if you’ve been playing for a few years) of hours you invested in your character.

Ah, Euros, so you're from my side of the pond I guess. LARPer from Germany here. This kind of ruling about character death is relatively common here, but apparently not in the US. From what I gathered the two LARP cultures are actually quite different in that way. The American ones are apparently also often closed worlds within which the character is played while here it is common to bring the same character to all kind of Cons within the same genre. I'm generalizing a bit though, there are always some exceptions.

Yep... Once you're past your first game, death is literally in the cards (death is called Fate. You draw one of 4 cards. There are ways to go in blessed or cursed.) Once you get to a new point threshold you need a cleric blessing to be blessed when your spirit goes to Fate. You can get tokens from donation rewards... So far, OP and his cronies have: Made multiple edits of the original post, to add or remove details that make them look bad, created a fake account on Twitter, pretending to be Steph (which they promptly deleted after it didn't fool anyone), started rumours that Steph made "in game racist comments" ("she deserved it guys!"), got Tony to start posting on Reddit ("Steph's lying... and anyway, she totally deserved it, guys!"), and created "screenshots" to "prove" that it was indeed all online (which have vanished after people pointed out that this contradicts loads of their original statements). @Mike Dalby “we’ve lost many characters over the years due to issues similar to this.” See I disagree with you for this reason - if it’s happened before, wouldn’t the best thing for the overall majority be to focus on what’s causing the issue and put a stop to it? In this particular story it’s only 1 person out of however many, sure. But if it’s happened continuously in multiple groups now because they have no effective rule against it, it’s just going to start happening more and more. Especially since the people causing the problem aren’t getting punished, their victims are - won’t that just embolden them to continue doing it and ruining the fun for even more people ultimately? One person in one game of a group of 30, yeah it might just be the 1 person that needs to be dealt with. But if this has happened to 30 different people in say the last 5 rounds, that’s a bigger issue that needs to be looked at. It’s still not a majority, but the number IS rising, so better to deal with it now so it never becomes a majority, right? Hope that made sense.

I find it amusing that this video came up today. This past week, my players were super creative when avoiding the traps in the vault that I set up for them. I kid you not when I say that the mvp of this dungeon was a shield. First room - 3 separate sets of poison dart traps on a pressure plate trigger, followed by a 50 foot long spike pit. Bard decides to spider walk across the ceiling to avoid both traps. Then proceeds to use animating performance to animate her shield and send it back across the pit for the other pcs to glide across on. Second room - four spinning blades that take up the entirety of the room bard again tries walking across the ceiling, this time I have her roll Acrobatics because hanging off the ceiling will still bring her in range of the blades, she succeeds, and then the rest of the group decides to attack the blades until they break. Third room - a hallway covered by a permanent darkness spell and three sets of swinging axe traps. Bard, again on the ceiling starts walking down the hallway, finds the first trap, and walks past it, thinking it was a pressure plate but it was motion activated. She makes her saves for the first and second set of traps, and uses the shield to eat the third set. After triggered, they won't trigger again for an hour, so the rest of the group stumbled down the hallway to... Fourth room - 20ft by 15ft acid pool trap. Again, bard walks across the ceiling, and sends the shield back for the other pcs to float across. Fifth room - gargoyles that trigger when they're halfway down the hallway. Even in combat, the shield managed to hit a gargoyle a few times (when no one else could hit ANYTHING for multiple rounds). Loved the whole thing, and we all joked that the mvp of the session was a shield.

I think either Crispy or Crow covered a similar story where they quickly diagnosed the GM with "sadistic evil human who takes joy in others suffering" syndrome. There's no way to solve things diplomatically with those people. Even if a lightning bolt comes from the sky and suddenly they realize they need help, it's not your job or the party's to provide it.

The only reason we didnt perma banish him was that we were trying to give the player a chance and we have a no "hard PVP" rule. If not for that my Kobold would have tried killing him around that point. We didnt realize yet how bad it was gonna be and as pointed out in the story, most of us players thought he was a friend of the GM so we werent sure how to approach things at the time. At least the campaign is going great now and the astrologer player is actually fun to play with. Though she needs to stop casting AoE damaging spells on herself XD.

Oh shit! I'm the Kobold player in the last story. Was listening to the video and when mention of the "kitsune bard" was made I thought it sounded familiar, and when then the "bestow curse on the Kobold" was brought up I knew it was our game. And yeah, it's as bad as what was posted. The game has a lot of homebrew and is pretty fun and I can at least confirm that months later, we haven't had any other player related drama and we are enjoying the campaign to this day. (and for context about almost killing Tiamat, one of the homebrew rules is that a nat 20 on a vorpal blade is instant kill instead of decapitation, and only a last minute swerving of Tiamat saved her from the guaranteed crit the Blade user was saving for such an occasion) If people are curious about some of the stories in that campaign, feel free to ask!

@@BillyBasd It's been some time so my recollection my not be 100% accurate on the details but to answer your questions: Context: in the previous session, the party went to take care of a quick side mission, and I remained at our homebase to take care for something else. When we brought the new guy in, the party found him and brought him back with them. Now, as part of the story, the owner of our base of operation was someone we had been hired to protect, and multiple times we were either deceived or someone/something took advantage of our blind spot to attack our ward. Once the group returned, the new character split up from them to explore the keep. Now, my little Kobold was not warned by anyone someone new had been allowed in and came face to face with the Kitsune, he confronted him, not wanting to let an intruder in and instead of trying to reason with the kobold, Kitsune cast bestow curse on me. with the following effect "While cursed, the target must make a Wisdom saving throw at the start of each of its turns. If it fails, it wastes its action that turn doing nothing." thing is, the duration of the spell increases drastically if you upcast it and he cast it at the fifth level (8 hours duration). Of course the kobold was now in "protect our home" mode and when the rest of the party got wind of the commotion and came to see what happened, they tried to de-escalate, but the kitsune, instead of clearing things up would keep taunting the kobold. He only calmed down after being convinced by the other party members. As for the second question, the reveal that he was actually a demon wasnt made in front of the rest of the party. For context, the gnome had access to a homebrew spell that allowed him to transport a few people to a location already visited, however, we had a pressing matter to take care of with the necrodancers (one of them had put the kobold's sphinx wife in a state that allowed him to control her. so we had to kill him before we lost his tracks) and at the same time we knew that the gnome's sister had been taken in by the leaders of the church of lathender, on the opposite side of the continent (for treason against the church I believe? I dont fully remember how/why they captured her) After gnome and kitsune managed to save the sister, they left, using "the box" which is the gnome's method of transportation, and that is where the reveal was made. After the session ended, we talked a bit between each other (not including demon guy) and we started bringing up some of the issues we had. Of course the fact that he litterally pissed on gnome's parade by staling the soul of his sister just after she was saved from the church, kinda soured everyone's mood. And while I dont mind the occasional in character confrontation, each time he would do or say something, it didnt feel like someone being socially clumsy or awkward, but rather, he seemed to enjoy what he was doing and he knew exactly what he was doing. I think we had one or two more sessions with him, things kept getting worse, now he was actively trying to steal gnoll's adoptive mothers souls so he could control her, he tried to force a deal with the deva NPC, and once he found out we had saved the sphinx from the clutches of the necrodancers he made attempts at striking a deal with the sphinx. By that point, the only reason that we hadnt all turned against him to kill his character was because of the no hard PVP rule. (most of us werent aware yet that the gnome had murdered the kitsune while in the box as it happened in a separate mini session with just gnome, kitsune and GM.) After that last session, we all got in a separate chat to discuss what we felt, how he was getting creepier by the minute, that despite talking to him about all of it, he wasnt relenting, and that he seemed to draw enjoyment from making our characters miserable. I know that I was starting to "dread" the sessions while he was still part of the group and I dont think I was alone in that where we almost didnt feel like playing anymore. Luckily, we brought all of this up to the GM and he didnt get to play any more sessions with us. If you want to hear a bit more about the campaign, the writer of the reddit post wrote an other story a few weeks after this video was posted, and was covered in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2ZnlZOcoaiaitY.html (allthingsDnD)

More like Sadistic DM who is a Certifiable Sociopath. I have been a DM for 20 years, and I can tell you that what he was doing was not about trying to make the game challenging. He was looking for ways to force his players to bow to his will; to dance for his own amusement. With the traps thing, if the players are using a strategy that would be viable in real life, then guess what ... it should work in the game. The real way for a DM to get around that would be to rule that pressure plate traps require a certain minimum weight (100% a thing in real life), and that setting off a tripwire trap could alert nearly enemies (also a thing in real life). And then the snakes thing? No. EVERY animal, even giant magical beasts (not from the Plane of Fire) will back off from someone waving fire in their face. Not to mention the stats he gave those "ordinary" snakes were clearly meant to TPK the party at the DM's own amusement. This is not what being a DM is supposed to be.

While this was primarily men excluding women in the past. In more recent years we've seen it from both genders. It reminds me of that old song "I can do things better than you can." Just because your a different gender doesn't mean you can't do something just because your a man or woman. ...Unless it has to do with the whole baby making thing, but that is a completely different topic.

7:55 I would have "shazam'd" the wizard, you know the DM is going to nyx it anyway. Grab the wizard, run down the hall while screaming and making noise, throw him to the nearest crowd of monsters since it "isn't pvp to leave someone to die with monsters". I had a similar experience and that is what I did. I "lassoed" a party member(bard i think) who was trying to run for his life while leaving me(druid), the rogue and two other party members who were unconscious to die. On purpose, in metagame, because "we wont survive and I dont want to make a new character" not because "it's my characters flaw" or anything like that. I was a druid (not really heals but could side support in emergencies, cleric was one of the unconscious characters) and I thorn whipped him toward me, and fortunately the DM was "fair and impartial" and decided that abandoning your team in metagame, "just because" was a real dick move. Being nearby, I was also the subject of many attacks, but I was more than happy to sacrifice myself for murdering a "traitor". (only one of us made it out of that fight, the rogue, not me) You can imagine he rage-quit after that. I heard he even tried bringing that same bard into another DM's game a couple months later, but many of our local/friend groups share stories and he had to make a new one anyway. 15:50 I was part of a "free larp group", we didnt have structure or "government", just a bunch of guys hitting each other with foam covered sticks. I dont get the people that bring all of the politics and everything drama into role play enactment. I have participated in SCA(Society of Creative Anachronism) events and enjoy the environment and roleplay... to an extent. When people start bringing political or relationship drama in, it gets dicey. BUT THEN... they get mad that the VICTIM, is calling her shots and illuminating the BS that's going on. It's the kind of community that I would enlist in, start sending "death threats" to all characters involved for "killing my long lost sister", then backstabbing every single one of them. And if they wise up and tell people that I'm the one that killed them, which would be "metagaming" then we can have words and I will just murder them outright, in public, over and over again. I am similarly an asshole, but I prefer to take my anger and pettiness out on other assholes.

Following the letter of the rules while violating its spirit- such as allowing a player to attack someone in game for the out of game "crime" of not going on a date with him- is absolutely bonkers, and it's clear the OP was more interested in covering their own ass than anything else. The fact that they posted on Reddit assuming other people would back them up on their decision is laughable.

Some of these were deathtraps, some were less lethal, but all had at least two or three solutions to them. The problem? If the players didn't pick the exact solution the GM would, they were punished (usually suffered the effects of the puzzle/trap). Why the players stayed in the game as long as they did is beyond me (note: there were other offenses by the GM, not just the creativity hampering).

The LARP story gets WORSE because the pvp scene was just the two players and the GM in a parking garage that not all of the staffers and players at that larp knew was accessible. And they *cornered* her physically to make sure she couldn't get away.

Hey Crispy! I’ve been watching your content for a little while now, and I gotta say I love your content! I don’t really know if this is my place, but if I could make one request, the next time you include a CW, could you add a word of two about what it is that is damaging? That way, people who might be affected can have time to prepare or avoid that section of the video? Sorry if this isn’t alright or if I missed something. Thanks :)

I’m not sure if I would consider this a horror story but it’s by far the most iconic story from my home brew campaign. I play it with my good friends and I’ve got 4 of them at the table. A Tiefling hex blade warlock, a Yuan Ti celestial warlock, a Loxodon cleric and a human rouge. There was an ambassador to a major kingdom who was secretly a vampire working under a lich. This ambassador would periodically taunt the party since they seemed to uncover his identity but had no means of proving it and wouldn’t dare make such a righteous claim about someone of that high of standing (this vampire was even buffed because truthfully vampires are a bit too weak and I also made my players a bit too stong through magical items). Around this time the players were about level 10 or so. They found themselves in the office/work space of the vampire ambassador. In the room with them was a death knight and a simulacrum of the ambassador as well (one of many gifts given to the ambassador by his lich lord). I couldn’t make it more obvious that this was a fight they didn’t want to take. Once again the ambassador gets to taunting the party knowing the odds are in his favor. Tiefling Warlock: “does the stain glass window behind him look like it’s magical and somehow preventing the sun from harming him?” Me: “roll a perception” He doesn’t roll that well. I don’t remember the exact number but he was never good a perception rolls. Me:”the glass on the window seems to be normal stained glass but it’s hard for you to tell if there is any magic involved” (it was true. It was just glass. Sunlight wasn’t hurting him because of another gift given to him by the lich) The Teifling warlock was so convinced that the window was the key. So much so that he proceeded to grab the chair he was sitting in and chucked it through the window, promptly initiating combat after that. The four party members vs 2 buffed vampires and a slightly increased hp death knight. Well it was the party plus one other character, an Efreeti (they found a genie bottle earlier in the campaign and the Efreeti inside it allied with the party, referring to the Loxodon cleric as his father since he was the one who freed him). The fight went… bad, or I should say it was going bad. The vampire ambassador was taken down but turned to mist and began to travel to its coffin, the Tiefling did everything in his power to follow the mist but lost it once it made its way into the catacombs under the castle, the rouge and Yuan ti warlock kept getting knocked unconscious by the death knight and cloned vampire while the cleric desperately dropped spell after spell to prevent the other two from making death saves/ dying. All was looking grim and I honestly didn’t want to kill my party but I did try everything in my power to make it clear that this wasn’t a fight they wanted to take. But then I saw it, right there on the Efreeti stat block. Plane shift! So the Efreeti grabbed the two that kept dying and plane shifted to the first level of hell (hell because of backstory purposes for the Efreeti) and the Loxodon Cleric teleported himself to the Teiflings location (the party had nifty teleporting stones that allowed them to teleport to one another once per day so long as they were in the same plane of existence). Did I plan on having the party split off into two groups? Especially one group being in hell and the other being in the catacombs under a kings castle? Absolutely not! But those next two half sessions I had with one half of the party at a time, going over what they’re doing simultaneously in bother their situations was fantastic. This group has gotten up to countless shenanigans throughout this 2 year campaign and it’s all coming close to an end very soon. So why did this story stick out to me specifically? It’s probably because it’s more of a cautionary tale to all DM’s or those who aspire to be one. No matter how you see a scenario playing out, no matter how much you think you’ve planned ahead of time, you’re party ultimately has the final say in what happens. And sometimes half the party ends up in hell while the other half scooby doo through the catacombs running from a death Knight and vampire. And that’s ok. It’s exciting and I keeps you as the DM on your toes as well. It’s part of the charm of dungeons and dragons. How you make a story and your friends shape that story even more.

7:09 This shit is why i don't understand pay to play. If they locked him out that is 100% them starting PvP if the place they are locked in is a dangerous place with high lethality. So good DM would allow the fight. If no PvP then retcon and assume the player was inside the tiny hut. If non happen then the OP should've just rolled the dice to attack. Can't take back rolled dice. At that point make them kick you out, if they are cancer make them take that choice to kick you. (It's a toxic mind set yes, but honestly fuck that group. But the OP is a far better person than myself so really can't judge folks). Awesome vid tho!

Gonna comment about a creative solution a person in my group managed a couple of weeks ago (as of posting this). The enemy was a really flamboyant guy, super rich clothes, seemed like he didn't like to get his hands dirty, seemed SUPER out of place with the rest of the bandit group he was in, and he was tangling with our group's Aarakocra ranger. Ranger's animal companion bites the guy... And flamboyant guy just pulls the snake out and, during that, reveals the inside of his coat having all kinds of feathers and animal hides as a sort of sick "collection." Out of character, we sorta got chills and went "oh crud we made a mistake underestimating this guy." Ranger goes "screw this", pulls a jar of honey out of his inventory, dropkicks the jar at flamboyant guy, and gets a critical success. The dude starts shrieking and freaking out that we ruined his clothes. The cherry on top was the DM having a swarm of hornets appearing the next turn to chase flamboyant guy off of the map (those jerks absolutely *love* sweet stuff like honey, after all). We still had a ton of bandits to deal with, but it was a creative solution to get rid of one really fast! It's a fond RP glory story memory now, even if it's not a very old one.

Intro- What? Women in command? SACRILEGE! Story 1- DM was paid to DM, and part of being a DM is to do it fairly and not just favor those who paid. OP got rightly screwed. Speaking of which... Story 2- Perfect example of "Everyone color within the lines- except me, because I'm just so cool and a rebel!" F off. Story 3- Never bring real life anger to a game- any game. Be an adult and accept that you aren't everyone's cup of tea... Story 4- Buying souls and having sex slaves? No wonder the Satanic Panic of the '80's gained traction- it's folks like the kitsune bard that give all other players a bad name.

Also in general larp is much less forgiving than tabletop because it's not centralized around one group that the GM is making a game for but more of a situation that the players themselves delve into but that situation is still 100% steaming garbage and mercing a player because they wouldn't accept your advances is some fucking bullshit

So, this guy asked a woman out, she refused, and he decided to MURDER HER (in as real a way as he could do without actually taking her real life), and the moderators HELPED HIM, and they've had this sort of issue before, but they blame HER for complaining about BEING MURDERED IN GAME BECAUSE SHE REFUSED TO DATE HIM IN REAL LIFE! She dared to complain that she was LITERALLY UNSAFE BECAUSE THERE WAS A MURDERER ON THE LOOSE, WHO WAS ALLOWED AND ASSISTED IN MURDERING HER BECAUSE SHE REFUSED TO DATE HIM! Oh, man. Oh, MAN! 1) Are ALL the moderators men who think that women do not have the right to reject any man's advances? 2) Are ALL the moderators the sort who think that out-of-game arguments should be settled with in-game murder? 3) Are ALL the moderators wondering why this sort of thing keeps happening, and how can they POSSIBLY stop those pesky women from COMPLAINING about it? Without actually, you know, addressing the issue, itself, and taking steps to ensure that it doesn't happen again. 4) Are ALL the moderators actually rape enthusiasts who view women as sex objects and not actual human beings, and WANT to assist each other in their rape fantasies? Because that man wanted to rape the woman, but was not able to do so, so he murdered her, instead, and they find that COOL?! Are ALL the moderators assholes who don't deserve a social life with other human beings?!

Our last session had my players in Blue Alley: "throw the bones of the skeleton I just beat to set off the traps in the room" and "remember that chain of sausage I got from the halfling house? I'm going to see if these boggles like it." On the other hand as DM I kinda screwed up in that I didn't rebalance an encounter (after a couple of players couldn't make it) or really give them a good way out of it. So after like one round with two of the four characters down I let the other two surrender instead and took half of gold, some wine, and a ham. BUT also let the rogue after being brought back up easily follow the orcs back to camp so that they could go after them later. My DM learning curve is sometimes slow, but you do have to not be against the players and give them chances. Also playing without a tank makes designing combat super hard.
