Holy mother of Tiamat. This is OP here, I wasn't expecting for this story to ever be covered. Especially not by Crispy whom I've been following for awhile. I'm honor to grace the halls here and I suppose I should make some distinctions here. Best wishes to you Crispy! 1. I probably stuck around longer than I should have. I'm one of those players who sticks around since I try to always show up to campaigns even if they're boring or I don't have fun with them since I feel like it's my obligation. I know it's not the best mentality but I try to be steward player, which often leads to excuses when this stuff happens as "fluke" or "it'll get better". Too much optimism I think on my part which I've been trying to be more "No D&D is better than Bad D&D". I would have left after the being escorted off for the Kitsune Fake Death scene but I thought it was just a flubb and had already talked about it with Fighter after it had happened, believing that it wouldn't happen again. The second tower with the Wizard was the last straw and I just couldn't from there. 2. I feel bad for the Rogue. He was with us throughout the time I joined and the only time he got mentioned was like once in passing and I'm not even sure what his purpose being there was. He didn't really seem to have a goal and didn't talk much, so if he had any stakes they were definitely never acted on or visible enough in order to recognize for the six months I was there. 3. I didn't have a typo with Deus Ex Druid romance. So Druid was part of a circle and was sent by the Arch Druid or head druid to assist the party (mind you this was like 4 sessions left before the end of the campaign) and so in order to get a happy ending, the DM basically forced the trope of "Childhood friends turned lovers" on to the Druid right before the last session as the Head Druid professed her love to him. 4. The Two Succubi, without even allowing us to know or try to perceive them, always knew what we did and turned it into manga. Not that we could kill them or anything as even when angering a Fallen God, they managed to get out unscaved. They had wanted us to break into the tower of the Wizard, retrieve the daughter (who was another Succubus, shocker, who made the Sorc try to kill us) of their boss and just expect everyone to not ask questions. We refused of course and so it was brought up by Samurai Tabaxi (who was also Cleric's love interest) who mentioned that we should totally go after the guy. Played completely straight with barely anytime passing their after request. 5. The Shadow Council that was ignored for the whole length of the 8 month was brought up at the very end but just so happens that the Shapeshifter managed to get away despite literally being fried like barbeque and should have been dead. We knew the Rebels wanted Democracy but we didn't know how they'd go about it nor why they wanted it. The Emperor was the only opposition that they had who they knew was being a figure head, yet they went ahead with a needless war, which continued despite having a new Emperor lined up and ready. We didn't even know why they continued to fight after we captured the city capitol, killed their leader and from the way the DM described it, essentially cripple them within the span of three days. So it felt completely like it the war was just there to pad out the plot which different set pieces. 6. What I meant at the end was that I hoped that they'd be less one dimensional and be more open since it was sequel campaign and thus should in theory be more fluid and allow for everyone to interact. During the time I was there, it felt like we were NPCs just waiting for our turn in the spotlight when Cleric or Sorc didn't have something lined up since the plot was heavily wrapped around the "War" and the Cleric's personal affairs. The interactions was bubbled Cleric with occasional Sorc (who might have been involved because it was a custom race made BY the DM) which extreme favortism towards her. Childhood friends, Gods bending backwards for her, being engaged to a guy who kill an army single handedly. Meanwhile, the rest of the party barely got any attention plot wise and barely any acknowledgement (two of us could breathe underwater but the guys on the boat approaching the Empire's capitol had already premade waterbreathing potions). We didn't have any real impact on the plot and if you tried doing anything unique or personal, it was either wrapped up as quickly as it started or was ignored in favor of the central plot. But what I hate most of all is that none of characters evolved. Cleric remained favored child despite trying to rez a person who almost cracked the God Code and should have been erased from history. Sorc never had to deal with her Oni nature nor come to terms that her race were born from twisted humans (at least according to some Japanese lore, who we never got any lore on their race). Rogue never got any love and Druid...was Druid. Even Fighter, who was shaken by the death of her race sibling, was barely able to grieve before being pushed unto the battlefield for the Giant Demon fight. We didn't roleplay as characters in a living world, we were just playing socket puppets in a set with the DM being too focused on their own story. Fighter is taking place in the sequel and wants to play a dynamic character, but I fear that it will be the same thing with a different coat of paint. Either Fighter will become the central character and everything will revolve around him or the world will forget he exists and he will be put in conflict with the new Main Character as the world functions on the only most basic of logic and their impact being nothing more than window dressing.

Honestly having a couple of 4th wall breaking succubi making manga of the campaign could be fun as maybe a recap mechanic. Like that could legitimately be interesting as them being like observers outside of normal time. The moment you make them in the game and interactable though, you really gotta be careful.

Side not for anyone interested: I talked with the Fighter and he felt similarly. He didn't really know what was going on in the story and nor did he really care since the DM would force everyone back on track anyway. He didn't get any meaningful interactions either and he kept playing because it was his most tolerable campaign. He didn't mention his problems as he was also being patient, which didn't pan out for him since the only mentioning of his crafted backstory was the Undead Demonslayer, who didn't even talk to him despite bearing his family name. To top it off, the Fighter didn't even get to reach his dream of making his character a legend, instead she just died of old age. I tried reaching out to the Rogue to hear what he had to say but all I got was silence. Fighter mentioned that he was going to be assertive for his new character in the Sequel. I hope that he can bring about change.

Heyo, I'm the Fighter of the shounen story. A small piece of info about the epilogue of the campaign, every other pc either settled down, fugged and had children while my character resolved the OP's arc behind the scenes and promptly died afterwards since she was a simic hybrid with a short lifespan. I have had quite a number of problems with this game but it was the first game that I completed, so it has a special place in my heart.

You're correct. Except that while the Sorc was female, she would out of character refer to herself as a Himbo. Additionally, she would always present herself in a masculine way as they didn't believe in femininity. So I called them a Himbo since the Sorc described their character as such. But you are right, they should have been a bimbo.

I've never seen a campaign through to the end because DMs have lives too. I've completed some story arcs that could have ended with the "End of Campaign" if the players hadn't wanted to continue in the same setting, and characters were only level 6 in one case, 9 in another, and I don't remember the other two, but levelling was uneven because first ed AD&D worked that way. Not that this comment has a lot to do with your chosen stories, just something I was reminded of.

One of our players is moving away, so she and the DM conspired to have her character executed the same way her character's mother was. Her character was pretty much the adopted daughter of one of our PCs and the adopted sister of my PC, so there was a lot of crying around the table when this session took place last week..... Not really. They don’t mean the same thing. Himbo is a term of effection, bimbo is an insult. Many people prefer calling the trope a “she himbo”, or just himbo. Himbo = Dumb, Pretty, Nice/Friendly. Bimbo = Dumb, Pretty, Self Absorbed. A himbo faceplants tripping over you, but then checks to see if you’re ok. A bimbo freaks out until she can find a mirror to check her makeup.

I actually do have a story related in theme to the last one! It's not a horror story though, thank goodness. This happened about 2 years ago, so some details are obviously fuzzy, but this is what I can recall! Basically, my brother and his work friend decided to play D&D and asked if I wanted to join. I agreed and we set up a day and time. There was 5 of us plus the DM. And as it goes with most things, real life things happened and our Barbarian had to leave the group and told the DM he doesn't care what happens to his character, but make it fun! //(Small trigger warning I guess here, as it does have mention of self-deleting! Not irl though, the character.)// I can't fully recall exactly how, but the DM decided to have the Barbarian wander off to "self-delete" because he accidently killed two kids in the previous session. The Fighter and Sorcerer for whatever reason followed, and tried to stop the Barbarian (now being roleplayed by the DM) from doing the Self-Delete. It was a bungle of Critical Fails. The Sorc used Mage Hand to try to untie the noose, but critical failed and pushed the Barbarian, so the Fighter ran over and was trying to hold up the Barbarian to try to keep him from suffocating or whatever. So then the Sorc tried to use I think Burning Hands or some other ranged magic, and totally missed, starting a small forest fire! The Fighter tried to cut the rope with her dagger, but Critically Missed and cut the Barbarian for some damage! Even though the Barbarian is technically not at 0 HP, the DM has it to where he's rolling death saves because well...Yeah. And the Barbarian is at 2 fails at this point. So one more and he's out. So the Sorc and Fighter roleplay a little, and the Sorc switches places with the Fighter trying to hold up the Barbarian. I should mention the Sorc was a Dwarf, and the Fighter was a Dragonborn, so the the short Sorcerer had to stand on his tippy toes, which was so freaking funny to watch roleplay out. FINALLY, the Fighter rolls a hit on the rope and cuts the Barbarian down, saving him. Now why did they choose to save the Barbarian that has no player? Honestly I don't know, I think it was a "it's what my character would do" thing. But obviously, we can't have the Barbarian around because he has no player to play him! So in newbie DM fashion, the DM has the Barbarian fly into a rage and attack the two who tried to save him. So now, they have to put down their raging friend. After all was said and done, and the small forest fire stamped out, the Fighter picks up the cut rope and shakes her head saying, "what a waste of a good rope." Oh man. It was a funny little thing! It's the only real D&D game I've ever played, but so many stupid funny things happened in the 3 sessions it lasted. The group couldn't keep playing because the DM had to move and got a new job. I would be a liar if I said I didn't miss it. The DM made a fairly interesting story with a circus of illusions or something! I really wanted to get to the bottom of that strange story. Oh well. But yeah, that's my crazy little story! Hope whoever reads it gets a good chuckle. ^_^

Yeah, sorry. Most of it was from memory and even then, the series of events were quite literally presented to us as that. Find Cleric's Mom, force fight her Shapeshifter friend, report back to people we barely met, fight an entirely pointless war. I mean we did have a pit stops since the DM loved to give brief resolutions to some of our character's backstories when we are on rails, that unless you were Cleric, your background was never thought of nor touched again past these moments. Fighter hailed from a well-renown demon slaying family yet the only reference was the Undead Demonslayer who shared Fighter's last name but who they couldn't talk with. Druid's circle only came in at the second to last session just to get him married to the Head Druid. In comparison, Sorc had living relatives who we focused on for an entire session in a "Vengeance is Bad" side plot and Cleric constantly had NPCs surround her from both her backstory and from the plot.

As completely nonsensical as the campaign was, this seems like a clear-cut case where the OP was just not a good match for the group. The OP was looking for a roleplay-intensive campaign with high emotional stakes, while everyone else wanted to have a big ol' anime-flavored power trip. Which is, you know, fine, so long as everyone's on board, but unfortunately the OP was not on board and the GM wasn't interested in adjusting things to be more inclusive.

@Naukumaija Mau-mau It's possible but since the only perspective we have is the OP's, the only thing we can do is speculate about how the other players were thinking/feeling.

I wasn't looking for high emotional stakes, I was looking for stakes at all. The only stakes were with the Cleric who was directly involved with the war, while everyone else followed because it was the plot. We didn't know the consequences if we failed, we didn't even know the people in charge who asked us to join the war. Our backstories either had a brief, one session wrap up (quite literally with my Yuan Ti) or never brought up. I asked Fighter about it and they felt the same. They didn't have any real meaningful interactions nor any development related to their backstory. They didn't mention their problems since they were trying to be patient and was the most tolerable of the campaigns they were in. It didn't help that our interactions were very in service to the plot or were cookie cutter. The characters weren't characters, they were cardboard cutouts with no room to develop or grow outside of what the DM wanted them to go through. The demon never developed beyond Cleric's adopted kid. Cleric never faced consequences. Sorc couldn't decide on their character's personality. Our own Rogue was essentially a stranger. We were given tasks by people we barely met for 10 minutes that invoked great trust such as breaching a capitol city of your enemy. I wasn't looking for high stakes or immersive roleplaying, I was hoping to play a fun Asian inspired game where we actually had impact on the story instead of following story mode with bland characters and no cohesion amongst the group. We weren't playing D&D, we were playing Fallout 3.

So more often than not I’m on the side of the victim or usually the op but in this case as it seems the other players had a good time it sounds like this OP is a bit pretentious and expected something different from the game. I say this cuz both there PCs were over the top and edgy and when that wasn’t focused on he insulted the GM and other players it just seems very clear on this one that’s there’s another side of the story and honestly I’d like to here it.

More or less from what's gathered. OP, Fighter, and maybe(? Not sure) Rogue wanted some form of actual story. The rest, DM included, just wanted a power fantasy.

Ok, let's be clear. This ain't shonen bs. Or at least not GOOD shonen BS. Shonen BS is like beating the bad guy and making them your friend only to proceed to do the same to the next bad guy. Also about power of friendship and overcoming what should be legitimately impossible odds. Being all whiny and crying is more just bad character. I get doing the whole "why me?" but there's a reason why Gundam Seed isn't super liked. When a character you are supposed to root for never shuts up about being made to fight, you have a really hard time giving a crap about them.
