Insecure Incel Simps for a Karen with TTRPGs (Worst Story Yet?) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Yep, went through my catalog. I think that this is definitely one of the worst I've covered.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

The DM should follow the rules as closely as he can, and if he feels the need to ignore rules it should be to his players benefit otherwise your players will think you’re an asshole. Note: I say this as a DM myself, players really don’t appreciate it when you blatantly screw them over with a rule change that only takes power away from them without compensating them with a rule change that gives them somewhat more freedom. The last thing they want to hear is “ I know it says that you can do this in the rulebook, but fuck you anyway I don’t feel like allowing you to play the rules as intended now get back in your very narrow railroad and enjoy the game I want.”

I will say, I was shocked to hear that some groups out there dont allow couples to play due to favoritism. As a DM who’s boyfriend is one of her players, has been a player for said boyfriend when he DMs, and in a group in which theres another couple where the husband DMs and his wife plays, none of us play favorites, its just kinda bizarre. Im not knocking on rules set by other groups, but it is possible to not play favorites

The wife was super engaged in the RP and was quite attentive to combat for all she talked about not caring for it, while the husband would alternate between napping and playing the most apathetic and attack-bot Barbarian ever. He didn't even dislike the game, and kept up with what was going on when he wasn't asleep, but they were on such different levels of engagement that I'm sure it was mostly her idea to join.

"Fantasy" is something people use to "satisfy" (temporarily) desires that they cannot satisfy in the real world. And dnd ends up being an environment that some seek for this, consciously or not. And as the "god" of this world, the DM will have problems with some people when it impedes their satisfaction and generates frustration, something they just try to avoid by fleeing to the fantasy world.

That feeling on back of your mind where you believe how "bad people will change at some point" just confirms and reinforces their shitty behavior. Another possible reason why they stayed with these people was because they had nobody else to play with and were going by the logic that "any player is better than no player" and that incels have tendency to snap, so probably they were afraid to leave.

I have played in a table in which the GM's girlfriend was also a player. There was no favoritism. In fact it was the opposite. Our GM was so scared of playing favorites by accident that his poor girlfriend would always end up drawing the short stick in most situations, having less spotlight time and barely finding any useful item. It got to a point in which the group got worried and asked them what was wrong. As you may guess, nothing was wrong, they just didn't want favoritism and went a bit too far.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. The whole this is 1/1000000. I guess theoretically it could happen, especially if for some reason the Sorc used Tides of Chaos to automatically get the 1/20 chance from casting a spell, but it's more likely the story's just made up since that's the part of the wild magic table most people know about. Or maybe they did the rules wrong and thought every spell turned into wild magic. And even then, wouldn't the rest of the party stand back far enough from the blast radius not to be affected, just in case? It all just seems extremely unlikely. Considering I played an entire campaign as a wild magic sorcerer and never got the Fireball effect, skepticism is high.

In high school, my best friend's ex randomly decided to 'take up' D&D to try and hit on me, and get close to me. After being rejected, twice, he would make snide comments such as, "Well your opinion doesn't mean anything because *YOU* don't have a boyfriend." Also started bringing girls to play for a single session... in an attempt to make me want him? These girls were often completely checked out by the end of the first hour. He kept playing with the group after I moved away. His character, a half-Minotaur _(Human feet and face. Rest was Minotaur, now you too, get to live with that mental image)_ died during a session a year later, was resurrected after his body parts were reattached in the wrong places, then rage quit. (Understandably, however from my perspective, it was long overdue. I'm over simplifying his misogynistic interactions in and out of character towards me.) I do hope he tried another group, this time with the intent of playing the game rather then going in trying to score with someone. He did seem to enjoy it on some level.

Smart decision on his part! I'd have probably just contacted the publisher and explained the situation, and included screenshots of that conversation with Michael. I don't know how much that would help, but the publisher would probably at least be a bit less likely to prosecute you and a bit more likely to let you buy from them again. That lawyer probably knows the best way to handle it, though, so... good move, there! I was once given a copy of a gamebook PDF by a friend, so I could create my player character on my own time. I treated the situation like he had loaned me a copy of the book. I made my character, and then I deleted that PDF. And I later bought my own copy of that book. I still felt a little uncomfortable about the whole thing, but those lockdowns were on, so my options were sort of limited right then.

As far as it comes to banning couples at tables... It seems like it's best to ban them if they are in the 25-or-under range. In that group they tend toward bringing dumb teen drama to the table in that passive-aggressive manner that makes everyone else uncomfortable, blatantly cheat with someone else at the table or a friend of someone at the table, have jealousy issues, or else just end up being a magnet for the creep at the table who doesn't seem to understand what "unavailable for dating" means. Doubly-so if one of the couple is the DM! In the 26+ range, they seem to have stabilized and gotten to the point where they have "settled down" and have usually made it past that trial period for determining life-long compatibility and have drastically reduced chances of crazy drama and are likely to have the only issues be said creeps who don't seem to understand that being in a relationship means that they aren't interested in any advances.

When I mess up the read l usually just adjust the script on the fly to fit with whatever I said. If the story’s sentence structure is repetitive or the English isn’t great, I’ll make similar changes.

Honestly it really seems like people who do wild magic builds are just trolling. Why yes I want to be a Sorcerer, but I'd rather not have my spells work right all the time and do random BS. I swear I'd murder any party member who goes that build. Friends, I'm doing this for you, do you really want a time bomb walking around with us? *stabs Sorcerer while they sleep on the first in game night*
