How a Narcissistic “That Guy" DESTROYED My First D&D Game (10K Special) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Hope you guys enjoy this. Certainly feels great to finally get it off my chest. Honestly, it happened so long ago. I hope Wizard is doing better now. Who knows?
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

You should of had strahd say yes, turn him into a vampire and tell him to roll another character. I almost did this to one of my players but not because he was a problem player. I made it clear that vamp spawn were slaves and he still thought strahd would let him continue adventuring after I turned him.

I had a player, after I had laid out the plot in the module adventure we were running (SKT) say: "I don't care, does anybody care? I guess we'll just do it because it's clearly the main plot." That was very soul destroying for me as a DM. It was also the point I decided I wasn't going to run modules anymore.

Yeah, I get that. I have a friend whose character just didn't care about anything. Emotionally-charged moments? She didn't care. Familiarizing herself with the NPCs that took the party in? Didn't give a shit about them. I felt like she had to be bored, but her cold, emotionless ex-Yakuza just did. Not. Care. In fact, she was busy thinking of ways to abandon the group that had agreed to help them in the first place. One of the other players was also very passive and didn't do much, and since I had three players total, this was basically me engaging one guy. Long story short, I just let the game quietly fade away after a few months. I wasn't about to keep putting all the effort that went into planning a session in for people that weren't even invested.

Oh yeah, we had a spotlight hogging dude who created a really hostile environment where you had to be able to shout louder than everyone else to get a word in. That's because he always talked over others to do whatever dumb shit crossed his mind, like his character was an embodiment of intrusive thoughts.Anyways, after fighting with the DM for like 20 minutes over a hypothetical that A: no one else was else was interested in and B: would never be utilized in-game, and following that up with the session immediately after, we decided to kick him because virtually everybody in the campaign wanted him gone. What did he do? Well, he had a magical compass which was given to him by a goddess, Mistra. He actively did not respect anyone, including gods, so he decided to smash it against a rock as everyone else was deciding what they wanted to do. In response, the compass basically became a ticking time bomb which he threw into a portal to nuke my homeworld, completely servering any way in and leaving 200x200 ft sphere hole around. Then, he was taken to what was basically god court, where his goddess had to fight for his innocence while also not wanting to be there. It was a really funny scene bc everyone in the party either tried, and failed, to find a redeeming quality with his character, or just talked shit about him with the goddess. Ok I was not expecting to write this much... anyways you inspired me to help the DM kick him and we immediately after had a great session with lots of fun rp.

As much as it sounds more than reasonable to kick out and not want to play with someone that just cannot ever read the room, talks over others and sandbags the party, presumably on purpose... I wouldn't think having a character mock the person's character for being a heterosexual human would be the thing that needs five minutes of ranting. Is the elf ranger "speciest" or something? I guess it works if the setting is against humans, I think I have heard of settings that dislike humans with them being considered "horrid and unpure blobby mixes of all races"...

Best method to avoid kicking players is to talk to your players first. I'm not great as a DM (were all noobs) but I flat out told them: look at everyone at the table here. This is your team and you need to look out for them. Because if you don't, you're going to die. No one is going to save you from being surrounded and butchered if you treat them poorly. And vice-versa. You guys NEED to look out for each other. Otherwise this will fall apart in a very fast party wipe. This got them sitting upstraight. I told them I wouldn't be unfair but I wouldn't hold back. I'm proud of how much they took this to heart

Try to talk to your players as much as you can manage. Trust your instincts and read the room often. Are you having fun? Are your other players having fun with the things going on? If the answer to either of those is no, it’s time to sit everyone down (or at least who you suspect is at fault), then take whatever action is necessary. Repeat as necessary until a kick becomes an obligation or the reprimanding is applied.

I know the same feeling you were going through. I had a friend I knew since Kindergarden (I changed schools for a time and reconnected a few years later) and I considered him a dear friend, but he always had anger issues and toxic behaviors. I unfortunately, let it slide for years until college when him along with a few other friend and I started chatting through discord. I was starting to see him for what he was and called him out on it, and he seemed to get the message and for the next few years tried to improve, or so I thought. No matter what programs or groups he went to he just could not believe that he had a problem, and just like that I ghosted one of my oldest friends. I felt both heavy and relived at what I done but overtime I relized how petty, controling, and toxic he actually was. I just wish I could seen it earlier, but hindsight is 20/20.

see, I wanted to play a character who intended to ally himself with strahd, and came to barovia to do that. what I did was tell the DM during the character pitch and make it clear that he still cared about the other PCs and would not attack him. he ended up turned into a full vamp, and is the party's main healer, who wouldn't leave them for anything even as he follows strahds orders. it's led to some good in character tension and role-play, especially as everyone knows and is trying to figure out why he'd do that! so it's possible and fun to work with strahd, but make sure everyone is on board first.

I mean, my group had double crossers in my COS campaign that finally ended after basically getting nowhere due to us just Scooby Dooing out way through the campaign and avoiding all plot points and pissing almost everyone off in Barovia. At that point we just said screw it, some party members joined Strahd and became his new lieutenants while the rest of us got the shit kicked out of us and finally thrown out of Barovia. Honestly our last session was one of the most beautiful messes i have ever had in all my years playing ttrpgs lol. Our DM realized that this group just doesn't do modules so he's cooking up an homebrew campaign that would better cater to this groups style, which I'm excited for. This seems to be the few times getting double crossed by other party members didnt piss me off. Like when you plan to screw over your party, its up to both player and DM to make sure it still works out for everyone or you're probably looking at losing most of your table. I mean, if screwing over other players is your shtick, play another game, like VtM or Munchkin. But seriously congrats on the channel growth, you're one of my favorite content creators. And, yeah kicking this guy was the right decision

I was new, don’t have any serious games in my belt so wanted to learn and made sure with PMs to let him know I was a new DnD player and role 20 user. They completely forgot I was greener then grass so they forgot I was on his list or to put me on a beginner’s session. In the end they would act all frustrated to why I don’t tell him I don’t as new to roll 20 ( when again we had a whole personal convo by mail a week before). Thanks to a casual group, I am a better player now.

Hey bro. Just want you to know that I've been listening to your channel for a little bit now. I don't get much dnd play time, but I get around to a few home brews here and there. Most end up abandoned. But I'm an avid listener and your stories have not only warned me of what not to do, but they've inspired little additions to my stories. Just wanted you to know how much you're appreciated. Please keep the tavern open and the stories coming.

Spotlight hoggers really suck. We had one in our old group... he couldn't stand it when his "carefully assembled builds" (which he usually found on sketchy sites online) unavoidably turned out sucky as heck, he didn't listen to other people's plans OR consider his own actions (seriously, who shoots an arrow at a freakin' ELDER DRAGON that is flying away without even looking at us?), and would assign the fault of his character being lousy to the gaming system. And when he tried to GM... well, let's just say that he didn't give a damn about anything but his personal likes and leave it at that. And heaven forbid he should try to assemble a character in point buy games such as the Hero System of GURPS... he tried to buy ALL powers, stating "Otherwise, how would he have survived before meeting the team?" ...I dunno, strategy? Stealth? Knowing when to retreat? Being aware of your own limitations? Nnnnope, the system is flawed, because his ideas are awesome and since he can't reproduce them using the game it's the game that sucks.

My group just had to deal with one last week and to make a very long story short the attention hog managed to make another player freak out to the point of them crying, shaking, and squeezing my hand for all they are worth. Took away all the other player's agency and almost got their character killed and none of us including dm could have done anything to fix it.

Frankly, I can really associate the whole unfulfilled character making aspect of it. I like to make the characters, and then translate them mechanically afterwards. This can sometimes backfire unfortunately as they usually become weak in a vacuum until I reach a certain level and they "come alive". Of course, this doesn't happen always and I can always compromise, and so can the DMs I play witg. Making a character whose main class stat is dumped or refuses to use a major class feature can be crippling, but it's just a matter of balancing with these facts in mind.

If I ever met anyone that is like this in my D&D game then character agency is no longer going to benefit them. For example, if the player has been a problem then I would send a divination wizard that has conveniently rolled a nat 1 this morning and used it against him.

I mean to clarify if he was rolling 1d8 per bolt of scorching Ray, he was nerfing himself and you should have let him keep doing it lol. Scorching Ray fires 3 rays dealing 2d6 per Ray.

Sorry, this is what happens when I don’t have a script. I meant to say he was using D8 damage dice. So he was rolling 2d8 per ray

iirc in the MM (Monster Manual) Vampire Spawn are the result of a vampire draining someone to death and after a night they raise as a vampire spawn. Also I think it mentions in the MM that they are essentially thrall bound to the the vampire that turned them.... A bit like how zombies are obedient and blunt to a necromancer and they can't become vampires until they drink the blood of their master. Also as someone who read some LoL and haven't watched Arcane yet its safe to say If I was the DM I'd have to refuse that because trying to convert games into DnD can be a headache especially one I'm not too familiar with. Also Wizard describes becoming a "Undead King" n stuff that's really just Viego, no joke it sounds like he's ripping off a LOL character and using it for power fantasy rubbish. This brings me to my personal philosophy, refrain from power fantasies be you player or DM because that is a multi headed hydra of problems

What if you played Curse of Strahd in a way where Strahd is not evil but just bitter over being cursed for whatever reason, and the goal of the game becomes not killing Strahd but breaking whatever curse was placed upon him

I have played with same group more or less for over 30 years now,w e have had some ppl come and go. Lesson learned is every one of us have been bad dms with DNPC, that guy, the edge lord and so on. We have never been creepy toward female players, but we had guy fingering his GF during the game once. Thing is we have all been the player that could be in horror story, but we have all also been the guy which save a game. We know each other inside out and we invite new players and it mostly go smooth. Some of the new players can be confused if they have played with DMs which basically railroad or strict campaigns where we free roam and sandbox in the world DM describe and run, the adventure is what the players self invent, this demand the DM we have need to be good at improvise. because we all know each other well we can explore issues which could disturb players which just jump in to campaign. We have played cannibalistic evil cultists or genocidal fascists who had slaves of both the normal variety and sexual variety. Those time we play evil ppl we often have goal that they shall get justice served to them. My fascist was hanged for his crime against humanity and we saw it as successful campaign. With that said we don't go in to details when we get in on issues as rape or torture.
