Nice Guy Forces D&D Players into His CREEPY DMPC Fan Fiction - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

It's here. It's finally here. The Airship Story is upon us once again.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

The fact the DM’s idea of revenge against the OP included having her raped when the OP is also a woman says… a lot of bad things about DM as a person-not helped by his nice guyisms. This is a man who should not be near women or girls.

Ah yes…the Airship story, THE premier RPG Horror Story It’s got everything: -DMPCs hogging the spotlight from players -impossibly difficult dungeons and bosses -railroading (via the airship and the OPs god telling her to get back on the airship instead of shaking up the status quo) -plot holes up the wazoo -unsubtle and unsolicited flirting -using excuses for yourself and your bad DMing -Weird sexual stuff (hello random orgy sessions!) -the…..r word It’s just missing racism and homophobia, but it’s close to getting the whole RPG Horror Story BINGO card filled out

The now-infamous airship story is an extreme example of something I see a lot from DMs, and something I personally had to deal with in a campaign that recently ended: DMs who are only really interested in telling "their story," and only really see the players as a captive audience. The fact that he couldn't stop his BS even when it was endangering his personal relationships with his friends is telling, to say the least.

Honestly, I’ve been thinking a lot about this campaign, and I think I could fix it. My airship campaign would start out just like the original: the party is trapped on an airship, forced to serve a bunch of obnoxious, overpowered DMPCs-but then, a bunch of bad guys show up and murder all the DMPCs, leaving the party on an airship full of corpses. This is where we diverge from the story, though. The party now has their own airship. The world is their oyster. They might want to track down the people who killed the DMPCs and either try to defeat them or team up with them. They might want to explore the plot hooks that were carefully hinted at by the missions the DMPCs sent them on. They might just want to explore all the mysterious locales Eberron has to offer! What they do next is entirely up to them.

I'm a DM, and I do have one DMNPC that is most assuredly an "OH SH*T" button for my players. However, I've put strict limits on his use. 1 use per week, and he only heals my players to half health or resurrects a dead PC to 1/4 health. He doesn't attack or otherwise interfere as he is a new god with just over the minimum requirements for followers and the whole campaign is him setting the PCs up to be his champions in the mortal world. He also can't act on his own accord. He HAS to be summoned by one of the members of the party in a truly desperate moment. Most importantly, my players like it.

Only to realize that they aren't the heroes they thought...and that the legendary party are the BBEGs...planning on useing their apprentices as part of their plan. The players can try and make their escape and work out how to stop a powerful group like that.

I’d heard this story before, without the epilogue. I’m amazed how many players need a interactive tour of the Nine Hells, to realize that quitting a bad DM is always an option. I’m glad this group found a good one afterward. After experiences like this, some players never come back to the table. This guys biggest sin, however is using diagnosed mental health disorders as a crutch, or to justify bad behaviors. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues for literal decades, it makes me sick to see people doing this. 😡

A healthy individual knows the difference and can break from one to the other without much mental bleedthrough ("How's it going?" "Eh, still alive." ) An unhealthy person can't help but treat the 'E' space as they would the 'I' space. Many people in the world have some toxic grievances who still have friends. Holy crap. First time hearing it, but this airship story is nightmarish beyond belief. It reminds me of a few forum RPs I did over a decade ago. One player would just railroad everyone into his own plots, but would not give anyone else ANY agency. Wanted to be an antagonistic? He would create a character specifically to counter you. Got creative with combat or defenses for a base? Nope, his characters just ignored every monster, trap or tactical play, and smuggly go on about how it was child's play. Tried to create an event to move the plot in a direction that wasn't his? Negative, His BBEG would turn up and smash that to shit. And possibly the worst thing about it, was all his characters were the exact same! Same smugness, same overpowered BS, same dark, brooding edgelord no one could ever possibly understand! There was also his weird obsession with black satin sheets, but honestly, I had noped out of there by the point it got too bad. But I've gotta say, and least my guy never did the [REDACTED] epilogue with anyone. That I know of, at least.

Said it on CritCrab's video, I'll say it here (hopefully better): "Someone signed this contract on your behalf and it is binding whether you consent or not. You remain here, at the beck and call of your 'employers'. Your employers may, at their discretion, verbally and physically abuse you, pressure you into sexual acts and shame you if you refuse, isolate you in solitary confinement, refuse you contact with the outside world (including your family), refuse to let you leave, and if you attempt to escape, kill you. You have no right to your own wealth, the fruits of your labors, or any credit for your work. You have no legal recourse, no right to terminate the contract, no privacy, and no right to your own personality or preferences." What an appropriate story for this month, much less Valentine's Day.

Imagine, being trapped in the god of sphincters because you stole a pastry? Yes, the battle scars of being forced out of a smelly god orifice by using alchemy to produce a super laxative greatly scarred me and several other players to the point we burned the dms notebook in a trashcan and vowed we would never let him dm again. We likely should have known we were in for a real treat when he said the name of his homebrew world was "Dystopara" but we all thought, hey it's his first time! The premise was the world had been wracked by war, all cities were in ruins, but small communities were built from and on the ashes. It sounded pretty cool, but then after four sessions of acting as freelance salvagers he introduced his gods. One was a god of food and fine dining? Another was a god of reproduction and rebirth, I think? It was the last, and most powerful, a god of justice and punishment that had destroyed our will to play and caused our characters to suffer mass trauma; the mother f'n god of mf'n sphinters. I guess he wanted to showcase his pantheon or something, it didn't go so well. TLDR: An a-hole trapped us in a shthole that ruled over shtholes on a shthole planet with a very telling name that all of us are pretty sure he did not google once. (AKA: Shtception ^^)

I saw it happen once and I remember feeling it was incredibly petty on the DM's part. Usually I just come up with an excuse to say their characters had to leave to justify their absence, so they get a respectful exit. You just don't do... *that* in my opinion.

I had what looked like a airship terror story once. We were essentially conscripted into the King's Hand adventuring ship, if our backstories didn't give us a good reason to be there. The crew, and the first mission, was exactly like the one above. There were more than these, but I rememeber a goliath that killed three dragons with his bare hands at the same time. Someone who bound a prince of hell to their sword as a prison, someone who outwitted an elder fae, and a literal demigod. The party is given a mission, despite not being experienced enough for the "easy mission beneath the King's Hand". No way the party could win, dmpcs save us, then mock us. Then that night, the airship is attacked by literally a swarm of dragons, both chromatic and metallic, alongside custom dragons, like deep ocean dragons. Dragon slaying goliath got both hands bitten off then was hit with scalding water that boiled him like a prawn. Demon slayer man was frozen in a block of ice, then hadn green dragon acid slowly melt through the ice onto his skull. The demon was freed...and then imediaty devoured whole by a black dragon. Demigod started to fly around and summon lightning bolts...and was atomized by the combined breath attack of over 20 different dragons. The ship, understandably, went down. The only survivors other than the party were the captain, who was a legendary rouge pirate, but lost both legs and an arm in the dragon attack, one novice healer, a humble dwarven engineer, and a kobold stowaway that the party instantly adopted (and the unofficial party leader married, much to everyone's delight.) The campain was exploring this continent we were marrooned in, gathering the tools, materails, and crew needed to fix the ship to get home, while also figuring out what is going on with the dragons of this land. And, as it turned out, those heroes had each slighted the dragons in their own way, as well as disrupted their attempts to consolidate into their own kingdom. (Dragons in this setting were near extinction, so putting aside their diferences in order to repopulate made sense.) In the end, we became the new King's Hand...in service to the Dragon King. Overall, a very fun campain.

I’ve said this piece before on other tellings of this story, but I like Eberron, so this detail of the story always gets me. The part where the sorcerer’s god comes down from heaven to tell her his will is antithetical to the spirit and the themes of Eberron as a setting. Eberron is effectively a post world war setting which has more in common with the 1920s than the Middle Ages. What form divinity takes, what the gods are like, and whether they even exist at all are unknown and unanswerable questions. Several of the religions of the world can only truly exist in a place like Eberron. The Silver Flame is effectively the force from Star Wars, the Blood of Vol reject the gods entirely, and the elves worship their eternally preserved undead ancestors. Eberron is a setting where being a cleric, a Paladin, or even a Druid actually means something. Being a character of genuine faith in a rapidly modernizing world where there are no answers is one of Eberron’s masterstrokes, and for that reason this one pedantic little detail stands out.

I haven’t played since I bought the worst 2nd edition monster manual. There were almost no women playing back then, and if there was one, they had to contend with every worst male archetype you can imagine. Even the most experienced “Gygaxian” was not immune. Almost no one got an introduction to the game or even homebrew content if a girl was playing. I don’t like when people are excluded so I mostly made character sheets back then and played females because they were so rare in game. I became insanely protective of their stories and would get up mid game when someone tried to engage romantically with one of my characters. (My favorite was a home brew Drow Ranger who had a name so unpronounceable for most of the players, that much of the “romance” angles wouldn’t work. She had the unique ability of gaining advantage checks against bluff and diplomacy, but a disadvantage to intimidate and taunt skills if the PC/NPC - inevitably - mispronounced her name). I remember one especially persistent guy who insisted the pronunciation was “Oily” (spelled Oiola) and she tolerated it until the GM brought the character trait up during a combat session (by this time even the DM didn’t know how to pronounce her name). It was my first PK in game (was a crit with a homebrew version of vorpal) beheading the character and ending the session. I never returned after that.

I have DMNPCs who I literally just use to add intrigue. They have been playing chess master in order to get the party together and point them at the BBEG because they physically are unable to stop him due to the immortality spell they used on themselves linked them to the BBEG in a way that if they tried to go after them, they would be turned into rampaging monsters.

Its sad how many races i have to test the waters of a group with before i play, because of how much they've been put in the "sex object," box by the creepier side of the hobby. Even when players weren't, themselves, forcing sexuality upon races, ive experienced the flipside of people being belligerently angry at me for playing a race because they automatically assumed id be playing the character as a nymphomaniac, and REFUSED to accept assurances or evidence to the contrary. (Weirdly happens a lot if i play a goblin)

Kind of reminds me of my first dnd campagn it was online from reddits lfg and I eventualy ghosted. Basicaly there were only two players allowed to do anything relevanr, get anything more than the time of day from npcs and get non cursed magic items, effects or pets. The rest of us got to fuck right off during any roleplay, be brushed off by every npc, have out decsions and precautions retcomned if the dm felt like it, be hopelessly undergeared, and be cursed or killed off by anything because it was all balanced to be fought by the two geared up magiced up players. I left ofter the dm decoded to keep a ruling that i was stunned for a round even though i wanted to use a feature to roll again and one of the favorite players said "well you weren't going to do anything useful anyway. The dm had even told me that being new to dnd wasnt going to be a problem.

Why did OP stay in that game so long? You aren't having fun, stage a full on mutiny and leave the table. Give the DM an ultimatum, either provide one good session next time or you're out. And stick to it. Leave him to find another group to harass.

See this is why you don't walk on eggshells just because someone has mental health issues. I've got mental health issues of my own, and I've been to enough CBT, 1 on 1, and group therapy to realize that MOST people have some mental health issues. I'm all for being sympathetic and understanding, but I will not ever force myself to suffer in an effort to coddle someone else, and I don't expect anyone else to do it for me.

  • @Telawin

So, I'm a big fan of taking bad ideas and making them good. And honestly the part of this story which has the most potential is the NPC's on the airship getting slaughtered. Imagine this: the party wakes up in the night because the ship is jostled. They go to investigate to find the usually crowded ship is practically silent... Going up on deck they'd see in the darkness the person at the helm slumped over the wheel... Going over to investigate they'd find his throat slit and they'd realize that's the thing that'd woken them up, the ship getting knocked off course. Combat would start with the assassins and they'd have to work quick or they'd crash. The players now have an airship if they could stop it crashing. But they'd need to be able to fuel it. Figure out who can actually operate it. Maybe deal with law enforcement who might assume they killed the crew to take the ship. Lots of potential opportunities for story, plot hooks, and challenges

If I started a game I would do what he did and had some BBEG kill all of over powered characters and say they where "too weak" for his time. It would show how scary the BBEG was but I wouldn't make the npcs level 20, and instead they would be 5-13 to show there is still hope for them.

I have to say, I am still a sapling DM, only having run fewer than a half dozen games (but played in more), and I'm still guilty of some CHOO CHOO railroading where it's not appropriate here and there. And I'm not the most gifted at improv, so I struggle sometimes to entertain the prompting I get from players. I love tabletops though, and so I'm working on doing what I can to always be improving (I'm even developing my own system). THAT SAID, I have to hold onto hope that I'm not approaching the level of terror that Airship DM is foisting upon people. It's a good cautionary tale for all of us fledgelings out here. What's really sad is that I imagine a lot of these terrible DMs and players that lovely Crispy reads to us about are clearly crying out for help. They're grasping for some sense of control, competence, etc. that they just don't feel in their normal life, and the only way they can deal with it is to "work it out" on the tabletop. There's a fine line between enjoying a power fantasy and NEEDING the power fantasy, y'know? If you're concerned you might be one of these people, please consider therapy! It's helped me a ton. You can start just once a month if it's hard to afford, and also check to see if your health insurance covers it if you have health insurance, because some policies do! Search for "mental health counseling" and "outpatient mental health services," etc. Thank you for being a good story rat, Crispy!

If I were to gut every creepy, controlling, & unfun element from this debacle, yet keep the airship of op npcs an element of plot: each has a niche tactic that combos with others, but everytime the party is out on a journey, they're escorted by ONE veteran who's locked down by some conveniently placed trap that likely won't stop the party so they can actually play. A few dungeons in & this happening everytime, it becomes clear the vets are being targeted & the party has become the wild card that's saving their lives. Insert a full campaign of heroism & world saving where the vets are allocated to airship crew for the party here.
