Entitled "NiCE gUY" Has a Bit of a Victim Complex - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

My last D&D game was a tear-jerker, which isn't something I get to say often. We're getting ready to wrap up the campaign and I'm definitely not ready. In any case, I hope you guys enjoyed the cringe this time around. I had lots of fun working on the edit and the new background.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Twenty years ago one of my coworkers invited me to play D&D with her and her husband. She was the DM, I was a half-giant barbarian, and he was some kind of amphibious anthropomorphic dog thing monk. After a somewhat awkward session 0/1 we began to get comfortable with each other and settle into our roles, but as the campaign progressed it felt more and more like my character was taking center stage, to the point where my backstory began to tie up with the main plot. Believe it or not, this was making me somewhat uncomfortable, as it felt like the DM was focusing more attention on me than on her own husband. After concluding a major story arc that prominently featured my character's family, I suggested that maybe we should do something where the monk could take center stage for once. Dude looked me straight in the eye and said, "My family and monastery are 400 meters beneath the ocean. How long can you hold your breath?" To this day I am certain that he deliberately designed his character with the specific intent that he could never be in the spotlight. Crafty bastard.

As a DM's wife, the only advantage a DMs SO should have is scheduling. Even that shouldn't be taken advantage of for dumb reasons. There will be times when the group needs to understand that the DM is a life partner first and a DM second. There are nights I need him to take care of me or we have a family event. That being said, the only look I get behind the DM screen is the hard work, the self doubt, and what was come up with on the spot after the fact. Being the DMs partner is a responsibility. Telling them how great they're doing and what could be improved. Be the voice of the player as best you can to the DM when needed, but always having the DMs back. You don't get special treatment in game.

Honestly, if a paid game like that Wife Favoritism situation was one of mine, I’d be asking for a refund and never meeting with those folks again. I actually play in a game where the DM and another player are dating. They are great people, there’s no favoritism, and I think it’s easily the BEST game I’ve been a player in. So you can play a game where a player is dating/married to a DM easily, as long as it doesn’t become like the forst story, or even the opposite of the dm treating their partner even more harshly than the rest of the party.

The bit about charismatic characters really does play into whether the player is charismatic. Unfortunately i play with someone who only wants to play charismatic characters, but struggles with role play. Imagine talking to an npc. Character says something. Doesnt get the answer theyre looking for. Gets pushy with npc. Now they dont want to talk at all. Player gets mad. Cycle repeats ad nauseam. And they dont understand that theyre the problem.

Chalk up another win for Session 0 weeding out a bad fit for the campaign? Wife story: That's not a marriage between equal partners. That's a toxic relationship! Railroaded story: Since Crispy said "all together now"... Adversarial DMing is lame DMing. Nice Guy story: Uh... that initially sounded like a persecution complex. Bard's behavior does make sense beyond that though. The aggressive behavior could stem from something that threatening their creepy delusions of "romance". From the sound of it, I'm assuming this was an online game. If that's so, I'm hoping Rogue has been very, VERY careful with how much Bard knows about their personal life.

In theory, there's nothing wrong with pursuing a romantic subplot like the one from the last story, but given the *incredibly* sensitive nature of it all, you should definitely get consent from all the players first. No matter how interesting it might be in theory, there are plenty of people who might nope out of it simply because they don't want to deal with that kind of traumatic baggage, and frankly? I'd be one of them.

So college was the first time I got to really indulge my 'nerdy' side and play tabletop games. My spouse introduced me to TTRPG and a one-on-one DnD campaign I ran for them ended up being the inspiration for our child's name irl. Sure, not every couple can play DnD together- sometimes because the couple itself doesn't work in general, and sometimes simply because the couple has different things they want from a game and understand that together. But each couple is unique and if you both share the same desires in game or, at least, can be supportive while following your own interests in game- playing together can be really amazing. Honestly part of why I love watching a lot of Dimension 20 seasons is seeing some of the couples play together.

As far as Bruce playing an inquisitive rogue as a human lie detector, it's not really min maxing. The whole conceit of the subclass is that you're particularly good at telling when people are lying to you and rooting out secrets through observation, mechanically the subclass is built around the insight skill (both the level three subclass features center around insight, and one directly relates to telling if people are lying to you). The problem with the way Bruce was playing his character was that he insisted this made his lie detection abilities infallible; which no, that's just not true. There's no mechanical way to make insight succeed 100% of the time, and the game would be pretty boring if you could; you have a good shot at reading people's intentions and falsehoods as an inquisitive rogue, better than most people (and in some ways, better than zone of truth, since it's an always on ability, you don't have to cast a spell which means the person you're trying to insight doesn't know that you don't trust them, and it's a contested roll rather than a save which means legendary resistance can't apply to it), but it's not a guarantee. Hell, if I had a choice I'd want an inquisitive rogue with expertise in insight *and* zone of truth up, there's plenty of good synergy to be had there; the rogue could try an get a read on anyone that made the wisdom save and the people that didn't make the save would be compelled to speak truthfully. Railroading your party into your way or the highway is never good, it's only going to lead to conflict and bad play experiences, especially when your skill at something inevitably eventually fails and ends up adversely affecting everyone.

It's a pretty fun class for the right campaign. Whether it's the right one is another thing entirely.

Sounds like that DM in his wife need a divorce, there's absolutely no excuse for her to act that childish over a game.

It's possible to ttrpg as a couple and make it work. My last group consisted of mostly couples, and my hubby and i play a D&D game at our LGS on Saturdays.

2 dating players I've seem work well but there has always been favoritism when one was a DM. Some times the DM doesn't realize it though.

Feel like the DM has no right to be running paid games with his wife involved like that. "Hey, come pay to be in this game. But also, one of the players has the ultimate authority to just kick you out."

About being in a game with someone you are in a relationship with. Me and my gf pretty much flirted through Rpg. We met by a common friend and each offered the other to play in our campagne (she is a barbarian in my 5e game and I'm a samurai in her PF1e game). And we have had several one shot in team in addition plus an other PF2e where I'm the MJ and she's a player. Everything is working great in each of those. Once the game start we are just players among the other.

8:39 The real horror story here is their marriage. I have my wife in every group I DM, and she makes every group better by basically being my "in" into the group. I need an instigator for a slow party? She plays an instigator. I need someone to bring them into the roleplay and lore? She whips out the Bard. What i'm saying is, you can either have a partner, or a miserable marriage. This being paid is the cherry on top of the awful.

It’s totally possible for romantic couples to play together, in my corrent campaign of 7 years, we have 2 couples: me and my partner and the dm and his partner and never had any type of problems. I think is all about being a good human being 😅

"cOuPLes sHouLn'T pLaY dND, iT nEvER wOrKs oUt!" 4 out of 8 members of Critical Role are married to each other and they have successfully made a franchise from their DnD roleplay group. Hell in campaign 2 Ashley's character Vasha FLIRTS with Beau (Misha's character) and Beau flirts back, and Matt Mercer is 100% okay with it.
