Getting Nuclear REVENGE on a Wannabe D&D “ProtAgoniST” - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Had a ton of fun with the edit for this video. Summer is quickly rolling in and that means that the weather is heating up over here. Last time this happened I was in the middle of the biggest move in my life and your support is what made that possible, so hand-to-my-heart, thanks. Anyway, back to Horizon. This expansion isn't going to play itself.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Second Story: The fact that the DM built the entire story around Protag to the point where once he died, there was nothing else for any of the other players to do really says something about that DM. I mean, that lich is still a problem; maybe the party goes to deal with him, now that the supposed chosen hero who was the only one that could stop him is dead? Sounds like a pretty okay plot to me... No? I mean, it sounds to me like this guy was told by Protag to end the campaign now that his special boy was dead, and just caved to that. Also, that little racist dig at the end... cool. So the guy created his own nation in a world full of apparent racists, and seemingly made it another human-centric country rather than giving more equality to those similar to the party he adventures with, after seeing how unfairly they're treated throughout the world? Cool, very cool, great guy to run a country.

The story really made me appreciate my DM because our game is weirdly similar. In our game the main villains are very humans number 1 and doing some good cult and terrorist activists to frame and kill other races. My character being the only human but also the face of our party makes the social encounters very fun. On top of that about half way into the game my character who is like a 20 year old pact of the tome warlock who thought they were just a really bad wizard was told by their patron that the end of the world was coming soon and only she could stop it. She reacted to this news with anxiety, anger, stress, confusion, etc. they just wanted to cast silly spells with their friends and help people. It’s been super fun because the party dynamic didn’t really change because I was already the support of the party. Warlock spell slots are great for full party bless and cure wounds, so they were already big on protecting her, now they are just protecting her with divine justice. and I was already the face of the party so now I just more or less have an extra dialogue option where I (affectionately) pull rank or just make up legends about “the chosen one” because no one really told her what it means and until her patron tells her to stop it she’s just going to make up whatever helps in that situation. Gods I love games.

There was a story where an IRL death was handled well in CoS. I don't remember who covered it but I remember the gist of it. Group of people know each other for 15+ years. One dude passes. Party had been playing CoS. GM noticed everyone had trouble grieving. After a few months and the campaign eventually resuming, after long months of thinking and planning, GM decided he'd cross the line. When the party had their back against the wall, an angel descended. The NPC looked like the PC of the deceased party member. NPC gave a few encouraging words before cutting Strahd's hand off and walking back into the light. Party found a collective second wind, thought back, defeated Strahd, and then everyone had a cathartic cry.

I once knew a DM whose game I almost joined who criticized my character's backstory for being inspired by Ghost of Tsushima's Jin Sakai and the "Ghosts" of the multiplayer game mode. The character was a Reborn samurai who was assassinated but revived by an old man with supernatural powers. In return for her revival, the man, who called himself "The Storyteller" (a reference to Gyozen) asked her to "make a good story with a better ending" AKA live an interesting life. The Storyteller left a mark on her back (the word "yurei" in kanji) that lets him see what she is doing, and therefore is learning the story she is creating as she lives her second chance at life. But no, it was a "rip-off" of Ghost of Tsushima! Glad I left that guy's game

I was playing a warlock in a campaign that was a servant of The Raven Queen. I gave him a trait that he absolutely abhorred necromancy in any form, as the souls of the dead must abide in their final resting places, and nowhere else, so he didn't have any necromancy spells. We ended up coming across another follower of The Raven Queen who had some sort of undead familiar. I didn't just stop the whole campaign and complain "my Lady wouldn't allow this sort of abomination!" Or anything like that. He just kind of shut down for a bit and had to pray to ask his Lady for guidance. Clearly she knows better than he does, so it became a moment of self introspection rather than outward anger.

For that last story, with a character that was so important, i dont think they would risk their own death simply over morality. I think a paladin would commune with the cleric over such an important controversy, and ask the necromancer to explain the process behind the ogre's reanimation. If it were against the code, the paladin could probably inform the necromancer "For sake of my faith and service to the gods, you used illusion magic to hide this sacrilege from my eyes. Dispose of this unholy monstrosity if it survives the combat with the dragon." If not, then paladin could have probably said something like "... I admire your methods for making evil serve the cause of good in spite of an unwillingness in life. So long as the body doesnt contain its original owner's soul. Let us ignore this issue and press on." Or smth like that. Anything is better than trying to kill the necromancer over it.

Plus, there's always the option of DISCUSSING IT WITH THE PARTY. IF that player felt that there was an issue relating to their character, they could have just brought it up like: "I got a problem. My character would react to this action pretty violently, but I don't want that. I just need to know some things and some time to come up with a response to this." Of course, that'd require someone who is actually able to communicate with other people and who doesn't let their out of character thoughts influence their in character acts. Or just someone conscious of the fact that PCs shouldn't want to kill eachother unless both players are very skilled at navigating that. Clearly, OP in that last story is not the type of person to think of that.

Had a similar but less Ahole version of undead argument within my group once. One of the factions in my homebrew setting use undead made from folks who'd given their consent pre-morten (they got a bunch of perks like reduced taxes and free life insurance if they agreed to this). The players had a bit of the chat about it with an NPC to check everything about it was legit, then all but one were cool with it. Oddly the one who wasn't okay was the most conventionally evil of the group. That player was about the leave the group for work-related reasons, so I suspect he was deliberately disagreeing to justify his character separating.

The only good thing I can say about the last story is that it did open up an interesting moral dialogue in terms of the DM's lore. Kinda reminds me of "The Black Arts on Trial", a book in Skyrim where mages are arguing the merits of whether necromancy is merely a tool or whether it's an evil practice, taking into account how multiple schools of magic actually touch on some of the same conceptualized "evil" that necromancers are said to practice. Interesting stuff. I love it when there are these kinds of debates, but imo, something like this should be either purely IC or handled as an intelligent lore discussion ooc.

We once had a LG paladin and a NE necromancer cleric coming to session zero. We as players looked at each other, realized there was a conflict brewing there, laughed about it, and tried to find a way so both of our characters could be in the party. Ended up being an epic, RP-driven character development arc on both sides that led to an amazing game.

I’ve played paladins who are all about vanquishing evil, but I also understand a broad interpretation of what goodness is. In my friend’s Dungeon of the Mad Mage game my paladin, who was the team leader at the time, befriended a community of goblins, and a group of hobgoblins, as well as a team of duergar explorers and a community of fish folk (locathah?) even making binding promises. I mean, this poster was so invested in their own “lawful stupid” they didn’t even mention the necromancer’s alignment. I mean, in the Diablo universe the necromancer is a hero of the light in three games.

  • @Triggernyar

Lawful stupid is infuriating. Like... The proper response if your character believes the necromancy is an evil act in this context is: "We fight this dragon, and you immediately dispel that abomination afterwards. We're going to have a long talk afterwards, and you'd better have a strong case lest I smite you myself." Fight the dragon, then have a really awesome RP discussing the nature of the necromancy, the reasons behind the paladin's logic, and overall a chance to RP a scenario that could lead to an awkward alliance based on the previous understanding between the two. The Paladin can even maintain his suspicion on the necromancer. It could lead to fun interactions down the line! I've played a character with a strong dislike for another PC. The peak of the disagreement led to my character hiring an NPC brute to scare and mug the other player after a tournament that he helped my character win by cheating. My character was not in on the plan to cheat and got upset when he found out. As a person, I knew the player of that character was a wily sort, and would pull off some shenanigans. We inadvertently learned a secret about him that none of us as players knew (which was intended to be discovered at some point). It ended with my character getting caught in the ploy, and it didn't even become an argument. The other PC willingly gave the money to the NPC as the NPC was the one who was cheated against and it just seemed fair after the case was made. As for the shenanigans themselves, he got a great axe slammed next to his head as a wake up call for the intimidation, and he used illusions to run away while leaving us facing a duplicate of himself completely unaware while he got the rest of the party. The NPC became a hired tank for our team of squishies even, and a romance option for my character.

Wizard: "You'll have to trust me that I'm doing this with everyone's best interests in mind." Paladin: "Sure. Go ahead." ... Paladin: "You're evil and should be arrested. Cleric! Help me arrest him!" ... Paladumb: "How come I got kicked just for arguing with everyone including the GM? It's not my fault my character is holier than the gods themselves." I mean, honestly, the only sane response - when you're a bunch of low-ish level characters off to fight a dragon and your wizard animates a recently-killed monster to use as dragon fodder - is "how many more of them can you make? Do you need us to gather spell components or kill more monsters for you?"

I played a Grave Domain cleric who freely used mindless undead throughout my campaign. My character saw dead bodies as nothing more than meat as the important part (the soul) had long since departed. He was vehemently against any form of sentient undead for exactly the same reason the DM here gave. Binding souls (in my characters case even willing ones) into their former bodies was a violation of the natural cycle.

Third Story: I mean, if Paint left the party and headed out the exit of the labyrinth, and Mother wanted them to stay that badly, the door of the labyrinth should've shut in front of them; Mother should've held the key to escape at all. I'm not going to begrudge the DM on this, as it was his first time, but if this is repeat behavior, the DM could've used this as an opportunity to prevent Paint from running from a big fight again and forced them to stay and fight. But why roll up a fighter if you're just going to run from combat? At least make a ranger or rogue, something that can do ranged attacks to keep your character away from melee? Or just stand and fight like you're supposed to? It's a weird choice for a player to make.

Woah, I'm here faster than usual. 😅 Thanks for the fresh Video Crispy! Edit: That third story where someone referred to as Paint, abandoned the party? Ouch. I played in a game where our Rogue did that! The rogue was always Roleplayed as being literally dirty and cowardly. So we got into this fight with 3 Gorgons and didn't have a way to cure petrification. However, our PCs didn't know what the monsters could do until it was too late, and my monk was not the sort of person to leave a party member behind. So when someone got petrified in round 1 and the rogue ran away, it was just my monk and I think our squishy wizard left standing. My monk wanted to subdue or avoid the Gorgons so she could grab the petrified party member before running. We both went down within a round or two. The entire time the DM asked the rogue player what they were doing, and she always replied "I keep on running." And the campaign ended there because "Its what my character would do." We had had those characters for at least a year of weekly sessions. I still firmly feel that those moments are when you let your character /grow/. Sure the Rogue was always a coward. But after a year of being with those party members she didn't care about them enough to even *try* to be brave? Smh.

I really love that take on Necromancy. It changes world to world too. One of my favorite takes of Necromancy is that it's less "control the undead" and more "control over life", like in pathfinder 2e, where the Heal spell IS Necromancy, or the old Sega game Rings of Power, where the Necromancers both heal and harm. They're also really rad cause their most powerful spell summons a giant skeleton head with a top hat.

1:18 First, that sounds a lot like the premise for the campaign I started (a series of interconnected one-shots), though the players all play the same characters. Second, I assume I'm not the only player who intentionally borrows from established IP for character ideas. In 1 campaign I play a swashbuckler rogue who is modeled on a mix of Westley and Inigo from The Princess Bride; in another game that just started, my character is basically Uncle Iroh from ATLA. The goal isn't to just come up with something completely unique, but to play what you want to play and make the character your own. 5:06 I don't see anything necessarily wrong with a character becoming the leader of a nation/kingdom/etc. However, the party needs to be on board with that, and that role can't take away player agency for the rest of the party. In one campaign, our Lizardfolk Ranger is charged with rebuilding his people, making him the sort-of king of the Lizardfolk. However, he is still just another member of the party (none of whom are also Lizardfolk); the most exciting effect it had on the party is that he convinced one of the Lizardfolk groups to give the party their land to found our city-state. 17:15 If the party agrees to get out, that's one thing; if a player just runs away, that's something entirely different. And I don't know about anyone else, but when I make a melee character, my whole goal is to be the tank and protect the rest of the party. 20:57 That paladin player doesn't understand how to be a part of a team. Also, why is it always with paladins that people suddenly lose their ability to be a team player???

As an artist, I’m calling BS. They only told us what differences M’s character had to another character, but nothing as to what was so similar. They were referring to a drawing and not a character sheet. In fact, I would even say that they checked off enough differences to suggest M’s character was a lot more original than they were letting on. Artists, even professional artists, will use existing characters for a base. It’s called a reference point. It’s not that uncommon. Even animators will use existing animations for their base. There’s a scene from Disney’s Mr. Toad that is a one to one copy of a scene from Disney’s The Jungle Book (or visa versa). Some people call it lazy, but it takes a lot of time to draw up and color pictures, especially for an animation and when there are deadlines to meet, they’ll use what they have to cut corners and meet those deadlines. It sounds like M’s character may have had a pose similar to this other character. Again, not that uncommon. I have a lot of images saved that I use for references, because taking something I see in my mind and putting it down on paper isn’t as easy as some people think it is. Don’t shame artists for doing this.

Oh god that paladin in the last story reminds me of the paladin that completely derailed my entire character concept (I was basically making a character who was nice, friendly, and did the "right" thing but didn't see undead and necromancy as evil, just an efficient use of resources) because he wanted to play a Lawful Stupid paladin. I went from my concept being creating my own undead minions using long-dead skeletons to...needing to summon *extraplanar* skeletons. Because he would merely frown at that rather than try to smite me on the spot. In PF1e this meant a completely different set of feats. My necromancy specialization had to be redirected towards Inflict and Curse spells. Which, looking back is a bit weird: It's wrong to animate a corpse to fight for the side of good, but he had no problem with me PERMANENTLY CURSING PEOPLE and ripping the soul out of their body while they were still alive. I'm still kinda proud of how the character ended up, with a really neat weapon that I think I might include in another campaign if I get a chance (an elysian bronze longspear of spell storing, and I'd put Bestow Curse into it) but THAT GUY really made the campaign hell. We were at odds a lot especially because we were both divine charisma casters (I was an oracle) and he INSISTED on being the Baron/Duke/King, even though he was a frontline fighter and most likely to die (in Kingmaker your best option for the king is a cleric/oracle, sorcerer, or other charisma caster. A paladin can work too but it's highly recommend you use a goddamn shield in combat rather than charge off on your own while riding a mount, out of range of the bard and oracle's support abilities.)

The last one, I have to say that it all depends on how you use necromancy. Spare the Dying is necromancy but no one complains when it gets your character stable and most clerics have Toll of the Dead, a cantrip that causes necro damage. Hell, you can argue revivify, Resurrection, and True Resurrection are necromancy because you're messing with the balance of life and death. In a war one shot I ran, I had the necromancer general who was in charge of the party give them skeletons and zombies to balance out the fight and allowed them to give them items as weapons or basically wrist guns along with armor because I made the encounter with three people in mind and one person dipped
