Unfortunately, it was way too late to stop Cleric from leaving. Yeah, she said "scheduling", but that is what people say when they don't want to say the real reason. I know that this is much easier to say than do, but Paladin should have been removed from the voice chat the moment he attempted PvP.

Paladin gets a bad rap because there’s just too many players who like the power that Paladins offer but without any of the principles of what they embody. The players themselves likely need a talking to that reminds them that, irregardless, they need to be working with a group. If they are unable to do that, they need to fuck off. Same with the Rogue players.

Honestly I feel like it was an overreaction from the dm trying too hard to control what kind of story is being told. I think having things like that can add spice to a campaign. Having a sort of antagonist in the party is interesting sometimes, maybe other players could have been more involved in defending the tiefling creating a sort of push and pull dynamic.

  • @pinkpugilist

    @pinkpugilist

    9 ай бұрын

Okay, I dunno how the DM not letting the Paladin straight up murder his companion is "overreacting". It was clear the Paladin's player had it out for this person, either because they didn't like the character she made, or he just wanted to bully the new girl. No one gleefully says "it's not pvp if she's not fighting back" because they have the game's interest in mind. COULD a Paladin having to get over his close-minded views to accept his tiefling companion be a worthwhile story? Of course! I literally had a similar situation in one of my campaigns. The setting was a very church-led country, so my tiefling literally had to hide who she was. And there was tension when her secret got out between her and the Paladin. But with time, he realized she was still the supportive bard that she had been before her secret was out. That wouldn't have been interesting or fun if the Paladin just gutted my character immediately.

@@pinkpugilist I'm glad to see that others agree that the concept, has plenty of legs. It's almost natural that a Paladin might be racist or mistrustful of Teiflings. There is a whole lot you can do with that. Heck some of the best duos, start as people that hate each other at first and get over their issues. That said, this has to all be above board and agreed with with everyone. And just straight up killing another player is wrong in every possible way. The Paladin totally got the end he deserved.

These types are sadly recurring if you're any kind of creative- RP, art, fanfic. Put out any kind of open request? Someone who never interacted with you shows up to ask for something their hyperspecific thing (even if you set out rules beforehand). Post any kind of fic? 'Hey would you like to write this super specific thing that you've never done anything like tonally or in any fandom related to'? And they never want to pay for it. I've done 🔞 art and fic a few times, but for specific people - which I say. Still doesn't stop the choosing beggars from pulling up and then flipping you off when you say 'commissions aren't open'.

I made a summoning druid. Summoning things was my whole gimmick and the DM understood the "they choose" portion of the spell, but decided to let me choose to make things easier for themselves. I decided to make things easier for all of us and had a small list of go-to summons with stat blocks on hand and I made the executive decision to not be an a-hole about it and not to do cheesy things just because. We had fun and a lot of laughs due to animals just popping up out of nowhere in a multitude of settings. I even took a tip from Lord of the Rings and eagled us out of some trouble we were having and never used them again. Unsure where I was going with with this except that it can work, you just have to communicate and respect each other enough not to ruin other's fun.

Exactly. I played a summon focused Shepherd Druid from 3-20 and it was a balancing act a lot of the time but so long as you actually respect your dm and party it can be done well. Takes a bit more work on the players end to have stat blocks prepared and you have to be willing to not always choose only the strongest options but it can be totally reasonable even if the DM let's the player pick.

I like the way pet subclasses have worked in recent publications. Like my battle-smith's steel defender is effectively a feature since I use my bonus action to defend her. Scion 2e also has Followers. Where Followers basically function as equipment for your character. For example, if my character were to order my secretary to go do a bureaucratic thing then I'd roll my attribute + the higher of the follower's rating or my leadership skill for the action with the benefits of whatever traits I bought the follower with. Likewise if I were to build a unit of soldiers.

That last group thought grave clerics were weak because they can't heal well in combat? Speaking as someone who has played one i cannot let that slide. First, it's better to let your allies hit 0 hp before healing them because you heal them for max when you do because of their level 1 ability. Second, making creatures vulnerable to damage at lv 2 and the ability to negate critical hits turning them into normal are game changing abilities. On top of being a cleric, one of the strongest classes in 5e, you know what you can do with 4 of them.

Grave cleric is amazing.

I watched Critical role, and Talesin (I know I’m butchering his name.) Saved his group numerous times from crits, and then using Bane, and Death Ward. They did more healing as well than their other Cleric, nothing wrong with that, she was more a support Cleric as part of the Trickery domain, and used Modify memory once to a massive effect. It was pretty hilarious in one episode, where she had that one spell that lets you divy up 700 HP to characters, that spell cast one time was 30% of her healing over the course of nearly 150 sessions, which is something a lot of people were talking about. Haha came in clutch though. The guy that played the Grave Cleric though prevented a ton of damage over time, with the crit canceling mechanic alone. Haha. As they say, prevention is better than the cure.

My character was nearly killed by Blood Hunters tricking her, so for most of the campaign, she's HATED the Blood Hunter in our party. I've got a bit of a recent horror story. It's not nearly as bad as some of these horror stories here, but it did leave me feeling very dejected and not having much fun at all. My character (Naive elven Druid) watched a young boy get his hand chopped off for stealing food because he was starving, and my character felt horrible for him. I spend 2 weeks IRL planning out a cool side scene with the Fighter (she wanted to vandalize the guard station for unrelated reasons so we figured we'd sneak out together.) Everyone at the table, DM included, KNOWS that I've been planning this scene where I go, find the boy, heal his hand, and give him food. I figure it would be a wonderful character growth moment for my Neutral Good Druid. The session starts, we set out, I Wild Shape into a tiny animal to get in, I pass many checks to get down and investigate some drunk guards. Empty cells. I search the holding cell for paperwork on the boy. Nothing. Confused and not sure where to go, I find Fighter outside and we start making more plans. I start asking if I can Wild Shape into something else to track the smell, etc, and so on. Every idea is met with a No. Finally, the DM sighs and goes, "You guys kinda made something out of nothing. This was never supposed to be a big thing. It's kinda just been a waste of time." Me, naturally frustrated and feeling like an idiot, just replies, "So I don't get any closure? I can't find the boy at all?" Dm just shrugs and repeats that I made a whole deal out of nothing. Angry about this (because DM KNEW I was planning this mini side quest for weeks now) I just concede and check out of the game. I give one word answers and am not feeling creative at all. I hardly even want to play because I feel like I've wasted everyone's time and my own, and I'm torn between crying at the table or just leaving. The next morning (in game) the DM has guards wake us up, looking for whoever vandalized the guard station, and Fighter quickly insists we leave town before they can find us. Only in the middle of town, as I'm sitting there at the table completely uninterested, does the DM make a note to me saying "you see the boy from before with only one hand..." So, in essence, he gives me the little 5 minute scene that I wanted. Only after he made me feel stupid for suggesting it. He allowed me to waste 20 minutes or so looking for clues, telling me it wouldn't happen, and crushed my creativity, just to give me the little scene anyway, with a kind of, "see? All you had to do was wait." sort of jab. It annoyed me a lot. It makes me not want to encourage role-play next time. What could have been a really nice scene of my Neutral Good Druid being a lovely friend to all, turned into a very sour point all because the DM didn't want to RP a quick scene. He's guilty of doing this a lot, actually. This was by far the worst one, but he's had many moments of grinding roleplay to a halt to try and correct me on something that's a non-issue. Like the time I was trying to fill a 10 minute roleplay scene by asking my character's best friend if he had any old photo albums. So instead of getting a cute little scene where we all talk about the past together until the session is up, it comes to a grinding stop so the DM can argue "cameras don't exist. It would be paintings. They don't have photographs here." Instead of simply hand-waving some kind of magic photography or whatever that would allow us to talk about fun moments in character. It's getting really annoying to me and he does not take any amount of constructive criticism, ever. He gets very moody and defensive. It's very childish.

As you leave town, you see the one armed boy hanging dead from the gallows. At the base of the gallows there is a "wanted" board with a painting of the boy pinned to it, among with those of other criminals, with the caption, "wanted dead for thievery." The boys painting has a freshly painted red X drawn through it. This hanging must have taken place as you were busy searching for him. The brawny executioner walks up with his great axe to cut the rope, but as he swings he slips a bit on some ice and instead servers the boy's head which lands squarely at your feet, his mouth slightly ajar and his eyes rolled up into the back of his head. But, dangit, he tries his best and I can't fault him for it! He doesn't attack based off his outside knowledge even when it's obvious he knows it and I really appreciate him for it. I just draw the line at looking up stats during the fught but if anyone is curious they can look it up afterwards. My stance is if there's an issue with metagaming at your table, you can just change up monsters. Heck, it would be cool if you even flavor it like it's a mutant and irregular member of its species. If you're a DM, you can change whatever you want about enemies.

Tiefling being an outcast is an old school D&D thing. I believe it was in the books that, in Forgotten Realms, Tieflings are discriminated against due to their infernal legacy. They were literally seen as the spawn of devils, and a common backstory for a tiefling would be being born of normal parents and somehow born a tiefling and abandoned due to that. It would be similar to Drows due to how their empires looked down on others and enslaved them, hence why Drizzt is considered such an important character. *Anyway, the important thing is that racism is wrong.* Characters do wrong things, especially due to flaws. *As long as the player knows that and makes it clear their character is wrong, I think it's ok to portray that in the story.* Especially if they want to build a redemption arc. That can be a pretty powerful and fulfilling thing for everyone when it pays off. *And obviously, that paladin's player is an absolute prick if the OP is telling the truth.* It clearly wasn't even about the character being a tiefling. They just wanted to exert power onto others in-game, using "that's what my character would do" excuse in the form of the character being a tiefling.

Racist Paladin Story: IMO the problem wasn't even that the character was a racist, it was that the player was an asshole. One of my current characters is a Hobgoblin Samurai who hates elves (except drow, because they also hate other elves) and spends his free time composing haikus about how much elves sucks and hobgoblins rule. But he also doesn't attack elves on sight, though he's still kinda a jerk to them. I've played with the same group for over a year now, so everyone I play with knows I'm not actually bigoted against elves in RL.

Story 1: There's a reason why Fireball is a meme spell, everyone uses it a lot. Its a good source of cheap damage in early levels. But there is a reason why when people aren't jokingly saying "I cast Fireball" to actually use other spells aside from Fireball. Cause what are you gonna do when you finally face an enemy that is resistant or immune to Fire Damage? Unless you're a Sorcerer or have Meta Magic Adept with Transmute Spell, Fireball isn't gonna help...

Unless you make a group specifically for kink dnd, in which case you have an entirely differnt horror story in the works. ●Story one: Abusing summoning spells isnt "cheeky", it's often a boring form of powergaming ●Story two: More or these kind of problem paladins (probladins?) need this kind of ending. ●Story three: Not much to say. Im a big advocate for reskinning stuff, though. Fresh coat of paint cam do a lot for any monster/item/spell. ●Story four: Glad to see OP found a new group in the end. Abusive groups have made a lot of people leave the hobby entirety.

I don't think the idea of hating Tieflings or massively distrusting them is inherently bad (it's spot-on, lore accurate for the standard settings). But I have always thought if you want to play a character like that, (especially if another player is the type of creature in question), it's something that needs to be discussed with the table so everyone can decide if they want to sign on for that kind of thing, and if anyone isn't down for it, then play something else (which is really how every mature or controversial theme should be introduced, with consent from everyone else at the table). And the player who decided to play that character to begin with needs to be ready to deal with the consequences that come from playing a piece of shit person. I had a duergar that was an awful bastard of a man and I made it clear with our group what he was going to be like and that it was fine with me if they just tossed his ass off a bridge at any point because of it too. If a deity had come down and smote him in front of everyone, it would have been hilarious (he got his ass roasted by a gold dragon instead).

The tiefling story is hilarious to me since literally the only evil character I've ever played was an aasimar. And folks you better believe I used the groups' assumption against them. The following is just expanding on that some, so completely unnecessary to read unless you're interested in some character/game story: I don't usually go for evil characters but this was in my group where everyone else frequently did. I was going to be leaving the table for basic in a couple months so I just asked the GM what he needed NPC wise and made one of them as a PC so he could control my character once I left. The whole build was basically all about "looking" harmless and soft while feeding info to the BBEG the whole time (I did NOT have any additional character perks outside of a book that allowed me to communicate with the BBEG). The character was an aasimar druid (so, to that group's way of thinking, a goody goody healer), who looked like a girl (he was actually a guy, the art I drew of him looked gender neutral tho and they just assumed he was a she), who was "disabled" (the group thought he was mute while the character just didn't like them, and didn't hide it well at all, and therefore didn't want to talk to them), and was the child of one of the fairly important "good guys" (who abandoned his son where the BBEG could get his hands on him). The party assumption that my character was good in spite of exponentially increasing evidence to the contrary (I really did try to make it more obvious as the game went on, they were supposed to kill me or at least find me out before I left) was super frustrating for everyone involved and I'd never choose to go such a route again even if the GM begged me to. As a direct result of this game, I wasn't really able to play with this group again whenever I was home because they assumed every single character I played afterwards was also evil. Again, hilarious considering how many NPC heads these AHs had chopped off with zero provocation. If you looked up "murder hobo" in the dictionary you'd probably see a picture of these guys. But nah, the girl of the group kills one (completely sedated) NPC with her one evil character ever and it's just treated like "that's who she really wants to play." Spoiler alert, I'm team true neutral all the way most of the time, CN if the character (race/class) required it (not really an issue these days), and NG the rest. GM and I basically just assume they got butt hurt that I, a girl who got into TTRPGs after they did, "pulled one over on them." Never mind that I wasn't trying and desperately had not wanted to do anything of the sort. I'd been hoping they'd figure it out and try to/successfully murder me.

I try to avoid metagaming by asking my DM if my character would know anything about the entity in front of me. He'll usually ask me to roll a history check. If I succeed, I'm not metagaming. If I fail, I'll try to do something less than ideal on purpose just to make sure I'm not metagaming. Or maybe my character's spidey sense is tingling and just wants to nope out of there. Sometimes the consequences of doing the wrong thing are just as fun as if I had done the right thing as long as the party isn't put in danger or overly inconvenienced. It also doesn't hurt to ask the DM if the action I'm about to take can just affect me rather than the party. There are also some cases where the DM ruled that based on the world we were in or my character's backstory, I would have some knowledge of the entity and tell me what I know about them.

It was very strange. But I shrugged, and kept the fighter healed instead. Outside of a few unkind words, the Paladin put up with me, even when I used control undead instead, as I couldn't turn undead (he did want the undead disposed of after the first wave of enemies were dealt with). Heh. He died in a fight several sessions later, and I honored his wish by not trying to cast raise dead on him, or even trying to heal him prior when I saw him about to die (I didn't even perform funeral rites, as I had done with multiple NPCs at that point). The fighter lived tho! That was a fun character.

  • @CameronsVideo

Yes the problem with running the spell as intended is that it takes far too long to resolve for the DM in a fair and balanced way. If the caster cannot choose the animals, that implies, it is actually random what they get (or based on where they are) and this require the DM to have tables ready for such a thing as determining what they get randomly. Or tables based on all terrain and world locations (chult should have dinosaurs after all). If you just pick, you end up in a position where you either aid the player or hinder them based on your decisions which will make the player feel like they don't have agency with their own spell and possibly even feel like they are being screwed over when they summon rats and cows instead of wolves. Then they just never use the spell ever and it might as well not even exist.

While holding the rod, you can use an action to direct each tentacle to attack a creature you can see within 15 feet of you. Each tentacle makes a melee attack roll with a +9 bonus. On a hit, the tentacle deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage. If you hit a target with all three tentacles, it must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the creature's speed is halved, it has disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws, and it can't use reactions for 1 minute. Moreover, on each of its turns, it can take either an action or a bonus action, but not both. At the end of each of its turns, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. Dungeon Master´s Guide (BR) → DnD 5e Magic Items

My players were on a boat to get to Waterdeep, and the monk reasoned they could save a lot of fresh water if he didn't need to wash his underwear every day, so he forgo wearing it altogether. They were in the middle of the ocean so i allowed it and even let him preserve more resources. Then they come to Waterdeep and the monk decides he doesn't want to lose his new bonus, and decides to continue monking about in the nude. I, being a great DM and in no way at fault, knew the dragonheist campaign had a legal codex for waterdeep laws. But guess which law Mercer forgot to include in the codex, that's right, indecent exposure. 3 different laws exist to outlaw mind control, but nothing on dress codes. So now my monk is walking through the wealthiest city in D&D in the nude... And then there's the enlarge spell tattoo, RNGesus is to blame for that one.

I'll never understand why some groups have such a problem with characters respecing. I don't need the game's permission to let a character swap spells, all I need to hear is my player telling me their build isn't working out. Sometimes character concepts don't pan out the way you want when you start playing and tweaks are needed. I want my players to have fun and chaining them to a build that isn't working is stupid. Obviously if I notice people are asking for respec every time they encounter difficulty a talk may be needed but that wasn't what was happening with the fire arrow swap. Hell, I might have fixed the problem with one word, now it's Holy Fire Arrow and demonic resistances are useless. "The Dark Fire shall not avail you!"

4e Warden wasn't bad, conceptually. Also 4e had a cool feat that made fire immunity count as resistance. Only thing 5e has that is similar is Pyro Sorc 18.

4:33 the change was made SPECIFICALLY for these kinds of shenanigans. It didn't used to work this way but the meme of the 8 raptors or iirc the 8 pixies that could all cast spells of their own blew up too much to not get addressed. So while, yes, the DM chooses technically most DMs will allow most players to get what they want flavor-wise. It's just the issue of being able to cheese every encounter with not just the right tool for the job but 8 of the right tool for the job.

Shouldn´t the tiefling being on church grounds without any issues already be enough to absolve them from any suspicion?`But no, apparently the vestments and her taking care of orphans was not enough to convince that guy.

I feel like or the first story the obvious thing is just talk to the player. Let them know that summoning in a bunch of minions is cool but slows the game for everyone and can really unbalance an encounter, making it harder for the DM and difficult for other players to get the spot light. I'd suggest to that player that if they want to be. A summoner type character, use the spell to summon big creatures instead of a horde. Sure it's not as effect as a swarm but it's still very cool, does just fine, and won't mess up the game for anyone.

While the DM definitely seemed annoyed by the swarm summoning, the bigger issue was the player whining about an encounter that couldn't be swarmed to death.

@@ArcCaravan true but I feel like with most people that could be resolved with just 'Its only fun for you and makes it annoying/difficult for everyone else' Annnnnnd frankly if someone doesn't care that everyone else dislikes them doing that, I wouldn't want to play with them. You are right tho, the bigger issue is the player being super fussy.

As a DM I don't worry about metagaming... because I homebrew/edit all monsters. I like a personal touch to my encounters, so I rarely, if ever, run a straight book-made enemy. Surprises are fun!

Speaking of Apex I really like how this series' main theme has different renditions like how apex does with a lot of their themes I wonder whom the two characters were in question though. Loba wouldn't have let revenant die because he wants to die. revenant wouldn't let loba die because he needs her to destroy his source code so he can die. I would have argued about the lore with that damn random

Not racism if you aren't the same species as the other, also gotta keep it in the game not out in reality. Honestly I'd refuse healing at first but if Tiefling constantly prooved they aren't evil I'd make my paladin change her mind and she might even start giving other species a chance to be good. I'd see it as a chance to grow and I think that'd make a deeper bond ic between the party members At least I think it'd do that

About the something cheeky (minor spoilers for STK) My first thoughts are that gathering ALL of Gruhd Haug's residents for a match is absurdly unfair, as there's no way that a party of level 8 ish characters can handle that many giants, orcs, hobgoblins, etc. That being said, if the party sauntered in thinking that they could cheese it by challenging the chief, that's also very much on them. This really depends on whether the DM changed Guh as she appears in the adventure or not. If they didn't then it would have been a cakewalk for a spellcaster, because Guh is stuck in her chair and can't move on her own. If that was the case, then punishing the bard for calling for help was definitely deserved, and honestly quite clever. However, if Guh was moving around like a normal hill giant, then it would have been considerably harder for a normal bard to handle that. Probably impossible. At the end of the day though, there are better options for handling players who spam conjure animals. Talk to your players about it first, and see if a compromise can be established so they arn't relying on it. One clever idea my DM has (we're also currently playing STK and just finished Gruhd Haug🤙) is to increase the CR of the animals conjured by 1 category. This incentivizes summoning stronger and fewer enemies. Even though this option exists, however, I must point out I don't actually use Conjure Animals even though I could (ima ranger), and I don't for the same reason I didn't take Spike Growth. To me, they are the equivalent of spell junk food, they are strong at the expense of bogging down combat. As a DM, I've seen them in play enough times to not feel the need to use them.

People getting super sensitive over what is allowed meta gaming and what not can sometimes go into insane levels. I absolutely love playing as a Thiefling and in one of the campaigns where I played, the dungeon master got beyond upset about the fact that my character knew not to try to use fire against Thieflings bandits during an encounter. "Man I think she knows that her own kin has that feature after 58 years trying to survive a Thiefling war, where she has fought nothing but other Thieflings."
