Crazy 5th story- or I guess, not crazy. Why I avoid that kinda stuff- crazy, crazy common. Tbh the arizona ice tea guy seems friendly and my kinda person to chat with. OH! And my first ever participation in a dnd session finished. Not sure if you'd remember my previous comments, can't quite call it a horror story, or a positive story. The true horror was how my DM let me multiclass because they knew how passionate I was about my Bard/warlock. WOW was that complicated trying to figure out. Was I favorited? I mean in the sense I was allowed to multiclass, sure. Absolutely. Was I given help? No, still confused despite researching and reading so much, and couldn't really do much compared to the Barbarian (When raged resists all damage types and is immune to piercing) which everyone expected because that's just what a Barbarian is- and of course the Cleric cantrip that removes exhaustion levels was very helpful for my Bardlock. After all, the Warlock part gets a level of exhaustion whenever they do something to powerful. Anyways, the roleplay was crazy fun and the story was FANTASTIC so far!

Third story, while obviously NTA I think the party are a bunch of jerks and OP was way too kind and thought too highly of them. • @ArcCaravan

I'm guessing the need of OP's boat only happened as an excuse to introduce a new player, though definitely scummy of DM to allow the bullying and letting the party off easy for what should be getting themselves stranded by betraying their ride.

Wild guess but seems like based on the water being corrupted by an artifact people were probably avoiding those waters, it does kinda make sense after they fix the problem people would start sailing out that way again in time, so perhaps a little quick but not unreasonable. That being said though I hope none of those party members were good or lawful because they didn't follow those.

When we were running CoS, we kept lugging the spice cart around that was given to us to deliver to... idk somewhere before we were whisked away to Barovia. Towards the middle of the campaign we ran out of money so, logically, we established the East Barovian trading company. I don't remember how it exactly ended, but I'm pretty sure our DM got sick of it eventually and sent tax collectors after us, who discovered we were trading without the correct paperwork and licenses. Thus ending our company. Creative players require creative consequences lol

If a GM won't put the breaks on bad behavior, all the good players will leave. It's hard to deal with suddenly not being part of a group, but in charge of it, but that's what happens when your GM. What you allow, you enable.

With the money story, flying away as a bat was probably the best thing to be done. Of course, telling the DM you are not having fun and leaving would also work, but not everyone has the courage or foresight to do so. I'm sure others would suggest slitting the throats of the player characters in their sleep, but knowing other stories, the DM would've probably recon it and maybe even say "the other players are awake and kill you instead". Leaving is probably best for everyone in general.

The Barovia Merchant is clearly playing a different game than the party. If the rest aren't on board with the extensive looting, and they won't tone it down, then the Merchant must find a table that likes his play style. Nobody is the wrong here, they all just want different things out of the game.

The story about the Dampir reminded me of a quote I read awhile back: "you say 'it's what your character would do' yet you are the one who made the character." If a player (yet alone playerS (plural!)) are being openly hostile then that's not someone you want to play with. We all know that D&D is a cooperative game and also know of the social contract to make the game fun for everyone. Someone who actively tries to sabotage the cooperative nature of the game is playing a kind of D&D few will enjoy, and it's not worth trying to salvage a palatable game out of a mountain of garbage.

I've been sitting on my horror story for years. It's not a big one, but the first time I played D&D almost became my last. Since I had no idea what I was doing I got help with character creation. Problem was that no one explained anything to me. Not the rules, not the weird combination of numbers and letters, nothing. Mid session I'm looking through my character sheet trying to figure it out and eventually had to quietly ask the player next to me what a combination of letters in my equipment meant. He looked at it and said: "Oh, you have a crossbow. Why didn't you tell us?" The other players overhead and got angry at me for not mentioning that I have a long range weapon since they could have planned encounters differently if they knew. After getting yelled at I decided not to return for the next session and it took literal years before I allowed a friend to drag me into a new game. Luckily these people were willing to teach me the game as we played or I might never have given roleplay a second chance.

Scheduling story: I checked how long we've been stuck in the first dungeon of Descent into Avernus, and.... it's been over a year since we first found the hidden entrance under the bathhouse. Mostly due to inconsistent schedules and a wide round of health issues happening to various people in the group; it doesn't help that there are only two players and the GM, so if one person can't make it, we can't continue. Sometimes real life is the horror story

The way i would deal with the monster parts in the second story is I would assign a gold value to each monster they fight, and keep track of the types of damage they deal to those monsters (fire would damage feathers, bludgeoning or slashing might damage eyes or meat, etc), then I'd get him to roll to see how much he could salvage and tell him he gets X gold worth of parts at the end. He would just have to make his way to a proper trader to be able to sell the parts. And honestly, id give him the bag of holding so I wouldnt have to argue about decay. Lol

My brother's rolling rules for most recent campaign. (My brother favors high-powered games with lots of bonus powers and powerful homebrew... but they're usually very brutal as well... *glances at recent session where our fighter dealing 95 damage in a single blow gave us a sliver of hope.*) everybody roll 5d6 keep 3. Seven times, keep the highest 6 rolls. List all the arrays. Everybody can use whichever of these produced arrays they want. (but he suggests taking the ones that are highest totals.)

I feel like a reasonable compromise for loot guy is that after a battle, he has 30 seconds to write or type down monster parts, and send to DM with no ability to edit or add to the list, then after session, dm rolls for chance of success, and again for # for items gained. 1-10 fail, 11-19 success, 20crit is double drop. D8 for claws, D12 for feathers, stuff like that. if the dude gets one feather, thats the luck of the draw. no arguing, no interrupting, less time taken up by this guy's need to hoard resources

Mini horror story about looting. I played in an 8 hour one-shot where one of the players wanted to loot the goblins... specifically the arrows. For 2 hours he and the DM went back and forth about what he could get for the heads and fletching. We were level 5, I think, and he had just given away a 200gp sword, or purchased one. Either way. There's no reason to salvage parts of goblin arrows. Also, this was streamed on Twitch

So I had a situation a couple weeks ago and it goes as follows. I'm part of this group for dnd fans over 30. Typically it is just meme posting and asking options on stuff for games. The group is chill. Someone posted about this game they were hosting. An epic high fantasy home brew. They had a list of games they were running. 5 different games a week, 2 games a day. And they were looking for people to fill the slots. I just liked the post and moved on. They dm'd me directly saying they saw I liked the post and would I want to join. Honestly I thought being agoraphobic that this could be a good way for me to attempt to socialize outside of my usual group of friends. He wanted a voice interview to go over rules, the game, and see if I was a good fit. I thought "sure that sounds like a good idea. Compatibility is a great thing to check on." This interview was ok. I thought he seemed a bit arrogant and full of himself, going on about being a voice actor and how amazing his games were. He also interupted the call constantly to deal with his dog and his girlfriend's daughter, who he bragged constantly about being such an amazing father to. Annoying but no big deal. It just made this call 45 minutes long and drawn out. He then says I seem like a good fit and asked what day I'd like to join. Then he says "so let's talk about cost" Instantly I pulled the listing back up and no, there was 0 mention of cost. And he says he wants minimum 20 USD per session. I'm canadian so that's like 35 dollars each week. For a 3 hour game with 7 other people. During the interview he also asked what I did for work, which I assumed was for schedualing. I told him I dont work due to illness. So the actual audacity to expect money from me. I told him bluntly I couldn't afford a paid game and wouldn't have wasted my time if I knew it were paid. He got upset and said I'd never find a better game out there for free...after he just told me about using KZread for music, and battle maps taken and lightly edited from Google images. I blocked him but decided to look up Mr voice actor. He is banned on multiple sites, and some posts claim he is abusive, manipulative, and a predator towards minors. I somehow dodged so many bullets, but I don't think I will try playing with randoms again. Still I hope his girlfriends kid is okay with a creep like that. ((Edit for spelling))

I wouldn't be able to stand if a player tried to turn dnd into a business management sim. Ok if the rest of the group is in on it and you have a session of setting up a joint venture, like a tavern or guild hall the party can use as a base, or if you try to earn some coin during downtime. But if you take time out of EVERY SESSION to describe your character being trying to hawk a bushel of apples for two coppers a'piece, I would be bored out of my gourd after a couple of sessions. If the player wanted to do some trading I would delegate it to a couple of sentences and a dice roll, like "you enter the town, try to sell your wares - roll a charisma check. 17? You spend an hour selling all your wares for (rolls on a table) 45 silver pieces."

I have a guy like Mr. MonsterApples in my campaign. He’s new and always trying to gain economic advantage or trying to play the game like Skyrim, where you can just build up whatever skill you feel like (alchemy, smithing, other crafting, training animals, goat herding, etc) and loot everything for resale/ingredients. Plus he tries to buy the most random, niche things like glass lens smelting equipment just so he doesn’t need to buy a spyglass. I had to tell him to slow his roll a bit. First of all, games like Skyrim are single-player video games where quests can simply be put on hold while you become a skilled blacksmith in one day. In D&D, this is hogging spotlight from other players and distracting from the other goals. Secondly, related to the first, it’s causing me to spend extra time and energy fretting over minutia like the cost of hundreds of things not on the PHB gear table. Thirdly, I told him that some thought needs to be put into realistic roleplay. Why would his character suddenly be interested in picking up all these skills and past times? He has amnesia about how he got here but vague recollection of being vampire chattel, and there are clues of vampire activity every so often, you’d think he has bigger priorities!

I'm playing in a WFRP campaign that I came into late, the DM is near-catatonically chill with story premise so I had no basis for my character beyond "healing could be useful, maybe combat woukd be good?" and "we're vaguely heading towards this marsh". So I made a Wood Elf Herbalist looking for a rare plant to take home and he was added to the game. To a group of a Priest, a Merchant, a Duellist, and a Scholar, all human. None of them have similar goals or character traits, theres no reason for them to get along and they mostly don't. Particularly my character and the Merchant, neither of whom is a good person. But the party hangs together because we want to play together. Our characters bicker and squabble and occasionally try to steal from each other (the Merchant keeps trying to steal the Duelist's horse) but when it's important we fight beside each other because we want to play and want these characters to survive. It's not egregiously different between roleplay and combat, no-one's dramatically rescuing a person they dislike, but we're shooting in the same direction and not undermining each other. All that to say: there's a good way to do antagonistic roleplay within a party and *that* ain't it.

Intro: I was expecting either a "love potions are really fantasy roofies" story or an in-game love triangle scenario rather than scheduling interfering with a good campaign. Nice twist and unfortunate lack of continuing the game. 1st story: Merchant story sounds fun, but only if everyone agrees instead of one guy dragging everyone down. Could work as the personal side quest for that character with some streamlining, though unlikely considering the setting. 2nd story: Transformation gameplay really speaks to me. Shame the party are a bunch of agreement breaking thieves. Reminds me of that evil character whose party tried forcing him to share all his resources just for having an alignment. 3rd story: A mix of the classic "main character syndrome" story coupled with figuring out the plot ahead of time. At least the problem player accepted their kick with grace. 4th story: A moral I see is, "Don't rely on others to solve problems you don't speak up about." OP repeatedly mentioning hoping the DM would deal with Jerk felt like unwittingly passing the buck to someone without their knowledge, though leaving was a fair response after kicking did not happen. Crispy's 5th story: Never have I been happier to not deal with MMORPGs that require continuously working with larger groups. Overall a nice batch of stories, particularly first and second for the merchantry/business scenarios.

I'm Singaporean and oh my gods, poor Unlucky. Jerk is extremely xenophobic. Caning is pretty much a severe physical punishment that this country uses and some parents still do it to their kids, though steps are made to reduce parents caning children. Reducing Singapore to caning and gum is so disgusting, and I know for a fact he's probably mocking Unlucky's accent as well. It's unfortunately a common occurrence.

For the "Player Railroads" story, I think people are skipping over a bunch of red flags on the DM's part as well. Druid definitely deserved the kick, if for nothing other than oversharing in DMs (don't be a creep, people), but the DM: made an open-world campaign for their first time GMing; played entirely without official statblocks as their first ever campaign; admits to a rocky start due to lack of confidence and balancing issues (unsurprisingly); expects people to use magic items merely because the DM crafted it for them, not because the item appeals to their character; considers it a negative when players put 2 clues together and figure out twists the DM intentionally foreshadowed (they only said it was "okay" since the clues were admittedly obvious); says the world is open yet tries to steer players away from the route they want to take, because it is too direct for their taste; blames a pre-existing player for staying quiet and not joining in the chaos when new players get added, especially players who were described as chaotic and comic relief-y; dangles plot hooks in front of the party yet expects them to not pursue them and labels them problematic if they do (first with the BBEG, then with the mysterious NPC); doesn't discuss that a campaign requires a criminal character; blames people for not feeling like joining a campaign after discovering they'd be playing a criminal character alongside other criminal PCs; doesn't seem to understand that people may not enjoy campaigns with morally-ambiguous parties, and thinks that the issue is that the character would need to be changed to fit (rather than player preference in campaign style); and more. I feel like all of this is more than enough to call out OP as an unreliable narrator, and make it clear we're not getting an unbiased version of events, let alone the full events. As an example off the top of my head: we are never told what Cleric's arc was, just that Druid butted into it and annoyed everyone. There are clear signs of Druid just merely not fitting the campaign, twice, and being blamed for leaving one of them (the criminal one). For all we know, Druid is a goal-oriented player who saw the juiciest hook (BBEG) and wanted to pursue it, only to grow increasingly frustrated as OP discouraged her from following the hook without clearly communicating "this is an open-world campaign, the BBEG is not tailored to your level, you'll have better chances at defeating them if you gather allies and level-up to around Tier 4," and then grow even more frustrated as less-serious players were added into the campaign. She decided to withdraw from social scenes because the other players simply didn't mesh well with her own tastes and playstyle (chaotic, comic relief-y), gets blamed for it as well, gets yet another plot hook carelessly dangled in front of her and punished for pursuing it, gets invited to a 2nd campaign without being told it's criminal-themed, gets blamed for leaving it, gets shit-talked behind her back, gets kicked, then still apologized and leaves without a fuss. Druid's main problematic behaviors were butting into Cleric's arc to the point everybody at the table was mad (and OP, the unreliable narrator, casually dropped that into the post without any real context), prying info out of the NPC (which can be easily explained as Druid being frustrated with OP's GMing, and the fact OP is inexperienced and doesn't realize that if you say your campaign is "open world" and then dangle plot-hooks in front of players, at least some of them will want to pursue said plot-hooks), and the whole uncomfy PMs situation, which we are given no context on (understandably at least, unlike the Cleric stuff), which feels like an afterthought and, given OP's unreliable narrator status, may be fabricated or not concern red-card topics (small chance, which is why I'm defaulting to assuming it was bad enough that all other justifications were unneeded). At the end of the day, it is clear Druid and the rest of the party wanted different playstyles. Her main in-game issue was not saying "thank you for inviting me to play, but I don't think I mesh well with the campaign, so I'll take my leave" when she realized that, well, she did not mesh well with the party. But, given she did exactly that in the criminal campaign, it may be a case of things developing slowly enough in the main campaign that she did not notice she didn't mesh well, until she was kicked. As it stands, I'd give Druid maybe a 1-2 out of 5 on the AH scale when it comes to in-game behavior, since the main problematic behaviors seem to only have started showing after a lot of frustration was built up. This score may be bumped to like a 3 if we got clarification on what exactly the Cleric's arc was that she butted in. For out of game behavior, she deserved the kick for the uncomfy PMs alone, even if she was a model 10/10 "fits perfectly with the party and brings snacks" kind of player. Also, OP really needs to self-reflect on their own shortcomings, because there's a laundry list of red flags in their post that aren't phrased as red flags, so OP probably does not realize any of the behaviors they shared on their part are problematic, which may indicate OP has even more red flags that merely didn't seem relevant enough to mention in their post. I doubt anyone read this massive ramble, but if you did, have a cookie! 🍪

"Yeah" "I don't think this is gunna be a good fit." Obviously this is my fault because in the early days of 5e I didn't think anyone would ever walk into a mixed group of people they have respectful conversations with in general and then say they want to go around *ing people. Can someone give me advice (without spoilers) for Curse of Strahd? I'm meeting up with other beginner level players who are level 3, we have a Bard, a Paladin and a Cleric. I was going to go in as a halfling rouge, and I had planned on taking the thief subclass, because it fit with the backstory of the character (I'm not sure if I would start at level 1, or if they would get me to start at level 3 to match the rest of the party). However, I have another character who I've already played as in one-shot modules who is a level 3 Goblin Barbarian (Totem Warrior: Eagle). Would this be a better character to bring to the campaign? Not sure if a charismatic rogue would be all that useful against hordes of the undead.

  • @kaylawoodbury2308

A high charisma character is not bad to have in CoS. The model isn't even really "hordes of the undead" unless the DM is more brutal. There is still elements of political intrigue, potential allies and betrayers, etc. However you did say theres a bard and paladin so the party is already rich in charisma. If you are more worried about combat a Blood Hunter Order of the Ghost Slayer would be great in CoS both combat wise and thematically if the dm gives it the ok.

Not the druid's fault she figured out the "mystery." Perhaps it wasn't as well-hidden as OP thought. Not saying druid shouldn't have been kicked for other reasons mentioned, but you should never kick someone because they figure out where your story is going. Trading DM - I kind of like that idea. Maybe ask player keep it to in town moments when the rest of the party is off shopping, etc., so everyone is on the same page. Pirate Vamparrrrr - Dude, I so wished your story would have said, "So the party left me on watch while they slept, so I slit all their throats," because they clearly meant to kill your character. I can tell you one thing about Jerk: I'm 100% certain he's never had any (insert insulting synonym for women here because I refuse to type it) much less an actual GF.

@@ArcCaravan well I am basing this on the story that had the love potions where the players directly involved had a full discussion about it. In that case consent was all across the table and someone was left out. Of course if no discussion was had and it suddenly appears in the campaign then in some people's case that was a breach of trust and that is enough to leave. I tried to give the broadest spanning advice since not every player is the same and not every situation is the same. Sometimes letting people have a chance to discuss something is the last thing you can give them.

Personally how I would treat a love potion is that it makes a person more perceptive of another. It isn't necessarily a love potion as much as a maximized passive perception potion. Where the passive perception makes you hyper aware of whoever made the potion/the potion was made for. From there the decision would be on the person if they literally like what they see. Literally. I like it like this because often in media portrayals of love potions, hate comes up as an antidote or corruptive agent or something else. This essentially be a potion where you have to make yourself... appealing on a base level and where fake attempts of being attractive are immediately made obvious. Try to romance someone by being charitable suddenly? They see every single time you flinch when pulling out your coin pouch and shiver whenever you feel how light it becomes. Want to act like you are suave and perfect? They feel you suck in air as you stub your toe trying to pull out their seat. They notice you adjusting your nice clothes every minute or two because you haven't worn these in forever. Now they get to judge you with full context. Honestly with this interpretation you can go as far as to have this be part of the wedding procedure. Both partners get full context for what the other is doing and decide on if all those small actions are something they want to have in a partner for the rest of their lives.
