I know all that other stuff DM was doing was bad...but I feel particularly bad for his girl/friend/whatever. Based on what OP was describing (combined with DM's behavior with everyone else), with her sitting to the side being quiet all the time, hugging her knees, and then later snapping at OP in DM's defense, it sounds to me like she's in an abusive relationship with DM.

Psionics are a dnd thing, has none of the stigma of psykers in 40k do. And are far far less awesome. - see, magic in dnd is granulated, schools, types, sources, divine, arcane, ki, psionics, DM is just pouring magic ketchup on everything and insisting everyone have some. - in 40k, all magic is psyker witchcraft, as all psykers twist physical and immaterial reality around them, wether it be summoning demons, raising the dead as mindless corpses, or shooting lightning and fire from their eyes. The inquisition makes absolutely no distinction beyond sanctioned or unsanctioned psyker. This psionic city is about as narratively interesting to me as a town that does nothing but cobble shoes. Novel but you get used to it fast... Also dnd did it first. Look up githzerai cities sometimes. Far more badass than this drek.

The most "write a book instead" GM I think I've ever seen. If you have characters and a plot in mind, that's not a game. That's a story. So write it and leave other people out of it. But fuck this guy just for how rude he is. You don't go to someone's house, kick your shoes across their house, then undermine them at every turn by talking about how bad everything they have and do is. On that note, the one thing he and I agree on is that OP's basement sounds dope as hell.

Seriously. Like id try to talk to her alone and maybe give her my number (im a girl, btw,) Though I'd be super worried simply because of how controlling he is. While he probably wouldn't accuse her of trying to cheat because I'm a girl, I've been in those shoes before and that doesn't mean he won't find another reason to get upset. When I was with my one, now ex, bf I had met a girl that lived up the st. I was 20 at the time. I thought she was closer in age to me but she was like 15. Whatever not that bad. We talked for like, maybe 8min? If that. We decdied for me to come hang out the next day. He found out and flipped on me and accused me of trying to start a prostitution ring with this chick. Because apparently that's the sort of conversation you have with someone that you meet for the 1st time and can be a conversation that starts and ends in less than 8min. It's amazing how controlling ahats (guys or gals) will twist things to make you look bad. He also made up a bunch of lies to tell her so she wouldn't want to be my friend. The next day when I saw her, her and her friends started making fun of me. He had lived in the area for over 10 yrs, so she had known him since she was like 4 or 5, so of course she believed what he said over anything I said.

While this isn't strictly a "D&D" story, it is worth noting how often real life issues and in-game issues tend to intermingle, and I'm not just talking about people who bring their out-of-game grudges into the game (or vice versa). Someone who's controlling in game is probably also pretty controlling in the real world. Someone who doesn't respect women in game probably has some issues with misogyny out of game. There's plenty of exceptions, of course, because some people like to roleplay scumbags, but if someone says they're running/playing a super good person and they're five seconds from going full murder-hobo at any second, you may want to give them a wide berth.

it's been said already, but in the opening story, OP didn't need to homebrew a magic item for what he wanted, he could have asked for the cloak of elvenkind, it's basically active camouflage and the DM would have been full of crap to deny it seeing as it's an uncommon wonderous item. Aside from that, DMs that go out of their way to make a player character useless at the one thing they're made to do, or make that one thing pointless for the campaign are just dicks. If the DM didn't want stealth and sneaking to be a big part of his campaign they could have told OP from the jump so they didn't waste their time. and I feel like DMs that "nerf" classes do so for the sake of making their own encounter-building easier. There's always a way to make a plot hook or encounter work for a party if you feel like someone in the group will just try to circumvent it. all of a sudden giving every npc and enemy eagle eyes and claiming camo is fae magic is amateur hour DM crap

I was in a game there the setting was stated from the beginning to take place in a magic school where we would learn magic. As a result the DM, FROM THE BEGINNING made it really super clear that no matter what, we had to have some magical ability or we would struggle to be able to participate in the game. Also, he was open to us starting at level three so that really opens up options for being able to cast. If this guy was going to make it the plot be "you all work for these psionic army", he should have told them! Magic school was really fun. Three out of four of us dumped Int. We became the dumb ass jocks of the school. It was glorious.

As for this sad excuse of a DM/human he should have been dropped after the 1st time at OP's house. The only whay you can become like a ranger with a soul knife is to go into the prestige class Soul Bow. But even then you can't even start taking levels in it until level 6 at the earliest. And even then its still lacking alot of ranger skills & abilities.

Funny stealth story: My rogue phantom used ghost walk to get into a castle, then sneaked around until she found the kidnapped queen, picked all locks on her chains and on the window, told the party via a sending stone to wait with our teleport scroll close to the window and then my character hugged the queen and they descended from the window (instead of a prison cell in the basement the queen had been kept near the local ruler's room because of her high standing) Also after picking the first lock I thought I had been discovered, so I dived through the floor into the library below where I hid on a bookshelf Well, apparently no one was actually coming to check on the queen and my evasive maneuver was completely pointless, in addition the local ruler was standing in front of the bookshelf, but luckily she did not notice me

Intro story: Right, no humans EVER wear camouflage. Only fairies know how to hide. (This is sarcastic, in case anyone couldn’t tell.) Main story: Why. The fuck. Did OP and their friends stay in this fucking group? This DM is waving so many red flags you’d think he was a fucking bullfighter! Kick him! Let someone else-anyone else-DM! Grow a fucking backbone!

nerfing rogues seems stupid what little of games i've played still. I'm having a blast with my charismatic swashbuckler-rogue so far. he's not the best at stealing or stealthing by any means, but where he falls short in those, he is good at easing off tensions or pausing fights to woo his way out of situations. (has proven a laughable situation or two for my group too)

If the guy wasn't kidding about being ex-con, he at least acted better behaved than others that appear in such stories. Though that's only in terms of his attitude with the group. Can only imagine what he may be doing to the girlfriend. Either way, at least nobody got hurt or arrested. But man, who gets that riled up over a drive?

Why Dark Eldar? I mean, I guess they look cool, although I prefer the Craftworlder aesthetic, but the Dark Elves from DnD just look cooler in my opinion. They actually look like, well, dark elves and not just a group of normal elves that went evil. Although I'm not entirely sure if life underground would result in dark skin since that level of pigmentation is typically a result of...wait, its Magic, don't apply science to it. Wait, if the players don't have any impact, WHATS THE POINT IN PLAYING DND?! At that point you might as well go write a book.

Dm outpacin you over sealth/pick pocketing/combatI like to shame my dms by quickly calculating the lowest and highest cr a creature was by amount of hp and skill checks/attack rolls. Example: the monster goes down after 50 hp of damage. So it could be cr 3 (with max hp rolls and +5 and toughness) or 10 (5 hp per hd.) then you just work out BaB by attack. So can be like ‘wow that was a hard fight/high skill. He must be a level’

Not sure what to think about OP in the last story. If I had a criminal record and someone's first reaction was to immediately state "no drugs or violence" like I was some idiot with no conscience, I'd be pretty put off. The DM had his issues, but I think there's another side to this.

I don't know, I think the main story's fake. There's just so much flexing going on, everything's too perfect and the story reads like fanfiction; OP has a super neat set-up and he's clearly well-off, the guy in question reads like a stereotypical neck beard and the whole thing ends really anticlimactically as the guy and his twenty-something ride off into the sunset, never to be seen again. Another thing, apart from hosting the group, there was almost no interaction by OP in anything regarding anything. I can't think of anyone, particularly an ex-cop, who would let some random bozo walk into their house and be so incredibly disrespectful. And then to find out the guy is an ex-felon and do absolutely nothing? Yeah, no, I'm calling BS. OP's lying through their teeth.
