Funniest part about the intro post is how the OP talks about how his game is for real "Real gamers" and how they play in a "high fantasy medieval game" then they go and use a weapon like a katana which was not in prominent use in japan until after the medieval period. In fact firearms made it to japan around the same time as the classical katana. But I don't think OP knows their history so they will probably continue to be annoying like this.

Moreover, DnD as a system is most easily used for high fantasy medieval settings, yes, but 5e's DMG also suggests ways to adapt the game for less conventional worlds, with ideas on how to implement firearms and such into a campaign. So that commenter is just... wrong on several fronts. And, if they don't want firearms in their games, why don't they ban them before going into pettiness?

The “forced pregnancy” via unnatural means is one of the most hated tropes in many forms of media, even before you take into account a player’s lack of consent. It’s usually a horror trope! You sure as heck better kill what comes out! What were the other players’ and the DM expecting? Hugs and tears of joy? One of the biggest controversies in comic book history was the pregnancy of Carol Danvers’ Ms. Marvel back in the early days. She had a rapid pregnancy and birth of her own mind controlling assailant, who then took her as his lover, back to his own dimension. It was basically a rape and kidnapping, but in the comic, all her superhero friends treated it as romantic. They threw her a baby shower while she was freaking out about the surprise pregnancy, then sent her off with this mysterious being with smiles.

I feel like if it's in the right setting and it somewhat makes sense, a forced pregnancy while yes it is totally fucked up, it might be able to work if the players at least know that things like that can happen or if it's in like a really messed up horror game. Like lets say for example some person makes a stupid promise or deal with a fey that has something to do with the person's next child and the person decided to use birth control and if they're a guy maybe get a vasectomy. I could see a fey saying "ehhh fuck that" and making it happen anyways as a way for the deal to be fulfilled. feel free to vote with replies and likes/dislikes if you agree or disagree with my statement.

Strangely enough, my DM tried doing this with me. My Paladin *(female)* got a female goddess pregnant in exchange for some big lore dump shit, and then later that son of her and the goddess came into the story as an aged up evil NPC through time bullshit that eventually had some sort of “alliance” with us. Nothing really came of it, and he spoiled it THE MOMENT HE WAS INTRODUCED so by the time my character figured it out months later there wasn’t really anything to be had from it other than play my character upset and disappointed and move on. An annoying part was that one of the player characters tried to convince my Paladin to *”Go talk to him, he’s your son”* and in character not even 6 months had passed between getting the goddess pregnant and this, so they were very Surprised Pikachu Face when my Paladin said no and that she wants nothing to do with the guy.

That reminds me of Fallout 4, weirdly enough. The devs give you an ugly potato baby, that you interact with for 10 seconds at the beginning of the game. And that’s supposed to be your character’s emotional driving force for the next 50+ hours. Shockingly, most players did not care about the baby, and rolled their eyes at the dramatic reunion scenes later on. Their definition of medieval is horrible. One, firearms were first invented as hand cannons in ancient China, though they didn't exactly have a good accuracy score. Two, the European firearms we base modern ones on were first invented in the mid-14th century, which qualifies as Middle Ages. Three, katanas weren't even in Europe, which is clearly where the scum thinks "medieval" is relegated to, since they are ignoring hand cannons. Four, there are far better swords to use than a katana anyway. At that rate, I wouldn't be surprised if Say'dyzt had combat plate horribly underpriced, ridiculously sluggish, and be pierced by the worst sword to have ever been commonly used as a side-arm, and if the side arms that are swords were treated as a main weapon.

The GM for my regular group makes completely homebrew systems to play with pretty often, and he’s damn good at it. One time when the party was traveling on horseback, we noticed that the GM was making a lot of rolls and doing a lot of math to determine how fast the horses were going. So we started kinda riffing and making lightheaded jokes about the mechanics and how complicated they looked. You know what he said in response? “Yeah you guys are right I think my horse rules are a little too complicated, I’ll work on simplifying them for next session.” Imo that’s the attitude you need to take with any homebrew rpg content.

As a gaming system creator (still a work in progress) myself, the first thing I've learned is: LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYTESTERS! The second, of course, is "test things, test things again, test them a third time, and when you're sure everything works just fine... test them a fourth time.". Seriously, it took me half a year to notice how a single digit screwed up skill and combat rolls AGAINST the players, and the difficulty system made some things actually impossible (as in "only the top master crafter can make a normal, run-of-the-mill plate mail armor" impossible). To all the creators out there: remember that you're no God. A creator, whether he's assembling a campaign, a setting or a whole gaming system, is seriously out of his league 90% of the time. Sure, Gary Gygax managed to put together D&D just fine, but the end result... well, anyone who played D&D Red Box knows how seriously messed up that game was (nonhumans were shafted in just a few levels, starting clerics were pretty much just worse warriors, stuff like that). And we're no Gary Gygax, that's for sure. So, my suggestion is: BE HUMBLE. ASK FOR HELP. And when everything comes tumbling down, don't be afraid to restart - and take your time.

Not to mention their reaction to the setting also having a nation full of androids, robots, and other alien sci-fi tech from an alien spaceship that crashed there millennia ago (though nothing from there’s made it into 2e yet other than the androids as a playable race). Or the old AD&D (or older) module that inspired that nation - “Expedition to the Barrier Peaks”, a dungeon crawl through an alien starship that crashed there so long ago that it got buried just by time.

The vast majority of DMs that don't like gunslinger in their game, for whatever reason, are typically a lot more mature about it. As in they'd explain why it wouldn't work in their world. Which is entirely fair. In my experience though, most DMs I've met are fine with it. Most people are playing in a world with races like gnomes and dwarves, races known to invent and tinker, and there's machinations far more complex than the flintlocks/matchlocks gunslingers tend to use. Definitely doesn't help anyone's argument that guns don't fit when Dragon Heist, an official adventure released by WotC, taking place in their official world of the Forgotten Realms, has drow gunslinger NPCs, lmao.

The Demon Lord would contact her throughout the campaign sometimes and it all felt copacetic with the creepy vibe the whole campaign was putting off. But when our party TPK’d and were Deus Ex’d by Grazz’t, it was discovered that not only had the demon lord been making clones of my wizard, but he had impregnated her during their time “out”. Ugh. We ended up needing to provide a living sacrifice at the very end battle and I gave up my unborn demon child. lmao

Oof! It feels like every time someone/group wants to make their own game system there is always at least one person that tries to add their over powered concept. My high school friend group wanted to make a Sci-fi space battle game with everyone coming up with their own alien race ideas so to give it unique things. I was helping design & drawing the spaceships based on each of their concepts. Well one of them ended killing the whole project before getting passed the concept stage. He was also the one with the least creativity. His meshed idea was basically taking the zenomorphs template from Aliens and smashing in stuff from predator and 4 40K's tyranids. He wanted to make them as a forever adapting species that they could bypass any defences and defend against any attack. knowing this was supposed to be a balanced game with each race bringing one or two advantages and flaws to balance those. Not to be the flawless race that no one else could ever win against. And to top it he barely gave any discriptions of the race or its vessels. Only giving art clips from those sources and told me to just take elements from all of them, but not what. Say the least I didn't draw much of his "unique" race or ships.

You've definitely got to make sure you're joining the sort of game you want to play rather than joining something else and then being disappointed that it's not what you wanted. For all Shadowrun has typical Fantasy Races, it's closer to Cyberpunk 2020 than it is to D&D, and if you're wanting a level-based game where you go adventuring and fight monsters, then a skill-based game where you're basically playing an alt-universe sort of Cyberpunk game is not going to be remotely close. Sure, you _could_ find that you enjoy it, but it's not going to "scratch the D&D itch". I somehow wound up becoming a bit of a Forever GM - Cyberpunk - and recently I'd been in a funk because I hadn't actually _played_ a game in literal *_decades_* so I went looking for a game. I didn't want to join someone else's Cyberpunk game - I get my Cyberpunk "fix" Refereeing my own heavily homebrewed games - and I did not want to play D&D (which is a pity, because that would be the easiest to find a game of). No, I specifically wanted to play Traveller. Even more so, after watching Seth Skorkowsky's videos on Mongoose Traveller 2e. So I joined r/Traveller and asked if there was a game going. Within an hour I was approached by someone in Canada (so not *too* different, Time-Zone-wise) who was running a game via Discord and the following weekend I joined in their game. And it's exactly what I wanted and needed. Had a really enjoyable gaming session - 5 hours just flew past - and I'm seriously amped for the second session this weekend. If you're looking for a specific game, do everything you can to track down a good bunch of people (i.e. not the sort of people you find described in these videos) running *that game* - you'll thank yourself for the effort in the end.

The funniest thing about the first post is that a katana also doesn’t belong in classic high fantasy. You could have a single edged sword but high fantasy originates from and largely draws from Europe, the near East in Asia, and Northern Africa. North/South American, Eastern Asian and even Russian cultures don’t have much influence. If you want to throw katanas in there, have fun with it, but if you want to gatekeep guns out of your game because m’high fantasy, keep your weeb-ass katanas out of the game too.

I actually liked Shadow Run but could find no one to play it with. I did after a few years find a DnD cafe to play DnD at, and that was fun too. Different systems, but I liked both.

Huh. Getting upset about a combustion-based projectile launcher in a fantasy game where we have magical robots that can crush our heads in between their thighs without needing clockwork engineering. Oh no! We won't have that despite that we have black powder, a tall pot on a wooden cart, and a cast iron ball of impending doom! They effectively made smaller versions of cannons (early firearms) because you can suit a cannon crew with them for the amount of materials it takes to make a cannon. Folks back then are not that dumb as to not take advantage of the invention of the black powder to kill each other faster than the archers with less training needed. first story 1: Threatening someone in Roll20...Yep. It checked out. You can destroy someone through a screen, but you're gonna be replacing the screen in the time it takes for a KZread upload at least. first story 2: New or not, working against the party should have been an illegal act in Adventurers' League. If it is not, then what to stop the party from _intentionally_ stated that one of their mates was killed in the action? first story 3: Don't tell me! ... It lasted that long because nobody (including the DM) did not want to cause waves or rock the boat. Am I right? first story 4: Just like a bad phone connection...*(snapping fingers for a rhythm)* Just check your services... There are better options... than this shit... first story 5: Kudos for bravery, but we do have _dedicated_ sites and forums for kinks. Everything under the sun have an interested party involved. second story: Well. That went as well as asset flipping. Perhaps I should continue studying the differences between editions of Shadowrun to wipe doubts about my competence as a GM. third story: Hmm...I would not ask the OP why didn't she stop it right away, and more on "That's terrible! Where?!" while wearing a nerd beater shirt, a pair of jeans, a pair of purple sneakers, and a holding baptized baseball bat because that's some devilish crap going on with that evil wizard and that GM.... and I'm not Christian (partially Christian, but still!) last story: Oh! Shadowrun! Lemme get the popcorn...! Minor note for Shadowrun; "chargen" is char-gen; shortened way of saying character generation. Well. If I was the GM, I would have trusted my friend a little less from that point because I would be quite enthused to have another person interested in Shadowrun. D&D ain't bad, but people sucks when they join and disrespected us like that player did. She really just sabotaged herself in that because even if OP is doing that D&D game, OP should not allow her in because of how disrespectful she is of OP's time.

This reminds me of the first time I ever played a female character in a TTRPG, back in '84. As well as one of the last times I played a TTRPG, back in '03...

I don't think that Shadowrun player was necessarily all that in the wrong. Maybe she didn't know that wasn't her type of game until she tried it.

That said, it also sounds like she didn't really try so she's definitely in the wrong for that

"Everybody knows Dnd is a mediaeval high fantasy setting!" Well, the first guns were used in europe from the 1390s. So yeah, mediaeval.

so there are actually some systems where 1s subtract successes (some versions of oWoD do it that way) but it's usually done in a context where you're using a higher die than a d6 or where you're deliberately going for something swingy, as well as when dice pools are expected to get quite high (I think there are versions of Shadowrun wich use ones-are-subtracted). But you should design around that rather than just hrowing it in, and you should DEFINITELY know the math of how it works
