New review next Sunday. With new D&D stuff coming out all the time, I feel like the reviews are going to become more common than "every blue moon."
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Minor gripe. Avoiding the blood of the sick isn’t “meta gaming.” Medieval people weren’t completely stupid, they knew that bodily fluids of sick people were bad, and they understood concepts like quarantine and isolating the sick. Some places had houses on the outskirts of towns to send the sick, and during times of plague, they would board up the homes where sick people were to keep them away from everyone else.

Not to mention if healing magic and curses are a thing if anything this world should have a better understanding of health and sickness both physical and spirituality especially churches, so not only does it make perfect sense for the paladin to act how he did seeing him do that, the paladin should have known how to deal with the ring and if anything metagamed by not perfesonally despelling it, since it's spirituality just as toxic.

To be fair, he played the plague thing perfectly. Medieval people wouldn't touch lepers because they thought leperasy was contagious, though they would touch plague victims trying to care for them. Easy rule of thumb: visible illness, don't touch. If you're going for low int medieval characters lol

The ironic thing is that, if I remember correctly, one of the Official Lineages introduced in Van Richten's Guide also has Advantage on Death Saves. So OP's character was similar to official content in that sense

First story: "Which is unfortunate because he was a great DM" No, no he wasn't. There are way too many points of being a bad DM in there. Possibly he was good at world building. As in maybe he had some interesting ideas, but if he can't understand that a CHARACTER might not understand how magic works, seems unlikely that he is able to make the world seem cohesive and full and lively.
Honestly, OP's homebrew race in the first story sounds significantly less overpowered than the officially published Reborn race from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. If you really just want your character to never die, or at least have a ridiculously low chance of dying, a Reborn Shadow Sorcerer is way more powerful in that regard. If you really look at at all the officially published races and classes for D&D 5e, almost all of them overpowered in one thing over all the others. And if everyone is overpowered, why should anyone get upset about one character being good at the one or two things that they are supposed to be good at that the others aren't, especially if they're only using a homebrew race that is weaker than officially published content.

I actually play a reborn shadow sorcerer. It's ridiculously more fun than it has any right to be, because I based her character on being haunted by a 'curse' that left her unable to die (she basically wanted to eliminate her bloodline and she's the last branch left on the tree). That said if you're that worried about death being not-trivial in your games, yeah, it can get pretty overpowered. But also, like. Isn't it rules as written that getting attacked while doing death saves causes an auto fail, or is that just a house rule of ours? Either way it's not really that hard to work around in you're THAT salty about it. (Also I'm pretty sure rolling above a 10 counts as a successful save, not above 15, but I also could be wrong about that) Sidenote: at our table, we have another house-rule: "You can have it until it gets broken." Basically meaning, you have made a verbal contract of sorts with the DM that you can have whatever weird homebrew you requested, but the moment it starts being stupid overpowered is the moment the DM revokes it. Now I should clarify we have a lot of trust at our table, all three of us live together, the DM is my boyfriend and our other player is his brother, but it's still not a bad house-rule to have if you're somewhat lax on homebrewed stuff at the table.

I love the reborn more for lore reasons than the stat buffs. But I will admit the deathless nature features it has are pretty...hoo boy. resistance to poison, advantage on saving throws against poison and disease, advantage on death saving throws, no need to eat, drink, or breathe (I comedically play this as whenever my character bathes or gets embarrassed, he'll hold his head under water, much to the concern of others), and no need to sleep, can't be magically put to sleep, AND can finish a long rest in 4 hours? Jaysus. Still can't wait to play my reborn psion (homebrew class) though.

Intro: To be fair, most DMs aren't married so giving their friends special treatment is the next "best" thing. Jokes aside, favoritism can come in many forms, very rarely good. Spouse/Lover, long-time friend, or trying to get into someone's pants. It's all the same once you look past the who. DON'T USE THE HOMEBREW I APPROVED: The DM being a toxic person according to the friend would explain why he didn't just talk to OP about it (that and the toxic "punish out-of-game decisions through the game itself" mentality). It wouldn't be too hard for a DM and player to change a trait that the DM overlooked, assuming both parties act like mature adults. Lawful Good = EVIL?!: I heard this one from the Crab. Yeah, this guy is an aggressor. Shame that they moved and wasn't kicked out, since DMs need to be willing to do that in cases like this. I actually have a LG paladin written up who is a bitch herself, but it's due to her living a hard life and represents good not being nice (base on 3.5's Grey Guard). The idea is that she slowly warms up and starts being nicer, and stop using the end-goal to justify the means. Playing a mean LG character is possible, but what this player did isn't how. "Your Spell Just... fAILs!": I think the DM wanted to kick OP for awhile and saw this as a prime opportunity to do so. And got to love DMs blaming the player for thinking outside the DM's box. "bUT rOLePLaying is bOring": If it wasn't for Steve being a problem in combat, I'd say he needed to be in a dungeon crawling group. However, it's obvious that he was a problem player overall. I assume the DM mention that there would be RP in his game, and Steve just ignored him. That sounds like he would do base on what OP told us.
I personally don't see death saves at advantage as an issue. But that's just me tbh
My first proper DnD character had advantage on death saves because he was an Unliving. The flip side was that he only healed half as much from magic or potions, so it balanced out.

Not gonna lie I feel the first DM, having a close friend who is a good friend but a terrible player. And not even from a roleplay perspective, I had a friend who'd literally argue with me and accuse me of taking away his agency....because he chose to do something and failed the roll. Tried to run from Boss fights too.
In the first rp I ever participated in, another person wanted to join and straight up told the DM that he wanted his character to be, "really smart but really annoying." I was concerned because that's how the person claimed he was was IRL. (Annoying yes. Smart, not so much.) DM told me he was going to allow this person's character but warned the guy that his character was going to be immobile in case he got to be too much and would respect the party's decision if we wanted to just ditch the character.
Should have made one of the NPCs a secret dragon and tell Steve "roll initiative, deadman."

Perhaps it is the rolling of the theater plays?
That centaur story was a real case of the DM needing to kick the player much earlier.
I once was a player that was easily bored when it wasnt my turn and so I would tell other players at the table to hurry up and slightly complain if they took to long. Later I realised that I was behaving in a very rude and unpatient way, so I started to controll myself and waiting way more patiently at my turn. Sometimes, when I realise that I am again not giving the other characters enough attention by going on about what my character is doing, when its actually their turn, I am kind of ashamed for my exuberant enthusiasm, apologize and tell them to continue with their characters. Fortunately my DM is very patient with that (Me, the DM and the players are friends irl).
Most people in a D&D setting probably DON'T understand how magic works. Magic is the realm of the educated. In a philosophical or spiritual tradition if you're a cleric, druid, or paladin. The arts and social studies if you're a bard. The science of the Weave if you're a wizard or artificer. So on and so forth. It makes perfect sense that a character like that would be confused by and curious about magic.
I have a serious gripe with that first story, see, there was a very simple solution to the DM being annoyed that OP’s homebrew race was “too powerful” or whatever, get this: It’s called: “Tell them you changed your mind on the homebrew and ask them to stop using it, you twat” (insult is optional of course) I’ve been on the receiving end of a DM who okay’d a risky character concept and then proceeded to punish me in-game for… Them greenlighting it in the first place. It sucks, it’s frustrating, and it’s a really easy problem to solve if you have a mouth and common sense, but for some reason these kinds of DMs always skip right over any kind of peaceful negotiation and jump right to slamming the nuclear button, it boils my blood to no end
Love these ^^ Always a pleasure to listen to as I cook and game prep!

"Roleplaying is sooo boring!" But it's the whole point of the medium. RPG. Role-Playing Game. Quid pro quo.
I like that you have that book in the back, Necronomicon, Iown one myself, great taste in books.
I love when characters think of something I did not as the DM it truely makes the game that much better!
Role playing? In a roleplaying game? But of course. D&D horror stories mainly exist because bad behavior is tolerated. If chatting with the player doesn't get them to sort out the problems, then remove them from the game. Giving someone a second chance if they promise to do better can also work out, though if they havn't changed then there is no need to let them take advantage of your kindness.
He’s saying that he wouldn’t have approved homebrew for advantage on death saves, but there’s already a lineage that gives you advantage on death saves, it’s base game at this point 💀
Wait, wait, wait, the guy in the first story was playing a Monk with 6 Wisdom?
In light of the absolute clown that stepped on the creation wizard because they apparently had a specific solution in mind and couldn't be bothered to do improv, I'd like to share one of our often-recounted stories. In my homebrew Ravenloft setting, my players are a gentlemanly british journalist rogue, a Catholic-adjacent monster hunter sorcerer, and their wereraven noble sidekick. They arrived in a town and very quickly met the sight of a masked killer over a body, had a brief encounter in which the killer demonstrating being an EXTREMELY powerful caster, before they escaped. Later they came to learn that this was a serial killer who had been draining blood from the bodies of all of their victims. Along their investigation, they narrowed down two prime suspects; a quirky meteorologist with some form of vampirism she was hiding, and a troubled teenager who seemed to have one of the knives used when the players encountered the killer. By this point, there was an equal amount of evidence for both parties, and they were stumped on how to proceed. So what did they end up doing, you ask? You see, the sorcerer had the spell Sending, which allows you to send a short message to someone you are familiar with. The description only specifies 'familiar,' no further knowledge required other than vaguely knowing the individual. So they had the wereraven observe one person, and the rogue observe another, while the sorcerer maintained telepathy with the rogue. Then they transmitted a loud scream, sent to the killer, looking to see which one of them flinched. Now THAT is how you use your abilities creatively! I allowed it because that was some clever shit!!

I know the dm of the thrid story would have hated one of my characters from Werewolf the Apocalypse. If that dm was my story teller for my character Shake n Bake's, SnB for short, story he would have hated the mentality SnB had. One session the pack and their rivals were challenged to create a new fetish, think spiritually imbued weapon or tool, in one day's time. Now creation of such objects requires purifying the base object itself by either keeping it in running water, burying it in the ground, or placing it in a burning fire all options takes three days to purify. As the only wolf born werewolf, SnB simply chimed asking' "Why not use a river stone for the base item?" When the suggestion came from his "mouth" his pack just looked at him as if he was a genius. The reason they were surprised is SnB was easily known for being a very dim bulb, prior to his First Change he was a domesticated zoo wolf and he as old as a young teen in human years, so not really smart or even knowledgeable. That simple solution to the problem of purifying for three days probably would have enraged the dm.

So about the Homebrew Race story... How did he fail on those rolls and where is that -2 coming from since in 5e death saves are 10 or better on a bare (no stat) d20 roll? Only 1 of those 4 shown rolls should have been a failure, and that Nat 20 would have been complete success since it should have restored 1 HP. I can only assume that something else was changed in the rules (maybe out of spite, maybe just in that DM's world) since instead of having a 55% (10-20) chance to pass each roll and overall a 59.5% to survive, he seemed to have 20% or less chance (This assumes that a 15 would have succeeded, which he would need to roll 17+ to make) to pass any one of them. I’m sorry, advantage on death saves is NOT broken… all it would mean is that your character will more often than not stabilize themselves. That does not prevent enemies from hitting them while they are down and/or indirect damage from hitting them. They can still easily die when downed and faster than it would normally take to die from saving throws.

I started to play DnD last year just by random, and I'm now in 2 campaigns, soon to be 3. One of which is streamed. I'm so happy that none of these horror stories have happened to me yet, as the group I play with are some of the nicest people I know. I also use these videos for guides on what not to do, as I realised I did start to have Main Character Syndrome, so now I'm starting to catch myself out when I notice it,

Hey, man, advantage on death saves is something that is reserved for upper level material. Could you change that? Other then that I'd love to have you back for next session.
The DM In the first one, the guy said "Otherwise he was a great DM." It sounds like he was a dreadful DM. Hating a player at your table and getting mad at their RP as well, that's just sad. If you read this, know well, you are a terrible DM.
(Role Playing) I have a story about an awful player in D&D: for context I was told this from my friends who had to deal with this person I wasn't there to experience it so all the information might be a bit muddled. The person who I'm going to call him Ken, and my friends who I'll call Ron, and Sean who played with him played several games of D&D together and my friends and the other player HATED him. The best I can remember what they told me about Ken was that he was very problematic to play with, kind of like Steve and the Paladin in this video combined. He was angry that things didn't go his way and sometimes wasn't even in his own games that he ran. All the people my friends included have not heard from him or left him, and it's probably for the best.
The Reborn race from Van Richten’s guide gives you advantage on death saves. Would you ban them too?
That centaur guy. They must have been young. There's no way an adult would tolerate that behavior from another adult.
Pain from hearing engrams drop and not being what I wanted

I dunno if it's just me but that Centaur seemed like a stereotypical "stupid evil" player, someone who plays evil(or in this case play a good allinged character like they were evil) characters just to be an edgy jerk. Now you can play evil, even chaotic evil characters without being a total jerk to other players you just need to play with notion of "my goals demand that I stay on the good side of these people". As for that story with the Creation wizard and the door, I suspect the DM had very specific encounter in mind (probably a fight to keep the enemies from the person casting the teleport spell or something like that if I had to guess) and panicked or got mad when the player was easily able to bypass that encounter and instead of adapting chose to punish the player for not reading their mind.

If you want to play evil without being an edgelord jackanape, think Xellos from Slayers series. Evil but willing to break bread to serve his motives.
Story 1: that player's character had such a minor racial it seemed, since ideally you're trying to have your character avoid dying and that would be the only time that racial would kick in at all, and it doesn't seem like it does anything else, so it only has an impact if you're in a situation you already didn't want to be in and have been doing your best to avoid, like a dwarf's poison resistance is already better then that simply because it will come up far more often ideally. That racial only becomes a problem however if say, your goal as a DM was to kill the player's characters, in which case it would probably get annoying as the DM as it would make it a bit harder to complete your goal of killing characters.
It's so easy to get around death save advantage? Confirm kill, autocrit, bam that's two fails. One fail, or one more attack, and who cares if you don't die easy? That'll do it. Like there's really no issue?

Trying to intentionally kill your players in a heavy rp campaign is already cringe enough. Ps, why would jackalfolk have advantage on death saves? Is that a thing jackals are well known for in real life?

@@draconicfeline6177 oh yeah. forgot about that guy.
I'm confused why would you put -2 wisdom on a Monk? Isn't that heavily nerfing your abilities or is it one of those things that are weirdly viable?
Question: why do some people refer to a single person as they, when that word refers to two of more?
I loved the background story excuse for the low wisdom score in the first story. Shame the dm was such an a-hole.
Maybe the real demons were our paladins all along!
Is advantage on death saves really that big of an advantage? I mean they still need to make a 20 to regain a hit point. To get back up. It’s taking a player need to use their turn to heal them to wake them up. Doesn’t matter if they stabilize if they’re Ally’s still lose.
if something overpowered makes it into a dnd game i think it should be fine especially if its not enough to hinder everyone elses fun
Even if I had 8 Int, I wouldn't touch the blood vomiting child either to be honest.
Roleplaying? You mean the R in RPG?!?!

I'd like to find a dm who is willing to let me start off with an Oathbreaker Paladin. After a few levels, depending on how things go, the paladin takes the Oath of Redemption. Had anyone tried this already? How'd it play out?
So I have a strange problem. I've only been dm-ing for about a year on and off. Probably a total of 25 sessions. Recently started dm-ing at a game shop and have two other dms in my party. One is my boyfriend. I play in his game too. Because I'm new I ask how certain mechanics work. Last problem was how improvised weapons work. Essentially 1d4 and then some kind of bonus. Problem dm starts out by saying how some dms rule it, saying it's ok to use a similar weapon, aka a club ect, as weapon damage. Which isn't what I was asking. I can't help but feel like he's backseat dm-ing while trying to rules lawyer his own preference. We literally argued until I told him it was just a single d4 plus his strength. Am I an a--hole?

No. No, you are not. It's fine to give some input if your DM is asking for it, but once they have settled on a ruling that should be that. He should have shut up and accepted your ruling instead of trying to force you into his home rules.
Why is it that every one of these D&D stories all seem to revolve around 5e? Hmmm I wonder?
They said everyone votes to kick you, you have every right to verify that information froms others.
For the centaur story why was he rolling d8s and not d10s which is what a paladin has as hit dice?

It said 8 or higher, and he probably figures all 10s was too unbelievable.
How do you play DnD
Scree you guys, I’m going home
Roleplaying?? In an RPG??? What are these people, crazy???
Roleplaying?! Uuggh, not in MY dnd!
Why was he playing a mink with -2 Wisdom
Was Steve named after Steven Seagal? Because that's how he come across.
I cannot believe someone was having an issue over advantage on death saves. First of all, they're often rare. Second, the best standard result would be that they stabilize at 0 hp, still out of the fight, just not dying. Boo hoo?
Isn’t nat 20 up on 1 hp?

People who don't enjoy role playing at all should maybe reconsider playing a role playing game

I am actually ok with self inserts, they can be done well, but you need to be honest with yourself, and other players, so when you for example make the stats, if you know that yourself isn't very strong, maybe putting a 15 in strength won't be the best of ideas and so fourth. But doing it well can unlock a wonderous part of yourself that can be hard to find nowdays.

That's a very different kind of "Self-Insert" than what the story is talking about. A self insert in most cases is talking about someone trying to live out their power fantasies. They make characters better than themselves in most every way, but don't actually play a 'character'. They just keep their own personality while wearing the skin suit of someone they'll never actually be. It can take a lot of forms, from "this character is super powerful" to "this character is really charismatic and can have sex with anyone they want".
Advantage on death saves sounds like a lame bonus that’s not op at all. Like it just means your character is less likely to die. Not better at fighting, not better at social interaction or exploration, just less likely to die. Why would that break your game or ruin your experience dm? Why? Give me a good reason that doesn’t make you sound like an evil dm.
