I understand that an old dude throw daggers as mage/sorcerer, it was what you did back in ADD to save spell slots, so basically he seem to still be stuck in ADD.

@@TrackerRoo Back in the days wasn't cantrips a thing, don't remember if they enter the game in 2nd or 3rd edition ADD wasn't it any cantrips so throwing daggers or other throwing weapons or maybe sling was thing you needed as a wizard.

Depending on your stats, daggers might be a better choice, especially for low level characters who have a choice between ~1d10 damage from a cantrip like firebolt and 1d4+dex bonus. I'd occassionally take doing 4-7 points of damage over a random 1-10.

@@cgdavidson honestly, a tip of mine is to roll with literally any name you give someone, even if it sounds too silly. Tia the Tea shop owner is extremely thematically appropriate and has the possibility to be a beloved NPC.

imagine trying to tell someone what they should be doing or demanding they do what you do, when you can't even grasp your own character sheet?

Intro: At least it was just awkward. Generally Irritating Main Character Syndrome: I'm guessing the Sorc is way too used to the old days were cantrips were limited use, and throwing daggers was a viable alternative. Too bad that is the least of his problems. I do wish that they gave Rogue the option of rejoining them without Sorc. Maybe that's what he would need to leave Sorc of their relationship is toxic as well. Do agree with Crispy that OP and his friends should have talked to Sorc, even if it likely wouldn't have changed much.

One of my most memorable blunders was in my M&M campaign. Party is raiding a lab belonging to one of the major villains. What I was supposed to say: "In the Box you find -description of important things they find-" What i said: "In the box you find a surprise." I then moved on to what a different player was doing without elaborating any further.

Unfortunately, this seems like the kind of situation where talking with Sorcerer wouldn't have changed much. It's pretty clear from the descriptions of his house plus his other personality quirks that he had some unaddressed psychological issues (I've heard similar stories from untreated ADHD sufferers, for example), but more to the point, it seemed clear he had no *interest* in addressing those issues. He was happy existing in his own little world of dysfunction, and if other people weren't happy about it, that was their problem.

Yeah, I'm autistic and I've come across this type of neurodivergent people in the community from time to time. They are either not diagnosed or simply don't care about what it entails for them. They are inflexible to the extreme and probably the reason why autism is seen as an anti-social condition since it sticks out so much and usually means the person needs lots of support to work with others. At his age, this guy probably never got diagnosed and even if he were, he'd be too set in his ways to change. It's sad, but not the job of a DnD group to be his therapist.

I see your basic human guy and basic house stuff and raise you my 'its, like, a building. made of bricks.'

There are times when I might feel sorry for a bad player- but this is not one of those times. Good that OP found a better situation to play in though.

@ the Intro...yeah, I made the same flub in ToA where I described a merchant as a normal human woman. The way I delivered it was stilted and since she sold arrows my Player always went out of his way to announce when he was going to fire his normal human woman arrows.

At times, I wasn’t sure who the problem player was as OP stated that sometimes it was the warlock and sometimes the wizard who were making the snide remarks or being the problem.

Please do remember earlier in the story op did say session one there was a tpk so characters would be different (idk why not just use the updated classes but yeah hope that clears it up)

Sorcerer is one of those people who should just play a single-player RPG game. You're always the main character!

That first story... holy crap did I feel that.

Oh god I was in a pathfinder game before where this "necromancer" (he was a sorcerer but he called himself a necromancer) just kept interrupting with "rules" and how "this is what the rules say" but they were always completely wrong, I'm positive he was just making some stuff up, but he insisted any time anyone power attacked, it triggered attacks of opportunity from everyone around them, that he could just keep casting spells over and over (he probably cast like 10 at level 1... in pathfinder) claiming they can do a bunch of stuff, he claimed that because I touched his cloak it counted as an automatic critical hit on me with a touch spell attack (nope) and that he got like +10 permanently for every roll every time he killed someone because his god was evil (what?) and that if the cleric healed my character he could take permanent control of him, and that my paladin should lose his paladin powers and become chaotic evil for punching him in the face while he was trying to KILL my character "you can't just punch people for no reason" what again? The whole thing was a freaking mess all because of this guy, there was no second session

This is a very late reply, but your experience reminded me of the very first time I ever tried playing a TTRPG. It was a vampire game (don't remember. That was how hard I tuned out) I'm going to make a character. DM says no need he's a psychic as if I'm supposed to find that impressive and hands me a character saying that he sees I'll be a good fit for her. So I start a little annoyed because I don't get to make my character but reason that hey. Maybe he just needed to get the game started. Que 4 yes 4 HOURS of constant bitching about the rules between one player and the DM. I don't remember what I said in the last hour but it was something like if we can actually get shit done already? We did some stupid ritual, and nothing was accomplished. There was no session 2.

Hard agree, letting the Rogue make the decision to side with the other players against the Sorcerer might have been the push he needed to get out of that toxic friendship, and potentially come out of his shell.

I finished saltmarsh about 3 months ago and wound up quitting with like two sessions left because of a sorcerer. Think I've mentioned this in other videos. Funny how our sorcerer also wanted to take a magic weapon that he couldn't effectively use. My friend was the one identifying loot and found out a Trident had abilities that would compliment their own abilities and kept it. Which our sorcerer then said, 'I take the trident'. Dm didn't allow this since the character in game wasn't saying all of this out loud. So the sorcerer didn't actually know the weapons abilities

If it were me, I might've either let Sorcerer have the cursed ring, or used the last wish after the curse was removed to deal with him.

“Basic house stuff” makes perfect sense, standard furniture (table, some wooden chairs, a short stool or two, couple of beds, wardrobe, pantry cabinet), kitchenware (pots, pans, knives, etc). My response to the DM would be: “Great! Ok, I grab a cast iron skillet, and point the others towards any other iron cookery stuff I see. Is there a fireplace? If so somebody grab the fireplace pokers. These are demons, grab iron and silver gang!”

Intro story. There's a running joke that whenever someone disguises themselves, they do so as a badic man by the name of Hugh Mann. Lol

OH for the intro story I have had a simmilar experience with my DM! (homebrew campaign) We were waiting to see the Baron of this province, appearently already awaiting our arrival. We just got back from a war site and have heard contradicting stories about her. So here the party is, waiting outside the conference room, when with a slam the doors open, and person stomps out. My DM, clearly trying to get in character, discribes the scene as thus: "Out from the conference room steps this Elfen elf. She is wearing clothes and has her hair. You see her, vehemently flipping off the people inside the room. " (He then jumps into dialogue and we all get into roleplay) I didn't point the funny discription out during the game, for I saw that my DM was just trying to let this NPC have her moment, and I didn't want to break the emersion. I figured if it would be important I would just ask the DM to discribe her again. After the session was over, I told him this had happened and after a good laugh he gave me a quick discription. I absolutely adore these kinds of moments!

I mean, that can still happen, it's just not as acceptable as it was before.

Well one issue with long term D&D players and an issue I face often, is I have 7 different systems memorized, and can easily start doing a thing which was normal play in 2nd or 3.5 or even pathfinder, or Iron Heroes, but not something that can or should be done in 5th. It's less of a problem now after a bunch of years on 5th, but my fear is 6th will be around the corner, and they will reinvent the system again. I'll be honest here, 1st and 2nd paired well, 3rd, and 3.5, and SRD(D20) paired well, but 4th and 5th don't really pair with anything, their are a bunch of "homebrew" 5th D20 that fit nice, and 5th is a great system, but I do hope and pray the 6th is just 5.5 and not a new thing that doesn't pair well, again, because people like me can only memorize so many rules before it becomes too much. Edit: Also not everyone can do voice acting, sadly some of us have difficulty just talking, ie me autistic transgender I've really worked hard just to have what voice I have, doing different voices tends to be very hard. However, I do inflect a bit more, but it's not me voice acting, it's just me being a life long DM.

The basic normal looking human guy, in a house full of basic stuff, next to what is basically a basic dirt road

Me, dm: theres a bunch of giants far away from you as you travel, they seem indifferent. (Just for flavor and fun for travel) Player: how tall are they Me: uhm... 80 feet tall? Player: wtf thats way too tall Other player: nah if he said 80 feet then its 80 feet. Its cannon. Everyone: *argues for the next 20 mins if 80 feet is too tall or not* Me: 😶

While it doesn't absolve him of his behavior, I can't help but wonder if Sorcerer doesn't have early on stage dementia. I've witnessed it with my grandmother and I can tell you it can make you act IRRATIONAL.

Okay on the persuasion thing: if someone isn't exactly charismatic, you shouldn't punish them for it. Persuasion and charismatic skills are the only skills I've seen where the dm has you exhibit what you do irl and if you aren't that charismatic and fumble things irl then why punish the player. The roll speaks for itself and you shouldn't punish them for not being as charismatic as their character irl.

There is a difference between "Hey we'll give you money and loot if you work with us." And " Join us or die." You are right that you shouldn't really punish players for not being charismaticat the table (something I'm working on.), but it is completely acceptable to call them out on what they are saying might not have been the best choice of words and have they have to see that.

@@talldorf6445 how I handle things for "social combat" I roll a d6. The result is how many points the opponent has (min 2) and the players can discuss how best to combat the various ideas. Each idea has a DC. If they beat it by 10+ they get a bonus to all future points in the combat. 5+ they get a bonus to the next point. I can assign more bonuses for making a good argument or coming up with a clever come back too. So my rolls still valued but I still get some rp out of the less charismatic people.

@@richardalatorre4006 sounds like a cool thing to do and try. I generally don't roll if it's a great argument. My issue has been what was said. If it were me it would have been at disadvantages and ridiculous high persussion. A normal intimidate check. Things like that.

the one with hindsight/foresight/insight is very clever, and wouldve made for a fun party dynamic if one of the players wasnt an absolute dickhead. I mean, Star Trek pulled it off fine.

My question is, how did they not bail on that location? Oh no, the weird old guy who bitches all the time cant play. But at least the player with asthma wont die from breathing in air that has a literal hardness level thanks to years of cat dander.

@@TrackerRoo i agree. At some point before the last session they should have left for a new place. It reminds me of pathfinder society game I was in. The dm was a chill dude and the party was okay. But the adventure made you feel crappy. ( it was army basic training or some crap.) It was rough and left a bitter taste in my mouth as a player. Even if you are the nicest guy, if you play a super dick, you can ruin a players experience. Guess in trying to say is that yes, you can go find other players and get away from toxic situations, even if the guy gives you stuff.

@@TrackerRoo It took a while for the problem player to get bad enough that everyone would leave him. And it's probably easier to have cat allergy medication than whatever's needed for the immunocompromised. Not helped by the problem player apparently being nice when they aren't playing.

Wizard gave him a nice healing word? What wizard has access to healing Word?
