    My name is Yoshikage Kira. I’m a Human Warlock. My house is in the northeast section of Neverwinter, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an accountant for the Kame Yu Guild, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. After having a glass of mead and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up from a Long Rest with my Spell Slots restored. I take care not to trouble myself with any problem players, like DMPCs and PVPers that would cause me to lose sleep at night. Although, if I were to PVP, I wouldn’t lose to anyone.

    On that last story... might be worth looking into the laws in that state. Statute of Limitations for such criminal conduct can last quite a while. The cut is usually somewhere around 20-30 years and it may or may not have hit yet. I bring this up because people that start out doing those things almost always escalate. If that suggestive conduct happened in the 90s you can be sure some actually physically harmed victims now exist... What we've found when going through case backlogs is that predators of these kinds of crimes are very rare, but highly serial. People who start out with minor crimes are almost always the ones who get violent in later decades. When you look into serial attackers later on - you're almost sure to find decades of "not reported" stuff or "not taken seriously" reports. So... even if the statute has expired. Out the creep. Make sure someone looks into what they're up to now.

The DM was an absolute piece of garbage, and the way she treated you was inexcusable. You did absolutely nothing wrong here. Third story: I… I don’t know what to say here. Intro story I'd say isn't a horror story except for the guy whose home they were in. Yoshikage Kira jokes aside (and let's be honest, my brain jumped there too) simply having a fetish isn't a bad thing in itself. Just about everyone with a libido has *something* they're into that their peers would consider strange. And unlike the vast majority of kink-related stories here, the guy wasn't using the group to indulge his fetish or otherwise make it everyone else's problem. It was just a horribly embarrassing accident that ended up exposing something the guy would have preferred remain private at an age when that sort of thing can feel like the end of the world.

    I'm a Dungeon Master, and I make my players roll to hit walls and other stationary objects, but in my games, it's not a "the wall dodges" or "you missed somehow despite it being stationary and right in front of you" it's just whether or not they succeed in actually causing damage to said inanimate object.

  • @VeronicaWarlock

    @VeronicaWarlock

    2 күн бұрын

    In official modules stationary objects usually have an AC and sometimes a damage threshold as well, so this seems accurate to me. AC is a combination of Dexterity and armor, so it’s not just a matter of “missing” when you fail to “hit,” even for mobile targets. But DMs should take that into account when describing a “miss” as well, and of course judge whether a roll is needed if there is no consequence for taking their time (ie making endless rolls).

  • @Jsuelieta
    @Jsuelieta4 ай бұрын

    Caution: rant incoming The concept of AC being a 'hit or miss' thing is grossly misunderstood, I feel. It's not representative of if you didn't connect, it's representative of if you did damage, but I usually like to flavor it based on where the AC comes from. If you managed a 16 against a fighter's 18, the blow glances off their armor, against a barbarian you either totally did miss, or they turned the blow so it was an annoyance but otherwise harmless, against a monk they parry the blow and redirect it away from them. If you roll a natural 1 or just below 10 (the normal starting point for AC), then yeah, you just slip and miss, your footing was bad, you lost your grip, something like that but you missed, which can totally happen against a wall. Against a wall, though, you're likely going to hit it every time unless it's enchanted, it's the hardness that's going to say "You didn't hit it hard enough to do any damage. You still hit it, but you didn't do damage." Unless of course it's an illusory wall or the whole place is just illusory so you're not swinging where you think you're swinging, but I'd expect a will save or something then. All of this to say, of course, that the only time you should be rolling to hit an inanimate object is if there's a threat. Enemies baring down on you, the wall is a mimic, the ceiling has deployed spikes and is baring down on you or the object is going to explode if you hit it, which is a roundabout way for a DM to say "Are you sure about that?" without actually saying it, if they can establish early that that's a clue they give without breaking immersion too hard. If you establish early that calling for an attack roll on an object with nothing immediately threatening around (why you would need to is beyond me, but some people like to attack doors instead of opening them) is a quiet signal for "You probably don't want to do that" then it's probably a little less flow breaking than stopping everything to ask "are you sure?" TL;DR: Attack rolls on inanimate objects are pointless unless something is threatening. Roll damage, check against hardness and be done with it.

Worse, is when there's some kind of ledge I need to jump/climb, and for some reason, I just didn't notice how to do it (like where I could land or climb). Edit: I'm sorry I need to add, BUT WTH IS THE LAST STORY OH MY GOSH THAT'S JUST F UP. Okay so me and my friends had our first DnD session last Saturday, it took an hour to kill a dire wolf, not because we were rolling low damage, no its because we couldn't hit the damn thing, and since I was the DM and a player (it wasn't supposed to play out like that but because our og DM ghosted us and I'm the most familiar with DnD and have the books I decided to DM but I already had a character rolled up so) when it was my turn and I tried to throw the wolf (I had it in my mind that anything above a 15 should do it), I rolled a nat 1 and said "as Mahkah tried to pick up the wolf, he falls over on it and kills it instantly and takes 4 points of damage" I rolled a d6, my character is also a 650lbs tortle, so it would make sense the wold died as soon as my character fell on it

    Just thought of a fun way to use failure and still have them find what you need. Success: you walk in and instantly see the mcguffin sticking out of a pile of dirt on the floor that didn’t really do much to cover it. Midway: you walk in and at first don’t notice anything too strange, but there’s a mound of dirt that seems a bit less packed. Upon scrubbing it away, you find the mcguffin Failure: you walk in and go for the wall, but you trip over a previously unnoticed mound of dirt, and in doing so uncover the mcguffin. Like…a perception check is on perception, not on finding necessarily. You can roll to decide how the story looks and still have it happen the right way. Kinda like those CYOA stories that you end up in certain moments no matter what you do. And that way you can (if you want) add a degree of apparent uncertainty from the player’s perspective while still giving them the necessary stuff.

    The only time you should roll to hit a stationary wall, is to see if you crit. That's all. And if the rolls don't really matter (like searching the room for the key that *_MUST_* be found), just have the highest roll determine who accomplishes the task first.

    Story 1: if you're going to just have rolls continue until there's a success, either don't ask for a roll at all or have the degree of success/failure of the roll determine how long it takes. And I usually interpret AC for an inanimate object not being how hard it is to _hit_ but how hard it is to get a _solid_ hit in a vulnerable spot to actually do some damage. (And unless it was in combat, I'd still just ask for one roll to determine how long it takes to get the job done.)

    About the wall, I can understand that the DM found a stat block online of a wall with high AC but... that's not dexterity based AC, it's armor based! I mean, if you get an 11 against a plate armor enemy, you hit him, you just don't do damage because the armor blocked the attack, but you definitely hit the target.

    Creepazoid: These responses I am pausing as they come so these are stream of consciousness. This line I have gone back to add. If you are an under aged person reading this, do not try to handle these things on your own, bring them to an adult. A teacher, a parent, a doctor even. If a friend is experiencing this bringing it to the attention of an adult may save their life. I wish I could say that this was a sure fire solution, but doing nothing is worse then trying and failing. It doesn't matter who is doing it, this is never ok. If they dont listen, bring it to another adult, keep fighting until someone does and the situation is resolved. Like Crispy says, get help. The moment that the DM started RPing romancing with a minor that was it. That was the red flag, and the adults in the OPs life should have stepped in RIGHT then. Im a mandated reporter, and yeah I would call up CPS for that kind of behavior. Mandated Reporters have special exemptions on the standards of reporting exactly so that we can make these early calls. *Gets to this kiss on the lips* THIS IS GROOMING. Even if you arent trained to spot and hunt pedophiles, this is an OBVIOUS red flag. He is intentionally violating boundaries for inappropriate contact. Some families do kiss on the lips but for a step dad to be the initiator.. like I said I would have already called CPS, I would call again for this. This is enough for most people to call CPS or the police. *Gets to the next part*.... I really hope this ends with this creep in prison, for the rest of his life. The backing off is a common pedophile tactic, it doesn't mean they have given up and even if it does it means that they are looking for different victims. And a homophobe on top of being a pedophile, what a surprise. Incidentally most pedophiles do identify as straight or heterosexual; pedophilia is about violence and power.

I had a new name in mind, so I made a girl character with that name and used roleplaying to try to get a "feel" for what kind of woman I wanted to be. I ended up on kind, loyal, and optimistic to a fault, lifting up others while also making it clear when I needed some lifting myself. Now, I'm 1 year on HRT (as of today!! 🥳) and I'm still using the name I picked out so long ago :)

    Another tip for the "infinite rolls": as a DM, you should have an NPC. Not just to point out certain things you want the players to find. The NPC should also have a sufficiently high value in the skill so that - once he has given the PCs another roll via a gentle hint - he can "risk a look" himself if necessary and then "succeed" where bad luck prevented the PCs from doing so. It doesn't seem so forced, it doesn't seem like you're taking the agenda out of the players' hands, you have a back-up plan for essential hints and since it's (hopefully) only rarely necessary, the NPC suddenly becomes very popular because he does more than just stand at the side and give instructions. There was also once a goblin thief who accompanied a group as an NPC - and only became active when things got stuck and was practically a pure support character who didn't take any agenda away from the players. They were still the focus, which made him popular despite his usefulness.

    I only started DMing a few months ago and I've been running modules (I've gradually been modifying them to work into a larger narrative). Each of these modules have a few DC checks, a handful of which are necessary to progress. It hasn't taken me long to realize that, any time I ask for a skill check, there needs to be a condition for both success _and_ failure; or at the very least, determine the level of success. If there's a chest, a skill check _will_ open it but also determine how good the contents are. Well a nat 1 or low enough might break the tool being used but anything between like a 5 and the DC will still _do_ something. And I never add punishment to a low roll that I've asked them to make; I welcome them to try creative tactics and solutions but they understand that there will be (minor) consequences if it doesn't work

    What up crispy, figured give you another shout out, figured I'd ask your opinion of this super-able being, he's more of an ex villain than a hero, He's called The Parasite, he's one of those people that people can't remember, he hangs out with wolverine and says he's his favorite person cause Logan cares so little about other people he can usually make it through most of a conversation before Logan asks if they know each other. Anyway this character was a psychic who would torture people from long distances until he stumbled onto professor Xavier who raw power scared him and he tried to erase his presence from Xavier's mind and ends up paralyzing his mind and body, so he ends up screaming out in pain in his own head paralyzed, he gets eaten alive by a rat, well during this he imprints on this rat so now when the rat gets close to other mutants his psychic power starts draining the cognition of the other mutant, it kind of acts like a dampening field for mutant abilities sometimes even turning them off completely if they are weak, well this guy has trouble leaving notes and messages because they take to much of his concentration for him to maintain physical form and the beast he is bound to gains dominance and usually tried to flee, it's like a 2 part thing it takes his psychic outreach and the draining of others for him to appear physical disrupting either causes the rat to gain control of their "partnership" cause when he appears physically he has more control of the rats actions. Well because his appearance is so burdening on others their minds actually don't ever remember him cause he's technically draining their ability to do so. Anyway just figured wanted to hear what you thought, technically an amateur story maker have had a tough time making a career out of it because neurotypicals just hate me for some reason(probably cause I'm white) the only people who don't seem affected are mentally ill who's brainwaves don't behave normally and truelly good people who base thoughts soley on the evidence of my actions, anyway DumbBest Earthling Out

    Most of his adventures are caused by the rat escaping and getting into trouble, and it's another thing whenever he talks to the professor he talks about how scared he is to have his entire life bound to this creature who could end up getting eaten by a cat or live the rest of it's natural and he could just disappear which is most likely less than a decade

And then the players spent longer than I though trying desperately to guess "I was murdered and had my tongue cut out. only time i let players roll dice after dice is if it a time limit and the it is a limited amount of rolls they can do before something bad happen. Let say i got 4 players trapped in a rooom which will be filled with water in 4 minutes and every roll take 1 minute to do and a success make them find the key to get out. if the 4 rounds is up and they havent found the key yet would it be harder to find it and now we start another time limit and it is based on the drowning rules. This can create tension and suspense and can be cool to use from time to time, for their every roll count and isnt just meaningless waste of time
