The DM Let "That Guy" Become an Actual God - RPG Horror Stories

Ойындар

Phew. I was watching Cyberpunk Edgerunners while handling this edit. That was... intense. But hey! I definitely have something to remember this video by. In any case, this has been a very busy week, so I'm going to be taken it easy. See you Monday!
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from Reddit and my own email while giving advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Speaking as the original author of SCP-999 "The Tickle Monster", I can assure you it was not written with any kind of fetish in mind, but rather an attempt to make an SCP as wholesome and as innocent as I could get away with. I have seen plenty of Rule 34 of 999, though, which honestly I find hilarious.

Intro story: Yeah, that’s hilarious. First story: I have a couple of campaign ideas in my head based on RPG horror stories. I’ll hear the horror story and think: “You know, that’s actually a really cool campaign premise. I bet I could salvage it.” This story just gave me a new one. Second story: I was honestly surprised at how well that ended for everyone. I wish this family many more wonderful adventures together! Third story: I don’t think you can truly call an upbringing sex-positive if you don’t teach the kid about consent and what is and isn’t appropriate to bring up around other people. Obviously you don’t want your kid to grow up ashamed of their own sexuality, but you also need to teach them that some things are inappropriate to bring up in certain contexts. Teach your kids to not be creeps!

Hey! Writer of the God game/fiasco story here! Glad to see all the typos I totally missed the second time around lol. I noticed a few comments that seemed to be a bit confused about some of my word choice and thought I'd chime in to explain, when I mentioned "Dreamtime" for some reason my mind had gone to the Aboriginal world origin mythology and kinda, arbitrarily decided to use the word to refer to the whole world creation portion... Just in case anyone was thrown off by the odd reference, I realize that might have been a strangely specific one lol. It was beyond surreal to hear that story I wrote read back to me, and there's definitely a lot of horror stories I've got that I could tell. Thanks again, love the channel 😊

Anyone says Dream time to me and that's the one I think of... Wasn't aware of another until now, and I think I'll continue to default to the aboriginal dreamtime. Dreamlands is Lovecraft. And I'm nearly 64, so my primary referenced are probably a little "old fashioned".

So that Pantheon of Gods creating a world thing? That's a real thing with, like, actual mechanics, and it's really fun. Really recommend trying it some time. Don't even need to play an actual game set in the world you built, I think the world building is fun in of itself. I would have a horror story about it of my own, but I did salvage some good times and pretty useful insight into worldbuilding. Also, roleplaying as a God of Magic, even if for only one short session, was pretty dope.

As an Autistic person (who also happens to be a social worker), I can tell you D&D is a fantastic tool for folks on the spectrum. It’s a great social opportunity, the rules and expectations are clearly defined as long as there’s a good Session Zero, and the roleplay helps people learn to see things from others’ perspectives. Not to mention, we often have great imaginations (contrary to what many professionals will tell you), which can lead to some cool characters and adventures! It certainly can result in some misunderstandings and hurt feelings, like what happened in the story presented here, but if those can be worked through in an understanding way, everyone can learn and have lots of fun!

The gods writing the world reminds me of the way the McElroy's started their Ethersea campaign (though with a lot less gods involved). They used a game called "The Quiet Year" to establish the history and setting of the world. I ended up downloading the game and playing it with some friends, and then introducing it to creative writing students. Highly recommend it! There's a pdf version as well as a physical copy available. Very cool world-building game.

Including this because it’s cool and people will hopefully think this is cool: For the scp explanation, when day breaks is one of the possible scp-001 proposals (there is no official number 1, keeps the canon open) which is a scenario where wherever sunlight touches all living beings melt into a collective ooze which also melts any living things it touches into its gestalt self. Also the tickle monster is a wholesome sapient ooze with childlike behaviors, eats candy, and is able to bring joy and treat sadness of any being in comes in physical contact with.

This idea of being gods and creating your own world in dnd actually feels like an awesome concept! If I ever get to play dnd again, since I have no one to play with, I’ll definitely recommend this concept to the dm. I did have the chance to dm to a group of friends once, but it kinda ended poorly, and made me not wanna dm ever again. Maybe I’ll try sending it out to the channel later, because even though it’s nothing remarkable, it left a sour taste in my mouth and I have to get it off my chest.

Hey Crispy, thanks for reading my story, even if it was a bit of a non-event. You're right, we should DEFINITELY have done a session 0, but this was in the way-back-when and having a session 0 to establish boundaries just wasn't on our radar at the time. The group also all knew each other and had RPed together a lot at this point and were pretty familiar with the style of play we all had, which this kind of backstory most definitely was not. Genasi are humanoid elementals. The setting in question had (a possibly home-brewed) very rigid caste system between the different elemental types. Also, dual soul is apparently not the name, and I am completely mis-remembering that content (in my defence, it was almost 15 years ago). As someone else guessed in the comments I was probably thinking of double manifestation (allows you to manifest two different elemental types at once) or possibly the Elemental Tempest paragon path, which is all about using multiple different elemental types.

Okay, #1, thanks for featuring a tale of Sew Good, the party in the first story you showed this episode. The whole party sat down and watched it today and everyone really enjoyed it. I’m the Wizard of that party, just wanted to state, I wasn’t planning on using Wish at all that encounter. At level 14 we should’ve been more than competent enough to deal with that Nightwalker. Anyways I saw how the first wish went down and the wheels started turning. If wish could make the Paladin level 20, why not make the whole party their best selves. It was a lot of fun in game, and I’m glad it gets to live on the internet forever now.

Honestly, the Collaborative World Building sounds very fun to try out honestly. You just need to make sure you're with the right people, cause like...there does need to be conflict in the world...but if someone is being a duck about it like "This gets ruined! And your thing gets ruined! Everything gets ruined!!!" Then yeah, its not gonna work so well. Like its meant to be collaborative. One player shouldn't be allowed to be like "I'll destroy everything you make, and everything you make. All while making my own evil shit! Agahahahaabafhdicbsixb!"

For the last story, I wanna add to the session 0 advice. Gms please for the love of all that is good have a list of things/themes you want to avoid, have, and consider using for the campaign. Even if you feel like its a "no-brainer" topic. You can't guarantee the table the exact same world views so this has a chance to save headaches down the road. It can also let players consider topics they might not have thought about for their no-no list. It won't stop problems from happening but it at least reduces the ones that could happen mid-session.

I get the wish thing, it’s a powerful spell, but that can also be a good thing. For example: I came up with a character whose entire purpose was to get strong enough to be able to use the wish spell to bring back a sibling who had been sacrificed by a cult. They had managed to barely trap most of their soul in a ring that they used as their arcane focus, so one hand would occasionally try to ‘tidy up’ his hair, and he would talk to it, essentially acting as in-game explanations for notes, as he had always been absentminded.

As a 4e delinquent (in my 3rd campaign of a modified 4e with a group of friends going on almost 10 years now) I think they are talking about either double manifestation or extra manifestation. These are feats that allow you to have a second element manifestation or change yours respectively I think its that since the lovers two differnt manifestations, if the character was also air then maybe it could work for them.

this episode gave me flashbacks to my own pantheon RP game. It wasn't d&d, it was just online role play with zero rules kinda free-for-all and we really should have gotten together to establish some boundaries and brainstormed a plot direction together, because when someone inevitably decided he was the most powerful god and he was also going to be the evil antagonist, it lead to a lot of conflict, character bleed, and chaos and it ended with the discord server getting nuked. I am still not all the way over it. Like sheesh. Maybe mortals weren't meant to wield the power of gods LOL.

But a story line where a man out to prove himself realizes that he was in love with a idea of a woman and not the person she really was only to love a changeling so much that he accepts her when she reveals her base changeling form. Yeah I'd watch that movie. But for a game you better have a bunch of OKs in writing and even then expect the player to change their mind on RPing something that long and convoluted.

Unexpected bond huh? 🤔 Yeah I actually had one of those in my game. This is a nice story actually. So I joined an ongoing campaign, around level 5 (they just turned level 5 right before I joined). One of the first things that the monk and I noticed about our characters is that, without our intending it, the pair seemed to click. So the player and I discuss that. We note a few things, that both our characters as stoic, are skilled in combat, deeply protective of what they care about, absolutely terrified of losing people they care about, and are extremely disillusioned by the ongoing war and want something better. Now, for all that these sound like we are overlapping a lot as characters, we aren’t. Monk is an ex-soldier who was born and raised as part of a noble house in the country the party is currently in. While he isn’t the smartest or the most charismatic, he is very good at combat and war tactics and has lots of connections due to his nobility, his time in the country’s military, and his most recent past as a very blood thirsty mercenary (he had enough of a character arc by this point for that reputation to be something of a point of shame to him). As for my own character, they are good in combat, it comes naturally to them and they were given a mentor, it was more a necessity that came from having a sword decide they would be their wielder and they had to learn. My character is more of a scholar, loves people and learning from and about them, and is actually passionate about linguistics. They are a romantic, used to taking responsibility for things and enduring for the sake of others, and are still learning to live with the grief of losing their late fiancé. Tragic accident, not bbeg thing. They are also centuries older than the monk (monk is human) so there is that too. Even so, these two clicked immediately and the monk was the first person my character trusted to tell about their late fiancé. The reason that is a big deal? Because my character's fiance is a citizen of the country at war with the one the party is in, which means its the country the monk fought against when they wete a soldier. The reveal actually highlighted some of the biggest part of the monk's character growth when he accepted that and actually requested that my character teach him the language of that country, so he could learn to be understanding of both sides. Over all, it helped in his arc right now with him throwing of the binds of others trying to weaponize him in one form or another. It was an amazing moment. Also was one of the best ways I realized to get my character to more permanently stay with the group, as they genuinely wanted to see this “kid” (relatively) go far with this. I also enjoyed playing out my character’s rather observant and insightful nature and how they pick up a ton of cues from others, often reading between the lines of what they say. I work really hard to not meta game this part, make sure to include such things in my notes just to make sure, but this is also one of the reasons the party jokes that my character is a “super spy.” In all fairness, they aren’t wrong, but it wasn’t a trope I set out to do. But back on topic. I really enjoyed that the monk and I had that click. I knew I would click with the cleric since my character has something of an older sibling vibe and compulsion for caretaking and the cleric definitely has younger sister vibes (was sheltered before). I knew the artificer and I would click as we were of the same researcher faction and were scholars who had a lot of respect for each other, even if different points of view and motivations for pursuing the knowledge they do. I knew the wizard and I would click as being from the same hometown and both of use being friendly and the type to want to be understanding. I even knew the ranger and I would get along as both of us had been given and passed the trial of the same god (a storm god so the theme is the ranger is the lightning and my character is the thunder, as they aren’t a strength, not a dex, build). The monk and I? I kind of expected us to clash a lot and the player and k had discussed that before I joined and while I was still in the creation process (I make my characters around the party, story, themes, and campaign rather than bring in something entirely premade). That was supposed to be the point actually, and was going to push both down their intended arcs. However, no plan survives contact lol, especially in dnd. Soon as monk and I had our characters spend time together, plan together, and watch each other’s backs, the two of us got along like a house on fire. That’s why monk’s player and I discussed where we wanted to go with this. I will say, we are both having fun with this still. My character is actually going to be more truly open and sincere with the party because of the friendship of these two, and I’m hoping monk and my character can achieve the dream they both talked about, which was to visit and learn from that other country, and maybe, just maybe, end that war. Who knows.

I was going to speculate that the barbarian might have been before Terrible Witch Mom came along to ruin that name; but the fact that it's an e-mail rather than a Reddit post says otherwise, which is kind of mystifying. The second story with the players playing the gods and going through the creation myth of the world that the actual campaign is gonna be set in. That's actually not super uncommon. There's a game called "Dawn of Worlds", that was created by a gaming group many years ago for that very reason. They had the idea that if they were all involved in creating the inital creation, backstory, and lore for the world the campaign was set in they'd all be more invested in the game. (I"m pretty sure there's some youtube videos out there with D&D groups playing it.) From what the OP said, it sounds like the DM took that and changed the wording in a few things, and instead of each person deciding what god they were, instead just made a list of gods they wanted in the world to randomly assign to everyone. I've played it a few times, it's surprisingly fun, though I've never actually gotten to play it for its original purpose of the prelude to an actual D&D campaign. But it can be really fun with a group that doesn't consist of assholes with an "I win or nobody does" mentality.

Lots of dark comedy. 2nd story had me thinking of a character from the above group's main campaign, with similar vibe to Crispy reacting to Owl House character. Otherwise good family game and learning experience. 3rd story I expected to be worse before the time skip to messy break up affecting living conditions for group. Just another story about forcing an in-game romance. Not really related but this reminds me of my desire to play a genasi that's more elemental-looking than human, someone that could be mistaken for a unique monster race rather than a humanoid with some features.

So long as the idea is a prequel to collaboratively build a game world that the players will adventure in, a-hole going full evil and creating a massively evil god for the player's to kill isn't the worst idea. As a DM you just need to pick up your moment, take over the once enough world has been made to make the campaign world playable but before he's completely fucked up the fun things the other player's create and at that point narrate Evil-Goth the Lord of Blacklight being sealed away by a union of the other gods. Boom, big bad for the campaign world built. Even let the a-hole player attempt to become a following of the Blacklight cult but make sure he gets sacrificed and forced to roll a new character.

Including gods into the RPG should be a standard practice. My friend put in Cayden Cailean, The Accidental God of PF2e, under a tree that was just chilling and he then gave us a flask of beer that could be used once per day per player. It took us a few sessions before we learned who he was though. I also put to gods in my first adventure of Scion 2e, to death gods (The Spirit Rabbit of algonquian mythology and Hel from Norse mythology), they had missed a soul each in a castle and Rabbit just called Hel on his cellphone and told her to come over.

Sidenote on the prelude - I'm not a fan of Wish, at least as most groups seem to run it, due to it seemingly encouraging an almost adversarial relationship between GM and Players. Also the 'the exact words you say are the exact words your character says' thing feels more old school than modern D&D to me.

I don’t play dnd very much but gmless worldbuilding games are my bread and butter so that second story came into my house and disrespected me on the day of my daughters The Quiet Year session. (This is gonna be a long comment but I added some recommendations at the end if the worldbuilding pantheon story sounded cool to you! I mean! Conceptually! Minus how it actually went!) Listen. The only way to lose. A collaborative storytelling game. Is if you and your friends don’t have fun telling a story together. If it was a really gmless game, someone should have paused, used an x card, had an after game talk, something. That responsibility is on everyone at the table if there is no gm. Sometimes players get really focused on winning because of a fear of losing- if so, it’s good to have a lines and veils talk (which you should have for these kinds of games anyways) about what they really worry about happening, and if you can just take that off the table as a group. (Though it does seem like this guy was more concerned with ‘winning’, which is just point blank frustrating and missing the point of this style of play.) I think a lot of players have some real insecurities about getting authorship over their characters narrative, because so many of us have had less than stellar experiences with gms. As people building a story together, it’s important to build trust and say ‘this is a part of the narrative I’d like to have authorship over, please don’t step on my toes’ and ‘I know this is something you introduced, do you mind if I add to it/make a change?’ Just! Seeing other players as competition in games where they fully arent is the exact wrong mindset to have and it! Drives! Me! Up! A! Wall! Nobody is going to attack you unless you keep ruining the experience for the table then I might be about to manifest in your walls as slime mold which I guess counts. Anyways. Sorry for rambling, I promised recommendations: Top one is The Quiet Year, involves drawing a map of your world that develops during play so you get some fully fleshed out geography by the time you’re done, super simple rules. Also, contempt tokens, which should be a mechanic in every game. Divine | Mundane (hack of Mobile Suit Zero: Firebrands): heavy on the role play, set some boundaries ahead of time, but it is explicitly about a pantheon of gods both good and evil and their worshipers. Has a system for going on an odyssey and receiving visions in your dreams. Also, a whole page on sword duels. Absolute banger. Microscope: Oh, you wanted WORLDBUILDING? This game lets you build anything from like… a single ant hill to an entire galaxy, over millennia or just a day. Surprisingly simple system for the amount of detail you can create, very good at sharing focus and giving people authorship over the parts of the story they’re excited about. Totally setting agnostic. I’m Sorry Did You Say Street Magic?: What it says on the tin. Not as setting agnostic, but it DOES slap for writing myths and cool stuff. Fiasco. Not actually about worldbuilding but nothing will knock you out of wanting to win faster than this game. Trust. There’s endless more worldbuilding games out there, it’s a whole genre, I highly encourage everyone interested to explore it! Remember: WINNING is FAKE, LOSING is FUN, OTHER PLAYERS are YOUR FRIENDS, and STORIES are for TELLING not for WINNING

Hey Crispy. Just as an aside, in the Player's are the Gods story near the beginning. You already know what SCP is by now, but the Dreamland part is actually a H.P. Lovecraft reference I believe. If the op knew her autistic sister so well they should know that the way they spoke to her in game in character could, if not would, hurt her on and above table. Just hearing it as an audience member was hard for me as someone with ASD. It didn't sound like they spoke about their boundaries to the sister about what she was saying about the dad, which is where she needed communication. Not having those social skills makes a reprimand feel out of nowhere and extreme if you don't give all the context and be direct. For example I'll try to fit in with banter and end up saying things that cross the line because I can't see the line. If you show me where it is, I don't do that anymore. When I know the rules I follow them.

Watching these, I'm honestly taken aback at how consistently people fail to be constructively confrontational with one another. While it can feel satisfying or even prove instructive to share horror stories about other people, it's a little disheartening to hear how often people let themselves off the hook for doing stuff like quietly starting new servers and removing one player without TALKING to that player about the problem. I know people don't like to view their own patterns of nonconfrontational behavior as problematic or worse, but that's exactly what those patterns of behavior are -- not only in tabletop games, but in every aspect of social life. It's disrespectful in the extreme to expect other people to read your mind, and to punish them when they don't... even when they're acting in ways that seem obviously obnoxious from our perspective. We all owe it to one another to be clear and transparent about our issues and give others the opportunity to improve, and it's incredibly disrespectful (or even cowardly) when we fail to do so. None of us have the power to control other people and their behavior, or dictate whether they change their irritating social habits... but we DO have the power to be more healthy and positive in our reactions to that behavior, and to do our best to be and model the change we want to see in the world. Just my two cents. I enjoy your channel, and I especially appreciate the effort you put into pointing out where the people writing in also have room to improve and meet other people halfway. As a social worker, my favorite "horror stories" are the ones people share about their OWN behavior -- the places they've learned to be better and do better, using TTRPGs as the medium for that positive self-work -- rather than venting about other people who might not be aware of their own behavior. I think it's easy for this stuff to veer into the mean-spirited in ways we don't necessarily intend or realize when we're sharing our experiences with other people, especially in a forum as public as youtube. But insofar as this helps folks recognize the importance of clear, respectful communication (and enforcement, where necessary) of boundaries and expectations with one another, I'm all for it.
