D&D "That Guy" Cheats and Obsesses Over Perfect OC - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

Been thinking a lot about character creation recently, so this story really hurts me. Sigh the ancient wisdom endures, some people are simply dumber than others.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Technically it's only 4. Cavalier's have a animal handling check at advantage if they are riding. Born to Ride, assuming these were checks to keep on the horse. However, even then 4 disadvantaged checks made little sense based on the odds.

Jesus, there's no doubt he's cheating and has a REALLY creepy crush on the sorcerer OOC. Plus, lets face it, I'd probably kick him for swearing me out because, on principle, you should never have to deal with that, on top of the other toxicity he's been pulling on the DM here.

I actually created a program that lets me calculate the probability of things to see how likely they would be to occur, so I can use that to see how unlikely it would be if That Guy did the race legitimately. So according to OP, the person made 10 checks in total, 8 of which were at disadvantage. Because disadvantage involves using two dice and taking the lowest, that means he would have needed to get high on both the dice in that check. So he actually made a total of 18 dice rolls. Then according to OP, all dice got a 16 or higher. There is a 1 in 4 chance of a dice roll getting a 16 or higher, so we can simplify it down. Plugging the numbers in, we have 18 attempts at a 1 in 4 chance, with all 18 needing to succeed the 1 in 4 chance. The result is a number so low, my program cannot actually find the exact result. It operates by making 10,000 simulations when you run it and counting how many simulations would succeed, and 0 of them were able to produce that number. I ran the simulation several more times and still couldn't get a single positive result. Skipping the program I made and using math instead, we can calculate the chance with 0.25^18. This turns out as 1.45519152E-11. So less then a 1 in a billion chance.

This is why public dice rolls are so important. That series of rolls was certainly "possible," but extremely unlikely. I hope someone was able to direct OP to a bot or medium that makes cheating a little harder. For the record, I do believe the player was cheating. It's just difficult to accuse someone of cheating without doing your due diligence and providing evidence. I myself once calculated the applied XP for a player in a living PTU server, as well as that of three other players with similar play times to find a fair benchmark. When compared to the recorded earned XP, I found a significant amount of of unaccountable* XP (2,000+), even after allowing a generous 500 XP to account for any that we may have failed to record. He had also applied much more than the players with similar session counts. He tried to claim my numbers were "off" (two other GMs checked them before we talked to the player), but did eventually admit to cheating and we remedied the discrepancy. Documentation matters, but I'd prefer to play in a game where I can trust the GM and my fellow players.

@@Tirath Had a player get around that by using loaded dice. It was 2e so he actually had two sets, one for high rolls and one for low rolls (in 2e you often need to roll below a certain number to succeed.) He was also a rules lawyer, had all the books memorized and was constantly meta-gaming. It was kinda fun for a while, none of us actually took the game seriously (except him) so it was good for a laugh. I'd slightly change stats on creatures and modifiers or call for the wrong skill/stat check, just to mess with him so when he noticed he'd immediately pull out the book to make sure he could prove he was right and "correct my mistake." The last time we ever played with him he wanted to DM, so we let him, and pulled all the same shit. He lasted about two hours and never wanted to play with us again, either as DM or player.

Look, I’m proud of some of the characters I’ve created. Some I’ve formed a very deep connection to and I’ll always hold them dear to me. If I ever wrote a book I might consider incorporating them. But there’s a difference between being proud of the fun characters you’ve made and believing them to be all important. At the end of the day they’re just your ideas. Some of them may be very good or well thought out ideas but other people probably won’t share the same enthusiasm for them as you. Like to me, my characters are my babies. But just like with a real baby, you shouldn’t shove them in other people’s faces.

I’m a new DM and we almost had a horror story tonight. I have the classic edgy rogue dark past in the party and recently she got in a bit of trouble an accidentally killed people (which was partially my fault since I didn’t tell them about non lethal damage and they are a new player) The rest of the party is good aligned and got upset when they found out. The fighter kept asking why and the rogue was cursing everyone out (in character lol) rather than complying. It reached a point where we had to hop OOC to ask the rogue player how they’d feel if their character died. We talked about letting our characters be vulnerable with each other and were able to somewhat resolve the scene, or at least hold off on the conversation until the party has more information. Very proud of my players tonight, lots of backstory stuff came up, and PC’s learned a lot about each other. We also talked to the rogue player about potentially making a back-up character in case thing’s don’t work out with this current character. :)

That guy unfortunately has multiple issues, which in combination are probably not solvable: 1. cheating, 2. main character syndrome, 3. living out his real life crush on the only gamer girl by obsessively romancing her characters in game 4. Being an immature brat who can't take DM rulings and resorts to yelling and threats to leave the game if he doesn't get what he wants. Number 1 alone would probably be easily solvable by just using a dice rolling program (without accusing him and discussing prior cheating, calling such players out rarely ends well, but they might just roll with it if you quietly remove everyone's opportunity to cheat) Number 2 can be resolved with mature players by just having a good talk and by the DM trying to create more scenes that specifically play to other characters (either through their special abilities or their backstory), but can likely not be resolved with a self centered person who also suffers from problem number 4 Number 3 doesn't even have to be a problem as long as the player knows it's just meaningless ingame fun and the girl player doesn't mind (I mean, someone having a crush on you can be flattering and fun, as long as he doesn't stalk you in real life), but with an immature player like that it is a ticking time bomb, because such people do have a tendency to both take in game rejection poorly and take in game success in romancing the character as encouragement to press the romance issue out of game, again reacting poorly to rejection. Number 4 is really the worst problem of all. There is only one solution: Put your foot down, tell him he has to cut out his crap and that yelling at the DM over the game and not accepting rulings even after the issue has been discussed and compromises have been offered is unacceptable. If he can't cope with that and behave, he has to leave.

i would forget the cheating as long as everyone has fun. now Cussing the DM because he wanna do whatever he wants. is more than enough to talk with the other player, tell them about the behavior, and explains what caused the meltdown. i dont recomend setting him up, but. i think he is the kinda prone to burst of anger, so i wouldnt be surprised if you could catch him on the spot saying "he failed, and something happen to your oc" which doesnt even have to be a bad thing. example. tiefling fighter find a magical sword, he takes times to attuned, give me a charisma check, fails? you hear the echoes of dozens of souls in suffering, you awake in cold sweat, and fear. - then imply something might be going on with the sword if he likes the sword. have it destroy [with the chance or being repairable] if he dislike the sword and drop it somewhere. tell him, he will dream of the sword until he destroy it both solution are to -release the entraped souls- and the sword can be repair to keep the magical properties. if he get angry, you can stay silent, and point out that you dont feel comfortable DMing for him anymore.

Concerning the story... Let's set full-on dismissal aside for a moment. OP more-or-less handled the situation well; he told tiefling how a thing was going to work and stuck to it. If tiefling isn't mature enough to adjust, that's his problem. To all the DMs out there, always tell your players how things work in your games and be firm in your decisions, ESPECIALLY if you suspect someone of cheating. Never be afraid to tell players "No" and never let a player give you guff over it. If they can't accept that, it's on them, and it's significantly easier for DMs to find new players than the other way around.

So, I was playing in a game with my brother as the DM, and my mage got hit with Magic Missile (early in the campaign, so this was the first time). I reacted with Shield, and he responded that if I couldn't see him aiming at me, in the first place, I couldn't do it. I was confused, because I forgot which mini was mine, and though, "But I can see him?" When reminded which mini was mine (we just borrowed from his collection), I saw that the angles did make it clear that I was being shot in the back, so it would take me by surprise. I said, "OK." I was only arguing angles, not the judgement, itself. Now, I am Doing a game, as well (we alternate), and I looked up that spell, as well as Counterspell. Counterspell says that you must see the target casting the spell. However, Shield says no such thing, and it specifically says that the trigger is actually being HIT by an attack (Magic Missile or otherwise). So, at our next session, I plan to tell him. "Your game, your rules. My game, my rules, and in my game, we will go with RAW, that says that Shield does NOT require that the caster see the attack." I will show him both Shield and Counterspell, to drive home the point. Why am I making a deal of it? Because he's playing a wizard, so he'll NEED that information, to effectively cast spells. I'd hate to have him lose a reaction cast, just because his little marker has a "blinded" marker on it, or something like that. Yeah, it doesn't make sense in "real life," to react after being hit, and actually block the hit, but it's rules as written, and I'm OK with that. Meanwhile, if he chooses to continue the idea that "you have to see your attacker to cast Shield," in his game, I am OK with that, too, because it's his game, his rules. He's doing it for verisimilitude, not to be cruel to me. In short: DM has final say about the rules as played in his game. Period. The ONLY exception to this is if you hired him specifically to play by YOUR rules, and he decides to change them. A paid employee does what his employer says. Again, period. Normally, you can give feedback and even pushback, but you do NOT swear at him, and give ultimatums! Pushback should be limited and gentle. "I don't think that's what the rules are, as written," is fine. "I think you made a different call in a similar situation two weeks ago," is also fine. But "that's not faaaaair!" is not fine. Also, even if RAW is otherwise, or he made a different call two weeks ago, he's making a call NOW, and that is literally his job. If he's making the call differently now, he has his reasons. A good DM is consistent, and if he is consistently inconsistent, then that is a bigger problem about whether or not he favored you on this particular judgement. If his reasons for making different calls are good (such as, "I read the rules again," or "I saw this house rule in a professional game, and thought I'd give it a try," or "I gave this some serious consideration over the last week,"), then do NOT argue further. If his reasons are not good (such as "Hahaha! I love pulling a fast one on you!" or "I couldn't let my girlfriend be hurt!"), then don't argue further during the session, and consider the underlying issue causing him to make bad judgement calls. Then, choose your actions moving forward, accordingly. Either you choose to live with it, or you choose to leave. But you still don't swear at him about it. And if he's a paid DM, hired specifically so you can rely on him to follow your own rules, and he's being a tool about it, because of some stupid reason ("I must be chivalrous to the attractive maiden!" or, "But my STOOOOOORRRYYYYYYY!"), then your option is to tell him to abide by your rules, as per your employment agreement, or terminate the employment. Again, understanding that the problem is not that particular judgement, but the underlying issue that he does not recognize that you hired him, specifically for a reason, and he's going against that reason. If I had the resources, I'd hire Matt Mercer, and the whole cast of Critical Role, and I'd STILL tell them, "My rules: If I need a break, at any time, we break, even in the middle of battle, because I don't want to miss stuff, just because my body has issues. I'm paying for the privilege. If we have to call it a session in the middle of battle, I have Plastitak, to stick all the minis in place! Also, no PvP, no romance, and please keep swearing to a minimum. Sam, I love you. Please play as if your children were present. Also, I don't want to have to roll to see if Raise Dead works. I want that spell RAW. Otherwise, standard Critical Role house rules are fine with me. I respect the DM's authority." Please note: In my opinion, hiring a DM to give your character special favoritism treatment (Anything above a 15 counts as a critical success for YOU!) is ONLY acceptable, if you also hired ALL the other players to play with you, specifically so you could enjoy the privilege of playing your own personal fantasy, where you are the over-powered main character, and they are supporting actors, there just to make you look better. IF they are also paying the DM, then they get equal treatment as you, including buy-in on the house rules. If they are playing for free, because you invited them, then they get equal treatment as you, except they don't get to make house rules. They may suggest them, but they didn't pay for the privilege of enforcing them. That is my opinion about DMs, paid and otherwise.

@@AuntLoopy123 I'm going to counter the paid DM point a bit. If you pay a DM to run a game for you, you're also paying for his interpretations, so in that regard you kind of have to follow his rulings, though you still dictate the overall house rules. However, if the paid DM isn't abiding your house rules or things just aren't working out, then you are free to terminate the contract and seek a new DM. Also, the "Overpowered Main Character" scenario nearly always busts early. Such games tend to be fun only for the one player who's the main character.

The problem with probability is that rolls going in one direction despite the odds can happen, just getting a dice bot would've solved this issue. Of course the teifling is obviously into the girl that invited him, also if she doesn't ask for help don't think posting negatively will be helping her (don't assume she's a 'damsel in distress' for you to save). The summon spell is an issue though, depending on party size it could go from helping in combat to slowing combat to a crawl, I'd ban the spell personally and just tell players to check in with me before getting their hopes up for any character build. Lastly immediately upon swearing or yelling tell him to knock it off or leave the game, in front of the player who invited him to make sure he doesn't make a scene (or justifies why he was kicked, either way works).

Unless you're running a player thru a solo campaign you should never cater to the whims of a single player above that of the group. "The enjoyment of the many outweigh the enjoyment of the few- or the one."

My dm just killed one player character for the 3rd time in a row over nothing then seconds after the 3rd death killed another after he failed a single dex save against the thing that killed the other player. One player left the game and the rest of us are upset to say the least.

Playing online dnd without a dice bot. That's just *asking* for players to cheat on their rolls.

I wouldn't call having an actual character of yours ( Be it for art, stories, or something else ) be your DnD PC being a problem. It's main character syndrome that's the problem. I personally use my own OCs for DnD, why? Because they're.. mine. I already know how they act, how they think, and oftentimes, already have art for them. I don't do the whole stealing other people's art thing for their PCs, I want to use art that's mine, that I either made, was gifted to me, or that I commissioned, and so far.. My guy just kinda hangs out at the back. He's there, he interacts with things, but he's more or less just happy to follow everyone else's lead. You can have main character syndrome and be using an OC, sure, but I wouldn't ever call it being the same thing, because it really isn't.
