Insane DM Bullies Players out of D&D with Crazy Campaign - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

DMs may have all the power in the game, but that doesn't mean they have any power in the day-to-day.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I (Crispy) read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

    "I don't like the race you chose, so you don't get any of your racial features." If you really hate the race that much, just don't allow it. Don't act like you're going to allow that race and then take away everything cool about it. The DM has every right to say, "I don't want you to play that race." He does not have the right to allow that race and then say, "Yeah, well, I don't want you to have those racial features, so I'm just taking them all away from you. And I'm rewriting your backstory to justify my decision." Just say, "No firbolgs." Done. That would suck for the guy who really wanted to play a firbolg, but at least that way you're being honest and upfront with him. You're at least giving him a chance to play a different race whose features you are willing to let him have.

    @Naukumaija Mau-mau Hence why session 0 should always be a thing, that is when the characters are created, where everything is explained, if a player says "Oh, I want to play as X", the dm can quickly say "Sorry, but those are not in my world/I can't allow you to play as that race for some reasons that I can't disclose at the moment". I told my players the book they could choose their race from (Fantasy Age), after that, whenever they asked me "Can I play as a fox/robot/whatever" I told them, sorry, but those things would come LATER. But yea, you have to QUICKLY shut that down. Also, I find it very odd when players present me with a completed char concept (Only happened once), and just expected me to okay it since "It was already done." Ugh...

    I think a more accurate description is that this is the worst horror story I've seen that doesn't either giving a player PTSD or worsening it for their own sick pleasure.

    I've a feeling that B simply took advantage of the situation to drive OP and the others away, almost as if he wanted to not just end the friendship but make it so bad that any chance of reconciliation was impossible. Of course, I could be totally wrong...

    Haha the DMPC talking about past events the heroes know nothing about makes me think of the scene from Zootopia with the elephant that couldn't remember the otter. Hey you remember the time we saved that kid from the bottom of the well? No Oh yeah you tied the rope down and I climbed down I do not remember this

    1:00 while I will it mitt the idea of an Alucard like son of Strad, sounds interesting it just wouldn’t work Lore wise. Strad’s whole thing is that he’s trying to get together with the reincarnation of the woman he coveted. That’s what his motivation is. It worked for Dracula, because the linchpin of his revenge against humanity both times is because of the death of his wife his first wife of sickness and then his second wife being burned at the stake. (now I will freely admit, that has a posting this I have yet to read the curse of Strad module, so all of my “knowledge“ on the subject is from these very videos that talk about curse of strad so I will freely admit that I might be wrong on some pieces but I’m not sure.)

    5 werewolves vs level 1s???? I recently threw 2 slightly buffed werewolves (added like 2 damage and a couple extra to-hit) against 6 level 5s in PF2E and it was a tough fight for them. Took them like 4 rounds to knock out just 1

    The guy who wanted to be the son of Strand, the DM should have said "sure" with a smile on his face. Then Strahd is like "Do you have any idea how many children I've sired all over these lands? Do you honestly think that makes you special to me?"

    GMed a bunch of campaigns where I came with characters ready and the players just picked the ones they liked to roleplay. I don't recommend this for people that are just starting out, though. I don't do this always, but i did in the past and for some campaigns that works better than leaving the players pick whatever. I like to always make three or more characters than I have players so they have options and I have some party helpers and useful NPCs ready (although I despise the idea of GM PCs). You have you to run this with your group on the session 0 and let them pick some characteristics, but i never had a campaign with pre made characters fail because the characters were not made by the players. I had loads of players not wanting to join, but those who joined never took issue with that.

    I'm currently going through the issue brought up of my DM and myself seeming yo have 2 completely different views on my characters backstory. We're still discussing it not playing yet. But I'm getting frustrated by how he seems to want a violent, vengeance fueled escaped slave barbarian. And I see him more having earned his freedom by a bit of a lucky break, and going out into the world and trying to be a force for good in general. My last message tried to voice this, but I'm a little worried my frustration came across more than I intended. Part of my frustration is I've done a short game with this DM before and aside from who his living family were he incorporated NOTHING else about my backstory, not even the families personalities. To be fair the RP part of that game has fallen to the wayside a bit, hence the new game, but it does make me wary.

    I feel like if that dude tried to belittle the way I built my 5e 'Revenant Barbarian/Sorcerer/Rogue ' (I say revenant but it's moreso just a Reborn lineage Human) and calls it suboptimal then he can take his Munchkin metagaming attitude and shove it into the crevice darker than the Underdark. To make a character just to be optimal is boring and doesn't impose excitement or risk, also if he was a player at my group id punish him severely for metagaming

    Yo I don't like the 5e Firbolg either, but if someone wanted to play one in my campaign I'd discuss reflavoring the lore to better suit my world and my view of the Firbolgs. A race I have a far bigger issue with is the Vedalken from Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica, which is why I flat out disallow them.

    Min / Max is not much of a problem (Since its all on the rolls at the end of the day, but the meta gaming) can be really ruining the fun and probs spoiled the game for new players, My issue is when that Bad DM is also a problem player, especially when there intent is to just fk-ed and just ruined plans that goes against players choices.

  • @Logan_Baron

    @Logan_Baron

    That's a problem people have with understanding Rangers though. Bards used to get the same reputation, and are mostly accepted now for reasons. Bards were considered trash because of how people tried to play them. A good example of this was in The Gamers Dorkness rising. "You always play a Fighter. Are you sure you want to play a Bard this campaign" "Yes............ A Bard is pretty much a Fighter right?" and proceeded for the Bard and all future copies of him get killed every single time. Because he was trying to play him as a fighter. A Bard has some Thief/Rogue abilities, but is not as good at them as a rogue. They have some spell casting ability but not as good as a Wizard. Their fighting ability is better than a Wizard, but a Fighter is still better at it. So people said the same thing "Everything a Bard can do another class can do better". And that's not true in either case. Both classes have some abilities that are excelled at in other classes, that they dabble in ALL of them, but they also both have some abilities unique to their class alone. If you want to play a fighter, don't play a ranger because they are "kind of like a fighter" but with some magic too. Play a Ranger when you want to play an outdoor survivalist type class. You can't play a Ranger and be as good in combat as a Fighter, and good a spellcaster as Wizard. Even if one wasn't "as good" why would anyone play a fighter if a Ranger was as good a Fighter as Fighter and also could cast some spells, even if not as good as a Wizard. You can't play a Bard and expect to be as good a fighter as a Fighter, as good at thief skills as a Thief, and as good a caster as a Wizard. Why would you expect that you could play a class that has several class features and NOT have them be done better than another class?
