Good discussion. I think DPZ is talking about different elements of the hobby in regard to what will matter in the future. In my observations, many collectors who have entered or re-entered the hobby more recently are starting to find the lanes they enjoy collecting and it is creating an organic demand for sets and players that may not be the all-time great Hall of Fame players. To DPZ’s point, the other subset of the hobby where financial gain is a greater concern are reaching a breaking point. The margins are too thin for the investors and flippers to continue to take advantage of collectors. The collectors are starting to understand the true organic demand for their cards and are less likely to pay exorbitant premiums when the flippers try to gouge them, which has been Drake’s point for sometime now. I think people in the hobby with a collector’s mindset do need to be cognizant of when flippers and investors move into their market so that they don’t get taken advantage of. However, DPZ is correct in the sense that all-time great players will be the vast majority of cards that are 4, 5 and 6 figure cards moving into the future. The second tier great players may have a lower ceiling, but are also starting out at a lower floor and provide more room to have fun collecting them.

This is why I love buying pre-production autos (proofs) made by Leaf. They come sealed in a case straight from the manufacturer. They are very hard to forge, and they don't need to be graded (and in many cases can't be). They are all 1/1s which make them the perfect collectable. If you want to know it's a real auto, and you assume the card company is honest about it, then these are the ultimate buys.

PSA/Beckett 🤮 even listening to Neos problem with CSG recently, even if it is comic related. SGC should be the new gold standard. Ill take the accuracy of TAG and their nice slabs or Arena with their cheap grading and marketplace features over PSA and Beckett.

There are WAY more fake autos out there than anyone wants to admit. Listen to Steve Grad and it’ll open your eyes to the massive number of fakes floating around. The fraudsters aren’t limiting the fakes to just superstars. I’ve unknowingly purchased fakes of Richard Dreyfuss, Rodney Dangerfield, and Dr. J. Thankfully those were low dollar ticket items.

This is where my problem stands with PSA. They charge a high premium price for their service and people, not me, but vast majority of people who buy graded cards slobber over a PSA slab vs other slab. but here is point of view on this. What makes the grader in PSA better than the grader from SGC for example? Did the grader of PSA go to Havard University and got degree as a grader? In fact, I've seen more PSA fake cards and PSA bad grades, seen spelling errors on PSA slabs, I also seen PSA not add important inforation on the slab such as 100/150 card numbers, they leave that out. I will say, I have seen more inconsistency with PSA slabs vs CGC and SGC. Personally, I use SGC for sports and some TCG cards when they have special on TCG. and I use CGC for all my TCG cards.

Mostly due to covid boom. I sent an order in 2018 or 19, before the boom and I remember my cards were around number 48 million(cert#). My last order with group submitter was a year ago and its 88 million. So they've managed to, in 5 years, almost double the total number they graded before. It wasnt that long ago that BGS was the most popular grader and psa was viewed as the lower quality company(a fair opinion of their slabs). SGC is the way to go. I send them a few pc cards every couple of months, can't beat the price or turnaround time.

I'll say this - The MJ market is insane. Any insert comes up (especially pop 50 or less), it goes higher than previous comp. Especially in PSA 10. The last few months, you are right, the market has dried up and almost impossible to find anything.

So I sent in a psa/dna Jerry Rice rookie auto to get re-slabbed due to a crack. It got put on hold saying they had to cross grade it and that I had to get the card and autograph graded. I agreed to that. Then 2 months later I get charged $70, and they said the authenticity was questionable, without even taking it out of the cracked holder. Then they sent it back to me and wouldn't do anything or provide any explanation.

I got autos ip for a living in the pnw for a decade 2000-2010, did it as a hobby for a decade prior to that. Psa is horrible and always has been. Seen them sticker a ton of fakes and seen them reject many authentic autos.

This hobby is loaded with collectors who have a followers mentality. The fact that Mickey Mantle is the most popular vintage player (despite not even being the greatest of his era) tells you all you need to know. How many collectors focus more on Mickey Mantle because his cards are worth more? I don’t think it’s as simple as non-goats. Tim Duncan is one of the greatest PF in the history of the NBA, has 5 rings, and his cards are dirt cheap. I think there is specific amount of players in the hobby that the masses gravitate to. After that, it’s all about a player and does he appeal to a niche group? Are 22 year old collectors buying Tony Gwynn cards? Probably not. Are collectors from 40-55 years old collecting Tony Gwynn? Probably yes. So non goats like Tony Gwynn and Tim Duncan will sort of hold their value to a specific group of collectors who saw them play. I’ll pay for a Gwynn, Randy Johnson, Jim Kelly and Tim Duncan cards. Will my 25 year old nephew collect those guys? Probably not.

Hello, I think we need to be careful when we say "buying subs". Buying subs is illegal, and youtube will terminate your channel, so I don't think anyone is buying subs. What I think is happening is that they are using the promotion feature that is within youtube to promote their videos in youtube studio. If so, there is absolutely nothing wrong with promoting your brand. These new subscribers subscribed because they must of enjoyed their content, and it's a good way to promote your channel under the youtube guidelines. No difference than a company promoting their brands, products, movies, etc... we are surrounded by advertisements, we live in a world of advertisements, and yet the sports card community seems to have a problem when one of them promotes its brand. I recommend sticking to what you do best and getting away from this toxic jealously that will only negatively impact all sports card channels, because real collectors which you seem to praise don't give a crap a out it. Sincerely, ODN1

I amassed 520+ different Gary Sheffield game used until I shipped 340 off to comc to list. Why? There’s no difference in owning 520 different or 100 different. There is no difference between owning 1 sports card and 2, other than income. Are we not all throwing our discretionary income towards cards, based off economic level, and trying to mentally “keep up with the joneses”. Yeah. Lol. Anyways it’s just a circle such as politics. We can talk about it till we’re blue, that’s why we’re all here, but we’re all collecting based off how much we work or have money In our own lives

Only top tier hall of famers will hold up over time. Of the 274 players in the baseball hall of fame, less than 10% will hold their values long term. If you’re not in the top 25 all time, expect your cards to go down, way down. Same goes for other sports. My two cents.
