Your point of age base was why dealers did not buy a lot of vintage in 90s. As a dealer today this stuff just isn’t available. Collections walk in but it’s 1% of what walks in. I don’t think there’s a bubble, I think what we are seeing the true value being found with realization of how hard it is to obtain outside of large shows.

@@TheSportsCardDad felt a dealer perspective may be a good add. A lot of dealers thought in the 90s the legends will be forgotten, because kids who never saw them play wouldn’t care. Baseball which is great at projecting the history of the game does much better than the other sports. And I believe older non sports is a huge opportunity today.

@@AANCollect I think there is a big difference towards the history of Baseball when it comes to GenX and Millennials/GenZ. GenX was the last generation who grew up when Baseball was still routinely beating the NFL and NBA. I remember in the 80’s and even into the early 90’s, NFL games would shift their schedule around the World Series. Now it’s the opposite. I talk to my nephews and their friends (ages 17-25) and none of them care about the history of Baseball the way GenX did. When i was growing up, numbers like 56, 755, 2130, 511 and .406 were sacred to me. Young kids today don’t look at the MLB record book like that anymore. Partly because the Steroid Era made every record essentially have an asterisk so nobody even knows what the HR record is? Aaron Judge hits 62 Homeruns and is forgotten 2 years later. I worry about vintage cards when Millennials/GenZ get older and Baby Boomers die off. GenX will be the last generation that cares. Now of course there will always be exceptions like Ruth, Mantle, Wagner because those cards are bigger than the hobby. Ask any sports fan under 30 who Bob Gibson is? Frank Robinson? Jimmy Foxx? Lou Brock? Stan Musial? GenX reveres those players, yet i guarantee they are forgotten these days with Millennials/GenZ. It’s sad but it’s a reality. They look at sports history much differently than we do. And that will affect vintage cards in 20 years. Just look at every Vintage KZreadr, 99% of them are better the ages of 40-55 years old.

@@chrisolivo6591 you may be in a vacuum. Your putting personal experience above the entirety. Baseball is the best seller in cards (it’s not arguable) you are repeating what dealers said in the 90s. The players you named have never commanded big value in the card industry. Go to the mantles, the mays, the Clemente, the actual stars of the sport. Kids ask for them and know who they are. I see it every day in the shop, shows, and trade nights. Have to watch in the areas the hobby lives. Trust me, genz and millennials are buying just as much vintage as gen xers.

Let me take a hobby history view on this for a minute. The question of an aging collector base vs supply & demand from other generations is something we've been through before. Prior to the 1970's 90% of vintage cards were in the hands of 10% of collectors. Once our hobby pioneers starting to pass away, we saw more vintage out there, but that didn't mean that it was always affordable. Baseball Cards magazine ran an article in the spring of 81saying how shocked they were that vintage was spiking. We see in the early to mid 1980's where you could purchase 1933 Goudey Ruths for $60, and I've said that it was vastly easier to find and purchase certain cards when I first started out, and $60 for a Ruth in 1983 may sound cheap today, but financial data is relative. Factor in the inflation rate, how much was the average collector making financially in an hour or a week? My concern is when I got into vintage at 14, I wasn't in it for the money, and I did so because I found them to be an education for me going forward. I think we have to seperate vintage by pre-war and post war, Just how many of each is being bought and sold by demographic? And then there's actually interest and knowledge of the card and player. I believe that there are too many people in the hobby who are in it for all the wrong reasons, and by that, I mean for the money. I won't tell anyone how to collect, but if its solely for the money, there's going to be a quick burnout, I've also said too, that if I had to start over today, there's no way I would be able to. When it comes to vintage grades, most 1950's cards aren't difficult, and much of it is overinflated. With that said, there are still great deals, but you have to do your homework on the cards and players. True with pre-war. When I was in high school in the 90s, you could pick up T206, T205 commons for $5 and HoFers between $20 to $60 and most being about $40. Piedmont and Sweet Cap T206 aren't rare, just overinflated. Dutch is my favorite President outside William Howard Taft, so that's a great card! Sinatra is also in the 1947 and 48 Kwatta Chocolates and the 1955 Kanes Gum set. The T68 Heroes of History Abe Lincoln is from 1911. I took a reprieve from traditional sports cards to get into vintage Soccer, Cricket, Golf, Tennis and Boxing and Cinema Stars cards. The latter of which, you may enjoy 1928, 1934 and 1938 John Player's Film Stars sets. I'm going to say something really unpopular, but the only time I've gotten burned from a vintage card, is through ebay because of the quality of the photo provided. When you know what to look for and do your research, it becomes less of an issue. I know for certainty that I'd get burned with Modern because I don't know much about it.

Good thought-provoking questions. We had a lot of youngsters running around the Fargo, ND, card show last weekend. Some were buying vintage. I got a lot of conversation out of my 1904 Sitting Bull SGC graded postcard. I've just started grading the old Indian Chief postcards, we'll see what happens. I've also graded a couple 1928 & 29 Men of America Bobby Jones booklets with Rogers Hornsby on the back, the rest of the set is famous Americans like Edison, Franklin, Walter Camp, Kennesaw Mountain Landis etc. I also just bought a 1940 Black Feet Indians of Glacier National Park print set. I will be doing a video on that in the near future.

Never thought of the 80s as vintage!! I’m buying PSA/SGC 8s of 1969-1972 non-rookie football and basketball HOFs-and those have big pops to be honest-but I’m a set collector and need them. I agree that buying mid-grade from this era is probably not wise for the long-term collector from a financial point of view.

I don't collect sports cards with the thought that they'll go up in value. I collect for the enjoyment of the card, the player, and the design. I have a graded 1972 Topps Roger Staubach rookie card, one of my proudest purchases. While it may go up in value, that's not why I bought it. Roger's a hero and a Cowboys legend. I have dozens and dozens of junk Cowboys cards that I've culled from 25 cent bins, and I admire them as much as I admire my graded 2020s Cowboys inserts and parallels. Nobody's gonna want my raw 1993 Pinnacle Troy Aikman card, nor should they. That's not the point. There's nothing wrong with buying cards as an investment piece, it's just not the primary reason why I collect.

I am almost 60 so my main collecting days were the 1970's. I own older cards too but I am getting to an age where I want a smaller collection so I will sell off the mid career cards of HOFers and buy or keep their Rookie Cards which I think will continue to hold value. I do agree certain players like Mantle, Aaron, Koufax, Clemente will continue to hold value. Very few Rookies from the 1980's - 2000's hold value with the exception of the GOATS like Jordan, Griffey, Jeter, Brady. Look at the Rookies from the 1990's...some great players but too much supply so they will never be valuable. Short-print and insert cards took off in the late 1990's so some rare cards of the GOATS should stay valuable.

The biggest stars of the 1950s-1990s baseball meant more to pop culture than many of today's stars due to fractured media and television rights.
