Dragging Sutekh backwards through the time vortex wouldn’t bring everything in the universe back to life because the vortex isn’t the physical fixed realm and also Sutekh wasn’t originally trapped in the time vortex. Death to death brings life! What utter crap! We’ve had magic hammers, magic gloves, magic earrings and intelligent rope! 😂😂Just stupid. No doubt RTD will say we’re in a fantasy realm and so any fantastical plots are permissible but wasn’t the Toymaker defeated and so why would we still be in this fantasy realm? Clearly RTD can’t write science fiction and relies on badly constructed fantasy. He can’t write the Doctor properly and so creates a bi-generated Doctor so he can sexualise and humanise the Doctor for his own pleasure. It’s a stinking mess.

Season 7 remains one of my all time favorite eras of Doctor Who. There is just something about these episodes that was never quite replicated again in the later Pertwee stories. There were minor flaws in each serial but the writing, the companion in Liz Shaw and the way Pertwee played the role so strong and action oriented are vastly better than what we have seen in the past 5-6 years. Can anyone imagine any other Doctor besides Pertwee that would have handled all the crap thrown his way with such a rock solid performance.

oh boy, it's lovely to see all of these very good faith doctor who "critics" in the comment section absolutely attempting to engage genuinely with the show and the context of its development /s. i can't tell if it's more impressive or more pathetic that losers like this are finding themselves on such a small, mildy-toned video, but either way, it's unfortunately not surprising. i can only hope that one day the peple complaining about doctor who going woke grow into their thinking caps, and maybe learn what fun is too. this was a great watch, it's encouraging and refreshing to see such a reasoned and sober appraisal of doctor who's tackling of these issues. i don't really have a good transition into my own thoughts on some of these topics, but you asked for them so here goes! i've seen the fact that Rose Noble is non-binary held up as a contradiction to her own presentation and the way she interfaces with her surroundings being consistent with a binary trans person a couple of times now, first and most notably in Council of Geeks' video on The Star Beast, and while i know that it comes from a place of good intentions, i think that the argument--ironically--treats non-binary expression in a very binary way. non-binary gender isn't its own class of gender entirely divorced from any binary form, and it also isn't not its own class: non-binary describes anything that lies at all outside the stricture of binary categorisation, but that doesn't also mean that there can't be any overlap with binary experiences of gender. the implication that, just because Rose is non-binary, she can't experience or express her gender in ways that are also identifiable with a binary trans experience casts non-binary gender in its own mutually exclusive paradigm: that between binary and non-binary gender experiences, which is similarly reductive to trans experiences as ignoring non-binary identity altogether. it makes sense where this conception comes from: to a lot of people who lie within the gender binary--and even some who don't--their perception of a non-binary experience is similarly codified as is a binary one. it's an all-too-common assumption that non-binary people must prefer they/them, in the same way that the reified category of men prefer he/him, and women prefer she/her. even though it might not be consistent with the quintessential "non-binary experience", Rose's gender is no less non-binary, there's no contradiction here. personally, the fact that the show chooses to represent a dimension of trans experience that is so seldom talked about--that of a non-binary presentation with key overlaps into presentations expected of binary trans women--is incredibly impressive. there was an easy way to write a non-binary character here--by adhering to that reified sense of non-binary--but we still got a character whose gender has nuance in its portrayal. to me, that's the clearest sign that there was real effort put into her writing, and it's personally a shame that just a beautiful choice of character writing happens to be so easily confusable with a misunderstanding of trans experience that is--while i don't think on display here--still disappointingly common. RTD has definitely stumbled when it comes to putting in the legwork with regards to minority representation, but to me this is an example of just the opposite (or, at least, it's easy to read it as such, which is just as good). i respect the choice to deadname Rose for a similar reason. while i would never be so enthusiastic as to suggest that deadnaming was necessary to portray some of the vitriol that trans people are actually subjected to. admittedly, even after months of sitting with the episode i'm still not personally convinced of the praxis of the choice, but i adamantly respect it, and i do think that The Star Beast is a better trans story for including it--at least better than it would be if it cut the scene without replacing it with another similarly visceral experience. the other point i'll make is that for as short as RTD's representation--and in some cases, commentary--has fallen this era, comparing it to the Chibnall era is far too mean in my opinion; RTD is making big leaps and tripping over his own feet, but i don't honestly think Chibnall's era ever managed to make a political statement that wasn't firmly digging its feet into the sand from the beginning.
@MidnightChimey18 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing all your thoughts, especially the complexities around Rose being non-binary, I appreciate that what is presented in the episode isn't necessarily contradictory, honestly it would be great to see more non-binary people represented who use he/him or she/her pronouns etc., I do still wonder though if it would have benefited from Rose's identity being established a little earlier and whether that would have prevented some of the confusion. Glad that it worked so well for you though

The show now has 20% of the viewers as of the peak viewer ship. No one wants this. The show is dead. No need to push anymore as after this season and next per contracts, even Disney will finally say it's bleeding money and has to die. So it will go off the air. And in 10-15 years someone will bring it back and get rid of all the bad changes. Almost like the whole Bobby episodes in Dallas. It will be like none of this happened. Because marketing and money drive such things. No one buys the dolls and merchandise relating to the new show or one under Jodi. So it's all worthless now to people with money.

All excellent points, but the reason most fans hated it is that it's crammed full of divisive, controversial political and religious messaging, which seems to take precedence over storytelling. It's also horrifically sexist and attacks the Doctor himself for being male. The episode also marks the launch of RTD's new venture into changing Doctor Who from a science fiction show into a magical fantasy show where literally anything can happen because there are no rules. This means that when you watch the show now, you're just expected to sit back and watch a series of "amazing things" happening without any need for logical scientific groundwork. Moffat ventured into this shift toward the end of his run, but this new series has taken it to a whole new level. This episode sees the Sonic Screwdriver now treated as a literal magic wand that can physically conjure objects up out of thin air, and more. Overall, RTD's writing in this episode (and series) just comes across as ultra-childish, crass, and lacking any sophistication. Out goes storytelling, character development, and suspense (the bedrock of Doctor Who) and in comes emotionalism, sensation and heavy-handed political activism pushing controversial ideologies that are highly offensive to most of the world. The overt racism of the production team is also highly contemptible.

Finally started watching the New new Who after finishing the binge of Doctors Eccleston through Whittaker, and finally feel able to comment on these episodes with full context. A big motivation for me, going through the whole shebang before seeing this year's Doctor, was knowing they'd have a "Beatles episode". For the expectations I had for "The Devil's Chord", I can't exactly say I'm not disappointed that it didn't feature the Beatles themselves all that much, nor reference their incredibly influential music. They got some screen time, and technically John and Paul did save the day, but it definitely felt lacking in that aspect. I enjoyed Maestro as a character, veeeery camp, veeeery entertaining. I would've liked the episode better and perhaps come in with different expectations if the marketing didn't scream "look look, we're finally doing an episode with the Beatles in it!" Big missed opportunity if you ask me, because Beatles fans like me will be expecting more than what we got.

Love it, agree, though *why* it's a missed opportunity is what I find most compelling. I think the key reason the story isn't about AI is a genre thing - the episode is ostensibly the bridge from Chibnall's buttoned down hard sci fi / hopepunk thing (talk about over-correcting from being the sexy cyber-woman guy) into Davies' science fantasy mode that he always worked best in. Noteworthy that Midnight, as a genre comparison, has no explanation for whatever the googa is that infests the ship - it's just scary and that's fine. The code switch of the Doctor doing the salt line effectively *prevents* the story from being a commentary on large language models because then your story's subject is in one genre and your commentary is about another - it can be done but Davies claims do that sequential thing where he writes the structure first with the emotional stakes then the actual scenes (always attributed to that Davies / Cook on writing but haven't read it so grain of salt there). Also, and this is a whole other dialogue, I never understood the "why is your generation obsessed with social commentary" says the people who spent decades talking about Vietnam and the SSR. I've always suspected it's that they don't recognise/identify with the subject matter being discussed more than anything else and so dismiss it as self-serious and unnecessary. I suspect there's a body of research there beyond what I have from the 60's French philosophers - anyway, just a thought, would love to hear your thoughts on where you feel that attitude is produced from. Anyhow, love the work, keep it up!

I think that you’ve made missed the existential plot point of the season if you’re saying this. If I’m wrong I’m willing to admit it but I think you’ll be surprised. I’m not sure if you’re from the UK, but this is quite obvious to many people I know who are Dr Who veterans. It’s conceptual. The idea that these beings who have come are concepts, and their power is via a concept in the universe, should make it clear.

I was willing to forgive at least the nostalgia of the 60th and felt I was being too critical ... until the "season 1" episodes had the same problems and now im convinced Davies thinks soft fantasy is a get out of jail free card for needing any sense of drama or stakes. That both Space Babies and Devils Chord feature repeat moments of rtd1 verbatim was the quickest way to convince me that when RTD said he wouldnt come back unless it was new ... he was lying. Because if you want all new, the last thing you do is instantly plagiarise yourself. Clearly RTD can’t write science fiction and relies on badly constructed fantasy. He can’t write the Doctor properly and so creates a bi-generated Doctor so he can sexualise and humanise the Doctor for his own pleasure. It’s a stinking mess.
RTD won't try to justify his "fantastical plots" with any in-universe explanation because he doesn't feel the need to, as far as he's concerned the show isn't grounded in realism, and whether you like that or not I feel is quite subjective. I don't mind it for the most part, but the finale didn't work
So...I hear you saying that New Who is President Biden.
RTD and decent writting ...thats like expecting Chibnall to write anything that at least 3 year old would find good.
RTD and dare I say even Chibnall have both proven capable of it on occasion, that's what is frustrating
Derivative sure, but its a business. How do they make a show with low viewership? They had to win back the fans
You win back fans by doing something new and interesting, by having faith in your ideas, not by repeating all the same beats you've done before
RTD and Chibnall weren't part of the Fitzroy Tavern set.
I've come across a few sources (including Verdana's video) that indicate they were part of that circle
@@MidnightChimey I'm afraid those sources were incorrect. RTD was based in Manchester at the time, and I've never seen any proof that Chibnall was part of the Vauxhall Tavern group.
Ok. I was worried you were going to be one of those 'Doctor Who has gone woke' idiots. But I do understand your point.
I seem to attract plenty of them
Same, I hate those. But it wasn't that and I ended up mostly agreeing. It would be great to have some fresh new writers and more of them, even the show-runner, the next show-runner has to be someone new. David Tennant's return and the bigeneration not being explained sucked, like even Capaldi's face was explained in a satisfying way and he only played a character in a single episode previously... Tennant was a whole doctor. The bigeneration seems to be just written in for the sake of Tennant having like a 'happy ending', but there is no in universe explanation of it...
@@Neimit Normally I'm not fixated on every detail being explained but the trouble with Tennant coming back that bothers me is unless you explain it away somehow, it opens the door for any previous actor to just come back at any time, which is not a good direction for the show to go in, it's just not.
I only think RTD ever really bothered about it very much. And now he's unfettered! 😯
He has more confidence, dare I say arrogance, as a writer now I'd say
I ranked space babies below this but I take that back because at Least that episode made sense
Space Babies is fine honestly, just a bit of an anonymous filler episode with some jank effects
@@MidnightChimey tbf if my kids were still under 5 they would have liked it
Empire of Death somehow, impossibly, manages to be a worse finale than The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos. I genuinely didn’t think that was possible.
Honestly I'd probably still put it above Ranskoor Av Kolos, but it is a bit lackluster, particularly with how the Ruby's mum mystery box is tied up
Indeed
@@MidnightChimey Empire is certainly more *watchable* than Ranskoor is, in the sense that it’s not utterly boring and flaccid, but genuinely I’ll take boring over something that feels like it’s actively insulting my intelligence and emotional investment.
@@ThePonderer Good point, albeit emotional investment was a non-factor in the "arcless" Series 11.
Worse than ranmoor? No. It absolutely stands head over shoulders above that abomination.
It's impressive how Pertwee got right into the role, and agree that this season in particular is quite unique in tone and feel, it's more grounded (quite literally) with cooler, more formal relationships between the main leads, but still with moments of warmth, especially between Liz and the Doctor
Nice vlog but why the photo of the area around Crewe station?
I know it's a bit arbitrary, but it's the theme of my channel, I justify it by the fact I write a lot of my scripts while travelling, especially on trains or waiting for trains
@@MidnightChimey I get it!
I find it very amusing that immediately after arguably the best Dalek Story in classic who, we get the worst Cyberman story.
I think Mr Tardis was saying that the drop off in quality is comparable to Caves of Androzani/The Twin Dilemma
I never understood the "picking on the chickens" joke either. When I watched the episode as a kid I thought it was some idiom I didn't know. I guess it was just a bad joke! And yeah, series 7 was a real letdown for me. It felt so plodding, lacking all the tightness and solidity of previous seasons, and I found everything involving Kochanski to be utterly unfunny.
It's not even the fact it's a bad joke, it's the fact it seems so proud of itself, with Rimmer's remark, as if it was meant to be clever
What makes this episode so unique and important is the fact that not only is it the 1st time we see Doctor Who in 'actual' color film, the film itself is 35MM! They made the effort to film this episode with actual movie-quality film, which almost never happens in Doctor Who. Apparently they had an extra few pounds around and decided 'Let's film this episode with movie quality film!' So they notice it more! LOL
Given the whole story is filmed on location it makes it even better
bro really watched Doctor Woke unironically
Yep, good show
A certain “no shit, Sherlock”. Also, Trixie’s villain arc should’ve kept going. Also, Starlight should’ve been a part of Chrysalis and Tirek’s trio of villains.
Absolutely. Moffat destroyed the show for me with obnoxious and solipsistic characterisation, contrived and anticlimactic plotting plus his sheer hypocrisy and ego (proclaiming "Doctor Who is Doctor Who" while spending years turning it into 'Time Traveller's Wife' - it's poetic justice he actual adaptation flopped, 'MCU' and 'Game of Thrones'). This utter hack got to the position he did by marrying Sue Virtue and continues writing his pretentious smug crap apparently secure from any real consequence.
oh boy, it's lovely to see all of these very good faith doctor who "critics" in the comment section absolutely attempting to engage genuinely with the show and the context of its development /s. i can't tell if it's more impressive or more pathetic that losers like this are finding themselves on such a small, mildy-toned video, but either way, it's unfortunately not surprising. i can only hope that one day the peple complaining about doctor who going woke grow into their thinking caps, and maybe learn what fun is too. this was a great watch, it's encouraging and refreshing to see such a reasoned and sober appraisal of doctor who's tackling of these issues. i don't really have a good transition into my own thoughts on some of these topics, but you asked for them so here goes! i've seen the fact that Rose Noble is non-binary held up as a contradiction to her own presentation and the way she interfaces with her surroundings being consistent with a binary trans person a couple of times now, first and most notably in Council of Geeks' video on The Star Beast, and while i know that it comes from a place of good intentions, i think that the argument--ironically--treats non-binary expression in a very binary way. non-binary gender isn't its own class of gender entirely divorced from any binary form, and it also isn't not its own class: non-binary describes anything that lies at all outside the stricture of binary categorisation, but that doesn't also mean that there can't be any overlap with binary experiences of gender. the implication that, just because Rose is non-binary, she can't experience or express her gender in ways that are also identifiable with a binary trans experience casts non-binary gender in its own mutually exclusive paradigm: that between binary and non-binary gender experiences, which is similarly reductive to trans experiences as ignoring non-binary identity altogether. it makes sense where this conception comes from: to a lot of people who lie within the gender binary--and even some who don't--their perception of a non-binary experience is similarly codified as is a binary one. it's an all-too-common assumption that non-binary people must prefer they/them, in the same way that the reified category of men prefer he/him, and women prefer she/her. even though it might not be consistent with the quintessential "non-binary experience", Rose's gender is no less non-binary, there's no contradiction here. personally, the fact that the show chooses to represent a dimension of trans experience that is so seldom talked about--that of a non-binary presentation with key overlaps into presentations expected of binary trans women--is incredibly impressive. there was an easy way to write a non-binary character here--by adhering to that reified sense of non-binary--but we still got a character whose gender has nuance in its portrayal. to me, that's the clearest sign that there was real effort put into her writing, and it's personally a shame that just a beautiful choice of character writing happens to be so easily confusable with a misunderstanding of trans experience that is--while i don't think on display here--still disappointingly common.

The messages in this show killed it....first doctor who...was just telling a story...with no hidden lq whatever....it. Was just entertainmentt
It is still entertainment...
More importantly, Doctor Who has never just been mindless entertainment. Most forms of entertainment like science-fiction have a message and a moral to them.
Viewership is not what it once was, but that's also true across the board really, the way people consume media is changing. Disney wouldn't have put the investment behind Doctor Who in the first place if they really thought the franchise was not viable
@@MidnightChimey ROFLAMO -- Disney lost over $1 Billion on bad films last year. They cut 7,000 workers gutting entire departments in an effort to cut costs by$5 Biilion over the coming years as everything they are touching (streaming, park attendance, merchandise) are all not doing well compared to how they used to do. They are out of touch with their consumer base. And I won't get into the other controversies and lawsuits which are regular news in Florida which does not get reported nationally (but shows they have rocks for brains). Yes they are still profitable but the money making machine of the past is gone, and as more of their properties (like steam boat willie) enter public domain due to how they pissed of certain people and groups continues, they are not showing a company that has financial wisdom.
I absolutely love your stance on the show. Your ability to remain absolutely neutral is brilliant and refreshing. I’ve seen so many videos where people just discuss how they hate this and hate that, but you actually follow through with examples. Great video, definitely going to subscribe and continue watching :)
Thank you :)
Good rundown (from this cis-straight white guy's perspective, anyway!)
Thanks!
As a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I think you did a great job :) I feel the same about it!
Who has found this after Disney’s New Who?
🤦🏻♂️😓 nazis no
Great video, but I disagree with the first ever "I am the Doctor" moment. I still think that was, funnily enough, in The War Machines, the first alien invading story, where the 1st Doctor slowly moves towards the robot whilst the troops retreat behind him and even though no words were spoken then too it really gets 1st Doctor's arc to a climax, he became the Doctor then and there after starting off as an unpolished diamond in "An Unearthly Child".
That is a pretty decent candidate to be honest! Definitely an iconic moment
why’s this getting recommended now…?
The algorithm be weird
The cringy way Donna and Rose II spoke of male Time Lords was the way Time Ladies always talked to the Doctor in Doctor Who.
I know a lot of people have also complained that the actors don't really look like The Beatles, which on its own would probably be a nit-pick, but coupled with everything else, like the fact they disappear for most of the episode only to reappear at the very end to save the day
It works better to view as a single piece rather than the 3 seperate episodes as aired. I don't think that Rimmer in this is the Original Smeghead, hes still out there as Ace. I think this is the Series 8 Rimmer as a hologram but loaded with the memories of the original before he became Ace.
We can speculate lore-wise but that isn't really the point, functionally the result is the same, Rimmer is reset to before series 6 with that character development gone
For me Series 8 didn't need the "Prison subplot". When I watched it on airing I thought. To many cast members here and it's taken away the premiss of the "Last Human Alive". I can only assume at the time Doug was aiming for the Movie and needed the crew to make up the story. What would have been a better storyline would have had them all put into Stasis and somehow Rimmer manages to wipe the crew out again.
That is possible, I know he was very keen on getting the movie off the ground. The prison comedy aspect just seems like something from a totally different show though
I am absolutely not surprised…
Because it's untrue, Rowling didn't deny Naziism (which she researched for Fantastic Beasts), she denied trans ownership of same, just as she does non-binary attempts to redefine binary, seriously, person who menstruates? Nazis were murdering each other in power struggle b4 they knew what trans was, when Dachau was opened in Munich in 1933 it was for priests & gypsies, any non-"Aryan" who was perceived as different & thus a threat. The Final Solution wasn't conceived until years later & during wartime, antisemitism has ALWAYS existed & not in Rowling's books (morons project it onto the films' goblin imagery, more FANTASY creatures).

Right now tied with the visitation for my favourite classic episode
I still need to watch The Visitation
Thanks, I do suspect that a lot of the time with the "don't want to hear about politics" kind of arguments, what people really mean is don't want to hear about politics or social issues that don't apply to you. This idea of not really caring about anything is just a falsehood
No, we don't want them to have special privileges that include biological men in women sports. But you don't actually care about logic, you just want to straw man your opposition.
The last part in the devils cord really turns me off from doctor who. how do you not take that last bit of a moment to reflect of what happened rather than just a musical and the end credits bit silly. Also jinx was far from a great or good villain easily could have but their performance was so over the top it pulled me away from liking her in contrast to the toymaker who legitimately is a scary threat.
It what makes it more jarring was there was a beat where it looked like there was going to be a sombre moment of reflection, right after the Maestro is vanquished, only for it to then go to the musical number. The tone is a bit all over the place
I think that you’ve made missed the existential plot point of the season if you’re saying this. If I’m wrong I’m willing to admit it but I think you’ll be surprised. I am from the UK and know Who and I think that the fact that there was a musical-like moment (especially with the lyrics and one of the actor’s name who is very active this season) actually is supposed to be a clue. I’m not sure if you’re from the UK, but this is quite obvious to many people I know who are Dr Who veterans. It’s conceptual. The idea that these beings who have come are concepts, and their power is via a concept in the universe, should make it clear.
@@shestewa6581 ive been watching doctor who for sometime and i recognize the overarching plot point. the issue i have is RTD back when he did 9 and 10's run there was reflects and character and short of interesting ways in which he had thread everything together. yet in this episode the last bit was out of left field and unearned. this run of doctor really needs to slow down and reflect. this doctor doesn't feel like a man going through space and time and encountering gods and monsters its just feels silly. im interested in seeing what the he who waits is but the journey so far feels like a slog. makes me want to go watch other thing that have peek my interested. then there's the political aspect that has creeped its way into doctor who. make me feel like im being punished for watching. which sucks cause i really love doctor who been a apart of my childhood but the current run and Jodie's run was very punishing to watch.
I agree. By far the most camp. I cringed with embarrasment while watching it, even tho I watched by myself. Imo it was truly dreadful. The bottom of the barrel was scraped so low. I have no problem with representation, but why they couldn't cast a trans actor who could actually act is beyond me
I mean I have seen some people who adore this episode precisely because of how camp it is, so I guess it's pretty subjective. We also had more grounded representation with Rose in The Star Beast for instance, though she did get shafted a little in that story
I really hope RTD has a new spin on the Clara plot, given how much he likes to straight up recycle ideas!
Let's hope so
Fundamentally agree! I actually gave Star Beast a pass for the most part, but WBY set the standard for issues ive had ever since.
It was the one episode so far that really left a positive impression, for the most part
I figured he was only doing the puppet show to bait the doctor into challenging him to a game, But yeah its mostly noise. I have a video on it if you're interested.
I'll have a look later
I was willing to forgive at least the nostalgia of the 60th and felt I was being too critical ... until the "season 1" episodes had the same problems and now im convinced Davies thinks soft fantasy is a get out of jail free card for needing any sense of drama or stakes. That both Space Babies and Devils Chord feature repeat moments of rtd1 verbatim was the quickest way to convince me that when RTD said he wouldnt come back unless it was new ... he was lying. Because if you want all new, the last thing you do is instantly plagiarise yourself. Its also hard to call it Season 1 when it references the 60th and the 60th references season 4 and it cant possibly feel like a fresh break when its a direct continuation of a direct continuation of something that never stopped.
Valid points, but if I was to give the season 1 episodes any credit, Devil's Chord does feel like a tone Doctor Who hasn't really done before, with just how surreal and theatrical the whole thing is
@@MidnightChimey that is true, it does feel fresh and lively, but I'm concerned with it comes a sense of weightlessness. But we'll see I guess, if the mystery boxes pay off maybe it'll make sense in retrospect but if not it may shoot itself in the foot with style over substance. I'd say cautiously optimism but I fear the chibnall era (and stuff like Force Awakens, Wandavision, anything heavy on theatrics and mystery boxes) made me bitter and cynical. I was excited initially, it's just tiring.
Your pronunciation of "premise" is baffling.
What did you think of Wild Blue Yonder, is it the best episode? Could it have been better?
