The Power of the Doctor is Not a Good Finale

Midnight Chimes review of the Power of the Doctor, the centenary special episode which sees Jodie Whittaker regenerate into David Tennant as the 14th Doctor, marking the end of the Chris Chibnall era. Ace, Tegan and UNIT make a return along with the Master as Rasputin.

What did you think of The Power of the Doctor?

The episode was never going to work because you can't ignore its two central problems in that Chibnall wrote it and Whittaker was in the lead role. There's no way to successfully escape those tragic circumstances. It's really a matter of how bad it could be rather than any fantasy of if it could possibly have been good. It was a mess. It was always going to be a mess.

Well I like Whittaker as the Doctor myself and while Chibnall is a flawed writer it's very reductive to just say everything he does is bad with no redeeming qualities

@@MidnightChimey He can do good things and that's very true when he has a co-writer. or everything is pre-thought out on his behalf. In Law and Order: UK, he only had to adapt scripts written by others. In the original Broadchurch his astonishing laziness was put right by a producer willing to write the pages Chibnall wouldn't or couldn't. He's not totally untalented but he's also nowhere near being the full package.

the sacha master is the edgelord master... the ultimate edgelord... he has powerful gremlin energy, which harks back to the delgado master and ainley... i love his master the most, and his performance is infused with such energy, it's amazing. He's like Simm in terms of his energy levels, but idk, maybe Council of Geeks was right... I LOVE how the master plus the cyberiad are such a terrible team because they both feed each other's impulses to make overly elaborate plans.... the cyberiad approves elaborate plans if they logically make sense, and the master just enjoys doing the most needlessly elaborate plans for the hell of it... and combined they come up with the most elaborate plans ever, which effectively dooms them coz they are so complicated. Tegan's use baffled me in this story coz she left the Doctor coz it stopped being fun... and suddenly she is back and furious at the doctor for leaving her... she was acting like she was sarah-jane having a school reunion moment, but, like, that's not what her story was. lol Vinder'a part in this story is wild. He manages to get thru a wormhole, which is supposedly a surprising thing to pull off... and ends up just going back before achieving the rescue that he came there for. Tho i guess if the Doctor appears, u can trust the doccy to sort shit out.

I took it more as that Tegan is frustrated that she never got to have a proper goodbye with the Doctor and they never came back to visit or check on her after she left. Also the ending of Resurrection of the Daleks did seem to imply that she may have had second thoughts and regretted leaving so abruptly while emotions were running high

I wanted Chinbal (intentional misspelling) era to be good I did, this story just lifted plot devices from Big Finish's Zagreus and RTD's Love and Monsters and it is only done to have characters standing around to give exposition rather than an unfolding action within a plot. The Master one of the most morally corrupt and evil villains, he is put in a cell and yet, UNIT with all their experience put him in holding where once he gets out of it the his cell the only thing stopping escaping is a big door with the lock and handle on the inside. As a final story for Jodie Whitaker I found it like all of Chinbals (intentional misspelling) Who over complicated difficult to watch and way too many hang on a second moments, in this regeneration episode the Doctor should have shined, should have shown us that she was doing what is right and the pain that while it wasn't over for this Doctor it kind of is, it will be new eyes that looked out among the stars a new hero to save us and her sadness because to make this happen to do this right she will die, this part of the Doctor is to be no more, then when David Tennant appeared it is really "What".

It does have it's fair share of Chibnall tropes and is a bit over plotted, though I didn't it as bad as some of his other entries in that respect

So Chibnall took old and/or 4th wall ideas and reused/refined/and or did something different and/or better with them. He's not the first scriptwriter to do that. It's innovation. It's easier to spot since everything happens on contemporary Earth as well.

For goodness knows how many times... David returning isn't for fans or cos "thats what they were asking for"... it is because RTD and DT and CT wanted to have one more time having fun making the show when they did the watchalong during lockdown... which though still seemed unlikely and only happened cos Chibs said he didn't want to do the 60th... if he and Jodie had agreed to stay on, then we wud be getting a very different 60th right now. And also as a 60th it's allowed to be indulgent in the past... so far we've seen connections to the RTD1 era, 60s era and the comics... goodness knows what else we don't know yet... and its clear that something has gone wrong with the regeneration... hence the "what what what" (which 13 also used to say a lot too) ... I mean Power of the Doctor was literally fan service too... so the 60th is allowed to be even more so. And RTD isn't a big fan of multi Doctor stories... and rather than bring back 10 cos Tennant clearly doesn't look like that anymore (as gorgeous as he still is...he has aged) he's obviously trying a different type of way to bring Tennant for a short while and probably the last hurrah for him on TV as the Doctor as he's not getting any younger... an actor he's worked with, knows how he works... rather than bringing back another Doctor who he hasn't worked with and getting his mannerism quite wrong (let's not pretend as great as Tennant or Bradley returning under Moff were, he did mess up a little with their characterisations... he got 8 well, but then that was a very short scene...so easier to do, and chibs didn't really define the other Doctors much either, it was the actors themselves that made it feel different...but nothing really in the script you can easily interchange a lot of the dialogue in the edge scenes) So let's wait and see what the specials have in store before deciding that it's a regression.... just cos of a cast choice and the writer who the BBC called back cos chibs didn't want to stay any longer (and funny thing is both RTD and Moff had pushed for their successors... chibs didn't do that for whatever reason) and not having anyone new I think is more of a sign of the lacking of new talent that either the BBC trust in or are willing to come forward... cos as Chibs stated recently... the role of a showrunner doesn't actually exist... no one is trained to do it... the ones who do often take a punt... what RTD did in his first era was nothing like any other show in the UK (hence why there were so many issues behind the scenes cos they were making it up as they went along)... hopefully I do feel that when RTD steps away again he will make sure it goes to safe hands ...hopefully someone that chibs has trained in his new funded project... And let's not start that whole clothes thing again even though RTD explained why he didn't want the media to mock Jodie's clothes....and comparing that to sascha is being disingenuous... cos we know the media and right wing don't care about a villain coded characters wearing what they believe to be women's clothes (and yes it was supposed to be a non-binary costume, but unfortunately having a cis woman actor wear it for a certain length of time it is unfortunately associated with being women's clothes), and secondly Tennant...a cis male... is a bigger name and the next Doctor.... there would be media interest in him wearing 13s clothes than sascha... "14 wearing drag" "is Tennant wearing a bra underneath" blah blah as they did once before in an article where Capaldi mentioned something along the lines of the fact that the Doctor shud wear women's clothes... RTD wud rather do things sensitively and actually get trans actors and non binary actors... and give them representation... Tennant doesn't need to represent those communities when his Doctor is often presenting as a cis male... as well as himself in real life being cis... As for Power... I agree with a lot of the issues and the positive points... though I don't feel it as thematic as u describe...or that the potential themes even connect very well... Jodie definitely deserved more...Sascha was great fun though, and Yas deserved better too. And John Bishop indeed was unable to do the whole ep as he was busy with his tour...

I am trying to be open minded to the new era, as I said I wouldn't have so much of an issue with the Tennant return if it was just a one episode one off thing and something has gone wrong as you say, but RTD has already said something along the lines of "it's not a trick" etc., he is just the 14th Doctor. As for the drag thing, I get the points, it just seems odd he's treading so carefully and humouring right wing media with that, considering he's bringing on trans and drag actors etc. if they do try to make a fuss about it then they're the only ones who would look stupid

It's the closest we'll get to a proper celebration of the show that also feels like a story, even if it's a mixed bag at times. The cybermen element could have been stronger, or longer, but we finally get a followup (underwhelming) to Cyberlords. It needed to be fleshed out. So many ideas are in this story worthy of their own full stories, but all feels quick'n'thrown. The Rasputin storyline in particular is an untapped idea. Chibnall historical elements were the best. Great point re Dhawan vs Simm. And the costume swapping stuff. Great point on Chibnall being fully committed with the characters, as well as underplaying Jodie :(. Again, so many ideas of which all are underdeveloped by necessity of running time. Good counter about listening to fans and nostalgia... What if Dhawan's incarnation is before Simm's?

I'm unsure how much research you did on this story, but the episode was already planned before the BBC asked for a Centenary, and so the Ace and Tegan elements were put in late. Something I think is hard to notice. Also, filming had to be divided up alot to avoid Covid leaks, and so Jodie had to be away from most of the actors for her protection. That said, I can agree Jodie has underserved. it's more an end to 1980's than to 2022

Well to each their own. I think it was a brilliant finale and a true love letter to Doctor Who: it's the equivalent to an anniversary special but I don't think it took anything away from 13, she still got to shine and Yaz also did a lot in this episode. It ended the era with a bang and I think that's what matters!

The love letter to Doctor Who aspect I do get, just think more focus could have been on Whittaker as the finale to her era. It's kind of like the episode wanted to be too many things at once
