Trans Inclusion in Sports: A Complex Subject

Midnight Chimes Train of Thought video essay discussing the deceptively complex subject of trans athletes and fairness in sport in light of the recent decision by FINA to ban transgender women from competing with other women in elite swimming and aquatic sports, a move which has been praised by many including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies #transrights #trans #sports

It is complex. And really not something I want to have an opinion on seeing as it doesn't affect me being neither particularly sporty nor gender involved in any of the heated parties in this discussion. However - the one bit of the argument I really lean away from you is that the only strong conclusion you seem to be pointing towards is gendering sports in the first place was problematic. IE. There's an inference, you don't say it but you do lead up to the conclusion - that for the majority of amateur (or even most professional) sports we shouldn't be segregating by sex at all. And that... conclusion would be deeply problematic on so many levels that reach so far beyond any other aspect of society brought into this discussion. I'd really point at male / female segregation in sports comes from far more than just historical hang ups. There are deep societal issues that drive this coming from several angles which are very present and driving. Even more when you consider this on an international stage. If the solution to make it more inclusive for trans athletes is to dismantle that then there is going to be a lot of problems and the debate will certainly become far more toxic in the future - which I would hate to see. Either way - though I can't agree on that conclusion always found your trains of thought quite interesting and good to see you branching beyond our shared interest in retro Sci fi television series.

Thanks, yeah I don't think it would be reasonable for the gender/sex segregation to be dismantled overnight and as I say, there is no easy quick fix solution. The point is more that segregation of sport is not simply a matter of fairness, as it is so often framed, and it's something that should be addressed in the discourse

It's simple, would you allow a 20 years old to participate in the sub-16 category? If the answer is "no", why are you allowing a man in the female category?

It's a word that I think gets abused a bit, but I appreciated the nuance in this. Nice to avoid binary yes/no arguments with these subjects; and really in general

Sports are separated by sex, not gender. And generally the male category is open to anyone. There is no debate

@@MidnightChimey I did, but I believe you failed in the making the point that “trans inclusion is a complex subject”. The category of women sports was created to give women a safe and fair way to compete in sport. if women want to compete with men, they are usually allowed to. This gives everyone an opportunity to compete. It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.

@@albertfralinger2711 You don't seem to actually be responding to the points I made, in fact I'm not sure what point you are even making. I'm assuming from your opening comment you think that trans people shouldn't be allowed to compete as the gender they identify? Why is that and how is that fair?

@@MidnightChimey I don’t think people should compete in whatever gender they identify in because sports is separated by biological sex, not gender. It’s as simple as that. There are plenty of aspects that make all sports not equal for all people, but that’s how life works. Trans people can still compete in whatever sport they want as long as they follow the rules

@@albertfralinger2711 Saying sports should be separated by biological sex is just a different way of saying trans people shouldn't be able to compete as their gender, and I'm asking why? If the answer is that trans women have an unfair advantage, well as I said in the video that is not necessarily true depending on the sport in question, how far along in their transition they are etc. and even if it is true, how is it really any different to other biological differences between athletes of the same gender such as height, weight, having long legs etc.
