Ozma is still probably my favorite Melvins album, and an absolute classic. I don't think you've emphasized how convoluted Ozma's (and Gluey's) songs are; these strange sluggish punk tunes with left-field turns, dissonant chords, unusual time signatures - maybe the closest that the Melvins came to jazz rock, but still in the format of brief 1-2 minute songs. Just these little enigmatic blobs of disjointed riffs that came out of nowhere. Do you have an idea of how this impetus came to be, for the Melvins to start writing more abstract and technically demanding music like that?

I've always thought that Chief Ten Beers was a parody of Chief Ten Bears, featured in Dances With Wolves. And this should be obvious, but thanks for making the Deutrom era of (the) Melvins possible. Peak period of the peak band.

Very enjoyable and informative video Mark. I'm a Bay Area guy. RKL was a favorite so the first Alchemy release I bought was R'N'R Nightmare - saw the comic and thought Alchemy rules!! As a result I started buying all your release and this album was my introduction to Poison Idea, thought it had quite a metal edge. Was blown away first time hearing Pick Your King! Still have my original Melvins, RKL, Sacrilege, Clown Alley and a crazy Clown Alley/Rythym Pigs flyer from On Broadway with the jack in the box killer clown. BTW David Duran hell of a vocalist, he was great with Hemi!

I would say, for the understood sound of sludge metal - it's definitely Lori. There were others, though I'd be stretching the term - Sean Yseault's work on those noise rock White Zombie albums, particularly Soul Crusher, is pretty heavy and sludgy. Mick from Kousokuya is another - her playing on DEATH TRIP NIGHT, from 1982, is heavy and doomy, though 1. Who knew these guys in '82, barely anyone knows them now and 2. As heavy and doomy as they get, it's a lot closer to no wave than sludge metal. Still, if anyone didn't know these, you should check them out, because they are *really good*. Love this video, subbed to the channel. Saw you with Melvins a few times bitd - I loved your characters (the Mod being my fave). Had an "interaction" that wasn't great, but I chalk it up to the time - which wasn't great. This video is beyond informative and gets into real biographical detail which I find very compelling and, honestly, can't wait to watch more! Pardon the ramble!

  • @MarkDeutrom

Thanks for the suggestions. I will use the interwebs to investigate. RE interaction : it's pure luck if you have a "good one" ....people forget that what is a recreational situation for them is a working situation for someone else. I've tried my best to be accessible and polite but I'm only human...thanks for your thoughts and for watching !

@@MarkDeutromWhite Zombie: in their early days, they were a kinda Pussy Galore/Birthday Party/Black Sabbath/Blue Cheer hybrid who were pretty amazing. Bassist Sean wrote all that material out in tablature, which, for a noise rock band, is both impressive and baffling! Not at all the band that Beavis and Butthead broke "Interaction" Yeah, I totally get that - and it was a particularly bad night; Portland, Maine IIRC it was the day after Cobain died? The show was a rough one, all around just nervous energy. Were I older, I would have kept my distance - but I was a kid and you guys were my favorite band, so I just didn't have that sense. I definitely don't hold it against you (but, y'know, I'm glad we talked about it!)

Montecito has been an enclave for the rich since the beginning of the 20th century. There's a lady named Pearl Chase (Heir to Chase Manhattan Bank) that kind of created the culture around that. She was so wealthy that when Santa Barbara had an earthquake and fire in 1925, she paid to rebuild the city out of her own pocket. I grew up in SB with those guys and believe me it has been a very wealthy neighborhood for as long as anybody's been alive on this planet.

We did some artwork of the Melvins dressed up as KISS to to give to the band (Buzz was a mix of Gene & Paul’s characters, Mark was a mix of Ace and Vinnie Vincent’s characters and Dale obviously was a mix of Peter and Eric Carr’s personas). We could’ve cared less about White Zombie, but after the show in Winston Salem, NC we were at a gas station and lo and behold, in pulls the WZ tour bus and Rob steps off the bus. We never got to meet the Melvins so we thought this was a perfect opportunity to pass out artwork on to the Melvins. Rob gave my brother and I the weirdest look when we walked up to him and weren’t in the least bit interested in him and asked if he could pass our caricatures along lol Have a feeling those drawings never made their way to the Melvins lol

It takes a lot of courage to get on KZread and talk about these kind of sensitive subjects Mark. This is coming from someone who has been uploading videos to KZread for many years. One of the challenges, and something I still struggle with, is you don't always know how people are receiving the message. The part about KZread that I find most uncomfortable is the feeling of talking into a two way mirror. After uploading hundreds of videos, I'm still not comfortable with it. Its a discomfort I suppose I learn to live with in order to do KZread. I wanted to say I appreciate your videos very much including this one.

  • @MarkDeutrom

Thanks for your thoughts and also for watching. Like you, I'm not entirely comfortable with doing this...I see it as a way to challenge myself by getting out of my comfort zone, and also benefit from a kind of vicarious therapy. The whole process is interesting and also a way to share my perspective on my journey with music as well as some other things I find important to talk about. It's weird to think of having your own TV channel, but that's where we are...Overall it's been a really positive experience and feedback like yours is an example of that. Thank you !
