Ask me anything about the 1996 Melvins Singles 1-12

Музыка

In 1996 the Melvins released one single a month for the whole year. Ask me anything about this sequence of singles or the collection that was eventually released on CD. Looking forward to your comments and questions !

“Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings” opened the door to ZZ Top for me back in ‘97. Only knew them from “Legs”. “Fandango!“ is amazing and still a regular listen for me after all these years. I love the reference on the “Alive At The F*cker Club” album too. What led Melvins to record a cover of “Nasty Dogs”?

Was Specimen fully conceived before it made it into set lists, or did it form more organically through live improvisation?

I have a couple of questions if it's not too much of a hassle. Is there a reason GGIIBBYY is named after Gibby Haynes? There's a lot of noise remixes/combined songs on the singles, and I've always wondered if the noise tracks the Melvins did were done seriously or as a joke. Seeing as there's a Clown Alley cover on this album, I'd be interested to hear more about that band since I don't know much about them besides the obvious member overlap. Were any of the songs recorded specifically for the singles or were they all outtakes and such? Also, not a question, but for years I thought the cover of Lexicon Devil on this album was the original version of the song and the Germs version was a cover. No idea why I thought that looking back, but It's still kinda funny to me that I always think of the Melvins cover first for that song and not the Germs version because of it.

It seems like the everything and the kitchen sink we're thrown at this collection. Recordings from the 1983 lineup, Brutal Truth covering a song, Melvins covering tons of other bands including Clown Alley, Live tracks, studio fuckery, - is there anything that you wish would have made it, or anything that you know of that was considered but left off?

if I remember right; there’s only one other featured artist which is Brutal Truth’s cover of Zodiac. why have a cover band at all? why not more? and also Zodiac is my favorite Melvins song played live, the high pitched noise at the bend now and back in the day is like- the greatest sound ever made from a guitar. so, thanks for playing bass on that song live!

The "Jacksonville" song.... i remember hearing that in Peoria when you opened for Rob Zombie. What's the story with "we hate your all and want your to die!"? I gotta say, i was in high school and so stoked to see you guys, but that song... i hate that song lol

I wanted to ask about "HDYF" with IMA and credited Yoko Ono as a guest. The story on that track has a lot of conflicting info. Also I learned Melvins did a set with Yoko Ono as a guest in 97 and I gotta ask about that. Cheers.

"Jacksonville" b/w "Dallas" - I love it when the Melvins make the audience PAY. These two tracks are great examples of the Melvins giving the audience what they deserve. How did it feel when you went into this zone? What kind of emotions were felt? What kinds of thoughts were going on?

I replied to a comment, in the FB group, about the newest song saying the Melvins never disappoint. Some replied that he saw The Melvins when they opened for Zombie. In Jacksonville. He's still butthurt about this song.

Were there any particular britpop bands that drew the ire of Melvins enough to be the inspiration for “In the Rain”?

How did the Brutal Truth cover of Zodiac come about? Had you played shows with the band prior to or after? And do you have any memories of those experiences with or through knowing the band?

thanks for clearing things up regarding the cover artwork, i always felt weirdly about it so that's a breath of relief regarding the hilarious 'in the rain', is it the usual members on the same instruments? could never tell who was singing there

Questions for Singles 1-6: Who plays/sings/writes what on "In the Rain"? Were the A&R mixes some form of malicious compliance? Were there misgivings or discussion about releasing just alternate live takes of album tracks as singles ("Leeech", "It's Shoved")? Did you play on "GGIIBBYY" - or perhaps I should ask which of these tracks did you NOT perform/produce on?

Questions for Singles 7-12: Were "Jacksonville" or "Dallas" already familiar jams - if they hadn't been released here is it possible they would have become studio Melvins songs? Was the ZZ Top cover ever played anywhere else (would really love an updated Mark D solo rendition of this tune)? Were "How"" and "Harry Lauders" originally part of the same track? What do you remember about the Kramer session? Yoko/IMA session?

"Poison" - Is this just the Melvins doing a mix of this Wayne Kramer tune? Or are the Melvins actually backing Wayne Kramer?

Specimen is one of my favorites and would like to know anything about it. The liner notes say recorded for Stag last minute, and I’ve long wondered why it didn’t make it onto Stag, or even Honky. The 95 shows are the earliest recordings I’ve found. How do you feel about that tune? Thanks Mark, big fan of your work.

W00t w00t! Unfortunately l don't remember much about those singles even though l have a few of the originals and l have the CD. l still have the original shirt with the cover of the CD on the front. So, l suppose l don't really have any questions about those singles but l did want to ask you this: How do you feel about most of the original Melvins shirts selling for so much money now? Some of those shirts sell for $1,000 plus. Don't you wish you would have "borrowed" a few boxes from one of the many tours you were on back then (wink, wink)?

@@MarkDeutrom I personally loved and still love Pulp und Blur, and they definitely were Britpop. Why Oasis got so big is personally beyond me. Such an average band, leaning to the boring side, kinda band, in my opinion.
