If you’re looking for tips and advice on how you travel the world longer, relocate to Europe, embrace van life without spending tens of thousands of dollars, or plan for your first (or 50th!) Camino de Santiago - you’ve come to the right place.
We started Days We Spend with a simple goal - to share how we spend our time while traveling the world. Then a funny thing happened.
You guys started following along. And you had some questions.
In 2021, we turned our Honda Element into a micro RV. We've walked across Spain multiple times, traveled around the world for a year, and in 2023 we made the leap to move to Spain full-time on an Non-Lucrative Visa.

It's $2,500/month in rent just for a 1 bedroom apartment in Miami. I have 3 friends from Miami who all moved to Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Marbella) and have said that they spend less on groceries for the month than they used to spend per week here in Miami. 700€ for insurance for two people - for the whole year??? 😳
It's €700 each for the whole year. So about €60 per month each.
Wow! This is an excellent video! As a mountaineer who constantly re-evaluate everything I bring with spreadsheet of each item's weight, I found some helpful tips!
Thanks so much. I'm glad it was helpful. Do you have any pant recommendations that weigh less than 250g?
Hi, is it OK to download all those programs beforehand like the autofirma software? Thanks. BTW, very informative video. You've got my sub.🌻🌺🌷
We used to put crackers or bread in our bowl of coffee as a kid when I was in Italy and France. Did you book your gites ahead of time? Doing the camino Frances in Spain, I didn't have to book anything, but I was told you had to book ahead for the Camino de Puy. Can you tell me?
That is such a quaint and charming town. I was there in April as well before they had a year round calendar and mass tourism. The Cau Ferat is one of my fave museums in Spain as well. We spend a few days in Sitges and stayed at a beach front hotel for €30/night which I negotiated it down to €20 bc I said that their water was too hard and my shower gel was not foaming properly, (the nerve, right?). One of those night there was a storm on the Mediterranean, so the day we went to the Museum and the palace, the waves were so large that they were breaking all the way up to the windows. Unforgettable.
Hi! :) I’m currently in Barcelona but it’s impossible to get an appointment for the nie here; can I get an appointment in another province like girona or Valencia for example even if my domicilio is in Barcelona ? Thanks
What about income Taxes? That's definitely a major expense.
Love your build! Easy, adjustable, affordable. Checks all the boxes! Do have a question...what about your spare tire? I've watched a couple other Element builds and there's been no spare tire mention.
Thanks! Yeah that was the plan. It actually was super easy and cheap to build. The spare tire on the element is under the panel in the back. It’s a little tire shaped cubby. So to get at it you have to move the benches which isn’t the deal but it’s there when you need it.
Can anyone recommend the best way to pre-purchase train tickets from Barcelona to San Sebastian. There are so many websites and I'm not sure if all are legit. I appreciate any help you can give. Thank you.
We don't recommend taking the train from Barcelona to San Sebastian. There isn't a direct route and it requires many transfers. We suggest flying into Irun/San Sebastián or Bilbao. Or, take the bus (you can book directly through the Monbus website).
You guys are great, but you really should have edited the video to include the total cost at the end. It wouldn't have been that much effort. I didn't notice the comment you pinned about the total cost until after I used a calculator to add up all of the costs myself. Just a little constructive criticism.
Thanks for the tip Sam. We honestly didn’t want to include the total because not everyone is going to live like we do. We travel a ton, for example, which could throw off someone else’s expectations. Thanks for watching and letting us know.
Sir, what hat do you wear? The black ball cap one.
It's from Sunday Afternoons - amzn.to/3Mstvt5. It's currently unavailable but this company has many great styles and they are built to last.
@@DaysWeSpend thanks, I checked their website as well. No joy, but I’ll keep an eye out.
This is a great idea guys!! Love it !🌻🌺🌹
Thank you!
Love the embroidered shirt and flower in your hair, Lainey!
Thank you! The shirt is from the 1940s
Don't forget Sitges has great Gay Pride events also the worlds oldest know gay community beach dating back to the 1930s. such a loving inclusive town. Glad you love it also.
Very true! There's a wonderful community there.
KEEP SMILING... BUT WHY...?
Sitges is also famous in Spain for its fantastic film festival that is celebrated in the month of October.
That sounds awesome. Definitely too many fun events here to see.
Hi Lainey, Debbie from New Zealand again. Backpack arrived super quick. It’s perfect! Also wondering how the silk sock liners work with quarter length socks. Do they come up above the socks? Would it be better to get crew length socks? Thanks Lainey, Debbie
That's great to hear. I hope the bag works out for you. I like my sock liners taller than my socks. That way, I can pull them up on chilly mornings and roll them down in the afternoon.
As a holder of the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa, you are classified as a tax resident after spending more than 183 days per year in the country. This status implies that you are subject to Spanish taxes on your worldwide income. The tax rate for income, including pensions, starts at 19% for EU residents and 24% for non-EU residents. Tax rates may vary for other forms of income. Key points: Tax residency: More than 183 days in Spain per year. Income tax: Starting at 19% for EU, 24% for non-EU. Capital gains: A minimum of 19% on worldwide income. You must file an annual tax return if you meet the tax residency criteria. You may also be liable for wealth tax, depending on your assets and the specific autonomous community where you reside. NOT ATTRACTIVE.
Thanks for sharing this data. We always recommend talking with a wealth advisor or tax professional before deciding to move to a new country.
Nothing on a person from the US and Spanish taxes. I suspect that tax rates are very high....40% or so....how is that an advantage? Without knowing the tax rules, nothing else is important.
There are tax treaties so that you are not paying double tax. Yes, the taxes are higher in Spain but if you do not want to pay the taxes, then there are other places to live.
There seems to be an endless amount of cool towns in Spain. Gracias!
There really is!
¡Dios mío! I gained about 5 kilos just watching y’all chow down. As for the waves, yeah, small, but some lefts for us goofyfooters. Will have to get wet just to work off some of those tapas, empanadas and Ibérico jamón sammies! Thanks for the invite. Your videos just keep getting better n better!
HAHAHA. There's so many good eats there, that's for sure. Thanks so much for the lovely comment.
Great content!
Thank you!
Those museums look really interesting!
We loved them!
Love
I was just wondering if we were ever going to see you dance again.😊
:)
Hi Lainey, hi Shawn:)! Just to start off, I love your videos and you guys are so fun to watch: you are always so friendly and funny, totally cute! I have what is probably a somewhat infrequently asked question. Like Lainey, I like to plan and my partner and I would also like to walk the Via Frances next year (hopefully). We already have our pilgrim gear together 😂🙈 and can't wait. Well, merino wool should really only be washed with wool detergent and I wonder all the time how to do that on a pilgrimage - at best with a bar of soap for everything. You don't want to destroy your expensive merino garments. How do you wash your merino underwear and clothes in general by hand and by machine when going on a pilgrimage? 🤔🫣🤭😅 Thank you very much in advance and best regards from Germany, Julia ❤ Ps: Yes, I know, my question is very German 😅🤷🏼♀️🫣
Thanks so much. For our wool, we always wash it cold (unless we've had bedbug issues, then it gets washed hot), and air dry. We use mild detergent when possible. At home, we use a natural detergent and on the camino we use a bar of Dr Bronner's castile soap. We don't use wool specific detergent. We hand wash on the camino (usually) and wash in the laundry on the hand wash cycle. We've never had issues doing things this way and most of our merino stuff lasts for many years. :)
@@DaysWeSpend Thank you so much 😍😍
My people go there for a different reason. 🌈
Haha it’s the best.
Glad to see you guys are enjoying life in Spain. The town looks wonderful thanks for the tour.
Thanks so much!
you are geniuses
Thank you!
WOW Fantastic video, I just added Sitges to the Beach Town list, my fiancee loves the beach and it was the only way I could convince her to move to Spain or Italy was if we lived on the beach.
Thank you so much! There are many beautiful beach towns in Spain :)
This video is so well-made, must have taken a ton of effort. Thank you for sharing your beautiful journey 🎶✨💕
Thank you so much! 😊
Great to see you guys out there! Have you guys been to Dali’s place? After my Camino, I plan to go there in October. 🥃
We haven’t been to Dali’s place. Next time! Let us know how you like it.
Heads up! There isn’t just one “Dali’s place” but three near, but not in Barcelona: in Figueres, Portlligat near Cadaqués and Púbol. Enjoy your October trip!
My daughters and I spent three days in Sitges after our first Camino. They would go to the beach and I went to the museums all day. I could not believe how close some of the art was to me as I walked around!
That’s awesome! There’s something for everyone there.
That’s a great video, there’s some good tips here that even as a male you can use, the merino wool pieces are a good insight would never have looked at that before. I’ve downloaded your packing list and visited the sites I can use, there are men’s sections and if I can’t get the actual items here in the U.K. there will be alternatives. Particularly impressed with the merino hoodie but the rest is just as good. I’m a hopeless overpacker! you’ve sorted me out on that one. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Good luck with your packing. Buen Camino!
Absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing your adventure. Guys I recommended you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak.add this sound in your bucket list.
Thanks for the recommendation!
What size hoodie did you get? Not sure if I should get a medium or large
I have a size small. I’m 5’1”
I hope to do the Camino for the first time before I turn 75… is that too adventurous? Too old for the first time?
It’s never too late to walk the Camino. You’ve got this! Buen camino.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips! We are exploring going sept/oct ‘24 and appreciate all the knowledge imparted from experienced pilgrims. I appreciate the long sleeve reviews because I’m also a fan of them. I discovered bamboo wear and love it and was curious about the merino wool ones.
You’re welcome. Buen Camino!
Thank you for your information how can someone get working permit visa someone from Nigeria that have family lives in Spain
Looks like you made the correct decision there! Here is to the next attempt...Buen Camino 👣
Thanks! We’re looking forward to the next time.
Great job! Not a failure, just an adventure
So true!
Inspiring. Can I get my TIE in a different province than the one on my application? I've changed where I want to live.
Thank you. We think that’s not a problem. As long as you get an empadronamiento that is recent. That will prove you live elsewhere.
Do i need to workout and stay fit before my Camino hike?
You don't need to, but it helps to ready your body for walking long distances. If you do not walk regularly, we suggest starting the first week with shorter distances (12-18 km per day).
Next time, you will do it. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, we will! Thanks for watching.
This video was awesome. Informative and fun!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for sharing this! This is for sure much easier and love all of these great ideas!!!!
Thank you!
One sort of wonders--after 6 minutes of viewing--if the purpose of the video is to present the city or if it's simply a showcase for the two hosts to be "cute." ('Sorry. I have a penchant for honesty.)
You guys look so happy! Love it! ❤
Thank you!
I came europe with schengen visit visa in netherland may I apply my income more then 3K a months. now I am living portugal I don't have trc only have my country passport?
