How to Order a Beer in Galicia, Spain
Ordering a beer in Spain isn’t as simple as asking for "una cerveza, por favor." Because every region in Spain not only has its own favorite local beer, but several different words that relate to the size of the beer.
We're to help you confidently order the size of beer you want so you can enjoy the Spanish way of life. Please drink responsibly!

Great video guys 😃Being from Madrid it was shocking when I asked for a “doble” outside of Madrid and bartender went “Que?” 😂For anyone who might come to Madrid our beer lingo is a bit different. Caña = short/corto 150ml-200ml Doble = a double caña, so normally 300ml Tercio = 1/3 of a 1L. A 330ml bottled beer. Very commonly asked Botellín = same as the video Jarra = same as the vido

You guys are hilarious 😂! Love how silly you two can be and it definitely shows how much you two love living in Spain. I didn’t drink too much beer while in Spain so wondering how’s the IPA scene in Galicia?
@DaysWeSpend
3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! There are some IPAs but those are usually found at craft beer places (there are a few in our city). You can always try asking for one but you would have to say "eee-pah" instead of "eye pee ay"
Also in Galicia and in Catalunya the tercio is called mediana.
haha, that was a refreshing video 😁 Thanks god you were reviewing how to order a beer and not a gin and tonic, I don't know how it could have ended! I've been following your first hiking videos, so good to see you're enjoying life in Spain!

Cute! Luv beer 😊 I had an Amstel Radler on tap, I didn't notice them pouring anything in the glass beforehand? I'll have to watch more carefully I thought it was just a lemon flavored brew 🤔🙃

Thanks! The Radler on tap is a regular Radler beer (no added lemonade by the bartender). Definitely try the clara next time and compare it to the Radler.

Great to know, thank you!! Please do a video on the weather in Galicia. I'll be there in mid-May and am struggling to know what to bring. I know I'll have to bring layers, but it doesn't look that cold for February with the light jackets you both are wearing. We'll be all over in Galicia (A Coruna, Ourense, Ribeira Sacra, Vigo) and also heading to Asturias as well.

Sounds like an amazing trip! The weather is very variable in Galicia and Asturias. Bring layers and expect some rain. When the sun is out, it gets very warm. We're having a very unseasonably warm January/February right now.
Qué graciosa! Ive lived in North Spain for 4 months now and not had a beer yet but there will be time for that when i have family and friends over to visit me. Until then, ill be dreaming spanish. In Zaragoza (Aragón) is common to ask for a "penalty" when you want a "short". Also, when you want a bottle of a specific brand, you just say that brand or a specific mark, as in "¡Una AMBAR! " or "¡Ponme una EXPORT". If they had no tap for those brands, they understand you want a bottle instead. Very fun video, btw.

Are the drinking and driving laws serious? Maybe that's why the prevalence of non alc beer. Amazing how much Spain has changed since I was a kid and my parents lived there, under Franco. A poor country then. Or read "As I walked out one summer morning" by Laurie Lee, to see what it was like in the 1930s. Great book!
@DaysWeSpend

The laws are very serious about that. Our friends have told us that there are lots of cops on the roads on weekends ready to pull people over for breathalyzers. Thanks for the book recommendation! We'll check it out.
Lol...how trashed did you guys get making this enjoyable and informative video? To your list of Spain's intractable beer sizing standards, I will add the "doble Amstel" - size glass that one finds in the Museo del Jamón in Madrid. Un saludo!

I’m curious how people could work in Spain without speaking Spanish very well. Are there places with more English speakers? Does that only leave remote work on the table? My Spanish is pretty good but my girlfriend really struggles. I’m trying to sell her on the concept of moving to Spain-hopefully Galicia or Bilbao (someday)
@DaysWeSpend
3 ай бұрын
Most people come here hoping to learn Spanish. Larger cities with more tourism have a lot more English than rural or less popular places. Both Galicia and Bilbao don't have much English. And locals really appreciate the effort to speak Spanish.

hi Shawn and Lainey (hope I got your names right)... this was definitely a fun watch! I walked the Camino Frances twice, usually had food with some wine (of course!) but when ordering a beer, I always got a big one with handle, but can't recall saying 'double' or 'jarra' - they probably just know, that pilgrims are very thirsty (unless they specify otherwise)!! 😆🍺 Musing on this, I just wondered about olives... can you order in a bar different kinds of them, or will you just always get a standard variety... I remember getting them as 'free tapas', when ordering a drink, but I think it was always the same kind... whats your experience? 🫒
@DaysWeSpend
3 ай бұрын
yup, that's right! Glad you enjoyed the video. You can always order olives in a bar by asking "aceitunas, porfa." You'll get whatever the bar has. We've never seen bars offer different types of olives. Some bars will bring you olives as part of the free tapa, but not all of them.
