Women's Camino de Santiago Packing List: Camino Frances (ULTRALIGHT)

The only packing list you’ll ever need! This is my second time walking the Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela. I walked this as part of a long Camino from Le Puy-en-Velay. We walked the Camino Francés section in September 2023.
Here's a complete list of gear I brought in my 24 liter backpack, what I would change for different seasons, and how I only brought what I needed. Your walk can be so much more pleasant, carrying only what you need. A lighter bag is a happier peregrina!
Gold stars if you can count how many times I say “merino wool.”
We spent 26 days completing our Camino journey. This is my fifth Camino; I have walked all of them with an ultralight pack.

    Hello! Love your video and your suggested packing style ❤ I have a couple questions.. 1. Does the Ridge Merino Wool hooded top shrink at all in the wash? 2. Did you find yourself needing a head lamp or any kind of light? I saw some other people's videos that had them for the early morning starts but you didn't mention any in your video so figured I'd get your thoughts on that. Thanks, Mary

  • @DaysWeSpend

    @DaysWeSpend

    @@makamite876 Hi Mary, those are great questions. I always wash my wool in cold water and never put it in the dryer, so I've never had shrinkage. The few times I have washed hot (for bed bugs), I didn't have issues but I did NOT put it in the dryer. I didn't use a headlamp since I have my phone for a light when needed. I don't like walking in the dark for more than a few minutes, so it's not an issue for me. The few times we had to walk in the dark for a heatwave, I put my phone in my waist pack and it worked great as a makeshift light.

    @@DaysWeSpendthanks for the reviews, I am leaving with my daughter for the Camino ingles is a month, she is 13 but taller than me, I am a tiny 5 feet person. So I appreciate your comment on the backpack and size. Since it’s quite an expense buying two backpacks, I wanted to understand what is the difference between the pro and the regular backpack, it’s just about the fabric, do you know? I read they have the same technology and waterproof, thinking of going for the cheaper non pro version. Thanks

  • @DaysWeSpend

    @DaysWeSpend

    8 күн бұрын

    @@Franciuk I think the difference is just the fabric. The pro version fabric is more durable but that's not necessary on the Camino since you aren't scrambling through brambles. If you get them, let me know how you like them.

    Sun hoodies and Merino wool are both amazing, but I've had the same experience wearing a Merino wool sun hoodie. I've since switched to synthetic because it dries quicker, breathes better, and lasts longer. Currently I use the OR Echo (by far the most popular one out there) for most trips and the REI Sahara Shade which is a bit thicker (SP50 compared to SPF15-20 for the Echo) and I like better for colder trips. Topo Ultraventure is the perfect Camino shoe. I did my first two Caminos in more minimalist shoes, but I found that for road walks and cobblestones they killed my feet. The Ultraventure works great on both trail and road, and has a lot more cushion. Also, I wanted to let you know that thanks to your old gear list I got the same hat you did and it's been amazing through ~1000 miles of hiking on the PCT and Camino del Norte.

    Sunday Afternoon hats FTW! That one has been on three Caminos with me. It's still going strong! Thanks for your recommendations. I'm definitely going too look into them. The footbox of the Topos look like they would fit my foot shape better, too. So I'm not the only one with the hoodie issue! Funny thing, I always hike in a Merino wool t-shirt and I've never had that issue with them. Maybe the sun hoodie versions are more fragile?

We said that a lot in our videos! 🙏🏼 Questions: How much water did you carry on the Le Puy? Did the Gites in France use WhatsApp? Did you find hiking poles in Le Puy? Could you find ATM's regularly? Great video! We can't wait to get on the Camino again. ❤

    Thanks so much! Good point about the bag clips. I'm a B cup, so it works for me. There are some diagrams on the website suggesting to put the buckle under your bust if you are larger chested. I haven't seen anyone else wear this bag, so I'm not sure what that feels/looks like. On Le Puy, I often carried 2 L. I drink a lot of water and it was August. Gites in France rarely used Whatsapp. We had to make phone call for those reservations. They also use email, but the response time is often too slow to use email while on the trail. It's possible to find hiking poles in Le Puy, but you have to time your arrival for stores to be open. We arrived on a Sunday and the pilgrim hiking store is closed Sundays and Mondays. Tons of ATMs. No issues with that! Great questions!

    I am seriously looking at the 30L version of the same backpack you have Planing to split a super lightweight tent 🏕️ with hubby (x OB instructors) I have 58Lit Osprey Eja now. Only weights 2.11lbs and more room for sure that I don’t need on this Hike/Camino. Any suggestions? I know it’s bigger but I like that you don’t have to put a rain cover on your backpack 🎒. Did you really like everything about it ? May purchase very soon Thanks

    We also have the 30L version and it fits the same as the 24L version. I really do like everything about it except, I wish it was a bit lighter weight. However, lighter weight backbacks don't fit me since they're made for people with longer torsos.

    Great video. FYI- if you wear deodorant, you’ll wear out the merino wool armpit faster than otherwise. That said, I still wear out armpits on merino shirts. There’s a cottage company, Vaucluse , that makes a lightweight spacer that goes between you and your frameless backpack to allow ventilation. So no more soaking wet back. Saves wear on the clothes and stink on the backpack. The concept seems to defeat the purpose of a frameless pack… but quite the opposite. It makes the frameless pack more comfortable and with negligible weight. Merino is great…but try alpaca! I gave up with merino underwear. Wears out too fast. Back to synthetics. Lightweight and dries fast and a protective barrier for when I use alpaca leggings on colder days.

  • @DaysWeSpend

    Thank you! I haven't had problems with the armpits wearing out in other shirts, this one is just particularly fragile. Thanks for the recommendation for Vaucluse. I'm definitely going to check them out. Also want to check out some alpaca clothing! By far the most sturdy merino underwear I've ever worn is by Branwyn. It's definitely worth trying them if you like merino. Thanks for all your lovely recommendations.

    Never use the shoes you use for any walking (town or trail) in the shower. If you think you need shower shoes bring a pair just for that purpose. The shoes you walk in have lots of bacteria on them that you’re bringing into the shower and can cause infections in the people showering after you especially if they have any broken skin on their feet. I never wore anything on my feet in the shower and had no problems.

    I love those Xero sandles, I was just going to order a pair on their annual sale, but got some office shoes instead. Considering it's almost winter here i Toronto, sandels aren't much use at the moment 😂 I love Xero shoes. I wear the Xero TerraFlex when I'm wilderness backpacking, and put a North Sole brand insole in for a bit of extra cushion. I think pee cloths should just be given out to people who squat to pee when they start any hike! And trowels to every single person! Maybe even a Travel Tushy bidet. 😂 Caminos, wilderness, whichever. I intensely dislike seeing TP blooms along the trail. It's just so rude. And gross. I like your pack, I'm just not so sure it would work for larger breasted people. I think I would have some very odd looking bulges all over everywhere 😂

    Xero shoes are awesome. I wear the Zelen daily and I just ordered a pair of Ridgeway boots for daily wear in Galicia. I'll have to check out the North Sole insoles. Those sound great. I love my TerraFlex for day hikes, but I found my feet swell too much to use them on Caminos. I had to switch to Altras for the extra cushion and wider midfoot. Definitely agree about the pee cloths! I've brought a trowel on more remote Camino routes. The Frances has so many towns though, it's really not needed for this one. Good point about the bag for larger breasted people. I'm a B cup, so it works for me. There are some diagrams on the website suggesting to put the buckle under your bust if you are larger chested. I haven't seen anyone else wear this bag, so I'm not sure what that feels/looks like.
